Our community writers have been on fine form over the past week, presenting us with one of the busiest periods for articles on record.

Fantasy Premier League Bonus Point changes, squad rotation and goalkeeper selection were among the array of issues assessed. It was also a bumper week for Hot Topics, as we look back on discussions on Fantasy football’s unofficial achievements, the best premium players on offer and also welcome the youngest new recruit to the Fantasy Football Scout family.

The Community Articles

The changes to Fantasy Premier League’s Bonus Point System (BPS) was the subject of The 3rd Turd’s impressive research this week. Incredibly he has managed to configure next season’s changes to last season’s games to find out just who will be the winners and losers when it comes to bonus allocation.

Another stellar piece of analysis was unveiled by The Shoemaker, newly established as one of the community’s top new contributors. This time he examined the subject of squad rotation, assessing those teams with the most and least settled sides.

Rotation of a different nature was the focus of O’Shaughnessy latest article, in which he considered the best strategy for captains at the start of the season. This was an issue also picked up by Match of the Dan later in the week.  Le Saux Solid Crew’s look at Fantasy Football’s best all round attacking players in recent years proved further, essential reading in the search for the best armband selection.

As Fantasy managers prepare for Gameweek 1, price is always a primary consideration. This week saw a flurry of community articles offering sound advice for those in search of value players.

Kompany man’s focus was the best bang for your buck goalkeepers, while p00sbrown took an in depth look at the budget assets available in Watford’s squad. Chicken Mandy also has an eye on value in his pick of the best Tottenham prospects.

Triggerlips has also been looking at price and the time-honoured tactic of selecting a cheap fifth midfielder to afford the premium captain candidates elsewhere. But, he wonders, is 2015/16 the season to ditch the strategy and splash the cash on all five midfielders? The search for value continued in TM245‘s look at Value Over Replacement Player theory, which considered the best value midfielders as well forwards.

When the FPL player price list was announced there were more than a few surprises, with the majority of the community overestimating many price tags, according to the results from Dat Guy’s Price Prediction Challenge. Congratulations though to the crystal ball gazing skills of Henrzd, who had the best predictions.

The Sky Sports game also launched this week and our resident expert Disable was on hand to offer advice in our dedicated Rate My Team (RMT) article.

Finally, we wanted to hark back beyond the last week to The Sarjeant’s superb analysis of Southampton’s conveyor belt of young talent – a terrific insight into a club that’s been feeding our Fantasy Football squads in recent years and may well do for seasons to come.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Later this month we have big plans regarding the steady stream of “Rate My Team” or “RMT” posts coming in. In the meantime, the community offered their advice on RMT etiquette to ensure that they attract replies.

A number of Hot Topics over the week took a look at some of the key names already featuring in many early Fantasy football draft teams. Branislav Ivanovic has emerged as the most popular premium priced defender, according to our poll. While for Wakey Manchester City’s David Silva is a name that should be top of the list of midfield candidates and Parm took a look at Alexis Sanchez’ Fantasy returns with and without some of Arsenal’s key men on the pitch.

More than half of FPL teams already own Eden Hazard but Rattan64 ponders whether Fantasy managers could be better off with 2.5 million in their pockets by drafting in his cheaper Chelsea team mate Cesc Fabregas instead?

A team with no shortage of choice in midfield is Man United, who this week added Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastien Schweinsteiger to a midfield that already boats Juan Mata and Memphis Depay. Doosra, however, is unimpressed and sparked a lively discussion this week after declaring the Red Devil’s revamped midfield a mess. In contrast, Wild Rover thinks the summer spending spree shows a side mounting a genuine title challenge.

Reacting quickly to the form of players such as United’s new recruits early on in the season is amongst the key advice on offer in Birdman77’s discussion on increasing team value in FPL. Reacting to transfer developments is also important, with Younes Kaboul’s move from Tottenham to Sunderland prompting Fantasy Noob to launch a debate on the most nailed-on Black Cat defenders.

Amongst the toughest players to predict a rise in form from are those from promoted teams. Yu Suk Young took this look back at some of the promoted players that proved a worthy investment. The Puntmaster also provides some useful information about those new to the Premier League with this update on his research into new recruits and promoted teams’ players. While Champs took a look at some of those promoted stars that failed to deliver.

Speaking of delivery, Granville popped by with the happy news that this week Mark welcomed a new addition to the family, with the birth of his daughter Edith. While Edith is the youngest birthday marked, this week also saw our resident Southampton expert Lucy celebrate her birthday, which she shares with former Saints star Gareth Bale.

