What next for Spurs and FPL managers after Kane ruled out until March?

On Tuesday afternoon, Fantasy Premier League managers were told that Harry Kane (£12.5m) would be out until March.

The injury news is a landmark event in this 2018/19 campaign as mass sales are expected, and a potential shift in the FPL template with it.

The Spurs man had previously registered attacking returns in 10 of his last 12 Premier League matches and was proving a useful asset to own.

With him now not returning to training until early March following damage to ligaments in his ankles, there is suddenly a lot of money to spend.

Marcus Rashford (£7.4m) feels like the obvious alternative, having averaged seven points per game over the last seven Gameweeks.

The Manchester United forward seems fully capable of sustaining that run of form, with 10 shots on target in the last four matches, the second best in the league.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils’ have an appealing run of fixtures which sees them host Brighton and Burnley next, before travelling to Leicester and Fulham after that.

Moving to Rashford instead of the more expensive Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.3m) or Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) could also allow greater spending in midfield.

However, aside from Rashford, or perhaps for those already in possession of him, there may still be some interested in the fact that Spurs themselves have appealing fixtures of their own – and reasonably priced options too.

They visit Fulham in Gameweek 23 which looks the perfect opportunity to show how they can perform without Kane.

After that, it’s home meetings with Watford and Newcastle, neither of which look particularly sound at the back this season.

Of course, the key question for Spurs is who replaces Kane in the centre-forward role, especially with Son Heung-min (£8.7m) going off to the Asian Cup with South Korea.

Given his country’s standing in that continent, they are one of the favourites to win the competition so the former Bayer Leverkusen star could be unavailable until nearly the start of February.

Could that mean Fernando Llorente (£5.6m) has to stick around at Wembley for longer than expected, considering he was looking likely to leave in the January transfer window?

According to the local press, there does seem to be a chance the Spaniard could start against Fulham at least.

Llorente has come in for some praise of late with a hat-trick against Tranmere in the FA Cup while he was credited with helping fashion some chances for Kane in the closing stages of Spurs’ defeat to Manchester United last time out.

While that’s not much to set the world on fire, it might be enough for Pochettino to consider him, as the only recognised centre-forward truly available to him.

As we said, that’s the view of the local press anyway, who were keen to report than Vincent Janssen is “not in my plans” in the words of Pochettino himself.

The only other alternatives to fill Kane’s boots on the pitch from a positional sense are Lucas Moura (£6.8m) and Erik Lamela (£6.1m), both of which have some experience playing in a false-nine role.

The former was actually playing in a more advanced position to Kane earlier this season, so that could easily be repeated against Fulham.

However, he is still fighting to be fit in time after picking up a knee injury against West Ham.

Also, whether Moura can play as a lone striker remains to be seen, as he had the close support of Kane when deployed as a forward back in September and October.

With options in the academy reportedly not in a position to step up at this stage, maybe the only other player that could be turned to is Dele Alli (£8.9m).

He also has some experience of leading the line and actually has a history of doing well when Kane is not in the side.

Since the beginning of the 2016/17 season, Spurs have played 14 games where Kane has either been completely absent or has had a cameo, and of those, they have won 10, drawn three and lost only once.

In those matches, the top-scorer for Pochettino’s men is Alli with 10 goals although it must be said that Son played a big part in these games too, meaning the Englishman wasn’t used as the forward.

What Spurs do with the striker position at this point remains unclear but there are still potential risky avenues that could reap rewards.

Anyone of Llorente, Moura or Lamela being handed the furthest forward place in a side as threatening as Spurs would deserve serious consideration when you look at their remarkably cheap price points – it’s just whether Pochettino can keep their attacking output at a similar level with Kane as well as Son.

Best TAA replacement from these? 😉

    A) Shaw - best fixtures, some offensive threat, probably United has best defense overall from options I consider

    B) Holebas - set pieces, offensive threat, mixed fixtures, Watford defense performance is hard to predict

    C) Pereira - much of offensive threat, terrible fixtures, Leicester defense performance also hard to predict

Shaw now in place of TAA and Digne to Pereira in a few weeks time?

just captained sterling this week. not unhappy but not satisfied as well. I would've been in between him and pogba if I hadn't brought salah this week :). Sterling was my choice for VC but I changed it to pogba as sterling now started 3 PL games in a row and I fear that a rotation is coming soon. Hope this helps

Advice would be appreciated please on these probable transfers:

    Loris
    Van Dijk Lindelof Digne AWB
    Salah Hazard Pogba Richarlison
    Kane Jiménez

    Bench: Hamer Diop Hudson-Odoi Kamara

    Kane & Richarlison transfer out
    Rashford & Sterling in.

        I disagree

Remember when Salah wasn’t worth the extra over Mané and TAA basically gives you the same as Robertson?

Over time the difference will tell, especially when Mendy returns!

