Thursday team news: Shock start for Fernandes but Isak benched

Three Thursday matches end the midweek round of Gameweek 33. At 7:45pm, Everton host Newcastle United alongside Southampton v Bournemouth. Then, at 8:15pm, a big match in the race for a top-four finish – Tottenham Hotspur against Manchester United.

After a picture of Bruno Fernandes (£9.5m) wearing a protective boot caused panic sales and benchings amongst his FPL managers, the Portuguese playmaker starts for Man United to ensure that he’s still yet to miss a league game through injury.

It’s contrasting news for owners of Alexander Isak (£6.8m), as game time management sees him moved to the bench for Callum Wilson (£6.9m).

It’s one of three Newcastle changes, as Miguel Almiron (£5.4m) and Matt Targett (£4.7m) start in place of Jacob Murphy (£4.1m) and Dan Burn (£4.5m). That means centre-back Fabian Schar (£5.1m) is fine to remain alongside Sven Botman (£4.5m) following a hamstring worry. After being signed from opponents Everton in January, Anthony Gordon (£5.1m) will begin the night as an observer.

Their 6-1 thrashing of Spurs led to the sacking of interim head coach Cristian Stellini. A return to the wing-back system is Ryan Mason’s first act in charge, bringing in Richarlison (£8.4m) and Clement Lenglet (£4.8m) for Dejan Kulusevski (£7.8m) and Pape Matar Sarr (£4.2m). The third switch brings goalkeeper Fraser Forster (£3.9m) in for injured Hugo Lloris (£5.4m).

As Fernandes starts, there is only one Man United change from Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final. Jadon Sancho (£7.1m) is in for Anthony Martial (£6.3m), with Harry Maguire (£4.7m) not in the matchday squad at all. Both Marcus Rashford (£7.1m) and Luke Shaw (£5.1m) begin.

Meanwhile, Everton enter the night in 19th position and make three changes from the goalless draw at Crystal Palace. Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.3m) is back from a three-game ban suspension but Mason Holgate (£4.2m) is now serving his own suspension. One of those dropping to the bench is Demarai Gray (£5.2m).

The only side below the Toffees is Southampton and they’ve switched goalkeeper in one of two alterations – Alex McCarthy (£4.3m) replaces Gavin Bazunu (£4.5m). In a boost to their quest for survival, forward Che Adams (£6.0m) is named amongst the substitutes after missing four matches with a calf injury.

Fellow south coast side Bournemouth also make two defensive changes, bringing in Matias Vina (£4.5m) and Marcos Senesi (£4.4m) for Adam Smith (£4.3m) and loanee Jack Stephens (£4.3m), who can’t face his parent club.

Huge ownership of Haaland lot of TC in play on him. I was tempted by Salah but then I saw that 80% people here want to captain him, so decided that I don't want to swim against the tide.

I just don't see him massively outscoring Salah. He will get subbed off as soon as the game is won in these next games

      EO makes it tricky
Saw a sneak of it this week, Haaland 190% EO - might have got a bit more interesting if Salah had hauled and Haaland blanked but in reality Haaland will now have 200% EO pretty much (will be some TCs). Captain who you think scores more, but you have to be confident in Salah outscoring him. Arsenal was not a weak opponent on paper this week for instance.

Don't understand this way of thinking? If it comes off it gives you a nice rank boost. Anyone chasing rank should be thinking about Salah C as it's a great opportunity. What's point in fearing EO ? You are overthinking it

One is essentially high risk, high reward, the other is low risk, low reward
I just remember the pain of captaining Salah over Haaland in GW9 and dropping ~1m rank because of it and it taking 7 GWs to get back to my GW8 rank

Sure Haaland has a tendency to come off early but he only comes off AFTER he's scored. i'm sure he has an arrangement with Pep.

Salah may well outscore him but usually he fails to do so.

'Arry has been a pleasure to own, but time to say goodbye now, so I'm very thankful for the farewell returns...

The top clean sheet odds haven't been successful for about 5 weeks straight now, so it will be interesting to see if either Newcastle or Manchester City can finally somehow break the jinx!

As for (C)aptaincy, some will go Salah(C) for DGW34 but not me, Haaland can wear it again, and fingers crossed, will return for me once again...

Who are you bringing in, and who are you giving the armband to for this DGW?

Everyone on here saying "don't fancy Man U assets to keep a clean sheet" and yet people want Watkins out when he's only blanked in four of his last 14? What am I missing?

Also Kane, 50% ownership. If Haaland wasn't in the league this year people would be creaming over what Kane is doing in that God awful Spurs side. Bamboozling.

But does Watkins have tough games?

