Fixtures

Season Shapers – Gameweek 6 – Sunderland 1 Liverpool 3

We introduce a new end-of-season article idea this morning. Focussing on specific fixtures that had a long-lasting effect on our Fantasy campaigns, we look at some pivotal moments of 2013/14 that changed the landscape as we previously knew it:

The Scenario

The return of Luis Suarez. After sitting out the first five fixtures due to suspension, the Uruguayan was immediately re-installed to the Liverpool starting line-up as Brendan Rodgers’ side looked to bounce back from a 1-0 home defeat to Southampton in the previous match. Indeed, the Merseysiders had been struggling for goals and had found the next just five times in the opening five Gameweeks of the season, netting more than once on a single occasion.

Starting the campaign at 11.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Suarez had dipped to 10.9 by the time he was available, whilst team-mate Daniel Sturridge had climbed from 9.0 to 9.4 after scoring in four of the Reds’ five matches. Steven Gerrard, on the other hand, had failed to produce any attacking returns whatsoever and was struggling to justify his premium price tag, after delivering 10 goals and 12 assists in the Merseysiders’ first year under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers.

The Events

Having mainly utilised a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Sturridge fielded as a lone striker, Rodgers wasted no time in showing he would tinker with his tactics, switching to a 3-4-1-2 in order to unleash the “SAS” combination as Liverpool made their way to Sunderland.

The Black Cats immediately felt the full impact as Suarez’ return to action served up two goals and the maximum bonus points in a 3-1 win on Wearside – bringing his owners a 13-point haul. Sturridge, however, was not to be outdone and played a part in all three of his side’s strikes, with a goal, two assists and a couple of bonus points harvesting 14 points. Gerrard was also in the points, with an assist belatedly kick-starting his campaign as the Merseysiders began to find their attacking form.

The Impact

Suarez’ return proved the catalyst for Liverpool to wreak havoc on top-flight defences the length and breadth of the country over the remainder of the season. The Sunderland result illustrated how canny a tactic picking up both the Reds’ frontmen would ultimately prove to be.

Significant investment arrived immediately for both Suarez and Sturridge, and by the time the following weekend’s home encounter with Palace arrived, the two forwards were subject to 0.3 price rises. The Uruguayan hit the ground running, serving up 10+ hauls in three of his first four matches and underlining what an outstanding captaincy contender he would prove to be, whilst Sturridge found the net in each of his first four games alongside Suarez, taking his tally to eight goals in the first nine Gameweeks.

With the front two running riot, Gerrard thrived from a deep-lying role – Suarez’s re-introduction to the top-flight saw the Liverpool skipper embark on a run which brought attacking returns in nine of his first 10 starts alongside the South American, as he set about re-establishing himself as a bone fide midfield heavy-hitter.

Having now delivered 293, 194 and 189 points apiece, Suarez, Gerrard and Sturridge have, for many, dispelled the idea of picking certain players for team “coverage” this term and shown that sometimes it’s a more than valid tactic to place all your Fantasy eggs in the one basket if that basket is hell-bent on attack, attack, attack regardless of the consequences.

Having Azpi, Ivan and Kosc with Chester and Parr being useless on the bench.
    Kosc to Baines worth a -4 ?

No def is worth a hit on final GW. I painfully found that out a couple seasons ago when I took a hit for ivanovic and he scored 2pts. CSs are a rarity.

An article on why Newcastle should sign Rémy. But it also makes a point for us FPL managers: Newcastle is much better now that Rémy is back.

    http://www.whoscored.com/Articles/n_fk_npkg0-nvr3ne94nqw/Show/Player-Focus-Form-Without-Remy-Shows-Why-Newcastle-Must-Sign-Him

Note that they also defend much better when he's on.

March 1st Newcastle routed Hull 4-1. Then Rémy got injured. They went on to lose 5 out of 6 matches he was away with goal difference 1-13, and won the second match that he started after that stint.

Yes, this victory was against Cardiff, who are not quite Liverpool but this pattern goes longer. Before Hull they won Villa, but before that they had a 4 match non-scoring streak during which they lost 3 games. Those three games coincided with suspension that Rémy served after picking a red card in the first match of that series. That was the Norwich match in which he hit the post twice. Before it, they had won West Ham away.

They will most probably lose at Liverpool, but they will probably not be as poor as they have been recently. Newcastle's relegation form coincides with Rémy's absence, with him, they have done reasonably well.

      Copied from below:

Attackers often affect the team defence in many ways. In Newcastle's case:

1.17 goals conceded per match with Rémy
2.23 goals conceded per match without Rémy

That's over 1 goal/match difference. Newcastle has conceded more than 2 goals in 10 matches this season. Only 3 of those are in 26 matches that Rémy has featured in. So, 7 of the times when they've conceded 3 or more are in 11 matches that Rémy has not played in.

Sorry, in 4 matches that Rémy has played. So, let me clarify this:

        Newcastle has conceded 3+ goals...

...in 4/26 matches with Rémy (15%)
...in 7/11 matches without Rémy (64%)

        Quite a difference.

I don't think either Rooney or Aguero will play, so make those two your priorities as that's where you'll get points back. Any other week giroud would have been a decent shout but he might be rested on sun or at least taken off early with the FA Cup final.

It's boring and standard but I'd be looking at either dzeko or sturridge or maybe even lukaku/adebayor if you fancy more of a punt. Dzeko/Sturridge def the safe bets though, presuming your other striker is suarez.

In second place chasing an 8 point lead, front 7 as follows...

    ME

    Nasri Yaya Eriksen Ramsey

    Suarez Kun Rooney

    LEADER

    Mata AJ Yaya Ramsey

    Suraez Kun Rooney

I'm confident he will swap Ronney out for Sturridge and take no additional hits.

If poyet rests AJ and doubts over Mata & Ramsey I'm thinking I have the edge in midfeild. I'm therefore thinking Rooney > Sturridge & Kun to Dzeko for -4 if Kun confirmed out.

Sound sensible or should I be looking at Ade / Lukaku instead of Dezko to be a bit more punty ?

He's gonna do the same if Kun is confirmed out, so you would rely on Nasri and Eriksen outscoring Mata and AJ by 7 or more. Which they can.

Defending a lead in one important league, chasing in another. Guy I'm chasing in the more important one has Sturridge.

Not sure whether to go for him or avoid him..

Yeah, AJ is the only player that hasn't contributed anything to this run we've been on. He's been really poor. Can understand why poyet wanted to keep a winning team, but with him making changes on sun, first one I would do is Giac for Johnson.

Now that Giggs has said Sunday is probably to quick for Rooney and Aguero is as always a doubt how many of you will go for Sturridge+Dzeko for Rooney and Kun? I myself have rooney and aguero and thinking about that switch. What other options would you recommend? 3rd striker is Suarez

I will do the same too, just waiting City's presser. Other options are Lukaku, Ade, Odemwingie...

That's the 'safe' plan that many will be doing, but if Aguero sounds like he could get gametime then I might just stick with the no hit version: Rooney > Studge

Is Sturridge essential if you have Suarez, he has looked a bit off the pace and not been fully fit.
