Scout Notes – Kane Leaves It Late

Harry Kane’s 88th-minute goal hands Spurs a win and 1.2 million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers a respectable outcome for their decision to hand him the Gameweek 28 armband.

Only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (1.6m) was captained by more than the Tottenham striker as the pair’s Golden Boot duel goes on, with Kane one goal ahead on 24.

Yet in the FPL head-to-head, Salah has now outscored Kane in each of the last four Gameweeks, bettering him by 46 points to 18 in that period.

And looking at that personal battle across the season, the Egyptian again prevails by 16 Gameweeks to 11, with one draw.

Both players ended Gameweek 28 without any bonus points, however.

Kane was profligate in the 1-0 win at Crystal Palace, missing two big chances and firing four of his six shots off target.

He has now scored a single goal in each of his last three matches, only to miss out on bonus points every time.

Then again, on another day Kane might have had at least one chance to score more from the penalty spot, with what looked like a clear foul on Ben Davies by Palace keeper Wayne Hennessey going unpunished.

A six-point haul was just about enough for the 158,000+ managers who made him the third most signed player of Gameweek 28, and his winner again underlined his peerless record on the road – Kane now has 13 goals, and six from his last four starts, away from home.

Handed a place in our Scout Picks, Christian Eriksen provided the assist – his first since Gameweek 22 – from a corner to reward the 112,000+ who bought him in following his star turn, and goal, at Juventus in the Champions League.

The Dane strengthened his claim as the go-to option in Tottenham’s midfield. He fired five efforts on goal today and has now created 14 chances for team-mates in the last four Gameweeks – only Eden Hazard (15) has more.

But the 11.9% who own Son Heung-min had to make do with a 10-minute substitute appearance from their man.

The South Korean had started 13 successive league matches before today, but the intense competition for the third attacking midfielder spot means that he no longer looks a secure pick.

Erik Lamela got the nod at Selhurst Park, while new signing Lucas Moura again caught the eye when introduced from the bench.

Lamela was also preferred to Son in the recent trip to Juventus, meaning the latter’s only start in the last three matches was at Rochdale in the FA Cup.

Son had failed to score in the previous four Gameweeks and today’s sub role may well be the final straw for his 11.9% owners – he is already the fourth most sold player in FPL over the last 24 hours.

Furthermore, should Spurs win their midweek replay with Rochdale, their home match with Newcastle will be taken out of Gameweek 31.

Backline to the fore

Gameweek 28’s most popular purchase was Ben Davies, who was acquired by 293,000+ managers ahead of yesterday’s deadline.

Spurs’ 13th clean sheet of the season and a single bonus point brought in a good haul for the Welshman, who has now started eight successive league matches.

Fellow defender Davinson Sanchez picked up two bonus points, while Palace’s James Tomkins – who claimed a clean sheet having been withdrawn before Kane’s goal – was awarded the maximum.

An ankle injury meant Jan Vertonghen failed to start in the league for the first time this season and Toby Alderweireld also missed out with a minor hamstring complaint.

Mauricio Pochettino’s line-up for Gameweek 29’s visit from Huddersfield this Saturday might well involve other, less enforced, changes as it falls just four days before the second leg of their Champions League tie with Juventus.

Spurs face Rochdale in the FA Cup this Wednesday, so presumably the likes of Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose, who were rested today, will get the nod there.

Serge Aurier is suspended for the Juventus match and looks highly likely to feature against Huddersfield as a result.

However, on the left, the situation is a little cloudier. Should Pochettino look to start Davies against Juventus, there’s a chance that Rose could come in against the Terriers and earn a first start since Gameweek 20.

More pain for Palace

Roy Hodgson now has an injury list long enough to create an entire team, which forced him to hand 20-year-old Aaron Wan-Bissaka a debut at right-back.

By the time the match was done, the Palace boss had even more issues.

Tomkins was withdrawn with what appeared to be another knock and could now be a doubt for the Gameweek 29 visit from Man United.

Loan signing Timothy Fosu-Mensah will already miss that match as he is ineligible to play against his parent club, leaving Hodgson clinging to the hope that Mamadou Sakho will be back from the calf injury that has kept him out for the last two Gameweeks.

If not, then a United attack that rediscovered some form against Chelsea today could well profit from the makeshift defence they’ll face next Monday evening.

Chelsea themselves then entertain the Eagles in Gameweek 30, while a home match with Hodgson’s men in a reduced Gameweek 31 could be good news for Huddersfield’s Fantasy prospects.

    1. Used my WC, like my side but the yellow flags also seem to like it... Thinking save even if Ver, Monreal and Sterling are out next gw as all 3 are good long term options. Sound ok in the context of my team? May also do, vert and monreal to Alonso and Tark/Fernandez for 32.

