Our community writers have been on fine form over the past week, presenting us with one of the busiest periods for articles on record.

Fantasy Premier League Bonus Point changes, squad rotation and goalkeeper selection were among the array of issues assessed. It was also a bumper week for Hot Topics, as we look back on discussions on Fantasy football’s unofficial achievements, the best premium players on offer and also welcome the youngest new recruit to the Fantasy Football Scout family.

The Community Articles

The changes to Fantasy Premier League’s Bonus Point System (BPS) was the subject of The 3rd Turd’s impressive research this week. Incredibly he has managed to configure next season’s changes to last season’s games to find out just who will be the winners and losers when it comes to bonus allocation.

Another stellar piece of analysis was unveiled by The Shoemaker, newly established as one of the community’s top new contributors. This time he examined the subject of squad rotation, assessing those teams with the most and least settled sides.

Rotation of a different nature was the focus of O’Shaughnessy latest article, in which he considered the best strategy for captains at the start of the season. This was an issue also picked up by Match of the Dan later in the week.  Le Saux Solid Crew’s look at Fantasy Football’s best all round attacking players in recent years proved further, essential reading in the search for the best armband selection.

As Fantasy managers prepare for Gameweek 1, price is always a primary consideration. This week saw a flurry of community articles offering sound advice for those in search of value players.

Kompany man’s focus was the best bang for your buck goalkeepers, while p00sbrown took an in depth look at the budget assets available in Watford’s squad. Chicken Mandy also has an eye on value in his pick of the best Tottenham prospects.

Triggerlips has also been looking at price and the time-honoured tactic of selecting a cheap fifth midfielder to afford the premium captain candidates elsewhere. But, he wonders, is 2015/16 the season to ditch the strategy and splash the cash on all five midfielders? The search for value continued in TM245‘s look at Value Over Replacement Player theory, which considered the best value midfielders as well forwards.

When the FPL player price list was announced there were more than a few surprises, with the majority of the community overestimating many price tags, according to the results from Dat Guy’s Price Prediction Challenge. Congratulations though to the crystal ball gazing skills of Henrzd, who had the best predictions.

The Sky Sports game also launched this week and our resident expert Disable was on hand to offer advice in our dedicated Rate My Team (RMT) article.

Finally, we wanted to hark back beyond the last week to The Sarjeant’s superb analysis of Southampton’s conveyor belt of young talent – a terrific insight into a club that’s been feeding our Fantasy Football squads in recent years and may well do for seasons to come.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Later this month we have big plans regarding the steady stream of “Rate My Team” or “RMT” posts coming in. In the meantime, the community offered their advice on RMT etiquette to ensure that they attract replies.

A number of Hot Topics over the week took a look at some of the key names already featuring in many early Fantasy football draft teams. Branislav Ivanovic has emerged as the most popular premium priced defender, according to our poll. While for Wakey Manchester City’s David Silva is a name that should be top of the list of midfield candidates and Parm took a look at Alexis Sanchez’ Fantasy returns with and without some of Arsenal’s key men on the pitch.

More than half of FPL teams already own Eden Hazard but Rattan64 ponders whether Fantasy managers could be better off with 2.5 million in their pockets by drafting in his cheaper Chelsea team mate Cesc Fabregas instead?

A team with no shortage of choice in midfield is Man United, who this week added Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastien Schweinsteiger to a midfield that already boats Juan Mata and Memphis Depay. Doosra, however, is unimpressed and sparked a lively discussion this week after declaring the Red Devil’s revamped midfield a mess. In contrast, Wild Rover thinks the summer spending spree shows a side mounting a genuine title challenge.

Reacting quickly to the form of players such as United’s new recruits early on in the season is amongst the key advice on offer in Birdman77’s discussion on increasing team value in FPL. Reacting to transfer developments is also important, with Younes Kaboul’s move from Tottenham to Sunderland prompting Fantasy Noob to launch a debate on the most nailed-on Black Cat defenders.

Amongst the toughest players to predict a rise in form from are those from promoted teams. Yu Suk Young took this look back at some of the promoted players that proved a worthy investment. The Puntmaster also provides some useful information about those new to the Premier League with this update on his research into new recruits and promoted teams’ players. While Champs took a look at some of those promoted stars that failed to deliver.

Speaking of delivery, Granville popped by with the happy news that this week Mark welcomed a new addition to the family, with the birth of his daughter Edith. While Edith is the youngest birthday marked, this week also saw our resident Southampton expert Lucy celebrate her birthday, which she shares with former Saints star Gareth Bale.

Finally, one of this week’s most popular posts was Bsloebadger’s discussion on unofficial achievements in FPL, such as the Bench Buster, where your bench outscores your starting 11, and Captain Fantastic, where your armband selection delivers returns for 10 weeks in a row.

The Members Tables

With goalkeepers’ stock rising following a change to the bonus points Davejug1’s table went on the hunt for the most prolific penalty savers on offer.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

    Question for UFPL.

Who do you think will be the best defensive teams across the season?
    - Chelsea and West Brom?

And which defences do you think will hold the most value?
    - Leicester, Norwich, Sunderland?

