The FPL Bonus Points – Moving the Goalposts?

While the Fantasy Premier League player list is taking up the bulk of our time, sapping our energies and thinking – some will no doubt have noticed that Wednesday’s launch also brought several rule changes. One such tweak involved the allocation of Bonus Points. The “man in the stand” from the Press Association is no longer the “judge and jury” behind these points – from this season the FPL have gone back to a method driven by an Index, fuelled by statistics that measure player actions and team performance.

The EA SPORTS Player Performance Index (EA SPORTS PPI) will now be the recipient of our post-match wrath – although given that cold hard statistics will be behind it, it’s going to be more difficult to justify the bile.

Such a change inevitably poses some questions but for us at Fantasy Football Scout, it also gives us the opportunity to offer a new feature to offer Members a helping hand.

What is the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index?

The Premier League site offers a full explanation of this right here so we won’t go into too much detail. Effectively the index uses an algorithm to provide a single value which offers an appraisal of a player’s performance in a Premier League match. That algorithm takes into account a variety of statistics gathered from a match reflecting player actions on the pitch such as – shots, clearances, saves etc. Goals scored, assists and clean sheets are perhaps the biggest factors in the calculation of the index score but crucially, the outcome of the match is also very significant. A player in the winning team is far more likely to register a high EA SPORTS PPI score than a player on the losing side.

What does this mean for the Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points?

It’s hard to say. While we are likely to have more visibility on the factors that affect the award of the Bonus Points, it’s still very difficult to predict which players will benefit next season. The fact that winning performances are crucial suggests that players amongst the top sides will be far more likely to earn big totals of Bonus Points than those turning out for struggling sides. To put this into perspective, Charlie Adam had the highest Bonus Point total in the Fantasy Premier League game last season. However, he ranked just 20th overall in the EA SPORTS PPI.

It’s also notable that, out of the top 25 EA SPORTS PPI ranked players last season, 10 of them were Man United or Chelsea players, 3 were at Man City, 2 at Liverpool and 1 at Arsenal. Charlie Adam was the only player from a relegated club in the top 30. Scott Parker – the player of the year last season – was not in the top 10 midfielders and was ranked 70th overall.

The jury is very much out on the effectiveness of the EA SPORTS PPI then but we can only really speculate on how it will distribute the FPL Bonus Points until the season is underway. One thing we’re pretty sure on – we noticed last season that goalscorers were big beneficiaries of Bonus Point awards – our guess is that this will continue with the implementation of the EA SPORTS PPI. Goalscorers on winning sides are set for regular gains then. Is that any different to the old PA Sports method? Only time will tell.

How can Fantasy Football Scout help?

At least now we know that the statistics available to our Members have a definite impact on a player’s likelihood of earning FPL Bonus Points. Our Members already have access to the statistics that contribute to the EA SPORTS PPI via our Opta data. By interrogating last season’s data now, you can already get a view on the top performers across the statistics that matter. We will be publishing members articles to aid this process too.

As you no doubt will have heard, Fantasy Football Scout are also contributing articles to the FPL this season. “The Scout” will examine the Bonus Point allocation each gameweek and attempt to breakdown the factors behind the awards using the EA SPORTS PPI data.

We’re going to provide something new however. Something a little extra…

The Scout ICT Index – Influence, Creativity and Threat

We have a new way for Members to read and analyse statistics this season. We’ve built our own Fantasy Football Index – the Scout “ICT” Index. This measures the performance of Premier League players in three key areas – Influence, Creativity and Threat. The first of those, a player’s Influence, will use similar performance indicators to the EA SPORTS PPI via our Opta data, although our algorithm will be different.

Our index score for Influence won’t take the results into consideration and will therefore offer a level playing field to those players who suffer defeat in a match. In this way our Index will hopefully be effective at finding influential players within struggling clubs, but should still offer our Members a view on which players are more likely to score highly in the EA SPORTS PPI and therefore be in line for Bonus Points. While the FPL Bonus Points arriving “the morning after matches” – our members can get access to our ICT index once we update our data – often just 10-20 minutes after the final whistle has blown.

