Continuing our Scout Notes from Sunday’s Gameweek 37 matches, we look back on Everton 2-0 Southampton.

EVERTON WIN ON GOODISON FAREWELL

Everton bid farewell to Goodison Park on Sunday with a comfortable 2-0 win over Southampton.

Iliman Ndiaye’s (£5.2m) first-half double put the hosts ahead, and they cruised through the rest of the match, in a fitting end to their time at the iconic stadium.

It really should have been more, too.

Beto (£4.9m) missed two Opta-defined ‘big chances’ and had two goals ruled out for offside in the first half alone.

Meanwhile, Dwight McNeil (£5.1m) was deployed as an inverted winger down the right and looked lively, claiming the assist for Ndiaye’s second before he was withdrawn just after the hour mark.

As for Ndiaye, he has been one of the Toffees’ top performers this season and is now on nine league goals, the most of any Everton player.

Six have arrived under David Moyes, with his minutes per goal average since his appointment (140.7) very decent.

Above: Forwards sorted by minutes per goal from David Moyes’ appointment in Gameweek 21 onwards (minimum 500 mins)

Creating chances at will, Everton also restricted Southampton to just six shots.

“The win and clean sheet was really important.” – David Moyes

BRANTHWAITE + COLEMAN INJURY LATEST

David Moyes made four changes to his Everton starting XI, with captain Seamus Coleman (£4.3m) making his first start since Boxing Day.

The Everton captain only lasted 18 minutes, however, as he was forced off with a thigh injury.

“He’s really disappointed. He felt his thigh in the first half. He has been a great servant and he certainly deserved to start today.” – David Moyes on Seamus Coleman

Jarrad Branthwaite (£4.9m) is newly flagged, too, after pulling up with a hamstring injury in the second half.

It could potentially leave Moyes with just two fit centre-halves for the trip to St James’ Park in Gameweek 38: Jake O’Brien (£4.5m) and Michael Keane (£3.8m).

Coleman’s replacement, Ashley Young (£4.2m), did at least impress upon his introduction, instantly becoming an outlet for his team down the right flank, with two chances created.

SOUTHAMPTON POOR

After at least showing some fight against Manchester City last week, Southampton looked down and out on Merseyside.

Slow, directionless passing was the name of the game, with very little urgency to their play.

Indeed, the Saints failed to have a single shot in the first half, which even by their standards is poor.

Further issues are building for Gameweek 38, too.

Simon Rusk lost Jan Bednarek (£4.0m) to injury on Saturday, and also saw Taylor Harwood-Bellis (£3.9m) pick up a knock at Goodison Park.

“I’ve not caught up with him yet, so we’re hoping it’s not too serious, but obviously it looked like it was a sore one for him so we just have to wait and see.” – Simon Rusk on Taylor Harwood-Bellis

Started Areola and Saliba. Benched Raya and Kiwior and Milenkovic. Even at this late stage in the season, FPL still finds the motivation to repeatedly kick me in the knackers.

Yep... I bought in Saka, Palmer and Vardy for a -8. At least one returned. Now praying Salah and Cunha do diddly..

A -8 with just 2 gameweeks to go is never advisable. Not enough time to make back the hit.

Harvey Barnes captain last game of the season anyone?

    - Newcastle need to secure CL
-Everton on the beach; had their Goodison farewell
    - CB injuries for Everton
    - Barnes has propensity to haul

They played one of the best defences in the league away from home. They are a different beast at home, and Isak could be back for the final day.

      Personally, would say absolutely not.

Gordon is back in the side now, which means Barnes doesn't play down the left in his preferred position. When played down the right, Barnes isn't effective at all.

For the game v Everton, I'd expect Newcastle to revert back to 4-3-3, which would mean one of Murphy, Barnes or Gordon missing out. Wouldn't be surprised to see Barnes being the one dropped to the bench.

Charlie Austin scored the winning goal recently for my local team AFC Totton in the Southern League Prem South play-off semi-final in an epic 4-3 extra time thriller recently. We managed to beat Gloucester in the final to win 1-0 and go up to the National South. Drinks in the bar afterwards with all the players! He does a lot of coaching now as well as playing.
Met loads of Saints players over the years too having been in the motor trade in the area.

