Great Expectations – Bobby Zamora

A broken leg in Gameweek 4 put paid to Bobby Zamora’s promising start in Fulham’s only Premier League campaign under Mark Hughes. The forward began the 2010/11 season in good form, with 3 Bonus Points away to Bolton on the opening day followed by an assist in the 2-2 home draw with Man United and a goal away to Blackpool at the tail end of August.

Fourteen Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points from the first three game weeks saw 17K managers ship Zamora in during the first international break, with a home fixture against Wolves looking likely to give the Cottagers their first win of the campaign. Twenty-nine minutes into the match, however, a challenge by Karl Henry resulted in Zamora being stretchered from the pitch with a broken leg and despite Moussa Dembele snatching an injury-time inner for the Cottagers, the injury to Zamora took the shine off their victory.

A six-month absence saw him return to action in early March and Zamora’s impact was immediate; coming off the bench to replace Danny Murphy on 70 minutes, he scored a last-minute penalty to clinch a 3-2 home win over Blackburn Rovers. Zamora wasted little time in carrying on his good form, with a two goals and an assist in the following couple of matches highlighting his top-flight capabilities and, with his price having dropped from 6.5 to 6.0, was looking a real bargain as double gameweek 34 approached.

Much to the chagrin of his Fantasy investors, Zamora made two brief sub appearances over those two fixtures and picked up just one FPL point for 45 minutes of game time, with Mark Hughes easing him back into action. This was a temporary blip, though, and the final four gameweeks of the season saw Zamora grab 1 goal, 3 assists and 4 Bonus Points, as the Cottager’s finished the season in eighth place.

Key Factors

  • New Fulham boss Martin Jol has already promised more attacking football at the Cottage this upcoming season and not only will this benefit the team’s forwards, it could lessen the appeal of their defensive players, with less clean sheets a possibility. Investment in their front men could be the way to go this season under Jol.

  • Zamora played just 757 minutes last term, with a total of nine starts and six sub appearances. Despite this, he picked up 5 goals, 5 assists and 10 Bonus Points and with 63 points, he averaged 4.5 points per game. This was the same return ratio as Clint Dempsey, despite the American’s reputation as a more reliable Fantasy performer.

  • Fulham’s Europa Cup qualifying games have seen them start the season earlier than any other top-flight team and Jol’s side could approach the start of the 2011/12 campaign with a little bit more match-sharpness than the rest of the Premier League.

  • The Cottagers have one of the kindest runs of early matches to the new campaign- a look at the season ticker sees their “fixture difficulty” ranked second easiest up to gameweek 10, with a home match against Man City in gameweek 5 the only time they face any of last season’s top five in their opening ten Premier League matches.

  • Coming in at 7.0, Zamora is still reasonably priced and looks certain to lead the line in Jol’s 4-4-2 formation, with Moussa Dembele and Andy Johnson likely to battle it out for the slot alongside him. Zamora is the only guaranteed starter up front under Jol and with the new manager determined to go on the attack, could prove to be a decent acquisition for those Fantasy managers willing to invest.

gks - par for the course around here.

def - for an "attacking" fullback, alcaraz hasn't had many returns, which is important because he surely won't be getting too many cleanies. ivanovic: looks a decent enough pick, though for your money sticking to the left side of chelski's defense might be safer.

mid - only questions are nani and tchoyi, who may be rotated. with tchoyi, fair enough, but 10m is a lot for someone not guaranteed to start. keep watching the preseason lineups.

att - no problems with torres/zamora. 9.5 is too much to have on the bench, should suarez get eased back in following his copa america exploits.

The Baines conundrum is killing me... On penalties he rivals any player for points and is still great value at 8.0, but that price can't be justified without penalties because his bonus points are so dependent on them, perhaps even more so under the new system.

    hey guys, lurked last season, decided to become involved seeing as i'm here for preseason. so, my first rate my team;

    given/begovic
    o'shea/fabio/kompany/a hughes/orr
    malouda/sinclar/ben arfa/kuyt/ferguson
    suarez/odem/rooney

thinking maybe downgrading kuyt - although he's fairly consistent and looking at the ea index may be a bp magnet - to upgrade ferguson, and running with someone else instead of suarez for the initial few games. also unsure re: fabio/rafael.

I like it. Odem I don't think is worth it at that price. Try Zamora.

Ferguson is too cheap. You want players to go up in price, and the only way with him is down, and there aren't any alternatives...

O'Shea is 5.0 in a Sunderland defense where you can get starters for 4.5.

    Given, Kenny

    Hughes, Kompany, Simpson, Alcaraz, Bramble

Lampard, Yaya Toure, Sinclair, Ben Arfa, Buszaky

    RVP, Rooney, Ba

The only thing I don't like is too much Newcastle, but Ben Arfa and Ba are such great deals...

New bonus points could really favor Yaya. He's always a consistent performer, and there's 3 penalty takers from the big teams in there along with Sinclair.

        You can't have them all.

I think I may go Rodallega over Ba just to diversify a little though.

Torres and Drogba are wait and sees, and since I have Lampard, I figure that's coverage.

Bent isn't worth 10.0 without good service.

Liverpool strikeforce is all on Suarez, but I can overlook him for a while when he has to deal with international hangover (well, that's what I'm hoping...)

Ba is a standout for me, but I think I'm going Barton ahead of Ben Arfa - the extra 0.5 is worth it for penalties. Wouldn't worry too much about 3 Newcastle players seen as Simpson will spend most of the time on the bench. (still sour over benching his 12 pointer last season!)

Right, further to my EA Index ramblings earlier, I've done a (very) quick few sums... Straight away, I'm going to say that these figures mean absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things, but they struck me as interesting at least.

