Scout Notes – Walcott Decides Low Key Clash

Theo Walcott strikes to secure an Everton victory and end Newcastle United’s run of wins, as Fantasy managers benefit from defensive returns.

Walcott converted a Yannick Bolasie cross at the second attempt, mis-controlling initially before seeing the ball ricochet back to him via DeAndre Yedlin.

It marked only the second match in which Walcott has found the net for the Toffees following a brace back in Gameweek 25.

A run of just one assist in nine Gameweeks has understandably seen Walcott decline and stall as a Fantasy attraction – he went into Monday’s encounter owned by just 169,000+ managers.

Some 8,900 of those had the foresight to bring in the winger with their Free Hit; it meant that Walcott was found in just 5.7% of squads built with that chip for Gameweek 35.

There faith in Everton’s defence was stronger.

A quiet night for Pickford

Having kept two clean sheets in the previous three at home before last night’s shut-out, the Magpies’ visit provided enough incentive for significant Free Hit investment.

Jordan Pickford was signed by 40,000+ managers before Saturday’s deadline, second only to Ederson among FPL goalkeepers.

But another 40,000 also acquired the keeper with their Free Hit, meaning that he was found in 26.1% of the chip’s squads.

Ironically, Pickford had a restful evening and was called upon to make just two saves; it’s only the second time in nine Gameweeks that he has failed to produce a save point.

As a result, the bonus points went elsewhere, with Michael Keane and Leighton Baines the chief benefactors.

Keane was a major differential in the Toffees backline. He earned the maximum bonus but was limited to an eight-point return following a booking. The centre-back was part of just 307,000 squads, which included 7,000 Free Hit managers.

Baines was a far more popular target.

Some 18,000 used a Gameweek transfer on the full-back, while another 41,000 acquired him with the Free Hit. Like Keane, he delivered eight points on the night.

Everton’s assets are now set to fade from view in Fantasy terms. While their fixtures are strong (hud SOU whu), they offer no Double Gameweek and continue to be erratic as a source of both defensive and attacking returns.

Magpies fail the chipless

While a good proportion of Free Hit managers benefited from the Everton clean sheet, those without the chip active who invested in Newcastle’s budget assets were left empty-handed.

Striker Ayoze Perez was brought in by 136,000 ahead of Gameweek 35, making him the eighth most signed player.

That investment followed a run of three goals and two assists from his last three starts.

But despite firing five shots on goal, Perez blanked, along with budget midfielder Kenedy, who was acquired by another 13,000 managers prior to the deadline.

Walcott’s goal also denied the clean sheet, as those holding keeper Martin Dubravka and full-back Paul Dummett were disappointed.

But unlike Everton, there is still some life in Newcastle’ Fantasy appeal.

They face a home fixture with a resurgent West Brom in Gameweek 36, before two fixtures in Gameweek 37 as they travel to Watford and Spurs.

Neither of those fixtures scream big returns, though Dummett and Kenedy will likely be retained and recruited as cut-price options – particularly by late Bench Boosters – for the double-header.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thoughts on owning Kane for the run in?

Doesn’t seem match sharp or likely to catch Salah. Are we best avoiding?

I can't imagine going without Kane this week. Watford get battered every time away at Spurs and are already on the beach.

Players have a lot more power these days.
It’s not entirely up to Klopp at all.

Sorry but that's just a bland generalization.

If Klopp says to Salah, who from all interviews is a very mellow character, that he wants to rest him so they can get into the Champions League Final he's not going to argue with him because he will want to get into that Final and he clearly has a good, trusting relationship with his manager.

I can see both sides honestly but have to agree CL progression and the team will come first. I think the individual player aspect does definitely have something though, in this case Salah chasing records and Liverpool wanting to keep him as happy as possible to try and stave off Real Madrid and such

Finding it very tricky to manouvre Jesus into the team in 37 with a view to switch funds back into the midfield for Salah in 38. I could do Willian, Salah & Alonso > Sterling, KDB & Swansea def for a hit next week then Salah back for free in 38 but it means no Jesus and sticking with bench man C.Austin for the double instead. Any thoughts ?

    1. MTPockets
        6 years, 16 days ago

The only way I could do it is via Alonso (assuming I wouldn't avoid/sell a mci mid), but even that costs an extra hit and keeps Austin. Have largely resigned myself to not having him again, but if Kane somehow keeps the golden boot race competitive into 38 may take that hit.

        1. MTPockets
            6 years, 16 days ago

            * Actually that's wrong - could do Mahrez/Alonso to Salah/Robertson in 38 for free, but means playing Austin (MCI) or Cook (bur) or Vertonghen (LEI) which I'm not keen on.

Couldn't you get Silva over KDB for the extra funds?

I can see a CS for Vert, could do worse that week....

I could get Silva but that then means another -4 for Jesus and then wouldn't have funds to switch back to Salah without another hit so don't think it's worth it.

            DDG, Ryan
            Alonso, Lowton, Valencia, Kiko, Morgan
            Salah, Mahrez, Alli, Pogba, Willian

        Salah - Mahrez - Gross - Sterling
        Barnes - Kane - Jesus

What do we think about B.Davies as an option?

Rose currently injured, surely won't be starting vs Watford this Monday. If he recovers he probably gets a game in DGW37, leaving Davies with 2 of wba, NEW, LEI.

Despite (probably) not getting a DGW those fixtures are strong enough for Davies to deliver a good return.

Wait until Poch presser I guess.

Question is whether you'd prefer Vert who surely gets all 4 remaining games, or Davies, who will get 3 at best.

Nope, read somewhere they now just get 40 medals and they give them away as they feel right. With that said I think you need to play 5 games to be guaranteed one but you can get one even if you don't play 5. Correct me if I'm wrong.

And i will have 1.3ITB with which i can replace willain

        On WC, how is this:

        Fabianski / Mccarthy
        Valencia / Smalling / Vertonghen / Yedlin / Masuaku
        Salah / Eriksen / Sterling / Lingard / Kenedy
        Kane / Jesus / Ayew

GW37: Salah to KDB and BB with 15 DWGers
        GW38: KDB back to Salah

Thinking of Vertonghen and Masuaku to Davies and Van der Hoorn/Masuaku.

        Thoughts?

        Robertson & Salah ??

I own both the above. Neither guaranteed to play this week.

        Would you

        a) Robertson > Jones (-4)
        b) Salah > Eriksen (-4)
        c) Both (-8)
        d) Hold

Bearing in mind I want ManU and Eriksen for the double gameweek anyway.

I also can not afford smalling for Robertson but if I sacrifice salah then smalling becomes an option instead of jones.

Every which way is a gamble. Depends on where tou want to gamble I guess..

        Thoughts, Cheers

Salah > Eriksen (-4) could be insane move if Salah starts
I would hold off with this transfer, there might be a leaked lineup before the game

How's this for a plan for GW36 and GW37 with no chips remaining?

GW36 team - Captain Salah or Sterling:

        DDG
        Vert, Smalling, Lowton
        Salah, Sterling, Eriksen, Son, Mili
        Jesus, Vardy
        (Ryan) (Barnes, Morgan, Mustafi)

For GW37 take -8 hit to do:
Vardy, Salah, Son > Kane, Mahrez, Lingard

Will give me 11 DGW players:

        DDG
        Vert, Smalling, Mustafi, Morgan
        Sterling, Eriksen, Mahrez, Lingard
        Kane (C), Jesus
        (Ryan) (Mili, Barnes, Lowton)

If RMT tool is anything to go by I will get 100+ points after the hit....

        Sounds like a decent plan?!