    Fabianski (Hennessey)
    Vertonghen Monreal Robertson (Simpson Lowton)
    Salah Sterling Mahrez Eriksen (Carroll)
    Kane Firmino Vardy

    2. Wildcarded in view to free hitting gw 31 and focusing on the dgws given I have 8 players for BGW 35 without any new info, sound ok? I have 4 for 31.

Just wondering why everyone thinks you should keep Sterling. He has no fixture in 31 and his fixtures aren't good until gw 35 and by then they likely will have the title wrapped up so there will be loads of rotation. Many other midfielders seem to be better options to me.

definately a risk but I think it'll work out. Even if he does better than the person you bring in at first(which I don't think will happen), most will hang on to him too long to the point where they start getting one point cameos from him, letting the player you brought in easily out score him

I guess you knew he was playing well in these games and just got unlucky. If it were Costa instead of Morata up front he would have a lot more points.

Not interested in Eriksen, Mahrez and Sterling (when fit) at a cheaper price? Yes he'll do well but I'd argue any of those 3 could match or outscore him from now till the end of the season.

No and I'll explain why Kloppo.

Sterling - not so hot away from home and they're away a lot for foreseeable future.
Mahrez - big question mark as to his mentality now and without a transfer window to play for round the corner
Eriksen - brilliant option but I think Hazard will outside him by quite a bit. If Mané's twin brother comes back I will switch to Erik

Sorry I didn't read properly, you want Kane.

However, I also don't have Kane, and I'm happy to keep my forward line without him due the the good value there. I also don't want to spend a transfer on a player with no fixture in GW31, though I'm aware that Kane could well punish me for ignoring him. Still, I hope to make up those points elsewhere and in GW31.

The answer to your question depends on if you are using FH in GW31. If not, perhaps Siggy or Walcott. If so, perhaps Sane, Mkhi or D. Silva.

Same. I'd try and get Kane, Firmino and Vardy up front if that's possible. Sanchez to enable it. If you don't have Firmino then would still try to get Kane in alongside Vardy rather than in for him.

Could Arsenal v City be in danger of being postponed? Quite a lot of snow forecasted this week in London including Thursday. Pitch won’t be a problem but travel could be a factor. Would be a disaster for my team as I have Aguero, Sterling and Otamendi, and only 3 points on my bench. However, if it had to be rearranged, both teams are free in GW31...

Which week do you think is better to WC and why, 32 or 33? Still have my FH for 35.

      - I think that my GW 32 team will have better fixtures pre wildcard than post.as Spurs and Chelsea play each other and I plan on investing heavily in both teams when wildcarding
      - It also gives me more time to see what others are doing and see who's on form
      - Everyone else seems to be saying 32 but contrary to popular belief, if you want to play the market and make some money during the wildcard period, it's better to wildcard a different week to everyone else as wildcard transfers don't count towards price change so prices should change less frequently.

Probably asap after gw31. Know what you mean about price changes, but if everyone reacts to that perspective then...

Him and Salah the season keepers imo. The man is a rampaging winger in all but name who loves getting into the box and hits a quality FK. And for a winger he gets you CS points!

It's sandwiched between dgws in 34 and 37.
The players you want for the bgw35 won't be the players you want for the dgws

              Thanks mate

I currently have 4 players for GW 31
Should I just play FH or having 7-8 players might be enough for AVG?

7 or 8 is plenty imo. The returns from the other remaining games look much more fruitful.
Save the fh for 35. ...unless you've used your wc or bb already. in which case your strategy may be to use it in one of the dgws

Really, no City/Arsenal players despite them having Burnley and Huddersfield respectively or Liverpool players? Are you really going to get rid of Salah and Firmino. Personally I'm happy with about 7-8 dgws for 37 with a few strong single gwers e.g. Firmino and Salah, Sterling and Monreal. Free hit 31 as I defo don't want to carry the majority of those players in my team past that gw.

Yes but only if you're happy to hold Vardy imo. He goes on streaks regularly and then does nothing for a while.

They are on paper. If I'm honest I don't like Vardy right now. Leicester were awful yesterday and I expect both sides to sit deep against him and that chokes him out of the game usually. Then again Bournemouth defence is a joke.

Many thanks mate. Chilwell you would think but he started Fuchs last week so there is a nailedness issue there too. Need to see if Vert and Jones are ok. Yeah I need to get my bench covered. I'm thinking Alonso and Pereira to DDG and Christensen for the doubles and upgrade Mbemba to a cheapie. Any thoughts appreciated.

Similar situation as in having no WC but hoping to save FT this week which will allow a mini WC in 30 before I use FH in 31. You can keep Pogba for one more game, could score well at Palace.
