Great Expectations – Bobby Zamora

A broken leg in Gameweek 4 put paid to Bobby Zamora’s promising start in Fulham’s only Premier League campaign under Mark Hughes. The forward began the 2010/11 season in good form, with 3 Bonus Points away to Bolton on the opening day followed by an assist in the 2-2 home draw with Man United and a goal away to Blackpool at the tail end of August.

Fourteen Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points from the first three game weeks saw 17K managers ship Zamora in during the first international break, with a home fixture against Wolves looking likely to give the Cottagers their first win of the campaign. Twenty-nine minutes into the match, however, a challenge by Karl Henry resulted in Zamora being stretchered from the pitch with a broken leg and despite Moussa Dembele snatching an injury-time inner for the Cottagers, the injury to Zamora took the shine off their victory.

A six-month absence saw him return to action in early March and Zamora’s impact was immediate; coming off the bench to replace Danny Murphy on 70 minutes, he scored a last-minute penalty to clinch a 3-2 home win over Blackburn Rovers. Zamora wasted little time in carrying on his good form, with a two goals and an assist in the following couple of matches highlighting his top-flight capabilities and, with his price having dropped from 6.5 to 6.0, was looking a real bargain as double gameweek 34 approached.

Much to the chagrin of his Fantasy investors, Zamora made two brief sub appearances over those two fixtures and picked up just one FPL point for 45 minutes of game time, with Mark Hughes easing him back into action. This was a temporary blip, though, and the final four gameweeks of the season saw Zamora grab 1 goal, 3 assists and 4 Bonus Points, as the Cottager’s finished the season in eighth place.

Key Factors

  • New Fulham boss Martin Jol has already promised more attacking football at the Cottage this upcoming season and not only will this benefit the team’s forwards, it could lessen the appeal of their defensive players, with less clean sheets a possibility. Investment in their front men could be the way to go this season under Jol.

  • Zamora played just 757 minutes last term, with a total of nine starts and six sub appearances. Despite this, he picked up 5 goals, 5 assists and 10 Bonus Points and with 63 points, he averaged 4.5 points per game. This was the same return ratio as Clint Dempsey, despite the American’s reputation as a more reliable Fantasy performer.

  • Fulham’s Europa Cup qualifying games have seen them start the season earlier than any other top-flight team and Jol’s side could approach the start of the 2011/12 campaign with a little bit more match-sharpness than the rest of the Premier League.

  • The Cottagers have one of the kindest runs of early matches to the new campaign- a look at the season ticker sees their “fixture difficulty” ranked second easiest up to gameweek 10, with a home match against Man City in gameweek 5 the only time they face any of last season’s top five in their opening ten Premier League matches.

  • Coming in at 7.0, Zamora is still reasonably priced and looks certain to lead the line in Jol’s 4-4-2 formation, with Moussa Dembele and Andy Johnson likely to battle it out for the slot alongside him. Zamora is the only guaranteed starter up front under Jol and with the new manager determined to go on the attack, could prove to be a decent acquisition for those Fantasy managers willing to invest.

Surely wherever Nasri lands, he is a nailed on starter who will get goals, assists and BPs.

Been avoiding him this far, but am starting to work him into the system at 9.5M.

Surely if anything last season should have shown that a good squad is the way to go. Getting players in the idea that they're cheap and will never play (Ferguson etc) is a bad strategy in my opinion.
I know its tempting with the FPL inflation crisis but I advocate balance.

I was playing football with Shane when he was home a few weeks ago and he was saying how he hates playing LB, thinks he's too small for it and doesn't have a defensive mind.

After watching him put about 10 goals past us in 5-a-side in the space of 10 minutes playing up front and aging me by about 15 years in the process i can see why he wants to play LW. We all had 6 years and about a foot on him and he raped us 🙁

Hope this doesn't turn into another N'Zogbia situation where we try and play a LW at LB. He won't get a chance at LW either with Jonas and Marveaux both fighting for it.

I like the old system, although frustrating at times, it kept the game interesting and made you consider players you wouldn't normally consider. This benefits the casual players who will pick the likes of Vidic.