In basic terms the ICT index will help to make our Opta data more digestible. It will offer one single index score for Influence, one for Creativity and one for Threat. These will help to measure a player’s importance to their team and to a match, a player’s likelihood to earn assists and to score goals, or at least get in goalscoring situations. Those three figures will then be combined to create a single ICT Index score to measure a player’s overall performance contribution from a Fantasy perspective.

Index scores will be generated on a gameweek basis and cumulatively over the season. The full Opta data will still be available of course, but Members will now have an easy route to identify how players are performing across the key statistics.

The index, like any football index, will be far from perfect. There will be tweaks along the way. Plenty of discussions as we go. Even so, the ICT Index is already providing us with plenty of talking points and insight behind the scenes and we think it’s going to be a valuable addition for our Members. It will also give us plenty of material to discuss in a series of new Members articles.

We currently have the ICT Index in test and will be creating new tables and new sidebar widgets that will give Members quick access to the top performers on our Index on a gameweek basis and over the season as a whole. These widgets will also form the basis of our new dashboard available to Members when they log into the Members area.

Keep ‘em peeled for more news on this in the next few weeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Lots of people going in without Liverpool cover, do you not see them doing well next season? Too difficult to choose a player ? Worried Suarez will be tired?

    What is it?

Their fixtures are quite good as well....

Only Liverpool player I'd want it Suarez right now and I'm quite happy with RVP, Rooney and Zamora.

Until we see how they line up, there's just too many midfielders to pick from and too much rotation threat

yeah, thats my dilemma. I really want Suarez in my team, on form for Uruguay and scoring goals. Just when he's after playing in a big tournament and other players are well rested he could be easily rotated. Then there's Kuyt too, and this new BP system might suit him, looking at last seasons stats.

Everyone was a little unfair on him tbh, everybody jumped on the bandwagon despite us having Chelsea and Liverpool in our first 3 games. He then had personal problems and didn't play for a while and then was just on and off with injuries for the rest of the season once he got back into the side.

He was really looking the part though once Hodgson had arrived, played brilliant against Stoke away but then twisted his ankle early March and that was his season over.

I know he can a huge impact at this level, under Mowbray if we had played him and Mulumbu earlier we 100% would of survived that season.

Fabio captained the Under 17 world cup winning team, ahead of Rafael, and also I think a lot rate Fabio higher.

Although, I think the fact Fabio played so much towards the end of last season was because he was the most in form right back, most if not all of the other contenders werent fully fit or were injured, and there was no need to disrupt the defence at such an important stage of the season.

I expect them to be rotated.

Fabio is a bit like Zabaletta, can play right back or left back.

As MF said, Fabio was picked for a lot of games, including Barca. Shows how much Fergie rates him.

Not saying Rafael won't get games, just that there will be rotation.

Personally, I'm trying to get defenders who are regulars. I spent too many transfers swapping defenders last year

You're taking a big gamble with both rafael & bosingwa in defence, specially since simpson and orr arent likely to return much.

questions marks over ireland and moses.

+ Suarez will miss start of season.

That's true, i'll wait a bit and maybe i'll get a clearer indication of who's preferred in the full back position. Rafael or Fabio and Bosingwa or Ivanovic

Ireland is a risk yea, but he was playing in the whole yday apparently so could be good if he finds his fitness, and i think he'll be first choice.

Moses will be a regular starter once Nzog leaves i think.

Was tempted by Sess, but i really like Gyan due to him having penalties too.

You sure about Suarez? I reckon 3 weeks is enough time for him to be properly rested and fit for the start of the season

Bosingwa and Rafael are good prices but both rotation threats.

VDV on all set pieces which is great but don't like Spurs fixtures, think I'd rather silva.

Not sure Walcott is good value for money. Gyan on pens, but Sessegnon as a oop might be a better punt and upgrade Gyan.