Nørgaard delivers a BEAUTIFUL header assist — not counted! The elites don’t want Brentford getting credit. If it was Man City, they'd give him 2 assists! Rigged system!

Opta don't count assists for rebounds after a goalkeeper save. It's classified as a fantasy assist though for fpl purposes.

How is everyone doing then? Im on 46 with Henderson, Munoz, Gvardiol, Salah and Sarr to play. Raya and Milenkovic points on the bench could yet come in handy if Glasner decides to give his usual starters the night off after the FA Cup win.

Amazing. I'm provisionally 8.2k but feel like Im treading water and just holding onto top 10k. Really want to finally get another top 10k finish which would be my 7th. Ive had only 1 in the last 7 seasons. Top 10k is so hard now. Its gonna be a really tricky decision next week as to whether to go template and just try amd hold or do I go punty with my final transfer and captain choice.

I've never had one, this would be my first in 8 years of active playing 😀 so congrats for consistent stream of good ranks!
I dont think there is "template" captain for next week, just so many options, I think it will ultimately be between Bowen vs ips or one of Bournemouth boys vs Leicester.
Just not feeling Salah vs CRY. Isak "would" be an option vs Eve but he may not play

Im not particularly feeling Salah either but the decision will largely depend on what my rank is going into next week and getting an idea via various polls and general discussion which player will be the most captained. If its looking like Salah and Im still holding onto top 10k then I think I will have to captain him as well to protect against variance and just hope the rest of my team can do enough to hold my position. There are so many dynamics at play depending on what your rank goals are and mini league battles.

Yeah, I agree. I am fairly safe in my mini league lead (65pts) but dont have Saka, and will have to survive without him, presuming rival will captain him.
But I have learned the hard way last week that you should really play your own game, instead of catching rival, which often turns out to be bad

Yes absolutely you should play your own game during the season. Trying to block off, cover or guard against other players does have to become a consideration though going into the last couple of gameweeks. You will be fine with a 65pt lead. No way that will be over turned. I have 61 and 102pt leads in my 2 mini leagues.

I don't care if I finish 3k or 9.9k. I just want that 4 figure finish so have to strategise accordingly.

Yeah, I am willing Munoz to be given the night off so I get Konsa's points off the bench (decided against him as I already had Martinez in goal and I try to avoid doubling up on defence).

Currently on 44 with Murphy to come on for Isak for a further 2 points, plus Gvardiol, Salah, KdB and Munoz to go. Just clinging on to top 5k (4,882). Might have some surgery to do on the final day with Isak and Saliba flagged and Vardy not playing (but as a Leicester fan, it was worth it to bring him in and captain him for his final game!)

Playing Konsa over Livra has saved me and put me top of my main league. I'm around 150k overall and would be much higher if I didn't take a 44 point hit when I failed to apply my 1st wildcard! It gave me the focus and determination to finish as high as possible though.

Unless Sels keeps Chelsea at bay.

Then is it half a golden glove each if Southampton don't score?

With 1FT would you get him instead of Areola (ips), or prioritise getting a Bournemouth outfielder?

Not sure Areola starts the last game of the season. Flappy is leaving the club after 7 seasons, he may start over Areola.

If you have a playing GK, I would use the FT on Bournemouth attacker

            Not ideal.

Henderson has conceded in 25/36 league games this season. He is averaging 2.72 saves per match. Maybe hope he gets 1-2 save points

Obviously this depends a little bit on how Man City do on Tuesday, but assuming they get at least a point which would put them back up to 3rd, a draw is unlikely to be much help in the Forest-Chelsea game on the final day to either of their hopes for top 5. Will be interesting to see how they both approach that game, suspicion is they'll both try and nick a 1-0 win but it could really open up at both ends in the last 10-15 mins if its still 0-0.

How much do you think Saka's recent dry spell (0 G/A in last 7) will play into his and Arteta's thinking for GW38?

Nothing much to really play for on the final day as 70+ points behind in main ML but 60 ahead in the other so both feel done.