There's nothing more frustrating than a site returning an error but not giving any clues as to what you're doing wrong.

I've selected my team and when I hit enter, it tells me to correct the "error below". The error appears to be with my team name (this is merely a guess). But I have no idea wtf is wrong with my team name. I've tried it with/without spaces. It doesn't have any strange characters and isn't offensive.

    I'm clueless!

If it would say "name is already taken" or be specific about the error, then I'd know what to do.

Shit i'm a ManU fan but that's just hurting my head.....

.....so we're only on the one MLB and one footy match tonight?

FPLwise, RVP is in as a 12M man, so that i have options up front, either before or during the game.....biggest concern is no biggy in MF which restricts me if one of the big boys goes on a streak....

Forgot all about Odemwingie - good call. Malouda seems like something of a splurge at 10.5m but I guess everybody else seems to be getting him so must be me. 🙂

Why are so many teams considering De Vries, Al Habsi etc? They have pretty poor cleansheet potential, i feel it is best to pair Given with a better teams keeper. can someone tell me the keepers which rotate best with Given?

i went for the wolves keeper at the start of the season - worst mistake i could have made. my rival on the other hand, was sitting with Joe Hart all season.

Solid spine to the team but....

Luiz - is he a certain starter?

      Young - " " " " " " " " + poor fixtures

      Hernandez - " " " " " " " + poor fixtures

Luiz Upgrade to cole/terry or for Hangeland, or maybe one of the liverpool defenders...

Both Young and Hernandez for value look at villa, wigan or fulham for the first 6 games

    RMT version 2

    Given/Kenny
    Luiz/Kompany/Gibbs/Hughes/Simpson
    Silva/Nzog/Sinclair/Arfa/Fox
    Suarez/Torres/Bent

    All suggestions really appreciated 🙂

I have the same GK pair - seems solid

Gibbs - Do Arsenal keep clean sheets? Maybe take a look at Rodger Johnson £5m or Foley £4.5m at Wolves then invest the money in upgrading Luiz to Cole/Terry

A little top heavy... Suarez will be rested at start of season (Carroll is a better option until he is fit) Torres... Big gamble.. I am not sold personally... My two strikers added to Carroll are Zamora and Rodallega - both with good starts to the season...

Yeah Gibbs is one i am unsure about, cant think of a suitable replacement yet? thought Rafael if he get RB spot.
do you think RVP is worth the money? instead of Torres?

Thinking of going with one sure hitter from each of the big six, filling in the rest with decent budget options.

    E.G

    Given/Begovic
    Cashley / Kompany / Vidic / Simpson / Shittu

    VDV / Ben Arfa / D.Murphy/ Moses/ Sinclair

    RVP / Suarez/ Beckford

For the first three weeks, Silva instead of VDV and Torres instead of RVP.

Other option is two big hitters in midfield and strikers, one in defense, rotating Gks and mid priced defenders/midfield.

    Thoughts anyone?

rangel is pretty attacking for a RB, and swansea have some nice opening fixtues, so he'll be rotated in and out of my team. faulin probably wont see much time in my team but needed a 4.5 mid, any better at 4.5?

This was meant to go here:-

Also like this, except for Taarabt, simply because he will be gone, but there are plent of other good options at his price

Only other issue is lack of a hogh priced MF, (like me) which restricts you if one of ‘em goes on one

Really cant make my mind up what do people think of the following :

    Given (Kenny)
    Kompany / Terry / Huth / (Orr) / (Simpson)
Nzogs / VdV / Downing / Ben Arfa / (Buzsaky)
Suarez / Rooney or RVP / Holt

Also what do people think is the best formation to play
    4-4-2 or 3-4-3 ?

3-4-3 for me. It's so much more fun 🙂 It loks good but would like to see more Chels cover for the 1st half of the season (or so).

The best (and worst) thing about the pricing structure is that there is no ideal team. It's down to luck/skill.

Was thinking of gambling on Torres and swap RvP in later..

Its diff this season with all the uncertainty around the big forwards.. Tevez / Torres or Drogba / Rooney or Hernandez
