FPL review: Mudryk bright, Mitoma v March, Maddison returns

The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from two of Saturday’s Premier League fixtures are discussed in our latest Scout Notes article.

Here we focus on Liverpool v Chelsea and Leicester City v Brighton and Hove Albion.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture this season.

FALLEN FPL GIANTS

According to LiveFPL’s ownership statistics, the average Fantasy manager in the top 10,000 owns 0.6 Chelsea players and 0.3 Liverpool assets.

We’re a far cry from the days in which our FPL squads were packed full of picks from each side and there was little on show on Saturday lunchtime to further interest in anyone other than Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.6m).

Kepa walked away with yet another haul after supplementing his clean sheet with save/bonus points, taking his points-per-match average to 5.2 – a number that is unbeaten by any other first-choice goalkeeper.

Liverpool seldom threatened Chelsea’s goal with any real quality. Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) was again quiet, having only one shot for the third match in a row, while not one of Cody Gakpo‘s (£8.0m) seven efforts caused much consternation.

Above: Mohamed Salah’s expected goal involvement (xGI) was just 0.10 in Gameweek 21

The Reds’ shut-out – their first since October – arrived more by luck than judgement. Debutant Mykhailo Mudryk (£7.0m) had a couple of clear sighters, Benoit Badiashile (£5.0m) should have scored from a set piece, Thiago Silva (£5.4m) hit the post from close range and Kai Havertz’s (£7.8m) strike was chalked off for a marginal offside.

“Massive, massive. So, directly after the game you cannot forget the chances they had, where we defended in the last seconds with a block. But tomorrow I don’t remember them anymore, it’s just a clean sheet and it feels really good. So, how I said, there are things we have to build on, that’s what we will do.” – Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool’s clean sheet

Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s (£7.3m) annus horribilis continued: he didn’t even get to benefit from the clean sheet points, with a midweek injury reducing him to a substitute role. A belated return to training also meant that a fit-again Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) had to make do with a second-half cameo.

A FIRST SIGHT OF MUDRYK

Mudryk’s debut came early in the second half and he immediately looks like one for the FPL watchlist. Pacey and direct with his dribbling, his stats might show only one shot on goal but he was in the thick of things. That registered effort came from six yards after a waltz into the Liverpool area but he was also inches away from connecting with a cross from the right and then should have finished first time, rather than attempted to control the ball, with an almost identical delivery.

“That was really good. He’s only been with us a couple of days. He will only get better the more he is with us, and the more we understand each other, but promising signs. He will get supporters off their seats. His dribbling action is really high. He knows where the goal is.

“We had 45 minutes as his maximum, ideally around 35 minutes. We felt it as the right time to put him in, he is a fit boy and has trained a lot. He’s not played since November so it would have been a risk to play him from the start.

“I am happy for him to get his first minutes and start his career with us.” – Graham Potter

FINE MARGINS FOR MARCH + MITOMA

Kaoru Mitoma (£5.0m) v Solly March (£5.1m) would have been a coin-toss decision for a considerable number of FPL managers ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

The two players had polarising fortunes in Gameweek 21, with Mitoma walking away with a double-digit haul and March blanking.

Talk about fine margins (and ‘variance’), though. Mitoma’s excellent strike came from his only shot of the game, an effort that carried an expected goals (xG) value of just 0.02. March, meanwhile, missed the below chance after kicking the ball, Mitrovic-style, onto his standing foot. Mitoma would have claimed the assist for the below effort, it should be said, but at least the ‘big chance created’ helped him secure maximum bonus points.

The third member of Brighton’s cut-price, in-form trio, Evan Ferguson (£4.6m), lost his place in the starting XI but replaced positional rival Danny Welbeck (£6.5m) midway through the second half and grabbed a late equaliser. Game-time might always be more of a question mark than it is with Mitoma or March but this goal won’t have done his Gameweek 22 prospects any harm, while Ferguson remarkably now sits top of the FPL form table among forwards.

Pervis Estupinan (£4.5m) claimed assists for both of the Seagulls’ goals and now sits a fine seventh among FPL defenders for chances created this season.

It was another positive attacking display from Albion, who have scored two or more goals in seven of their last eight league matches. They’ll be without Alexis Mac Allister (£5.4m) in Gameweek 22, however, after he picked up his fifth booking of the season on Saturday.

‘BIG-CHANCE’ BARNES, MADDISON RETURNS

The rate of ‘big chances’ falling to Harvey Barnes (£6.7m) was something we mentioned in last week’s Scout Notes after a defeat to Nottingham Forest and here he was again getting another gilt-edged opportunity against Brighton, this time converting.

Above: Harvey Barnes has had at least one big chance in nine of his last 11 appearances. Here is how he ranks compared to other FPL midfielders in that time.

“He’s always a threat, Harvey. Maybe his final pass wasn’t so good today but he was in there, he read the flick on well and it was nice to get a goal from a corner.” – Brendan Rodgers

Also noteworthy for FPL managers was the return to fitness of James Maddison (£8.0m), who made his first appearance since the World Cup as a second-half substitute. Leicester’s next four fixtures will be a deterrent to most of us but Maddison will soon be back in the Fantasy reckoning, with his average of 5.9 points per start in 2022/23 only beaten by two other midfielders – Mitoma and Martin Odegaard (£6.9m) – who we’d consider regular starters.

Friday night, me and 5 colleagues put our score prediction on the Liv vs Che game on pieces of paper and put them in to a bag, along with £5 each. Winner takes all.
We take it out of the safe at 3 o’clock yesterday, all 6 went 0-0. 😆

Amazing, considering that the clean sheet odds were 26% for Chelsea and 32% for Liverpool.
What do the odds-setters know, or the many like myself who benched Kepa?