Man U - Granted they've kept three CS prior to this, but that was against 19th Everton, 17th Forest and OK Brentford
Wolves - Negative 15 goal difference and they've only just found a bit of form. Albeit they've played a Brentford slightly off the boil (only one win in their last five), conceded to Leicester, and kept a CS against a dreadful Chelsea
Spurs - Haven't kept a CS since CHE in GW25
Liverpool - One CS in their last seven
Brighton - One CS in their last five

Most people want the template 5 mids which leaves 2 attacking spots. Haaland and Jota ( some with Isak who can't get to Jota). He's a benching headache that probably ends up being the one on the bench due to fixtures

Assist rules ruining the game massively and making me want to forget it next year.
Clearly an Isak assist and one of the best you'll ever see. The ball doesn't significantly alter its intended target at all.
    1) if a pen is given for hitting the defenders arm he will get the assist if they score.
    2) if it was an own goal he gets the assist.
    3) if wilson was the so called target and leaves it for Murphy he gets the assist.
    4) Kane can shoot, no intention of it going to Porro, not a direct rebound because Porro takes a touch before shooting. Assist.
5 ) One of the best runs you'll ever see pulls it back into the box (no one knows his intended target) clips the defender for a tap in, not changing direction massively. No assist

Literally embarrassing and no one can tell me it's not corrupt, it's whoever they have in the team at the time.

It's not corrupt, it's just the long-standing rules they have set

I would personally prefer it if they just had points for 'Opta' assists only: so just genuine assists where the player passes the ball directly etc., none of this rebounded shot nonsense. So like on the BBC sport page where the assists tonight for Newcastle were just Willock, Bruno G and for Utd-Spurs Kane x1 and Rashford, Bruno. This would reduce the subjectivity, though would mean fewer points going around.

I then think you should get maybe 2 points for winning a penalty regardless if it is scored or not.

I've been a longstanding advocate of simplifying the assist rule to it being given to the last attacking player to touch the ball.

Would remove a lot of the current uncertainty of is it or ain't it one, and add more fun and points into the game...

    Raya
    Trippier, Shaw, Estupinan
    Salah(VC), Grealish, Rashford, Mitoma, March
    Haaland(TC), Jota
    (Kepa, Watkins, Botman, Mee)

Used FT to bring in Rashford for Mahrez
    1.9 ITB. Anything worth a -4 here?
Maybe Mee to Robertson? Don't have the cash for TAA.

    Steele/Iverson
    Stones/Dalot/TAA/(Coufal/Fodder)
    Mo(C)/KDB/Rash/Mitoma/March
    Haaland/Jota/(Fodder)

Would a NC defender be a better option than Dalot, or too much of a risk they don't end up with a clean sheet. It would have to be Schar as not enough in the bank for Trip

Since FHing, I think I'd take a punt on Dalot!

You know as much as I do. At least I've got him in my squad right now. Not a problem to swap him for any other midfielder if word comes that he isn't. Latest update is that he is Day to Day, but then again, aren't we all?

I've got him in my current FH too, but could switch to Bruno or Grealish.

If you are chasing, and own 2 Pool and 2 city, who has the biggest upside as a punt out of Jota and Alvarez?!

My FT will be Ings to either of them!

Back in from a night out. Finally a few Bruno points, and Rashford helped against a rival who sold 🙂

Soooo close to Schar/Tripper points at both ends too, but will take another green!

    Friends, bottomed. Please:

    Steele*
    TAA*, Trippier, Gabriel
    Salah*, Grealish*, Rashford*, Mitoma*, Ødegaard
    Haaland*, Isak

    Raya, Watkins, Burn, Mee

So, already done Chilwell to TAA. Deciding on the following:
    A. No hit
    B. Gabriel/Mee to Stones/Shaw/Estupiñán (- 4)
    C. Øde to March, Watkins to Jota (- 8, and bench Isak)
    D. Mee to Dalot, Watkins to Jota (- 8, bench Gabriel and Isak)

    Also: TC Haaland, surely?

    Currently on;
    Steele²
    Estupinan², Burn, Henry
    Salah², Rashford², Grealish², Mitoma²
    Haaland(c)², Kane, Watkins

    Kepa, Andreas², White, Young

Originally I was going to do Henry & Young > Stones & Shaw (-4).

Have 1FT & 2.4ITB (I already did Odegaard > Rashford as soon as full time came. Never wanted to lose him but injury meant needs/must). Any alternative options I'm open to listening too. Willing to do a maximum of a -8.

    Which option:

    A) Mee to TAA for free

    B)Kane and Saka to Jota/Isak & Salah for -4

    C) Both for -8

      B for sure

Potentially C, depending on who you would be benching to play TAA

I would be benching Tripper, which is hard against Southampton at home.

Either of these worth a -4?

    A) Bruno to Salah
    B) Henry to TAA (bench Trippier)
