How important is home advantage in FPL? Part 1: teams

Just how important is home advantage and should it influence our thinking in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

In this two-part article, we look at the numbers being posted at home and away in the Premier League so far in 2022/23.

First up is team data, while we’ll take a look at individual players in a follow-up piece.

CLEAN SHEETS/GOALS SCORED AT HOME + AWAY: LAST 10 SEASONS

CS = Clean Sheets
GC = Goals Conceded
*** – Virtually all matches were played behind closed doors and home advantage all but evaporated.

Looking at this season and the nine that came before it (apart from a behind-closed-doors 2020/21), we can expect roughly 58% of clean sheets and 56% of goals scored to be registered by home teams in an average campaign.

A higher percentage of goals are being scored on home soil (57.9%) in 2022/23 than in any of the other seasons featured here, even if this is not reflected in the clean sheet column.

It’s heavily dependent on an Arsenal clean sheet and Bailey getting attacking returns to get anything decent.

There's an FA Cup. Never seen much point for a League Cup except for 2nd team practice. Do other countries subject their top divisions to two domestic cup competitions?

Not really, but then no other country has the historic distinction (and frequently acrimonious relationship) between two distinct entities - Football League and Football Association. I think as part of the negotiations that led to the creation of the FA Premier League the top teams agreed to still play in the League Cup.

France have the French Cup and a league cup too so it's not unique.

Won’t you want KDB back for City’s GW23 double? Bruno is in a purple patch but, as a United fan I’m not convinced it’ll continue indefinitely. Have you another avenue for getting Ode in without sacrificing KDB?

Personally I would sacrifice Martinelli. Hasn’t produced much of late and Ode is on fire. You’ll want Mahrez and KDB for Citys’s DGW

    Which one for free?

    A) Kane and Almiron to Nketiah and Bruno
    B) KdB and Almiron to Bruno and Odegaard

B would bean KdB back next week for City's DGW.
Longer term would like to keep Kane, but not so easy fixtures ahead.

Got 3 Man U, 2 City and 2 arsenal so look set for upcoming doubles.

Looking to shift Toney and Mitro for free to either

    Gnonto and Ferguson
    Or
    Nketiah and Ferguson.

Worth punting on Gnonto if double confirmed? Would be for free.

    Then Gnonto out for Nketiah

Straight to Eddie I think. Don't be too swayed by the double. Arsenal could easily put 3+ past Everton, and most importantly you'll have an extra transfer

Better United trio? B helps me keep KDB

    A) Rash Bruno Shaw
    B) Rash Martinez Shaw

A has to be the optimal one, but B could work if it suits your team set up (and i have considered it myself as someone trying to cram in Arsenal mids and get rid of Cucu).

        1. Black Knights
          • 12 Years
          1 year, 3 months ago

I'd be going KdB to Bruno + Almiron to Rodrigo, then Rodrigo to Mahrez as he's in good form and better value at the price, so no return to KdB. But it is still a lot of midfield transfers when i'm also trying to find room for Odegaard at the same time.

Considering similar moves, but not sure there's a huge profit margin on a -8 given that it probably has to be made up in around 4 GWs before Jesus is back

Great WC last week, now comes the benching headache

    Pope
    SHAW Trippier Zinchenko (Bueno Estupinan)
    RASHFORD Saka Ode Mahrez Mudryk
    GNONTO Haaland Kane

1ft 2.5 ITB - If GW 22 goes ahead would you

Mahrez to Bruno to Mahres ]z23

    Bench:
    Gnonto or Kane

Would probably TC Rashford or just BB it? ( I know there are better times, but doing quite poorly but went up from 1.1 mill to 600K by being super aggressive)

    1. Haa-lala-land
      • 3 Years

Get rid of Bueno to a doubler and it's a pretty good BB.

I think I'd play Gnonto over Kane. Its counter intuitive, but seeing as everyone else will have Kane, you have a chance to make ground if Kane blanks and Gnonto returns, which is maybe more likely

    Bit of a left field one but;

Martinelli, Andreas, KDB, Mitro --> Odegaard, Mahrez, BrunoF, Nketiah

Would be an 8 point hit.

Mahrez could be Mudryk, Mitoma, March etc

Presumably Andreas is benched so who gets benched when his replacement is Mahrez? You could maybe save yourself -4 and do Andreas to mahrez the week after.

Does Rashford have a high enough ceiling to TC?

Are folks on Rashford TC setting the bar low on the chip and happy with one return per game?

    1. Lemongrab
      • 14 Years

I think it's definitely worth considering.

      Absolutely nailed.
      Two plum home fixtures.
In the form of his life.

The only thing holding me back is the thought of Haaland in city's upcoming double

    2. Black Knights
      • 12 Years
      1 year, 3 months ago

I think my TC hasn't even made the second game of the DGW in each of the last 3 seasons, so my bar is very low.

TBH, i consider us up against Haaland's 8 and Rashford's 12 from last week, and i think Rashford can definitely get at least 12.

I'd be happy with a goal and an assist, which i think is very plausible from those fixtures.

In reality, anything around 12-15 is ok for a TC, think its generally overhyped. Also need to consider whether other TC weeks are better suited to FH/BB

With form he's in Rashford is definitely a good option

I'm not disputing Rashford TC is not a good option to consider. Interesting to hear what folks expectations are with Rashford.

I think an optimistic but reasonable expectation would be something like 3 attacking returns + 3 BPS in Leeds game and some share of it v Palace. I expect something like:
      MUN 2-0 CRY
      MUN 3-1 LEE

    A) Almiron (West Ham home)

Almiron form not great and Newcastle been struggling a little for goals, think I'd be tempted by Mitro but not much in it

I actually don't agree with this. Almiron has been playing well. It's the players around him not being clinical enough with the chances he is creating

last 4 gws; Mitro 2.83 xGI, Miggy xGI 0.91

Granted Mitro keeps messing up penalties which skews this a little

I'm only commenting on the "Almiron form not great" part, not Almiron vs Mitro.

fair - though vs Mitro is the context for the original question

Tinkering with options to get in Bruno and/or Mahrez for next couple of GWs

    Medium term;

    a) 3 premiums (Haaland, KdB, Kane)
    b) lose KdB (to Mahrez)
    c) lose Kane (shift to 5 man mid)

Kane 2nd best premium and FWD so I'm keeping. I'm currently between A and B but need to wait and see how the doubles and blanks play out

Does A preclude Bruno & Mahrez? Question isn't really clear to me

in A Bruno won't be afforable without multiple hits so would have to ignore and focus on Mahrez for week after

thinking more about team structure going forwards with 2 vs 3 premiums - will wait on more concrete info on doubles and blanks in 25 before coming up with a plan

Steve Cooper on Morgan Gibbs-White: "He's got an ankle injury. I don't know the extent of it - if it's a kick or something else. We'll see in the next couple of days."