Finally, one of this week’s most popular posts was Bsloebadger’s discussion on unofficial achievements in FPL, such as the Bench Buster, where your bench outscores your starting 11, and Captain Fantastic, where your armband selection delivers returns for 10 weeks in a row.

The Members Tables

With goalkeepers’ stock rising following a change to the bonus points Davejug1’s table went on the hunt for the most prolific penalty savers on offer.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

I think you could get away with it with that team. The danger is that it is a high stakes gamble as hazard has over 50% ownership if it works you could look an fpl genius!

Well that's why I'm starting with Kane and Aguero and a punt on Rodriguez because I think at least the first two could be season keepers. Why would you want to set up a team that you need to take hits on to sort out in a few weeks time.

I apologise in advance for the length of this post. Like most people, I've put more time into this side than is probably acceptable for a sane human being, however I've finally settled on this. Please do RMT if you would be so kind.

    Ruddy | Hennessey
    Darmian | Cresswell | Williams | Huth | Francis
    Walcott | Fabregas | Depay | Henderson | Ritchie
    Rooney | Costa | Deeney

The plan is to wildcard in GW4 to bring in Aguero, as well as defensive Chelsea cover. I'll possibly look to upgrade Walcott to Sanchez depending on how the Arsenal situation unfolds. I'm happy to go with Cesc over Hazard (for now at least) as I think I have enough other captaincy options and the 2.5 difference is huge, plus if Witsel arrives then Cesc's value soars. He also always starts the season on fire. Always. Some further logic and background:

GKs - As I'm wildcarding in GW4, I'm happy to play Ruddy in all 3 preceding gameweeks, Henessey will provide cover should he move to WBA. Otherwise I'll get Rudd, and might do anyway, however I could see Hennessy cementing a place in the WBA side long term if he does go.

DFs - Not fussed about Chelsea cover until the wildcard. My current lot provide nice rotation, particularly over the first 3 weeks. Question marks over Darmian perhaps, I'll monitor him pre-season.

MFs - Ritchie will rotate with Deeney, the other 4 will play every week. I'm slightly torn between Depay and Mata, but I prefer the potential explosiveness of Depay. I like starting with a new big name signing somewhere in my squad. With Sanchez missing at least the first GW, I feel Walcott is nailed for at least the first 2 games. Probably all 3. Henderson is good value, although I'm not a huge fan personally, his points last season were impressive, and I fancy him to kick on as he tries to fill the boots of the slippy one.

FWs - Costa destroys Swansea and is in for that reason alone for now, while Rooney looks like decent value given United's new Schmidfielders and the lack of other options up front. Either Costa or Rooney to Aguero on the wildcard, I have 3 weeks to assess which.

All in all I'm happy enough with the front 8, Deeney vs Wilson is my only other dilemma but having Ritchie makes me lean towards Deeney, although Bournemouth's fixtures and confidence from last season makes me think they'll get off to a flier so Wilson may be worth considering. I keep chopping and changing the defence because there's enough cash there to play with, an Arsenal defender is tempting but it has to be Koscielny and that affects the rotation.

Once again I do apologise for the essay. Feedback, thoughts and comments on anything I may have missed or overlooked would be smashing. Thank you muchly.

I just don't agree with the idea of planning to wildcard early, you want to put in as many players that seem season keepers and save the wildcard for a DGW.

I would normally agree, and usually hold on to my wildcard for that reason, however given that one needs to be used in the first half of the season, hoping for a DGW might be a bit of a lottery. I feel that Aguero and Sanchez's early season absence is a good reason to wildcard early on this year.

Not sure about the keepers but if allows the front 8 with that decent defense I dont mind at all.

I like how you have Ritchie/Deeney as options/rotations in any given week, based on form, and fixture.

That 8.5 mid spot is tricky with all the decent available options at that price. Feel like Depay could easily be BOOM or BUST. I might play it safe with Ramsey instead.

      Overall, well done

Happy to admit I've gone light on the keepers, they're a gamble and one I might revisit if I can borrow 0.5 from the defence.

Depay is definitely a risk, I'm a big fan of Ramsey too, I think there's a few that could fill that position so I'm happy to gamble on Depay I think. If he does boom then he'll surely be an early bandwagon.

        Thanks for your feedback 🙂

Love this team, by the way. Would downgrade Ritchie to a 4.5 to upgrade Feeney to Sakho or Henderson to the 8.5 sweet spot. You could also free up 1 mil by going for Ramsey + Reid.

