The Weekend Team News

Christian Benteke is ruled out for at least six months with an Achilles injury. Aaron Ramsey is back for Arsenal. Moussa Sissoko adds to Newcastle’s injury problems. Marouane Chamakh returns for Crystal Palace. Scott Parker is available for Fulham, but Kostas Mitroglou will miss out. Mark Hughes rules Robert Huth out for the rest of the season, whilst Victor Anichebe is back for the Baggies:

Aston Villa were rocked yesterday after it was confirmed that Christian Benteke would be ruled out for at least six months, having ruptured an Achilles tendon in training. Elsewhere Gabby Agbonlahor will be assessed after missing training during the week with a sickness bug. Karim El Ahmadi is also struggling with the thigh strain that ruled him out of the United game last week, and is doubtful to face Fulham, though Nathan Baker will return to the squad after missing last Saturday’s Old Trafford loss with a foot injury.

Roberto Martinez doesn’t expect Phil Jagielka to be ready for Sunday’s home game against Arsenal, as the centre-half continues to struggle with a hamstring problem. The Toffees boss is a lot more optimistic on Ross Barkley, though – the youngster is still being assessed after picking up a calf problem last weekend but Martinez revealed he is ”very much positive” he will be available.

Newcastle’s injury woes have worsened with Alan Pardew revealing that midfielder Moussa Sissoko may miss the next two to three weeks with a hamstring strain. Loic Remy has also been ruled out, contrary to last week’s suggestions that he would be fit to face Man United this weekend. Newcastle also remain without injured pair Mathieu Debuchy and Tim Krul for the visit of United.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed Aaron Ramsey is back in the Arsenal squad for Sunday’s Goodison showdown after finally recovering from a thigh injury. Nacho Monreal also returns for the Gunners, though Kieran Gibbs and Serge Gnabry are both doubtful. Laurent Koscielny (calf) remains sidelined, however, with Wenger commenting; ‘The earliest [he will be back] is next week, the latest is the week after.’ Jack Wilshere and Mesut Ozil also remain on the treatment table, though Abou Diaby has returned to training for the Gunners.

Tony Pulis has confirmed that Marouane Chamakh is in contention for Saturday’s crunch clash with Cardiff after missing the last four league games with a hamstring strain. “Chamakh has trained all week and he is ready to go”, revealed the Eagles boss.

Fulham have no fresh injury worries ahead of their visit to Villa Park at the weekend, with Felix Magath also confirming that Scott Parker has returned to training after recovering from injury. Kostas Mitroglou remains sidelined, whilst Fernando Amorebieta returns to the squad after serving a suspension. Darren Bent is ineligible to face his parent club.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes has confirmed the news that Robert Huth will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury. Meanwhile, Oussama Assaidi remains out with a knee problem, though Stoke will be boosted by Jon Walters’ return from suspension.

Pepe Mel has revealed that both Claudio Yacob and Billy Jones have returned to training and will be assessed ahead of the trip to Carrow Road. Victor Anichebe is set to be fit to face the Canaries having recovered from a hamstring injury. Chris Brunt, though, remains sidelined for the Baggies who will have Jonas Olsson available once again following suspension.

Finally, Mauricio Pochettino has suggested that midfielder Victor Wanyama could return from injury this weekend and will be assessed later today.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream as breaking news unfolds.

Captain choices for GW33 have me thinking.

    (1) Suarez is obviously the default pick.
Up against West Ham away, he returned a goal and 2 assists in the reverse fixture.
    - West Ham will be up for this, Allardyce thinks of himself as an underrated tactical genius and he's up against the flavour of the month in Brendan Rodgers so he'll want to try take advantage of Liverpool's weaknesses in the air by showing them Andy Carroll's true potential.

My prediction = WHU 1 - 3 LIV, goal and assist for Suarez.

