Fixtures

Season Shapers – Gameweek 6 – Sunderland 1 Liverpool 3

We introduce a new end-of-season article idea this morning. Focussing on specific fixtures that had a long-lasting effect on our Fantasy campaigns, we look at some pivotal moments of 2013/14 that changed the landscape as we previously knew it:

The Scenario

The return of Luis Suarez. After sitting out the first five fixtures due to suspension, the Uruguayan was immediately re-installed to the Liverpool starting line-up as Brendan Rodgers’ side looked to bounce back from a 1-0 home defeat to Southampton in the previous match. Indeed, the Merseysiders had been struggling for goals and had found the next just five times in the opening five Gameweeks of the season, netting more than once on a single occasion.

Starting the campaign at 11.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Suarez had dipped to 10.9 by the time he was available, whilst team-mate Daniel Sturridge had climbed from 9.0 to 9.4 after scoring in four of the Reds’ five matches. Steven Gerrard, on the other hand, had failed to produce any attacking returns whatsoever and was struggling to justify his premium price tag, after delivering 10 goals and 12 assists in the Merseysiders’ first year under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers.

The Events

Having mainly utilised a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Sturridge fielded as a lone striker, Rodgers wasted no time in showing he would tinker with his tactics, switching to a 3-4-1-2 in order to unleash the “SAS” combination as Liverpool made their way to Sunderland.

The Black Cats immediately felt the full impact as Suarez’ return to action served up two goals and the maximum bonus points in a 3-1 win on Wearside – bringing his owners a 13-point haul. Sturridge, however, was not to be outdone and played a part in all three of his side’s strikes, with a goal, two assists and a couple of bonus points harvesting 14 points. Gerrard was also in the points, with an assist belatedly kick-starting his campaign as the Merseysiders began to find their attacking form.

The Impact

Suarez’ return proved the catalyst for Liverpool to wreak havoc on top-flight defences the length and breadth of the country over the remainder of the season. The Sunderland result illustrated how canny a tactic picking up both the Reds’ frontmen would ultimately prove to be.

Significant investment arrived immediately for both Suarez and Sturridge, and by the time the following weekend’s home encounter with Palace arrived, the two forwards were subject to 0.3 price rises. The Uruguayan hit the ground running, serving up 10+ hauls in three of his first four matches and underlining what an outstanding captaincy contender he would prove to be, whilst Sturridge found the net in each of his first four games alongside Suarez, taking his tally to eight goals in the first nine Gameweeks.

With the front two running riot, Gerrard thrived from a deep-lying role – Suarez’s re-introduction to the top-flight saw the Liverpool skipper embark on a run which brought attacking returns in nine of his first 10 starts alongside the South American, as he set about re-establishing himself as a bone fide midfield heavy-hitter.

Having now delivered 293, 194 and 189 points apiece, Suarez, Gerrard and Sturridge have, for many, dispelled the idea of picking certain players for team “coverage” this term and shown that sometimes it’s a more than valid tactic to place all your Fantasy eggs in the one basket if that basket is hell-bent on attack, attack, attack regardless of the consequences.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What should be the theme of next season's Scoutcast team?

To recap for our Scoutcast Mark and Granville share management of a team with restrictions. This season's has been no players from the 2012/13 top four Premier League clubs.

Be great to hear your views, with a range of options such as ownership restrictions.

That is a really good idea.....means its a bit like the Sky game and you pick players more on their ability to stay fit.

Or alternatively, they have to take a hit every week. It'll be more interesting and be a reminder as to how that strategy can be high risk.

Cap the price of player they can buy.

      For example

      GKs under 5.0
      Defs under 5.0
      Mids under 9.0
      Fwds under 10.0

This will help unearth gems and force them to take punts on the lesser players from the big teams.

Only players in the promoted teams or players newly tranfered or loaned. With Utd,Chelsea, City,Arsenal and Liverpool all looking at getting new names over the whole pitch you could get a pretty nice squad.

Idea for ScoutCast Team next year:

After agreeing on an initial gw1 best effort team, Mark and Granville (and Jonty imo) each presents their preferred next move for the scoutcast team, free or including hits or use of wildcard or whatever they think is best for the team, and leave the listeners to vote for the best alternative during Friday.
In that way, it will still be the Scoutcast team, cos it will always be one of Marks or Granvilles or Jontys preferred moves that will be done, but at the same time it will involve and invite the listeners/readers to affect the decision.
I can see some good discussions and arguments on the different alternatives to convince us why and what is the best move for the team this week.

And maybe, just maybe, the Scoutcast team could do really well for a change, instead of giving it all kinds of handicaps and leaving it in deadmans land from early on. Hard to keep up interest in a poor team.

      Just an idea 🙂

Low ownership idea is really appealing. So each player has to be less than 5% owned as suggested earlier. Transfers then need to focus on moving out players who breach this 5%.

I also like the "a hit every week" suggestion as it forces people to chase value and make those tough decisions which a lot of us (Mark included) didnt take when we should have done.

I think the idea does allow you to keep players once they pass the 5% mark (they just have to be bought at under 5%). It would be too difficult to manage otherwise I think.