Any of the top 5 clubs defenders should do well obviously,
WBA offer good value as do Leicester, Watford and Bournemouth rotate perfect
Not that impressed with Sunderlands 4.5's would rather have Panti or shell out for PVA
End of the day have 8 nailed on defenders, you only need 3 c/s's

Repost from earlier seeing as people are talking about it right now:

Does anyone think it's worth holding off an Aguero until GW4? He's likely to get a cameo away to a Pulis team, followed by (CHE, eve). Is it wise to spend 13m on someone in that situation from the off?

I'm toying with the idea of playing my 1st wildcard in GW4 to get in Aguero for those fixtures, along with Sanchez and some bandwagons. This would allow the choice of some risky(ish) players in GW1, like Walcott and Lukaku in the knowledge that they can be offloaded in GW4. It would also allow you to get a 4.0 keeper + defender at the start and ensure that your players have good fixtures.

    Something like this:
    Ruddy/Rudd
    Azpi/Williams/PvA/Huth/4.0
    Walcott/Cesc/Mane/Haz/4.5
    Rooney/Lukaku/Sakho

    Pros:
    -avoid Aguero(and Sanchez) cameo(s)
    -easy transfer in of Aguero+Sanchez
    -easy to catch early bandwagons
-get a great start to the season
-allows you to take early risks with potentially huge reward
-maximise points potential with 4.0 keeper+defender

    Cons:
-may miss price rise from Aguero
    -uses up your 1st WC

Why is it, people use as an argument in favour of one player over another the "he played less minutes so if he played the same amount he would have scored higher"

I've had it used on me several times this week. For example:

Player A scores 200 points from 3000 minutes
Player B scores 150 points from 2000 minutes.

So player A has 0.66 ppm, player B 0.75, but player A scored higher.

The argument is that had Player B played 3000, he would have scored 225.
      But he didn't.

Whether the reason is he got suspended, or injured, or rested or rotated or subbed early a lot. Its a weak argument.

If a player is prone to getting injured or suspended or rotated or subbed early etc. then the same should be true next season too. And the guy who played 3000 minutes plus will likely play every week and not get subbed off and resultantly score higher.

Plus you wont have transfers enforced by injuries or suspensions.

i done it to you earlier Sanchez. The point I was making was that Agueros ppm was better than Hazards last season. Making the assumption that they will be seeing the same minutes in the coming season that would lead you to think that Aguero would be more likely to amass a better score.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 10 Years
          10 years, 4 months ago

And when did Aguero last have an injury free season?

          1. GREENDREAMS11
            • 16 Years
            10 years, 4 months ago

you are making the assumption that as he has had injuries in the past that the same will happen this season, another assumption would be that the person Sanchez referred to earlier (Hazard) will have no injuries this coming season.

            1. Ruth_NZ
              • 10 Years
              10 years, 4 months ago

There is such a thing as track record. Aguero has averaged around 2100 minutes per season over 4 seasons and has never more than 2500 in any one of them.

Therefore the assumption you posted above is on shaky ground.

When selecting your team, do you think to yourself, " hmmm , I wont pick him this year because he got an injury last year or the year before". Has it stopped you from buying Aguero or Sturridge for example ? Personally, I haven't. it's the risk you have to take sometimes

Terry henry, Cristiano ronaldo, frank lampard, cesc fabregas, steve gerrard, luis suarez, RVP, eden hazard, alexis sanchez all good examples. Rooney was that one year he got a run up front & scored about 30 league goals.

Yea captaincy is indeed a very big factor that makes (or does not make) a player essential.

So 'essentialy' you mean, a player who is fixture proof (not considering ownership, because a fixture proof player will be highly owned anyway) ?

I used to think that it was players who, if I didn't own, would make me hide behind the metaphorical sofa if they were playing. However, Walcott and Kolorov make me do that and they are clearly not essential.

I think it depends on the price point. For premium players you should be happy captaining them every week. For budget to medium players it comes down to their price making it a no brainier to own them (which subsequently effects their ownership). Kane was essential for much of last season but he was not someone I would be happy captaining every week. However, his price made him essential.

essential = a low value player who consistently delivers e.g Kane/Austin/Siggy last year

and also = high value value players who consistently deliver e.g. Aguero/Sanchez/Hazard i.e. captain material

The trick is knowing whose going to to be most essential over a 6 week period and planning around who is more essential.

So Glen Murray in the last part of the season, last year was essential in that sense during his 3-4 match streak (Though I would have been delighted, if I had him) ?

Form is probably not a factor when analyzing whether someone is essential or not, is it ?

        For me, 'Essential' is anyone,
Who is one of the top two owned player in the game..

So in that sense, you gotta own those two players. Which turns out to be Hazard and Aguero for the past couple of years.

All the other players imo are only appearing to be essential for your team by your own judgement (right or wrong it may be).

For me essential is: a player who scores so many points that no other possible combination of players can compensate. As such, they are pretty rare: Suarez two seasons ago, rvp the year before that.

Very few players are truly essential.
Many would've considered Kane as "essential" last season but I managed to come 238th without ever owning him.
I never had him as I am a stubborn Arsenal fan who refuses to have a Tottenham shirt in my team.

Plan on wildcarding early and him against Bournemouth is appealing.

Perhaps Yaya has had it. The others in MF are all new to clubs/league.

Yeap. Thinking about doing Rooney Sterling --> Aguero / ^6.5mid.

Then get a united mid who's been nailed on and performing as united cover
