FPL review: Mudryk bright, Mitoma v March, Maddison returns

The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from two of Saturday’s Premier League fixtures are discussed in our latest Scout Notes article.

Here we focus on Liverpool v Chelsea and Leicester City v Brighton and Hove Albion.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture this season.

FALLEN FPL GIANTS

According to LiveFPL’s ownership statistics, the average Fantasy manager in the top 10,000 owns 0.6 Chelsea players and 0.3 Liverpool assets.

We’re a far cry from the days in which our FPL squads were packed full of picks from each side and there was little on show on Saturday lunchtime to further interest in anyone other than Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.6m).

Kepa walked away with yet another haul after supplementing his clean sheet with save/bonus points, taking his points-per-match average to 5.2 – a number that is unbeaten by any other first-choice goalkeeper.

Liverpool seldom threatened Chelsea’s goal with any real quality. Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) was again quiet, having only one shot for the third match in a row, while not one of Cody Gakpo‘s (£8.0m) seven efforts caused much consternation.

Above: Mohamed Salah’s expected goal involvement (xGI) was just 0.10 in Gameweek 21

The Reds’ shut-out – their first since October – arrived more by luck than judgement. Debutant Mykhailo Mudryk (£7.0m) had a couple of clear sighters, Benoit Badiashile (£5.0m) should have scored from a set piece, Thiago Silva (£5.4m) hit the post from close range and Kai Havertz’s (£7.8m) strike was chalked off for a marginal offside.

“Massive, massive. So, directly after the game you cannot forget the chances they had, where we defended in the last seconds with a block. But tomorrow I don’t remember them anymore, it’s just a clean sheet and it feels really good. So, how I said, there are things we have to build on, that’s what we will do.” – Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool’s clean sheet

Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s (£7.3m) annus horribilis continued: he didn’t even get to benefit from the clean sheet points, with a midweek injury reducing him to a substitute role. A belated return to training also meant that a fit-again Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) had to make do with a second-half cameo.

A FIRST SIGHT OF MUDRYK

Mudryk’s debut came early in the second half and he immediately looks like one for the FPL watchlist. Pacey and direct with his dribbling, his stats might show only one shot on goal but he was in the thick of things. That registered effort came from six yards after a waltz into the Liverpool area but he was also inches away from connecting with a cross from the right and then should have finished first time, rather than attempted to control the ball, with an almost identical delivery.

“That was really good. He’s only been with us a couple of days. He will only get better the more he is with us, and the more we understand each other, but promising signs. He will get supporters off their seats. His dribbling action is really high. He knows where the goal is.

“We had 45 minutes as his maximum, ideally around 35 minutes. We felt it as the right time to put him in, he is a fit boy and has trained a lot. He’s not played since November so it would have been a risk to play him from the start.

“I am happy for him to get his first minutes and start his career with us.” – Graham Potter

FINE MARGINS FOR MARCH + MITOMA

Kaoru Mitoma (£5.0m) v Solly March (£5.1m) would have been a coin-toss decision for a considerable number of FPL managers ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

The two players had polarising fortunes in Gameweek 21, with Mitoma walking away with a double-digit haul and March blanking.

Talk about fine margins (and ‘variance’), though. Mitoma’s excellent strike came from his only shot of the game, an effort that carried an expected goals (xG) value of just 0.02. March, meanwhile, missed the below chance after kicking the ball, Mitrovic-style, onto his standing foot. Mitoma would have claimed the assist for the below effort, it should be said, but at least the ‘big chance created’ helped him secure maximum bonus points.

The third member of Brighton’s cut-price, in-form trio, Evan Ferguson (£4.6m), lost his place in the starting XI but replaced positional rival Danny Welbeck (£6.5m) midway through the second half and grabbed a late equaliser. Game-time might always be more of a question mark than it is with Mitoma or March but this goal won’t have done his Gameweek 22 prospects any harm, while Ferguson remarkably now sits top of the FPL form table among forwards.

Pervis Estupinan (£4.5m) claimed assists for both of the Seagulls’ goals and now sits a fine seventh among FPL defenders for chances created this season.

It was another positive attacking display from Albion, who have scored two or more goals in seven of their last eight league matches. They’ll be without Alexis Mac Allister (£5.4m) in Gameweek 22, however, after he picked up his fifth booking of the season on Saturday.

‘BIG-CHANCE’ BARNES, MADDISON RETURNS

The rate of ‘big chances’ falling to Harvey Barnes (£6.7m) was something we mentioned in last week’s Scout Notes after a defeat to Nottingham Forest and here he was again getting another gilt-edged opportunity against Brighton, this time converting.

Above: Harvey Barnes has had at least one big chance in nine of his last 11 appearances. Here is how he ranks compared to other FPL midfielders in that time.

“He’s always a threat, Harvey. Maybe his final pass wasn’t so good today but he was in there, he read the flick on well and it was nice to get a goal from a corner.” – Brendan Rodgers

Also noteworthy for FPL managers was the return to fitness of James Maddison (£8.0m), who made his first appearance since the World Cup as a second-half substitute. Leicester’s next four fixtures will be a deterrent to most of us but Maddison will soon be back in the Fantasy reckoning, with his average of 5.9 points per start in 2022/23 only beaten by two other midfielders – Mitoma and Martin Odegaard (£6.9m) – who we’d consider regular starters.

Last few weeks have been good and am currently sitting at 158k, up from a season low of 5.6m.