    (2) Hazard
Stoke at home, he returned just 2 points in a 2-3 away win in the reverse fixture.
    - Stoke are one of the form teams in the PL at the moment, having lost just once in 9 games, and that was a 1-0 at the Etihad. Chelsea are supposedly out of form but they're still playing well at home, conceding just 2 goals and scoring 20 in their last 8 home league games.
Hazard, one could argue though, hasn't done much in recent weeks. Scored just 1 goal in the 4-0 v spurs and 1 goal in the 6-0 v arsenal. Over the last 11 games he also had a hattrick against a useless Newcastle and 2 assists at Fulham. Stoke aren't pushovers and I can see Hazard struggling, although the team will be relying on him more than anyone.
Another thing to consider is the Champions League, what will Mourinho's priorities be now?

My prediction = CHE 2 - 0 STO, assist for Hazard.

    (3) Silva / Yaya / Dzeko
Southampton at home, reverse was 1-1 with both blanking.
    - City are a different beast at the Etihad and with Southampton now starting to take it easy at the back, focusing more on attack, this could be an entertaining game. We all know about Yaya at this stage whereas Silva is a nice new addition to the in form big hitters, thanks to some impressive recent returns.. Dzeko has been leading the line well for City and in Aguero's absence he could profit once again. He'll want to prove that he is worthy of minutes even when Kun returns so this could be a big match for the Bosnian. He has 3 goals and an assist in his last 3.
This is a tough match to call as Southampton have been impressive of late recently but this will be their biggest test. They lost 3-0 at home to Liverpool remember so City will fancy their chances.

My prediction = MCI 3 - 1 SOU, goal for yaya, assist for silva, brace from dzeko.
(4-1 if aguero comes off the bench and looks interested)

    (4) Rooney
Away to Newcastle, didn't play in a 0-1 loss at home.
    - If I owned Rooney, I'd captain him. Newcastle are not only on the beach, but they may as well have the cocktails out there with them, they look so uninterested. United will want revenge for an embarrassing loss at home earlier in the season, and United are playing much better away from home this year.

My prediction = MUN 3 - 0 NEW, two goals and 3 baps for Rooney.

    How about some differentials?

    (5) Bony - away to Hull, Swansea have scored 16 goals in 8 games and are playing good attacking football under Monk. Hull are a decent side defensively though so what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? Something's gotta give, and on recent form I expect Swansea to overcome the sturdy Hull defence.
    Prediction = 2-3... Brace + 3 baps for Bony.

    (6) Snodgrass - home vs West Brom, Snodgrass is in form and seems to be his team's main attacking outlet, having scored or assisted 6 of Norwich's last 9 goals. West Brom will concede, they've kept just 1 clean sheet since GW11 and that was against a toothless Newcastle.
    Prediction = 2-2... Goal + assist + 2 baps for Snodgrass.

    Also for consideration:

    (7) Adebayor - Depends on his fitness but home vs Sunderland looks enticing. If he plays, he could be a great differential.
    (8) Eriksen - in form and against Sunderland.
    (9) Carroll - in form and has point to prove vs Liverpool.
    (10) Jelavic - Swansea can't defend, he's scored or assisted 5 of his team's last 11.

It's a risk v reward thing really. It's a big risk captaining someone other than Suarez, but if you're willing to take that risk then you might just get lucky.

With Tekkers out, I think Suarez' 60%+ in the captaincy poll reflects the reality quite well. Rooney is a good shout for those that own him.

You don't expect him to do that well or you expect him to get a goal and assist (and presumably 3 bonus)? Do you really give Suarez a points expectancy of 12? No player has ever had a points expectancy that high in any fixture.

Yeah I expect him to get around 10 points roughly, somewhere between 7 and 14 if I had to guess. That's just my prediction..

I also think that Bony has a chance to get about 10-15 points.

He'll start definitely, United are just building up some momentum, Moyes is smart enough to know that Rooney needs to play to maintain form.

He might be taken off early, but only if United are comfortably ahead, which will probably be thanks to a brace from Wayne. I'd (C) if I were you..

Thanks 🙂 Suarez is a good choice this week, but he's not an obvious choice, I don't expect him to go mental at Upton Park (he might do, but I'd bet against it).

Having said that, none of the others are enticing me that much. I'm considering Bony myself as the only alternative to Suarez, but might just end up on Luis Suaz.

Rooney is the best captain this week imo.

True, but what if he outscores Suarez? That could be a nice little boost up the ranks, plus you'll get Suarez's points too so its not THAT risky.

Which one do you think has more of a chance of scoring a hattrick this week?