I suppose we look at it slightly differently as we are all fans of the respective clubs. Well me vs 5 Chelsea. The way we’re playing and the fact that we’ll only continue to go backwards this season on all fronts, made us all sure of a bore draw. Almost just see out that game and move on.

I put Botman in to join Trippier after the World Cup break, and they've returned 77 points between them for me in the last five Gameweeks (including an extra 8 points for captaining Trippier this week).
And I could have had another six points if I hadn't benched Botman against Arsenal in Gameweek 19.
Now I'm just hoping that Haaland doesn't outscore Trippier!

When I brought Lewis is it was primarily as an enabler to raise funds for KDB. Was never intending to start him but I have this week as a calculated gamble as my other option is Shaw. I figure that worst case scenario Lewis is benched and comes on for a 1pt cameo he will only be blocking a likely Shaw 1 or 2 pointer. As he has started 3 out of the last 5 games there would seem to be at least a decent chance he starts again. Thats the theory anyway.

      According to Chatgpt, this is your answer;

"It depends on the specific players you are considering for your fantasy Premier League team. Both Mitoma and March are midfielders who play for different teams in the league, so their performance and scoring potential will vary. It's a good idea to research their statistics and recent performances to make an informed decision on who to include in your team. Additionally, you should also consider the overall strategy and composition of your team when making your decision."

Still a few games to go before deadline & the City situation changes so rapidly, but maybe I would lean Mahrez. Mainly because he's more of a hop on/off kind of option rather than someone I'd want to leave in until he becomes problem. That Spurs defence though... tough one

If Pep drops Mahrez after this kind of form, then if they end dropping points in the next few then he will be solely responsible. Players like Mahrez need constant games to keep on the form, chopping and changing every other game has its own negativities.

I just realised that I really want to wild card this week. That saved transfer was totally pointless.

I wildcarded last gw20. Realized i did a mistake post WC and ended up climbing the ranks with a huge haul.

Don't blame yourself for that, it's just a transfer.
Pull the trigger. I did it prior to this week and it feels great.

I'd love to finally rectify some very basic mistakes like not having 2 arsenal mids and 2 Newcastle defence.

I actually went away from double Arsenal attack and got double defence instead

Whereas I've been on double defence this whole time and keep benching them.

Looking at Man City's recent league results in games where they've had less than 72hrs recovery time:

    MUN 2-1 MCI
    MCI 1-1 EVE
    MCI 1-2 BRE
    MCI 2-1 FUL

Didn't seem to be that much of a problem earlier in the season, but it does look like their worst recent performances tend to fall into this category

I think you need more context. Who did they play in the previous game? How many changes were there between the two games?

Yeah there's more variables for sure but I tried to keep the post concise... some are cup games with very different lineups, some are league games. There's also the FA Cup game v Chelsea which they had less than 72hrs rest for but bucked this trend with a 4-0 win.

    Keep Ward
    Trippier Shaw White Botman Bueno
    KDB Martinelli Rashford Almiron Odegaard
    Haaland Kane Mitrovic

    1ft
    1.5 itb

    A). KDB to Bruno
    B). Ward to Kepa
    C). Almiron to Rodrigo

If i do A it means i would have to get KDB back the next week but he hasn't looked great recently anyway

    Cheers

Good afternoon all!! WC tinkering!!!! Current draft…. Advice welcomed!!!!

    Pope Kepa
    Stones Gabriel Trippier Shaw Tete
    Saka Odegaard Bruno Rashford Rodrigo
    Haaland Kane Gononto

    Bang on budget this team!!

Bruno and Gnonto to Mahrez and Mitrovic in 23… pencilling transfers after a WC is a taboo subject it just means I can get the core of this team straight away this week and am set up for the doubles and gameweek 25…..

    Thoughts welcomed!!!

    Cheers everyone!!!

    2. Eze Really?
      • 10 Years

Most picks are my thoughts too.
      Caveats are:
Newcastle clean sheets bound to come to an end.
I like Pope and Kepa but money can be saved with similar results and a possible double for a keeper.
Man U or Arsenal take a dip and your eggs are in one basket. (No critisism intended)
You are not OTT for GW25 but only a hard fixture for Kepa is then.
I love Gnonto but how long does he last?
      Maybe save .6 on Tete.
As you said, planning TFRS can be an issue.
I promise I am not knocking it but 4 ManU fixtures to come before the next GW is a real reason to wait.
      Good luck mate!

Thankyou mate!!! Yeah with Newcastle in line draft I was tripled up and have changed it to the double up purely for that fear.. can’t think of another keeper I’d want tho instead of Pope or Kepa, got plenty of time to give it some thought and do some research tho, I got pop in last night before he went up to 5.5
YeH triple United would just be for this week(providing the double occurs) then Bruno to Mahrez the following week for City’s double
Arsenal have been impressive all season do triple up on them i happy with for sure
Gnonto is purely just to fit in all the other players I want this week, him and Bruno to Mitrovic and Mahrez will be those two slots there the week after

Thankyou mate!! Appreciate your feedback!!! Best of luck to you too mate!!

I think pencilling in transfers on WC is actually a good thing when you're using it to target DGWs. Looks strong. My minor quibble would be Tete but I think that's fine for 25 (I'm actually planning to get Leno if Raya blanks)

Cheers mate!! Tete had Forest in 23 and Wolves in 25 at home so it’s just for those really and cannot stretch to Ream, Fulham have been excellent especially at home

Conte leaving Spurs on summer, apart from how bad Levy’s club management is, do you think this affects Spurs performances?
    Kane especially

I think it looks like Kane is leaving either way so I don't think it'll matter. I'm sure he'll want to go on a high if he can and leave with as many goals as possible but Spurs just aren't looking great and are unpredictable and look like they'll miss out on CL