I looked at the "Team of the Week" Index scores for the first 19 GWs of last season, and compared GK scores to those of the strikers. I should point out here that the EA TotW is a rigid 4-4-2 every week, so it doesn't necessarily give you the 11 players with the highest index score each week, which seems a bit daft.

Anyway, over the 19 weeks, GKs had Index scores ranging from 19-39, with the vast majority being early-mid 20s. In fact, the average weekly Index score for GKs over this period was 22.5.

Strikers on the other hand had a much larger range, with Index scores between 19 and 98 for the same 19 GW period. The average weekly index score for strikers was over double that of the GKs, at 46.3 index points per week.

This doesn't prove anything of course, and we really need someone with a much more logical outlook than me to mull over the figures. But initially it strikes me that the presence of GKs in the top 100 Indexed players of last season is down to consistent decent performances on their part, which while placing them well in the Index, doesn't necessarily bode well for BPs in FPL.

Anyway, I'll be digging around the stats more in the coming weeks, but right now, my gut feeling is that BPs will mostly be going to attacking players as before, except in the case of scoreless draws.

Oh, and I should point out the reason I looked into all this - I've seen a few people in different places suggest that under the new stat based BP system, Hart (or another GK with similar points as last season) could become the highest scoring player in the game this year.

I don't really like it. Seems to me like it will mostly be a distillation of a players base points, with goals/assists/clean sheets playing a large part. Remains to be seen how influential the stats will be, but I'm skeptical about that...

He'll have a decent role in midfield. Whatever system Chelsea employ, he'll still be their most forward central midfielder. Add on the fact they only have Malouda who can be classed as an out right winger, they need some movement forward from midfield or the strikers will be isolated.

Lampard is the only one they have at the moment who can do that.

How would you react to Lampard if Modric were to move to Chelsea? If he does move then 8million appears to be a steal IMO.

can someone talk to me about martin jol? last season fulham was a half decent source of cheap defensive points, but are they likely to be as defensive this season? or is jol more attacking?

ie: last season i didn't bother with fulham's midfield (dempsey aside), but more attacking football + a fit zamora means that maybe there's some joy to be had from picking someone in there. yes/no?

I'm torn b/w Zamora and Ba atm. Both have excellent fixtures in the first part of the season. Just worried about the service for Ba though...

How many big guns are people trying to include in your teams? By this I mean players who are 10.0 and above, at the moment I'm finding it hard getting a nicely balanced team and including 3.

          Actually no it'll always be 2 and a 9.5.

9.5 could be one of Suarez, Nasri and Silva.

Indeed. Hope we get word on him from Dalglish. Have an alternative option including Downing if it goes off the rails.

I'll keep away from Suarez for the first few weeks, but will happily jump on if/when he starts to look good.

I have two currently, both strikers. My team structure atm is something like this:

      5/4.5
      7.5/6/6/5.5/4.5
      7.5/6.5/6/6/5.5
      12/10/7.5

So basically I'm going all out on the attack, fairly heavy in defence and keeping it fairly budget in midfield.

I don't think I've seen a sinlge other team with Hernandez in. Am I missing something? United are surely going to be playing 4-4-1-1 and Hernandez looks likely to be banging them in. He didn't play in the Copa America so should be starting from GW1.

Ithink his price is putting people off and there's always a risk of rotation. He'll play the first few games but after that not sure.

I can't see Fergie dropping him to be honest. It's him or Berba in that role in front of Rooney and I can't see Fergie ever dropping the little pea bar fatigue next season.

£10m for someone who will be getting some of the best service in the league and appears to have one of the greatest goal scoring instincts the league has seen for a while is hardly unreasonable.

I don;t know bmb. 10m is a bit high imo. You may as well pay an extra 2m and bring in Rooney - goals, BP king and on pens!

Not sure I can afford a second 12m striker, and can't see anywhere I'd like to downsize.

If it's not Hernandez I'll stick to another 10mish striker like Carroll, Bent or Suarez. But I still think Chicharito will be banging them in though, and will offer good value.

Can see Rooney playing deep this season and not scoring so many, particularly if Sneijder does ever materialise, as he'll push on and Rooney will perhaps fill the gap behind him when he does. Also with 2/3 top class wingers maybe pushing up high Rooney could end up dropping back into midfield so the formation may look almost like 4-3-3 at times.

There is uncertainty with United's lineup atm as there is with all the big clubs. But Rooney is class, can score the special goal, takes pens, plays almost every minute of every game, and gets tons of BP.

I have RVP atm but Rooney is in my team if he egts injured.

No denying Rooney is class, just not so sure his current game is quite so suited to FPL and I don't think he's worth 12m atm. I may well be proved wrong as the season progresses.

I don't fancy barton to score all that many, plus if Ameobi is on the pitch then no pens for Barton. O'Hara is more attacking and nailed on for pens.

Hi guys, good to see FPL up and running again, but blimey everyone is expensive this year?

Struggling to make a good team, what are people's thoughts on Valencia for United?
Was thinking he's the only right winger, and that maybe Young and Nani will compete for the left wing?

    Any thoughts greatly appreciated 🙂

Wouldn't start with him. Too many ?'s. Only utd attacker I'd consider from the start is rooney. Seems to me that valencia, nani, young, hernandez are all competing for 3 spots with park, berbatov, cleverley, owen and wellbeck also in the mix. Minefield.

Not a bad idea at first glance, but he sometimes fills in at right back, and on the whole, compared to other people in the same range, he's just not as good a fantasy prospect.

      Yaya, Arteta, Bale, Modric