Thinking of Asensio, Salibe & Isak > Saka, Calafiori & Evanilson for a -4 leaving the below team:

    Ederson
    Calafiori / Burn / Gvardiol
    Gordon / Saka / Gibbs-White / Mbuemo
    Evanilson / Haaland / Watkins

    Martinz / Sarr / Munoz / O'Brien

Obviously no transfers are being made until Sunday 2:20pm earliest but here's my team (1 FT):

    Raya
    Gvardiol Kiwior Trippier*
    Salah KDB Mbeumo Rogers
    Watkins Isak* Wissa
    Martinez // Sarr Munoz Bradley

    - If Trippier out will start Munoz
    - May even start Munoz over Gvardiol if so(?)

What do you reckon is the best use of the 1 FT?

    A) Sarr > Semenyo
    B) KDB > Bowen
    C) Isak > Evanilson

(I can't do Sarr > Bowen for free.)

    There's a -4 option too:
    D) KDB/Isak > Bowen/Evanilson

    My current thinking is:
    - If KDB & Isak out: Option D [-4]
    - If KDB out & Isak starts: Option B
    - If KDB starts & Isak out: Option C

    Thoughts & feelings?

I would go B, not really feeling KDB vs Fulham and Bowen is legit captain material. A hit largely depends on your satisfaction with OR/ML standings

      Added Note:
      - My rival trails me by 3 points
      - They have Marmoush left
      - I have KDB & Sarr left
      - They will most likely play this next week, if Saliba out.

      Raya
      Gvardiol Kerkez Munoz
      Salah Bowen Mbeumo Rogers
      Marmoush Watkins Wissa
      Martinez // Sarr Saliba* Bradley

With I presume the 1 FT being Marmoush to Evanilson.

I essentially need KDB and Isak to do something...

6 could be good on paper but he might only get 30/60 mins after a long hammy injury.

If you haven’t got wissa then get him but if you are chasing he might be the right player to catch.

      A Bournemouth player if chasing

Can you imagine the carnage next season if we do get 10 teams in europe by the way? 6 Champions League teams playing Tue/Wed and then another 4 teams playing on Thursday. You'll have to have massive balls to go early on transfers

For now I'd assume Saliba doesn't start, but it's just a guess given the game means nothing so what's the point in risking an injury when they're about to get a rest anyway.

Per below message White may be a more interesting pick. Although he hasn't looked fully in it.

Else I'd go for someone like Kerkez.

But would prioritise an attacking transfer.

    GW38

Isak or Sarr > Evanilson or Semenyo/Kluivert?

    Defender bench headache……..

Do we think Isak is out now?

    Raya
    Gvardiol, Burn, Cucu
    Salah, KDB, Mbeumo, Bowen
    Wissa, Isak, Watkins

    Areola, Sarr, Milenkovic, RAN,

    1.8

Would probably start Burn given the main Everton CBs out. Set piece supremacy.

Would probably start Cucurella too. We'll want to keep it tight and he does offer some threat.

Gvardiol/Milenkovic/RAN trickier - but I'd probably set up like you have.

Wait for news on leaks. If Isak is out, Evanilson feels obvious.

I'm not sure if take a hit to replace KDB unless he didn't start. The only reason I'd consider it my end would be for Bowen, who you already have.

Whilst he's not reliable, the statements from Howe suggest the issue was not too significant.
Tbh this feels like when he was rested against Liverpool with a 'niggle' before the Carabao cup final. Newcastle just need to beat Everton so no need to risk him in the tougher away fixture when they can have a rested Isak at home.

            • 9 Years

Surely Isak has an ongoing issue, wouldn't call it not significant, and Howe lies all the time

He said Isak felt 'stiffness' on Saturday and that 'I don’t think it’s something that needs mending...it is definitely not a surgery issue...'

Can't know for certain but it certainly seems he's in with a chance to play Everton, maybe he will shed some more light in the next presser. With it being the last game of the season and Newcastle probably needing to win I'd think he would be happier to risk him.

Evanilson is available based on the team news from today's presser. Evanilson wasn't spotted in last week's training photos.

On team news for tomorrow, Iraola says the ones that missed Villa will be out - plus Alex Scott after his jaw surgery. He says they will need some young players on the bench.