Drop it. It's non-inclusive and neither person was really committed to its success. If you must do it then let the public vote on a team and transfers so it's inclusive. Although I predict participation and interest may fade over the season.

You've also lost sight of the original reason for fantasy islands risks and captain picks. They were originally advice and suggestions for players but it morphed into a non-inclusive competition between the two of you of them with nothing at stake.

Bring back the full Jonty instead. Although it only focused on 1 team the discussion of choices and strategies were relevant to all. The key to its success was the excellent level of research and preparation that Jonty put in to, particularly compared to the above.

I think it would be worth making it relevant to FPL in some way, perhaps testing a theory. For example, they have to take a hit every week, but never more than a -4 (last part optional).

This would allow them to modify the team each week to suit the strongest fixtures and get in the hottest form players. I think that if played well the team could easily be very competitive.

How bout an FFS Community Team. Basically the FFS community decides on who's in the starting team and then what transfers happen each week. Also the community decides the bench order and (c) and (vc). Would require a lot of polls each week but i reckon it could work.

Maybe something go do with shirt numbers. Only odd or even numbers.

        Only southern or northern teams.

Or maybe you do a 'rivals' one, where you can only have players from either Liverpool or Everton, United or City, West Brom or Villa, Newcastle or Sunderland etc...

Mark and Granville could run a pair of competing themed teams, e.g. Reds v Blues, East v West, A-M v N-Z, Strong Bench (Minimum Value 20.0m) v Weak Bench (Maximum Value 16.5m) or Five Defenders Always (5-2-3, 5-3-2 or 5-4-1) v Five Midfielders Always (3-5-2 or 4-5-1).

But the idea of No Hits v Compulsory Hits is probably the best one so far.

Any of these ideas ought to give plenty of scope for miffs!

Scoutcast can choose any player but once transferred out can never be brought back in. At the start this would be easy, but as the season progresses, especially with double gameweeks, it would get interesting.

I had two ideas on this (apologies if these have already been mentioned).

        1. Combine two podcast features - absorb Professor's 'Rate My Team' feature into the ScoutCast team. So they have to transfer in only players recommended for that gameweek by the RMT computer.

        2. Make it a 'follow the masses' team where they are only allowed to transfer the highest ranked 'transferred in this gameweek' Goalkeeper/Defender/Midfielder/Forward from FPL. This would effectively be a bandwagon team, but that proved quite a successful tactic this year!

I also like the idea where the community decides the next transfer target(s) from a poll. I think there'd have to be a poll for number of hits, then possible players.

Fellas can you shed some light on the situation here. Here is where I'm at:
      - My ML is a head to head
      - The matches are still displaying last week's (37) scores and it still shows that it is semi-final
      - Also I have drawn with my rival this week (93 a piece)

      2 questions:
      1. When will the Final matchups will be shows
      2. What happens if 2 teams drew in the semis?

With a 30pt lead what would your tactics be for the final day? Would you spend a few of those points getting rid of playera who wont or might not play.

Me and my rival both have aguero and rooney who may be out, i also worry aboit ramsey and sagna. Do i spend the points or just try to ensure i get 11 starters and let my lead do the work?

Team looks good but its got to be gamble time. Aguero out for sturridge or dzeko. Maybe mata to hazard.

Would an 8 point hit of Aguero, Mata & Wickham to Sturridge, Dzeko and Hazard be worth it? This would still leave me 1.4 ITB.

I think they'll continue playing as they have. As attacking as they usually are in their home games. Deep down, they probably know title is gone. Henderson is back which should help & wanting to give fans a good send-off for their support e.t.c.

Morning all. Still can't believe I dropped from 900's to 1344 after a DGW. Rough.

            Team atm for final week:

            Mann

            Ward Ivan Coleman

            YaYa Nasri Ramsey Mata

            Aguero Rooney Suarez

            // Punch / Stones / Chester

            Suarez Wickham Kun
            (boruc, ramsey, evra, kolarov)

            Rival
            Mannone
            Coleman Delaney Baker/Rosseinor
            Yaya Gerrard Silva Mata
            Suarez Dzeko Giroud
            (Gazzinga Caulker Ki)

I have a 5 point lead in cash league but no yaya or dzeko, can anyone advise best way to play this out, was thinking kun + Mata/ramsey > Yaya + Sturridge, other though is to do Kun + Nasri > yaya and dzeko to cancel him out. Thoughts??

            Hi there,

I have 3 ML rivals who have clawed back to 6, 11 & 17 points from around 46 last week.

As far as I can see the main differentials they have are Dzeko (x2), Ade, Hazard, Erikson, Mert & Kompany.

            Would you do this:

            Rooney > Sturridge
            Aguero > Dzeko
Januzaj > Erikson or Hazard (-4)

Maybe the -4 for Erikson or Hazard is a push too far, but I'm not sure on Mata & Janu starting, plus SOT away is a tough game.

              lukaku I reckon

hull will rest up for the fa cup final and have been flat recently

Southampton have kept three consecutive clean sheets...united are shite

I too would go Lukaku , tho I'm expecting Mata behind Rvp and I feel that will be uniteds main men from next season on , might get a taste of what's ahead V Soton.