Also, I see what you're doing with the defense (beautiful rotation) but I think Azpi is a must with this structure. Find the .5 to upgrade Darmian. Remember: bad fixtures are good for Chelsea's defense

Hmmm you make some good points. I've had Azpi in there and the defence is the area I'll play about with most I think. The downside of downgrading Ritchie is having to play Deeney every week. Could be a good thing but I've got a feeling about Bournemouth starting well. Although allowing Henderson to a 8.5? Is hugely tempting....

One more thing: what's the point of long term rotations when you're looking at a 3 week window? You might as well get a Palace defender in there for their 2 easy games.

It's a fair point. The rotations I have are Ritchie/Deeney who are home and away for the season, if be unlikely to touch them on the wildcard because I think they're likely to be where the most value is in terms of cheap, reliable points., while the other rotation is my whole defence, and I would only look to change one of them, upgrading to a Chelsea defender, so the rest of the defensive rotation should pretty much stay in place. Plus I wouldn't touch a Palace defender to be honest, I don't trust their defence one bit!

Good fixtures for at least a couple of months, rotates well and offers plenty of attacking threat for 4.5, I don't think it's a bad deal. The only Palace defender I'd consider is Dann and he's 5.0 which I don't think is worth it, especially off the back of only 6 clean sheets last season. Ward managed 7 but doesn't do it for me, even at 4.5. I take it you'd throw Ward or Hangeland in there?

Would monitor depay in preseason for his game time. LVG is a fan of slowly integrating new p
Ayers into the spa quad and he has already said in a press conference that it will take time for depay to adjust to the speed/physicality etc. of the premier league. So I would consider mata, and if di Maria stays then him also, tough to predict the line up but all three of those are worth watching over pre season to see which it seems he will favour. Hope this helped

True, the planned early WC helps guard against this though. Plus it allows me to find the value as opposed to sacrificing it now by guessing. I suppose I feel it's a risk worth taking. I hope I'm not wrong! Thanks for the feedback.

Not a fan of the early WC but if you have to:

I would get Pants if only for 3-4 weeks, better keeper/better fixtures

No complaints on the defence, both pairs rotate nicely, only worry would be whether Darmian gets the start

I wouldnt rotate Ritchie, get both him and Wilson in, better fixtures than Watford. Maybe downgrade one of these to upgrade to a city player - Sterling/Silva

How much of your team and formation will you change once you wildcard?

Pants was the first keeper in my initial draft. I've chopped him to a 4.5 to accommodate everyone else. Totally agree on fixtures and being a better keeper. If I can squeeze him in I will but Ruddy has previous when it comes to save points so he's not an awful alternative, one I can live with if I have to.

Interesting idea, might be worth milking the Bournemouth start. I've toyed with Sterling but I'm happy to go Cityless until the wildcard. I'll see how he settles in and get Aguero in at that point too.

I don't think I can plan for that to be honest, it'll depend on who I have to move around to get Aguero in. I'm sure plenty will change in the first 3 weeks! Thanks for your feedback 🙂

My concern is these punty cheap and nasty third forwards I keep seeing on here. De Pay too is a bit of a risk and I would rather you went with a players you know who will perform.

Kosta Kane Benteks Roonpig all need to be in the mix imo.

I get where you're coming from but I tend to go with 2 big names up front and a cheapie from a promoted side. Last season I went with Austin so I'm happy to do the same again this year, plus looking at the biggest point scorers last season, it looks like spending more on the midfield might be the way to go which is why I'm trying to avoid a 4.5 in there just so I can accommodate a third big name up front.

I agree that Depay is a risk, I'll assess him over the course of pre-season before settling on him. I assume your changes to my side would be along the lines of downgrading Hendo to a 4.5 and upgrading Deeney to a Lukaku/Benteke?

        Thanks for the feedback!

I'm adopting a wait and see approach. I think he could be fantastic value. I'm a big fan of Silva but not at his current price, it's just a tad too much. I'm not sure I fancy Sterling from the off though.

Having both Walcott and Depay is a bit of a risk imo. It could well be that Depay starts the season on the bench while Walcott fails to displace any of the Arsenal players ahead of him in the pecking order. Add that to the unproven Ritchie and you have a relatively risky midfield.

