Great Expectations – Bobby Zamora

A broken leg in Gameweek 4 put paid to Bobby Zamora’s promising start in Fulham’s only Premier League campaign under Mark Hughes. The forward began the 2010/11 season in good form, with 3 Bonus Points away to Bolton on the opening day followed by an assist in the 2-2 home draw with Man United and a goal away to Blackpool at the tail end of August.

Fourteen Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points from the first three game weeks saw 17K managers ship Zamora in during the first international break, with a home fixture against Wolves looking likely to give the Cottagers their first win of the campaign. Twenty-nine minutes into the match, however, a challenge by Karl Henry resulted in Zamora being stretchered from the pitch with a broken leg and despite Moussa Dembele snatching an injury-time inner for the Cottagers, the injury to Zamora took the shine off their victory.

A six-month absence saw him return to action in early March and Zamora’s impact was immediate; coming off the bench to replace Danny Murphy on 70 minutes, he scored a last-minute penalty to clinch a 3-2 home win over Blackburn Rovers. Zamora wasted little time in carrying on his good form, with a two goals and an assist in the following couple of matches highlighting his top-flight capabilities and, with his price having dropped from 6.5 to 6.0, was looking a real bargain as double gameweek 34 approached.

Much to the chagrin of his Fantasy investors, Zamora made two brief sub appearances over those two fixtures and picked up just one FPL point for 45 minutes of game time, with Mark Hughes easing him back into action. This was a temporary blip, though, and the final four gameweeks of the season saw Zamora grab 1 goal, 3 assists and 4 Bonus Points, as the Cottager’s finished the season in eighth place.

Key Factors

  • New Fulham boss Martin Jol has already promised more attacking football at the Cottage this upcoming season and not only will this benefit the team’s forwards, it could lessen the appeal of their defensive players, with less clean sheets a possibility. Investment in their front men could be the way to go this season under Jol.

  • Zamora played just 757 minutes last term, with a total of nine starts and six sub appearances. Despite this, he picked up 5 goals, 5 assists and 10 Bonus Points and with 63 points, he averaged 4.5 points per game. This was the same return ratio as Clint Dempsey, despite the American’s reputation as a more reliable Fantasy performer.

  • Fulham’s Europa Cup qualifying games have seen them start the season earlier than any other top-flight team and Jol’s side could approach the start of the 2011/12 campaign with a little bit more match-sharpness than the rest of the Premier League.

  • The Cottagers have one of the kindest runs of early matches to the new campaign- a look at the season ticker sees their “fixture difficulty” ranked second easiest up to gameweek 10, with a home match against Man City in gameweek 5 the only time they face any of last season’s top five in their opening ten Premier League matches.

  • Coming in at 7.0, Zamora is still reasonably priced and looks certain to lead the line in Jol’s 4-4-2 formation, with Moussa Dembele and Andy Johnson likely to battle it out for the slot alongside him. Zamora is the only guaranteed starter up front under Jol and with the new manager determined to go on the attack, could prove to be a decent acquisition for those Fantasy managers willing to invest.

Just compared the EA rankings with the FPL player rankings from last season. Throws up a few players who may benefit from the new bonus system.

    Name FPL Rank EA Rank
    Vincent Kompany 102 7
    Alex Song 88 35
    Patrice Evra 63 16
    Michael Essien 80 36
    Gael Clichy 72 33

So the numbers certainly support Kompany's popularity - he looks set to profit the most from this change. That coupled with his reclassification makes him look like a massive bargain.

Interesting stuff... however, with each new informative post like this, i feel like im no closer to cracking the code... pattern recognition is still failing. Itd be nice if the actim totals werent a black box.

Last year it seemed many people were leaving £2-4 in the bank at the start. Is that consciously part of anyones strategy this year?

Kompany, Hughes, Simpson, Alcaraz, 4-4.5 def
    Yaya, Sinclair, Duff, Hoolahan, Lampard
    Bent, Rooney, Rodallega

is this team decent enough? or should i do yaya to silva, and lampard to malouda instead? and not having RvP or Suarez might hurt me too.

Camzy, Yaya and Arfa over N'Zog and O'Hara??

N'Zog more attacking that Yaya and O'Hara similar to Arfa but with pen duties. Also, is Arfa a nailed on starter?

Yaya toure will score really well I feel. It's also the more flexible duo.

There are more options at 8.0 if Yaya doesn't deliver whereas with N'Zog, you won't get a better deal at 7.5, and same with O'Hara.

That's a great starting XI, just be sure to keep an eye on Luiz and Rafael. Good unique midfield, loving the choice of Brunt who IMO slips considerably under the radar. Only negative I think is Hernandez, could easily be turned into Suarez or Carroll.

late congrats to the scout team. 5 years back i would never have been able to imagine them on the official site specially after how regularly they criticised the pundit.

The biggest changes to the rules are:

The way that bonus points are allocated. They are using EA player rankings to determine who gets them and if there is a tie they will be shared.

Players will now get assists if they are fouled for free-kicks which directly result in a goal.

No more auto-vice-captain, You have to pick 'em.

