Set-Piece Takers Updated

One of the benefits of the international break is that it allows us to pause and take stock and perhaps refresh some neglected areas of the site.

We’ve been able to update our set-piece takers based on the evidence of the season so far and, of course, last season’s records – you can now view the updated table – listing the penalty, direct free-kick and corner and indirect free-kick takers for every side – right here.

Mikel Arteta’s shift to Arsene Wenger’s squad has undoubtedly had the biggest impact on the current set-piece landscape. Having relieved Leighton Baines of free-kick and spot-kick duties for Everton at Blackburn in Gameweek three, his deadline day transfer to the Emirates has put Baines back in control, proving a major boost to the left-back’s appeal for the remainder of the season. We’re yet to see what kind of impression Arteta can make at Arsenal but, there’s little doubt he arrives with the reputation of one of the league’s primary set-piece experts and Wenger could well look to relieve Robin Van Persie of some of his responsibilities in this area.

Revisting that Blackburn vs Everton clash in the previous Gameweek – it’s worth noting that Junior Hoilett took on spot-kick duties with both David Dunn and Morten Gamst-Pedersen on the pitch. Jason Roberts was available, but Hoilett got the nod over him. Roberts was then off the pitch when Mauro Formica hit the post with his effort. This leaves the Blackburn Rovers spot-kick situation in flux, but we’ve given Hoilett promotion above Roberts in the pecking order, despite Saturday’s miss. New arrival Yakubu could yet have a say in this however.

Indeed, we’re still waiting on the impact of a host of new signings on the set-piece set-up. We imagine that both Samir Nasri and Juan Mata will both have a say for City and Chelsea respectively. Similarly, we’re yet to see how Steven Gerrard’s return, with the Spurs game in a fortnight the target, will influence the situation at Liverpool. Right now Charlie Adam is hogging set-plays but, we imagine that could change on Gerrard’s return to the fold.

Having established a new starting point for the season, we will work to keep this table updated and refreshed on a regular basis as the Gameweeks roll by.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Heh...thing is if I save 1mil there it's gonna go on my final defensive slot and I'll get Andre Santos, so I'm definitely not forgetting about Arsenal. If I could find a defender I loved the look of for 5.5 it'd make things easier.

    Which do you prefer?

    1. Arteta, Suarez
    2 Walcott, Dzeko
    3. Jarvis, RVP

    Other mids/forw are:

    Quick question:

    Vorm, Begovic
Baines, Alex, De Laet, STaylor, Enrique
    Jarvis, Moses, Nzog, Cabaye, Brunt
    Dzeko, Rooney, Suarez

Swapped Torres for Dzeko this week.

Is there any area where a 4 point hit would be worth it?

Hi Pleccy, that's my concern also.
There was a report on here earlier last week suggesting Aguero may be rested as he has a friendly in India three days before the Premier League game.
I think Tevez will deifinately play this weekend as he isn't involved in international duties and is now 100% fit.
I would have got him in instead of Dzeko but it would have ruined the rest of my team.
I just can't see Mancini resting Dzeko now he's in such good form...

I suppose so. City are difficult because they have 4 top strikers. Maybe I'll leave Dzeko in, and put Sturrige in later (if sturridge get regualar starts).

is it naive of me to think Dzeko will indeed start. He's in top form, leading scorer, and player of the month and I think he will at least get 60 minutes of playing time. This will give him plenty of time to score against a side like Wigan and it's very important for City to win the little games.

Also the extra .5 allows me to get Woodgate over De Laet.

Norwich have some nice fixtures coming up and don't think the Norwich defence are terrible by any strech. He rotates well, and don't like doubling up ever, especially on weaker teams like Newcastle. They won't keep clean sheets every week. They've so far come up against an Arsenal team in turmoil, and then Sunderland and Fulham who have scored 2 goals between them in 3 games.

Gunners could switch to a deadly counter attacking 4-4-2 with a deeper back line.

    Scezenenezzy

    Sagna verm mertesacker santos

    Walcott arteta/ramsey song gervinho

    Rvp park

    Some serious pace there 😮
Walcott, gervinho & park's off the ball runs would give Arteta & rvp killer through ball options. The backline would sit deep to invite teams forward and open up space, that way mertesacker's lack of pace won't be exposed too much either.
Not too dissimilar to wenger's tactics when he actually won things.

I'm thinking a modern 4-2-3-1 might be a better idea, allowing the fielding of 2 DMs and allowing the promising Frimpong game time to develop. Arsenal's DMs feel a bit soft to be playing just 1 of them, when you run 2 there's less space so you worry less about Per's lack of pace too. 4-2-3-1 allows Arteta to play further forward, and RVP can function perfectly fine as a lone forward.

4-4-2 is great when you have 2 box-to-box midfielders but Arsenal have only one now in the shape of Wilshere.

Can't agree with you there. Looked awesome vs Bolton and on a better day he could have scored 2 and had an assist. Scores regularly, but if he isn't scoring, he's involved in almost everything positive Liverpool do, and he'll most likely get at least an assist each week.

Not saying he isn't great value, a striker playing week in week out for Liverpool with his creativity at 9.5 is good value and he will score consistently but I don't think he will score enough goals to maybe give him the monster scores that the likes of Rooney, Van Persie etc are capable of.

I'd be very surprised if Woodgate were to be dropped on his current form.

Looks like Woodgate is playing in league games and rested for the Euro League.

Woodgate's in good form. His spot isn't under threat for now.

Suarez averaged over 5ppg at the end of last season same as Roonpigster.
Hard to compare after 3 games.

However, for 9.5 he is exceptional value and baps are nailed on most weeks.
