Any advice on who to replace Chambers and Aguero with, with this team?

    Chambers - Hutton - Wisdom
    Hazard - Sanchez - Yaya - Siggy
    Aguero - Costa

    Elliot - Naylor - Yun - Austin

Chambers leaving my team. Clichy or Azpi to replace him? Kolarov is a threat to Clichy and is Azpi's place under threat? He was subbed today.

I know he's not nailed nailed, but he's pretty nailed. I've got him in around this point of the last two seasons and he's been amazing for me from now until the end of the season. He's first choice above Kolarov, yes he'll probably lose minutes but not loads and as long as you've got backup he's probably worth it.

Sergio Aguero, mechanism of injury update

Receiving the ball on the edge of the area, Aguero gets tackled, falls, then immediately gets back up and attempts to retrieve the ball again, at this point, his mechanical positioning is awkward and to reach he has to abduct at the hip rather than flex (a sideways motion, rather than a forward one), he is abducted almost fully, and plants his foot at full stretch. In this extended position the external rotation at the hip now needed to bring him back to a forward facing position causes an excessive rotation at the knee, stressing the medial collateral ligament (MCL) of the knee. Indeed, Sergio goes down and instantly holds his knee over his MCL.

The mechanism of injury is a concern, as this type of rotatory force to the knee, if excessive can damage the MCL, the cruciate ligaments and the meniscus, it’s called the ‘unhappy triad’ or ‘blown knee.’ Having said that, with no other player or impediment involved I don’t think the force was excessive enough to cause damage to the cruciates, but it could have tweaked the meniscus? So at this stage, until scans or further news we can only speculate. Having said that, as a purely remote observation from the perspective of a physio, Sergio’s injury might not be as serious as first feared and if an injury has indeed occurred, the signs are good that he has suffered a grade 1 or grade1-2 sprain to the MCL, which would mean anything from 2-5 weeks on the treatment table. It’s obviously difficult to tell and further news will almost certainly shine a clearer light as, having viewed the footage, it’s not out of the question that he may have just tweaked or stretched a few fibres and just misses the one gameweek
    .
I’ll update again when there are more clues to go on

If it is just the MCL and the meniscus doesn't have a divot it could be very quick indeed given previous worries. MCL gets so much blood flow that it heals quite nicely without surgery even, often.

I'll just jump in Facer and say that very fast excessive rotation can absolutely do the ACL without external involvement. MCL would be quite likely had he taken a bad tackle. I may be wrong but his foot clips the ground as he goes to run doesn't it? That could have also stressed/torn the ligaments.

"There are several ways noncontact ACL injuries occur, including stopping quickly, cutting sharply, and landing and changing direction with both feet planted. Most commonly in court sports, such as basketball, a pop is felt. This pop also refers to the way the athlete lands with both feet planted and out of control and feels a pop. It usually signals that the ACL is torn completely." That sums it up nicely though we couldn't hear any pop...

I really hope it's just an MCL injury though.

Both times I tore my ACL - it was non-contact - pushing off hard and twisting at the same time.

Done it twice? Damn that's rough! Hope you recovered from them well!

Aye it is very common, my worry is after his initial fall he gets up so fast and is lunging for the ball again that he's gone and done an ACL tear. But I hope that isn't the case, certainly could be MCL instead.

Yes - I did thanks Somalion mate.
First time skinny doctor couldn't demo instability....so consultant confirmed a complete rupture during arthroscopy to check what was wrong a full 2 weeks later !
I was taking rugby very seriously then, so on advice just built up the muscles to protect the scar tissue.

Got away with it for a couple of seasons, then it blew again so had a patella tendon graft re-fix. Still got back to playing - and although only 3rd team rugby since - I've done another 17 years of rugby and 5-a-side footy.
Am going to watch MOTD to see what it looks like.

This reminds me of my second tear....other leg for me - and was pushing off to tackle someone who had cut inside. Really feel for guys whenever this stuff happens.

Jesus you were in the wars, glad to hear the fix at least solved it even if it cut down the level you were playing at. That second tear must have been awful so, really tough stuff!

                  Thanks mate.
Yeah - wasn't pleasant as I knew exactly what had happened 2nd time round - despite the club doctor saying it was just a 'sprain' !
To make it worse, my dad was reffing the match at the time..... I'd voluntarily dropped off the 1st team bench to get a full game for the 2nds and have the chance to be on the same pitch as him when he was visiting for the weekend. Not the luckiest decision 😯

Add in torn adductors (including a partial detachment), a few cracked ribs and a rubber nose from being punched once too often over the years...there's not many more to list 😀

yes it can, especially with the studs planted, which i outlined and this type of mechanism of injury, if excessive, would almost certainly involve the ACL, the medial meniscus (as it is also attched to the MCL) and the MCL (without being tackled) A tackle that stresses the MCL would have be be rotary or more likely valgus in terms of force direction.

As a very loose assessment, at this stage, I feel there is a good chance he got away ACL involvement...but it all depends on the instability of the knee with hands on assessments

        1. Somalion
          • 14 Years
          9 years, 5 months ago

Sorry missed that, I just meant that in terms of external involvement I'd nearly expect that to result in MCL over ACL (in a situation where a tackle has been taken).

I'm not sure if I saw correctly but I thought I saw them doing the anterior drawer tests etc. on him, my first thought was MCL as well I've just grown more concerned over the last couple of hours that it was ACL, he seems to have his feet planted and rotates strongly when getting up from the first challenge (if I remember correctly at least).

The one thing I was surprised with, though I have seen it before, is that they let him walk to the sideline and off the pitch. That would push me against thinking ACL, though it does happen occasionally.

And as you rightly say, he looks like he's holding the region over the MCL.