VDV and Walcott to Sessegnon and Silva and then Gyan to Bent, Torres, RVP (if you have enough)??

        Agree with this post.

Think you need sure starters going into the season, Bosingwa and Rafael are quite risky.

Walcott could be good, will he get the games though? Also If Cesc and Nasri leave, he wont get the same defence splitting service that he did last year where his pace was utilised and all he really had to do was finish it.

yeah that's true soup. Van der vaart's fixtures are tough i admit Andy. Maybe i'll get Silva in for his early fixtures, and trade for VDV when spurs' have their easy rum.

I have enough to upgrade Gyan, yes Andy. Think i'll get Torres as i'll probably need Chelsea attacking coverage for their easy fixtures.

Then maybe trade Rooney for RVP around GW 4 or something...

So… the players at the top of the player performance index are the ones likely to score bonus points.
    http://www.premierleague.com/page/PlayerPerformanceIndex/0,,12306,00.html

Man City’s 4th player in the list is Hart (and Tevez may go).
    Chelsea’s 3rd is Cech.
    Liverpool’s 2nd is Reina.

Those players got 4, 2 and 2 bonus points last year respectively.

So… is it likely that when those teams win the keepers are potentially going to be in line for more bonus points this year? Could make a difference to the keeper selection policy.

    Any thoughts?

I agree with your point and we'll not really know until well into the season I suppose... I do wonder though if we are going to see more bonus points going the way of the GKs... maybe only to get them to double figures but it could be more.

I've read talk that Kompany might be due a fair number of bonus points this year under the new system (and I agree with that). But it might be that Hart will get similar to him (as he's not going to be getting points via attacking).

I did a wee bit of analysis yesterday evening. I'll try and dig up the post for you. But in short, I can't see GKs getting BPs unless they have a lot to do in a 0-0.

Right, this was my ramble... and again, just supposition on my part, given the limited data available from last season.

            Excellent, cheers for that.

I'll be interested if a similar look at the stats shows that players like Kompany also aren't likely to pick up a lot of extra bonus points.

By the way, I only started thinking about this because I wanted to find the top 5 scorers for each club and noticed the three goalkeepers above.

My thinking being that if a player I'm looking at is also the top player on the inndex for ther club (even if not near the top) then all the better.

Not convinced he'll start straight away anyway, but his goalscoring/assisting record is pretty good, so yeah, it's pretty annoying.

Walcott's the same price and a midfielder, so would be better value while he's still starting.

Just been looking at some championship stats from the last few years. Interestingly, Newcastle and QPR got almost the same amount of clean sheets (22/25) in their title winning seasons. Newcastle kept 9 clean sheets last season in the PL, should we expect the same from QPR?

What can we take from this? That QPR defenders would appear the best value out of the promoted sides, but we already knew that, so nothing really... but I've written it now...

Can’t see QPR comparing to Newcastle’s back four. Newcastle had players with top level experience – Coloccini, Enrique, Simpson, S Taylor. They also had Nolan, Barton and Tiote protecting them. In comparison, QPR look a little out of their depth to say the least.

Clint Hill, One Size, Danny Shittu... QPR team on paper shouldn't have even got promoted - very middle of the road Championship.

"the players at the top of the player performance index are the ones likely to score bonus points."

Not necessarily. That's a season long total, which may have been accumulated "slow and steady" especially in the case of GKs I would guess. So while they've been racking up the index points all year, their individual weekly totals may not be enough to single them out for BPs, especially games where attacking players on their own team have done well.

      Indeed.

Score 7/10 each week (not looked into the numbers) will always get you good returns - but when there's three people regularly getting an 8 or 9 in the same game, then dipping to a 6 the next as someone else stands out, it might not be so good.

What I take from the new bonus points: A great big unknown until we see some samples. By Transfer Window deadline day I may feel a bit more confident in "patterns".

You can get a decent idea about individual game scores by looking at the EA Index teams of the week from last season.

