We are entering what is unquestionably my favourite period of the FPL season. Last year’s Blank and Double Gameweek bonanza saw divergent chip strategies on Wildcard 26 vs Triple Captain 26, Bench Boost 28 vs Bench Boost 36 etc.

As we conclude the EFL Cup semi-finals and ingest the FA Cup fifth-round draw, we now know the probabilities of teams blanking in Gameweeks 25 and 28. At the time of writing, I have made the assumption that Newcastle United and Manchester United will contest the EFL Cup final, so the planning has well and truly begun.

I have opted to go team-by-team and assess what we need to be thinking about, as we try to optimise this interesting schedule.

Manchester City – Buy, then gradually sell by Gameweek 28

totAVL, arsnfobouNEWcryLIV, (WHU?)
DoubleAssuming they beat Bristol City in FA Cup R5Likely doubleAssuming they reach FA Cup semi

With Double Gameweek 20 recently concluded, most of us should already be decently stocked on Man City assets. Unless their name is Joao Cancelo (£7.1m) or John Stones (£5.4m), I see little reason to sell anyone ahead of their next double.

Thereafter, the champions have two very tasty away games but they sandwich the RB Leipzig away leg in the Champions League, so expect rotation. After Gameweek 25, their non-Erling Haaland (£12.2m) assets become more disposable as you’d expect them to beat Bristol City in the FA Cup fifth round and thus blank in Gameweek 28.

I can see the Kevin De Bruyne (£12.5m) to Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) move becoming popular, or perhaps moving a defender to a second Newcastle one.

Arsenal – Buy and hold long-term
GW22GW23GW24GW25GW26GW27GW28GW29GW32
eveBRE, MCIavlleiBOUfulCRYLEE, (EVE?)SOU
DoubleLikely doubleAssuming Southampton don’t reach FA Cup semi

If you aren’t tripled up on Arsenal assets, then please do so now and make sure you get the right ones. This is because Arsenal not only have a Double Gameweek on the horizon, they have a confirmed fixture in Blank Gameweek 28 and probably one during Blank 32.

For me, this justifies even a Ben White (£4.7m) or Gabriel Martinelli (£6.7m) upgrade if required. Get the right three and keep them there until a later Wildcard.

Manchester United – Buy now but start selling for Gameweek 25

Potentially not serious based on this: https://twitter.com/JackRosser_/status/1620346866897649665

Wouldn't necessarily count on him to start this week however.

With the eriksen injury do we see Bruno drop back and play that role

Need some discipline but also a bit of creativity to make the pass. He’s done it before under previous management

No he's not that kind of player. He actually loses the ball quite a lot. That's fine when he's in and around the box cutting teams open, it's low risk, but losing it deep in the build up is catastrophic. They need someone like a Jorginho ideally, and intelligent player that can consistently play passes through the lines and outthink a press.

Casemiro and Martinez will help with deep ball progression, but Eriksen is irreplaceable in the current squad. They need another loan ideally.

      Odegaard
      Defenders (Gabriel, Saliba, White)
      Saka
      Nketiah
      Martinelli

Probably the best. I am worried about my current Ben White and Martinelli. I am tempted to switch Marti to Odegaard for next week, leave White a bit longer but change on WC, and punt on Nketiah until he loses his place.

Yeah, the timing is so wrong

Great deep-lying playmakers are rare, and anyone they go for today will have an automatically doubled/trebled price tag, especially considering that the selling club won't have time for a replacement

Sorry boring question, 1FT left with the following:

    Azpi
    Stones / Shaw / Tripper
    Almiron / Martinelli / KDB / Rashford
    Kane / Mitro / Haaland
    (Ward / Botman / Andreas / Bueno)

Is Mitrovic => Nketiah a good move this week?

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years
      1 year, 3 months ago

Azpi should look good with gloves on

I'd start Botman over Mitro, then spend the FT replacing the injured Stones with Zinch or Gabriel

Depending on how much you believe Jesus (he said he's on track to be back by GW25), Nketiah might turn out to be a high-scoring short-term asset, so I'd just focus on the injured guy here

Know I should have at least 2, but which one if you could only get 1 of them for the double?