Yes, you saw correctly 🙂 sort of...although it wasn't an anterior drawer test, it was a test for the ACL, if you did an anterior drawer test on a player with a grade 2 or 2-3 there is a chance you could aggravate the injury further...its an adaptation of the drawer test...its a passive movement looking for a sulcus sign...support the lower leg distally and proximally and gently flex, looking for a posterior translation of the tibial plateau on the femoral condyles...a much better test to start with if ACL is suspected

Phew, glad I can recognise it (even sort of!). All a fairly new world to me. Very interesting, I'm definitely going to have to remember that for the future as well! I'm glad someone with a hell of a lot more experience than myself has said it was possibly an MCL or Meniscal tear, they were the first two things I said when it happened but all the recent twitter rumblings of 4-6 months out had me worried about ACL. Hopefully it isn't (though I reckon we won't see him for a few weeks at least).

spot on and a good insight, if you play sports or exercise regularly, you'll pick up injuries, which is by far the best way of learning about specific injuries , the signs and symptoms and types of pain and their treatment

That's exactly it, you learn the most from experience! A great example is even tonight, I've learned an entirely new test for ACL injuries I hadn't even been aware of, I much prefer experience and talking to someone in the know about these things, I find I learn much more 😀

him walking off might be a good sign....although again on my own experience - I could walk unaided with my knee part-flexed and braced tightly with co-contraction of hammies/quads - however it would really give way (+pain) if I relaxed a little and got to straightening it in my walking motion (Just that last bit of slight hyperextension).

*the poster admits to NO expertise other than own injuries ! 😉

See I have known people to walk away with them so absolutely you could be right there. My only thinking is if they determined it was possibly an ACL it'd be odd that they had him walk away...

                Absolutely. I hope you're right.
My first one was back in 1993....and it wasn't at a top flight football club either.
                They'll know what they're doing.....hopefully.

Oh lord, I cannot fathom how they can let people with those head hits play on. Thankfully it is getting more under control now but feckin hell, really highly dangerous. An ACL isn't going to kill you, a bad head injury might!

                    Indeed.
I worry about the way they assume the best rather than the worst.
If it was someone's metatarsals I am sure they'd look like they were more concerned.

you could theoretically run with a ruptured ACL, you wouldn't get far before collapsing mind, but you could walk with an antalgic gait, which Aguero exhibited. But the physios would have gone through an on field assessment to see if he can continue (SALTAPS if you're interested) so they would have felt confident in allowing him to weight bear and they appeared to be contemplating allowing him to return at one point

Many will disagree but I think it's time to get Jovetic.

He will prosper with Aguero out and City have excellent fixtures. City won't stop scoring goals just because Aguero is out and Jovetic is likely to get a major share of those points.

I too have watched him in Italy. Not a lot, probably much less than you, but still some. And ive seen him play for City, most of his games here. And hes been good in exactly one of these games. Not really impressive considering his £30m price tag. I will actually be shocked if he steps up.

Beeing the star man that everything goes through in a much weaker league is completely different than beeing 3rd or 4th fiddle behind world class players in a much tougher enviroment. Lamela dominated the Serie A for Roma, look at him. Even Borini dominated his last 6 months in Rome, and what has he ever done. I think its a common misconception that Jovetic is a great player.

Lamela had 1 good season, Jovetic has been doing it for a while imo. I think we'll have to agree to disagree, like I said though I don't think he is a great goalscorer but he offers a lot in overall play, will chip in with some goals and has great potential.

35 in 116 in a weaker league doesnt really impress anybody. Its fine if you want to disagree with me, my opinion doesnt serve as the correct answer. I`ll just leave you with your own opinion and let time do the rest.

And who cares about Fiorentina and Montenegro? Both teams play vs significantly weaker opposition almost all games, in in both teams he was/is the star player.

Youre supposed to judge him on what he does now, in his current club. You cant justify him beeing great/a great talent by what he has done for Fiorentina and Montenegro when in 1,5 seasons for City hes done practically nothing to impress. And what he does for Montenegro against teams like Albania and Estonia shouldnt really matter.

Dzeko looks like a good replacement for Ageuro if he's gonna be out for a while. Will await injury news

          I might forgo keeper:
          Aguero/Fabregas/Chambers> Costa/9.7/Baines -4
          What you think?

      Krul
      Chambers
      Saylor
      Cork
      Fabregas
      Aguero

I'm slightly better off than you HVT....why doesn't that make me feel better ? 🙁
Still trying to cling to my WC this week though....

May well start with one or two transfers then see how Europe goes......

Will Kun drop this week and how many hit's will be roughly taken? I think it's important not to take a hit this week. I've taken -8 hit 2 weeks in a row

If confirmed out for 4-6 weeks or more his price will drop rapidly (max 0.3 in a GW) just like ADM

Been thinking how much id like ivan in my team recently, aguero to Rooney would free up funds to get him in at the expense of chambers. Thoughts? Would mean taking a hit but think they'll be plentiful this week tbh. Means keeping Austin and fab too

Is this a wise choice? fab has served me well from the start for 9m. Yaya is much more expensive and less consistent

    Guzan, McCarthy
    Baines, Bertrand, Chambers, Wisdom, Moore
    Hazard, Sanchez, Sigurdsson, Chadli, Boyd
    Aguero, Costa, Austin

2 FT, 0.2 ITB, hovering just outside the top 1k

Assuming Aguero is out long term...

    A) Aguero, Chambers > Rooney, Terry
    B) Aguero, Chambers, Chadli > Bony/Lukaku, Yaya, Yun (-4)

he's a nightmare to own, i've had him sporadically during the past few seasons. doing nothing and looking threatening is exactly what you're in for 🙂

He had a good run at the end of last season when the fixtures were good. I'm thinking he could do well against the crap opposition coming up.