I'd swap one of Depay/Walcott for a safer (if more dull) option.

    regarding the delph transfer;
    - man city's midfield was rubbish last year. apart from toure who was poor last year too, what other mid is so much better than delph that their place is safe?
    - delph is a there or thereabouts an english international. "assuming" the transfer decision is not 100% a financial decision by him and his advisers, you would assume there is some sort of assurance he will play some first team football in the league.
    - delph is 5.5m, more expensive than last year. not a great option, but does like a shot now and again, so with an attacking team might actually be a decent option.
    - obviously starting would be a punt

Fabian Delph made fewer successful through balls (2) the past 2 league seasons than:

      Phil Jones
      Lee Cattermole
      Shola Ameobi
      Mathieu Debuchy

haha. well i suppose he can't be that good an fpl option then 😳
3 goals and 7 assists in last 2 seasons, but he got some more in cup games, and that's for goal-allergic villa.

but as a player, he brings more than "through-balls". i'm not his biggest fan by any means but was attempting to point out that the rest of the city midfield are a bit crap, and he must be in for games as his english team aspirations were surely part of the negotiations.

I don't see how he gets in the team. He's not a DM, Yaya will play next to the DM, and he's no good further forward.

I imagine his game time will come off the bench, against minnows, or in the cups.

            • 14 Years
            10 years, 4 months ago

maybe he's not a classic DM, he's really an all-out CM. but i think he can be made to play DM if needs be. he's a bit of an energy bunny, mopping up the ball with enough skill to bring the ball forward. you don't have to be a rubbish ball player to fit the bill at DM!

              • 12 Years

I've not seen anything in him that makes me think he'd be a good DM.

His main strengths, imo, is his energy playing b2b, and ball carrying. Playing as a specialised DM isn't easy, and I certainly see no reason why he should be starting ahead of Fernandinho. His form has been up and down, but he is a very good player.

For comparison last year, per 90:

Fernandindo made 2.9 tackles compared to 1.74 for Delph.
Fernandindo made 2.37 tackles compared to 1.41 for Delph.

yeah i'll agree to a point that being a specialised DM is difficult, but personally i think there's no need for a specialist DM, it's come to mean someone who isn't a good footballer almost. the best teams don't have one. busquets at barca for example is hardly a DM as such, certainly not in the fernandinho sense. are those stats from their head to heads?

The stats are via squawka's comparison matrix. These are their numbers per 90 mins across the whole of last season in the PL.

The best teams do generally have DM's, but the best teams need DM's who are also very good on the ball.

Busquets is one of the smartest DM's in world football at breaking up play. His positional play is second to none.

What lessons learned from last season are you going to apply this season? What mistakes are you going to avoid?

    For me:
    1) I will start with Ivan and keep him there whether he starts strong or not attacking wise. Over the course of the season he will come good and will score his usual 3-5 goals and assists and the CSs will always come. Jumping on and off Chelsea defense just makes you lose the points.

    2) Save a transfer more often and avoid hits as much as possible. I will use Mark's strategy of having 2FTs whenever possible. Being able to make 3 transfers for a -4 can help revamp the team from time to time.

    3) Don't waste transfers and definitely never take hits on bandwagons that clearly will crash eventually. Palace's Murray and Bolasie come to mind.

The chief football pundit in the Racing Post once wrote that the unexpected happens uncomfortably more often than the expected in football. I expect Sterling to flop so he'll probably be a sensation.

Are villa going down this year? They lost the fulcrum of the team who got the goals and thier captain as well.
Will Sherwood make Villa the Spurs B team?

      As of now, yes.

They've lost Vlaar, Delph, Benteke AND Cleverly.

I imagine they'll spend a fair amount of wonga though to avoid relegation.

    Saw the Villa friendly earlier

    Teams were

    1st half team

Bunn, Cissokho, Richards, Clark, Hutton, Bacuna, Westwood, Gardner, Sinclair, Gil, Agbonlahor

2nd half team Bunn, Richardson, Baker, Donacien, Mason, Calder, Cole, Robinson, Tonev, N’Zogbia, Kozak.

Formation for the 1st half was a 4-4-1-1

    Some notes

Bacuna was played as right winger in the 1st half with hutton at right back. Richards was at center back. Gill was in the hole and he was very good think he will play a lot, Gill looks like a proper Spanish player. Sherwood has said he will be involved a lot this season! The reason why he wasent was because Sherwood didn't think he was right for a relegation battle last season! Agbonlahor was up front and his pace caused there defense problems he had 3 good chances on another day he could of got a hat trick! Not much happened in the second half!

Benteke didnt play as hes closing in on a move to liverpool as you know! Grealish was not involved due to picking up an injury in training. Okore is recovering from a knee problem so he is staying at home. Brad guzan is on gold cup duty so he wont get back until some time in august.