I have a habit of doing this, decent GW1 and then I properly mess it up and leave myself a hill to climb for the season.

Not that it’s not exciting in and of itself but determined as I am every year not to repeat the same pattern, it’s always the same.

This year I’ve managed to increase my team value with way fewer transfers, which has definitely helped.

Anyone got any other advice for those first few weeks of the season? Any strategies in team selection that deliver consistent results? Or are the first few weeks bound to deliver severe standings swings due to the bunching of the tables? Thanks in advance…

Stick with the template to keep pace with a respectable rank (not that I took my own advice).

Then gradually look to pick away from it.

Thanks Heros, I am usually pretty templatey. Funnily enough, still pretty templatey so wasn’t quite expecting the big green arrows last couple of weeks. I think I’m too rash sometimes at start of season and not patient to wait and see true form.

Mudryk definitely looked good when he came on. I've only really seen him in the UCL but he showed flashes here of what I had seen before, direct running at defenders and towards goal and good footwork and a lot of pace. Chelsea still seem hard to predict so I'm not sure how viable a pick he'll be but I'm certainly tempted by him with some decent fixtures on the horizon

Will definitely give him a few gameweeks before deciding. New players in the PL almost always results in 2 outcomes: instant form or a longer period until they start showing any form. No short term gaining of form unless its to do with fitness etc

There's seems to be a lot of bitching towards the contributers and content of the site. More so than I have ever seen in the past 13 years. Is this due to new breeds on here? I find it flabbergasting how people can moan about contributers, the experts and the site in general. If you don't like it then don't visit the site. Keep your negativity to yourself. Bored of coming on here to hear people moaning about the site. Granted this post is moany before some half a*se illustrates the obvious

I think it's probably more of a general frustrating with content creators in general with the prevalence of them everywhere now on any social-based site.

I've only been here a short time so can't complain much. I've never subscribed as I don't see a need for it, I can find the info I need for free on other sites and much prefer the more personal eye test anyway. That being said, this site really does need some QOL improvements and it has done so since I joined. Issues have been raised often and I feel like they're rarely listened to or dealt with, ones that are simply to do with the usability of the site and I can't really understand that, especially from people that are paying for it (although really that's a different matter).

    Thoughts on this...

Andreas + Walker --> Eriksen + Estupinan (for free)

Can't afford Fernandes without making at least 3 or 4 transfers, and my team would be unbalanced as a result

The moves would leave me with this team:

    Kepa
    Trippier Shaw Botman
    KDB Rashford ERIKSEN Martinelli
    Haaland Kane Mitrovic

    Ward White Almiron ESTUPINAN

    This gives me;
    Shaw, Rashford, Eriksen who double.

...and the possibility of a bench boost! (The bench have good fixtures e.g. Bournemouth, Everton, West ham)

Good morning all!! Best option between Botman and Burn?? Both have 4 bonus this season Botman(7,7,7,7) and Burn(7,9) flip a coin????

    Cheers everyone!!!

Both now at the same price, I would lean towards Burn with slightly higher attacking threat in open play.

Mudryk is on for winning the Balon Dor if you go buy some of the bedwetting FPL And Chelsea fans.

He got one point and fluffed his lines yesterday. He’s fast but is basically Ukrainian Theo Walcott

Plays for a better team and surrounded by better players. Have a look at his stats outside of his Burnley stint. I didn't say he is world class. I just don't think the Burnley stint should be a factor when considering to transfering him

You going to TC? The assists are coming from all over tbh. Casemiro, Eriksen, Garnacho, Fernandes so it's hard to say. Could work, could fail.

I'll buck the trend and say I was actually looking at Eriksen too. His positioning should realistically mean he'll less likely to return, but he's been superb every time I've seen him lately, he's been everywhere on the pitch and is still carrying the ball up the pitch in central positions at times, for a punt on a double week I don't think it could hurt. Only issue may be getting subbed around 60-70. But 5 returns in his last 6 (which is exactly what Bruno has)

Gnonto & Rodrigo should be safe starters in the short-term; I wouldn't worry about that. For my own part, I think I need to see how Forest have been playing at home as I haven't seen much of them lately & I'm not too sure how good these fixtures are. If anything happens to Bruno in the meantime I'll almost certainly get Rodrigo. Bit undecided on Mitrovic - Gnonto at the moment since it would be for a hit.

If no DGW - Mount & Mitro ➡ Mitoma & Toney

    Kepa Ward
    Trips Shaw White Lewis Bueno
    KDB Odegaard Martinelli Rashford Mount
    Haaland Mitro Kane

Shaw and Rashford seem like season keepers and Utd have a good run of fixtures ahead.

Issues I have with Trippier (c)

    - going against high EO in Haaland
    - Haaland has a higher ceiling
    - rinse repeat

Newcastle look they prefer a more defensive approach than attacking at the moment. Certainly from open play, we can't rely on Trippier. Returns from set pieces are too inconsistent

Hmm I'm not sure its a preference tbh, I think its just the effect of Wilson struggling, Almiron regressing a bit & some smart defensive tactics employed against them - especially shutting down the space for Trip-Miggy-Bruno triangles. Still creating chances & putting up decent xG figures

So Mitoma went to Uninversity to do a thesis on how to dribble. The guy is determined to be the one of the best in that category, and not shying away from other qualities (scoring, assists etc). He is an enticing prospect.