Looking good! Do u want RVP in your team? You could get him for Carroll, and then upgrade elsewhere. I'll repost my team again, need a bit more feedback:

      Given Kenny
      Luiz Kompany Hughes Figueora Simpson
      Malouda Yaya Albrighton Sinclair Buszasky
      RVP Suarez Zamora

Got 0.5 in the bank in case Suarez doesn’t play.
Does my defense need strengthening? Should I get Ba over Zamora? Is Albrighton a good pick? Cheers.

I also had Rvp but now thinking he might be better to get after Gw3.

Fair point. I think he's decent value at either Wigan or Villa for 7.5m so will most likely stick with if he's at either club and likely to start the game. Other alternative would be Yaya.

Morning Jinswick - hows the team looking?

Really tough hey? I'm starting to think to much tinkering is a recipe for disaster.

To many uncertainties. No clear cut capt choices with City for gw1 is making it difficult.

Prob best just to go with the gut and then play WC early to catch bandwagons and correct selections mistakes(of which there will prob be lots!)

            Morning/afternoon from where I am!

Team is fairly set, although no doubt will see many changes before GW1. Captaincy choice isn't easy - depending on the Tevez situation, he could well come in for me and get the armband, but at the moment he is nowhere to be seen on my team sheet.

Morning Guys. Please RMT. It's my 1st draft so any advice is appreciated.

    Given, (Kenny)

    Cole, Kompany, Bramble, (Simpson), (Orr)

    Lampard, Malouda, Sessegon, Albrighton, Sinclair

    Bent, Zamora, (Holt)

My thinking is gks rotate well for 9 weeks. I feel I have to cash in on Chelsea I think they will start as well as last year hence the overload. Simpson and Bramble will rotate home fixtures. I like the idea of Sessegon behind the strikers. Villa and Fulham have great starts. And Sinclair is oop. What am I missing? Am I too light in front?

I like it a lot. Quite similar to what I'm thinking. Surely start holt though. Consider swapping lamps and bent for silva and roon or similar priced players. That way you can easily bring in any of the top priced fwd's if they hit form without having to do a re-shuffle in mid to afford it.

        Do the gks rotate?

Man U have a tough start so Vidic mght be poor value till fix soften.

I like Bramble where at 4.5 there's some good value. Bruce rates him highly so sure to start and pick up bps/cs.

Orr-can I ask why you have picked him? I have him too but more out of populist thinking more than anything.

Hoilett is a POO and I would avoid him.

I have some serious concerns about that midpark though. VDV will do what Lampard offers for 2 mill less. Sessegnon looks a must-have OOP imo.

I originally had Malouda in my MK1 squad and then went Lamps. I think I may be pandering to my insecurities... I am just not used to having a team of "average" players as I always like a Fabs or Drog to make me feel good.

the big names are also the overpriced ones imo. Prime example.... Rooney... Fergie and Scholes have been talking about his ability to play central midfiled...

Rooney plays all over the place at the best of times. I think I need to see/read about some proper friendlies and see what happens with transfers. I do know that on 13th my team will be rdically different as I joing yet another bandwagon 😉

😀 you better believe it. But seriously... Malouda might be tempting but he is rotatable and also always subbed off. He's definitely my most likely choice from chelsea though.

Something people are overlooking is that Chelsea have a new boss - like Mourhino he doesn't seem scared to do what he feels even if it upsets some. Until we see the teams he's putting out regularly we're not going to know who his preferred squad and sub/rotation tactics are.

1.Downing and Silva, when buying Downing you are also buying a part of Carroll as he will send over so many crosses for him, if Carroll scores well then I imagine Downing will be behind most of it.

I don't, not at £10m, that's too much for Bent in mg book.

Zamora has just as good fixtures and is £3m cheaper. If you're paying £10m for someone this season they'd better be captain material.

Not sure you'd stick the armband on Bent most weeks, so that's not the best use of £10m in my opinion.

identical strikers to mine, the only position i feel confident about right now. id feel better if you had one more heavy hitter in the midfield from one of the bigger clubs. naturally that means downgrading somewhere though.

I had a sauasage sandwich this morning myself. Hash browns are a welcome addition. Washed down with a cup of tea. Aww yeah.

Why is everyone using Given? I know he's moving to AV and that hasn't been displayed by the EPL-FF guys, but last year AV were leaky as heel at the back. Will McLeish really make that much difference, especially now they've sold off 2 of their best players?

Think they'll become more defensively minded, but my main reason is save points tbh

Good early fixtures and save points.

The prices are too prohibitive this season that picking a keeper who you think will keep cleanies will eat up a large chunk of change.

Him or Begovic at £5m are about as much as most scouters want to spend on a keeper.

Save points, great fixtures, guaranteed starter, low price, moved to a team where the manager is famous for being dour and defensive...other than that I really can't think of a single reason!

    OK, 1st RMT:

    Given - Kenny
    Samba - Kompany - Luiz - Brown - Simpson
    VDV - Etherington - Sinclair - Murphy - O'Hara
    Rooney - RVP - Holt

I haven't really echeckd fixtures though and I feel bad not having a Pool player...