    A) Nketiah
    B) Ødegaard
    C) Saka

Won't spend a FT or a hit to take out Martinelli or White

I am not convinced Saka is worth the extra outlay over Odegaard, so probably B. But with more midfield options out there, I'm probably ending up on A

    2. Lionel Fellaini
      • 8 Years

Saka if you can afford but all 3 are good options

    3. Ze_Austin

Odegaard has been the most consistent since GW16, while somehow being relatively cheap. No risk of being dropped/replaced/rotated any time soon, so he's my first choice

Nketiah has a clear lead in stats over the rest of them, but will likely have Jesus breathing down his neck 3 GWs from now. If you have a plan for that, I'd take Nketiah as the priority

Saka happens to be the fall guy here (only to answer your question, mind), but I'm happily taking him for a hit this GW to get Saka - Odegaard - White as my triple-up

    Hi guys,

    Would love some advice here!

    Current team:

    kepa (ward)
    Gabriel / Trippier / Shaw (paterson/bueno)
    KDB /Odegard/Rashford/Mitoma (andreas)
    Nketiah/haaland/kane

1 FT, 2.9m in the bank

Pretty happy with the team, but wish I has Saka over Gabriel, but a bit of a headache to make the move.

    Do i do;

A- KDB to Bruno, just leave arsenal three as it is.
B- KDB to bruno, and gabriel to someone else (who?!) take a minus 4, and then get saka in next week, for another minus 4 (as will be bringing KDB back in)

Basically is losing 8 points over 2 gameweeks worth it to swap Gabriel for saka?

Any other suggestions welcomed, thanks in advance!

I don't understand your rush to sell Gabriel, even for free

You have a very good squad. No need to rip it up with hits due to the grass being greener on the other side

Just the Bruno move for me, while future FTs focus on weaknesses: Patterson, Bueno, Andreas, Ward

Thanks!. Yeah its not so much a rush to get rid, I do rate Gabriel, it's more about having the best arsenal 3 for the double. And good as he is, I'd prefer saka. But I agree it's probably not worth 8 point hit, when I have other areas to strengthen

Looks like a solid team already tbh.
I know what you mean about Gabriel. He's not on form atm and neither is Martinelli (i have them both) but doubt it is worth a -8 to swap them around. I was toying with a WC this week but it seems overkill.
Rather than swap out KDB for Bruno perhaps swap Andreas for Casemiro . He's no Brunofor sure but tou get a DGW player who is in form and you'll still have kdb for next weeks double?

oh hadn't thought of that! Yeah would rather have Bruno, but it's defo worth mulling over...thanks! (although would mean a bit of a benching headache) Yeah i defo think there will be better times to WC so i'd save if I was you!

    Question.

I've got exactly enough to do Almiron to Saka but looks like Saka may rise before the deadine. Is it worth doing the transfer for a -4 this week to make sure I can have him? Or should I wait until next week and if I can't afford him just get Martinelli instead for free?

Tough one especially when it involves a hit. Arsenal don't have a fixure before the Everton game so less risk involved if you make the early transfer.

I think i will have only one decision this week.
    Start
    A. JWP
    B. Martnelli
    C. Martnelli to Saka (bench jwp)

JWP and Mart are unpredictable, yet could haul any time

I'd say Martinelli because of the opponent's defence

The Saka switch can wait for one more GW to see if anything else becomes important for that FT in GW23, imo

Its this time of the season where what seems an innocent WC decision of Ferguson over Bueno really hurts

Thinking Cancelo, Almiron to Bueno, Bruno this week? Then Bruno to Saka next week? Still have wildcard...

    DDG
    White Trip TAA
    Marti KdB Rash Almiron
    Haaland Toney Mitro
    Ward Andreas Cancelo Patterson

Zidane is promising player but I think it's too early for him. Could trial him there against Forest, but it's a difficult role for a 19-year-old to play at Premier League level.

Fingers crossed. They have to go for someone, however unlikely it is to pull off on deadline day.