Bench is in trouble as well. Odoi not a regular neither is Kamara. But as long as you got a wildcard, its no prob I guess

Sane more nailed for now until Mendy comes back.

mendy is coming back in 2-3 weeks though. and sterling has been returning points for 3 consecutive games now. A haul is not that far ahead imo.

I won't want Sane in 3 weeks as he blanks.
I had Sterling for most of last season & he was great.
I think he plays better with Kun & KDB so you could be right.
However for that price I want him starting every week.

Guys, I could do with some advice. My bench is wrecked.

    Currently on a -8 with 3.7 itb

    Lloris
    Robbo Digne Doherty
    Salah Hazard Pogba Martial Rich
    Rash Jimenez

    Subs: Hamer Lovren* Kamara* Peltier*

    A) Wildcard, bench is wrecked and your on a -8 soon to be -12

    B)
    Martial + Kamara -> Auba (C) + Puncheon -4 (gw24) Peltier -> Bednarek (gw25) and hope for a Lovren return in between.

It all comes down to either a -12 + designated transfers for the next two rounds or hit the wildcard?

    Sorry for long post.

how many more changes would you realistically want to make on the wc? i dont like the utd treble up but other than that your team looks strong for next few gws.

But then again already taking a -8 and other issues, then its kind of the situation that a WC was made for.....

    I'm thinking of doing siggy->lamela

    Current squad:

    Fabi/Hamer
    Robbo/Digne/Kola/Doherty/Holebas
    Salah/Haz/Sane/Pogba/Siggy
    Rash/Jiminez/Kamara

    0.6ITB 1FT

Transfers I want to do are siggy-lamela, fabi->lloris or allison, defender (probably kola?)->vvd

Not sure if I should use any hits on this though, don't think so.

    Fab
    Doherty Shaw Robbo Digne
    Salah Pogba Anderson Richa
    Rashford Auba

Can make Richa to Haz or even Anderson to Sterling after next GW... though I like Sane and Alli for next matches...

    Patricio
    Robertson Digne Doherty
Salah (C) Hazard Sane Pogba Richarlison

What are the dangers of an early Wildcard?

Is there any adavantage in playing one early, or should you always wait for the DGW's?

    1. Holmes
      • 10 Years
      5 years, 3 months ago

not always. if your team needs a WC, then it maybe a danger to delay the WC. Whats the point of dropping points and rank every week if it can be sorted by WC in just one week for free.

With couple of hits here and there, DGWs can be navigated.

    2. toystory2wasok
      • 10 Years
      5 years, 3 months ago

wildcard + benchboost + freehit during DGWs is a numbers game and will get mad points, but it depends. if half your team is injured and the other half isn't playing, an earlier WC would be better in the long run.

there's no right/wrong answer, but i think the situation would have to be pretty extreme for the earlier wildcard to beat a good DGW plan.

    3. Now I'm Panicking
      • 9 Years

Only use one early if you have to - you are likely to be up against it during DGW/BGW season, but that won't matter if you are totally screwed in the present.

But looks really good now youve done it. Maybe punt on Aguero over Auba for one round? Switch next

I’d stick with Richarlison for the next few

            Just done...
            Auba/Sane/Moura
            To
            Kun/Haz/Nasri

            Safer bets?

I don’t think so personally. Didn’t watch Nasri so not sure, apparently looked good. Haz is on his last chance and I think Aguero will share game time with Jesus more than he did at the start of the season so think there’s better value going cheap up too. Good luck with your decision either way.

Would prefer Sterling but depends on cash really.

Sane - cheaper, more nailed, on form, prolly will equal Sterling in the long run -> better value

Very nice. Would personally downgrade AWB to Bednarek and upgrade Fabs to Lloris). You got a benchache each week with that defence

Do Aguero -> Auba next week and your in for some big hauls the next two gameweeks

Yes that’s the plan, I just took the gamble on Aguero for this game week because i know he will defo get some returns if he starts. I have a feeling he will start because they are playing burton again midweek so Jesus might start that one again.

On Wildcard, Which moves look best:

    A) Digne > Doherty
    B) Brooks + Aubamayang > Sane + Jiminez
    C) Llorente > Ings

    Team below:
    Lloris (Button)
David Luiz | Robertson | Doherty (Bednarek, Wan-Bissaka)
Richarlison | Salah | Eriksen | Pogba (Brooks)
    Aubameyang | Rashford | Llorente

Forced to play my WC with too many injuries.

    Currently on:

    Foster/Patricio
    Lindelof/Digne/Bennett/AWB/Bednarek
    Sane/Salah/Hazard/Richarlison/Hojberg
    Auba/Rashford/Jiminez

Too weak in defence? Maybe switch Hazard for a cheaper mid? Pogba and upgrade defence?

    Any feedback butchering appreciated.

      No Liverpool defence?

I would prefer having Pogba and Robbo than Hazard and any of your defenders