The main pattern I got was goals = points. Especially for defenders.

          http://www.premierleague.com/page/TeamOfTheWeek/0,,12306~2337023,00.html

Using Arsenal as an example (as I watched that game) Diaby and Eboue are there because they scored. Fabregas was the best player on the pitch by miles, yet didn't score, so isn't there.

Everyone in that team has goals or assists.

And, as you can see, Brad Friedel was the best keeper with 21 points - which is still only 3/4 of the second worst score in that team.

Haddn't looked into it one jot myself - but it looks like winning goalscorers there.

Agreed, the stat you really need is average performance index points per game - and even that has its limits when it comes to usefulness.

Van Persie and Bent, for example, have the same amount of points, which is misleading when you consider RVP played half as many minutes (simplified figure). So that means RVP would get an average of twice as many index points as Bent per game, and he would be more likely to pick up bonus.

I didn't have a problem with the bonus before, and I don't mind about this system either - it will just be a case of reacting quickly to how things pan out.

Silva doesn't get enough goals for me.

        Tempted to do either

        a) Given -> Al Habsi as he rotates better with Ruddy, and then perhaps bring a better keeper in from GW5 onwards, or

I'm wondering/hoping if Silva will get pens when Tevez eventually bogs off. He took a few for Valencia, admittedly when Villa wasn't on the pitch.

    Before GW1.

    Tevez leaves.

Aguero signs and gets priced at £12m.

Who would put him in their teams?

            Van Persie - Poor fixtures
            Rooney - Poor fixtures
Tevez - Good fixtures but probably won't be at City
Drogba - Good fixtures but who knows if he will start
            Torres - See above
Suarez - Decent fixtures but might play deep

People are saying Lampard is expensive, but at least he will 100% play, I'd rather spend big on him than any of these strikers above who all have doubts surrounding them.

I can afford Lampard and Suarez instead of Silva and RVP. Just means I have no Arsenal or City attacking coverage. Would at least like some City.

Yeah, City or just a wait and see for me. I don't really think Silva is worth it at 9.5 so will probably get Tevez' replacement or Tevez himself if he sticks around.

I don't actually mind not having any Arsenal in my team until GW4, fixtures are horrible.

Big players perform in hard fixtures. Big players perform even better in easy fixtures.

Is my theory. If I had a choice of Rooney (TOT/mcy/EVE) vs Van Persie (WIG/bol/SWA) - I'd go Dutch.

My last thought before bed, if the prices are bloody high now it's going to be an utter utter uber-bitch once all the price rises start after GW1. If you miss a bandwagon you're screwed.

Although it might make the whole thing more exciting I suppose.

I honestly think the prices are ok, some are overpriced but others could be potential bargains. Drogba since he came to England has always gone good season/poor season/good season/poor season. He wasn't the best last season so if he starts firing again this year at 10.5 could be a bargain.

Young will probably play the first match but is a rotation risk and not sure he's worth £10m. He may get free kicks but he won't have pens.

Rafael is another rotation risk as is Luiz. Both nice players to have if they get games though.

Agree with Andy regarding rotation risks. From past experience I've found its best to play it safe at the start. Get all guaranteed starters and keep the prem newbies to a minimum. You've got 38 free trades and 2 wildcards to bring em in once you know the situation.

    I def won't do a RMT.
But I'm looking seriously at doubling up on Villa/ QPR def.
Given & Dunne or Collins and Kenny & Gorkss.

Loving the rotation (first 5 weeks is) BOL/BLA/WOL/NEW/NEW.

I've never doubled up before on a cheap GK/Def from the same team who rotate with another pair.

Villa hopefully more defensively sound under McLeish. QPR great defensive record in the championship (admittedly a risk) but hoping for the newly promoted early season feel good factor.

    Bad, mad or genius?

I like doubling up on defenders, especially early in the season (when, I think, offenses haven't 'gelled' quite yet) ...

but one double is a gamble - two doubles to rotate is just plain courageous. Two doubles where one is a promoted team *might* just be lunacy.