Suarez. I'd be expecting an early exit for Rooney if it all goes to plan for United with one eye on Munich and Hernadez getting a 30 min run out.

Sturridge has been outscored by Suarez in most recent weeks, if you want to captain a Liverpool striker I'd captain Suarez.

However, if you think Upton Park against tall strong West Ham players will suit Sturridge better, go for it 😀 he's as good a pick as some of the others I've mentioned and I'd captain Sturridge ahead of Hazard..

I know it goes against logic but I think I'm going to do Sturridge & Gnabry out for Dzeko & Eriksen for -4.
It means I can bench Mirallas this gw but keep him for double when Mata doesn't play.
It's a gamble on Sturridge blanking but I have a feeling Dzeko & Eriksen will do well and pay it back nicely.
Not long to go now so balsy moves are needed to make progress.

Dzeko costs 6.9, not that big of a gamble, he's scored 3 and got an assist in his last 3, he'll play vs Southampton and at least 1 game in the DGW where City have 2 great fixtures.

But Dzeko points will be affected with the return of Aguero, just saying...
We all know that Dzeko is capable of wasting many chances in front of goal and Southampton still looks fine at the back, I don't see them conceding that many goals

Southampton have conceded 9 goals in their last 6 games, I see City putting a few past them.
True, Aguero will take points off Dzeko, but not yet I don't think.. Aguero won't come back at 100% effectiveness.

You might be right though! Tis all about opinions 🙂

Arsenal is still a tough game. I think % wise he could very well blank. True that Aguero could return soon, so what? I still expect Dzeko to start the next 3 games. After that I don't care, I would likely bring someone else in

Arsenal's defense has been poor without Kosc. I expect this game to be high scoring because both teams need to win. Mirallas could return to the starting 11 after two rest on the bench...

my interjection on the rooney rested debate...

if rooney is rested it is a white flag to the rest of the league - he will be signalling he is giving up on european football this year (champ league at least)

though it is unlikely this is not the message united fans wont to get - not just this rooney rested would give newcastle so much belief.

I thought Anelka was fairly intelligent but this whole episode is really shocking as he is way out of order. His mate mbala mbala is a really vile far-right character and blatantly racist/anti semitic. You can't away with making jokes about wishing french jewish guys were killed in gas chambers. There is no way showing support for him is anything but unacceptable. Lost any respect for Anelka after this, the guy has no credibility anymore.

Other way around. Selling Sturridge and Sterling over the next weeks, as i will celebrate every goal they score anyway. Getting in City players is good for FPL, and if they fail i couldnt care less, if they score, i will get the small consolation of FPL points. And still, Liverpool win if they win all their games 😉

bit of a difference between anti-semitism and anti-zionism......although the Zionists would like you to believe that there is no difference.

It's not about who controls the media, it's part of a wider societal over-sensitivity towards religious criticism, and of course it is all twisted to sell papers better. I don't know anything about the quenelle or the French comedian though, but I certainly agree that there should be a greater distinction between zionists and Jews.

in my mind it is good to go against discriminatory policies which only enforce the desires and beliefs of one group at the expense of another, maybe not at a football match though...lol

Playing in a mini league where each player can only be owned by one manager

In leagues like that though you need to be ahead of the curve. If MOM waits until Rambo actually does something real then he will miss out on getting Rambo since others with snag him. Do a preemptive strike now and get him if you think that Nolan won't do much the rest of the way (or drop someone else) but get players like that earlier than your opponents.

Not for sure. He's been spotted in full training with the team yesterday and many expect him to play a part against Southampton. But we won't know anything until at least Pellegrini's press conference, and maybe not until the final whistle of the game itself.

Would you Captain Rooney or Suarez if you owned them both?

I think Rooney has better chances to score at newcastle but I don't trust Moyes, particularly inbetween CL games. There is a risk Rooney plays under 60 minutes imo.

                Suarez

I think Rooney could be benched.

Partly for rest and partly to save him from injury.

They can still play Mata in the 10 and Hernandez up front, so that's still good enough to beat a poor Newcastle.

As I said above I think just having Rooney is already a differential in itself. Captaining him is too risky now since the majority of serious players will go for Suarez
