The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Double-barrelled

Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s left-foot ensured that the double gameweek had the impact we’d anticipated, but there can be no doubt the he was an unexpected source of satisfaction.

A 30-yard screamer, deflecting off Tim Cahill’s posterior, marked the closest Everton’s Aussie has got to getting his name on the scoresheet this season. Assou-Ekotto has gone one better than the Socceroo, rightly claiming a stunning strike, although his application for goal of the season will surely be turned down thanks to Cahill’s intervention.

With 10% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, after over 40,000 transfers in for Gameweek 20, Assou-Ekotto has clearly provided a major boost to a fair slice of Fantasy managers. Those who missed out on tonight’s goal, assist and clean sheet bonanza can at least take some comfort from the fact that such returns were far from signposted. The Cameroon international had scored just one league goal in his previous five seasons – he had mustered just a single shot on target this term before this evening.

It was surely Assou-Ekotto’s price tag, rather than his proven attacking prowess, behind his selection for Tottenham’s double Gameweek. His investors could hardly have expected a profit of 21 point (24 with the inevitable bonus) for their punt.

All the expectation was instead laid at the door of Gareth Bale, Rafael Van der Vaart and Emmanuel Adebayor. While the two of that trio managed to scratch together an assist of Tottenham’s two matches, Adebayor was a major let down; just two goal attempts, both off target, saw the Togo striker do little to justify the FPL armband.

For many, the first double gameweek passed as a non-event – a reminder that the hype and over investment so often involved, can slap us in the face. And yet, ironically, the unlikely profit from Assou-Ekotto demonstrates just how that extra transfer, perhaps even a 4-point hit, can pay off spectacularly when the doubles come around.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

quick tip for anyone who has used their WC this week, BAE's value will rise tonight and most probably again before the next GW so even if u don't want him in your team transfer him in now, then remove him just before the deadline and u should make 0.1 profit

Only if you are using a WC this week.. it depends on your team and who you want to bring in.. it really doesn't take a lot of effort to transfer him in and out and that 0.1 can come in handy. i've done it this week with sess yakubu and now hopefully BAE (neither will actually be in my team)

Repost: The big questions for next week:

    1) Baines has avl, BLA. On the other hand, Everton suck. Keep or cut my losses now?
    2) Is MUN-BOL going to be a massacre – is Valencia enough coverage?
    3) Will QPR put up a fight at Newcastle under Hughes, or is it a perfect Toon fixture – to get in Cabaye/Bomb Arfa?
    4) Swansea host Arsenal. Is it going to be another Swansea CS special?
    5) Will Chelsea overwhelm Sunderland at home, or will the MON effect strike again?
    6) Ade (C) ? …………… JOKING

      1) Get rid
      2) I'm (c) Rooney. Wouldn't feel happy without at least one of Rooney or Nani this week
      3) Toon may well concede; they're missing Tiote and QPR have had bad results due to their defence not so much their attack. However I still fancy Newcastle to score a couple. I'm getting Cabaye.
      4) Can't see it. I'm playing Krul over Vorm
      5) Have to back Chelsea
      6) There are far worse choices this week, but also better ones! I'd captain Bale over him

The big answers for next week:

      1) Keep for now (but aim to sell after BLA)
      2) Valencia is enough - it wont be a masacre.
      3) The 'new manager affect' will apply - expect a fight from QPR.
      4) No CS for Swansea this week. Expect RVPs name to appear on the scoresheet
      5) Reality check for Sunderland. Chelsea to win 2-0
      6) Yes......................(also JOKING!)

      1) Cut
      2) Yes but yes - Valencia providing the most consistently good pts return
      3) QPR will come good. See what transpires with Cabaye with Tiote gone before buying
      4) No
      5) Yes. Sunderland return to their normal result at the Bridge. 3-0 Chelsea.
      6) Good one! I captained VDV this week, will be handing the armband to Bale next week 🙂

Yeah from the times I've watched him his contribution to the team is not bad - holding up the ball a lot, making chances for the mids. But FPL wise it's bad, and end of the day he's still a striker - he should be a goal threat.

We're running pretty light on strikers now!
            Ade not scoring.
Aguero playing for a team out of shape.
Rooney is potentially explosive but there's been a lot of people burnt.
RVP playing away to Swansea this week.
Sturridge should return but not the biggest scorer and in a turbulent team that mainly score from mid.
            Yak just unpredictable...

I want him in my WC team, he's a beast, but can't really do it if he's not starting regularly. Lambert tends to rotate players in blocks (I assume that is so whatever team who puts out will have good chemistry and be used to playing together - a sound strategy in my book), so it might be Morison's turn to start on the bench for a good few weeks.

So I'm swaying towards Yak. No longer a differential but he's nailed on, on pens, a great finisher. Just don't watch Blackburn matches if you have him, it's painful. He spends the majority of the game standing 50 yards from any of his team mates while they all defend.

Prior to the DGW he was the most consistent scorer in the Spurs team (i.e. least number of matches with higher than a 2) as far as I know, mainly due to his ability to score, assist and get bonus regularly. Also had the highest overall PPI and most bonus points of all Spurs players. At least that's what I keep telling myself to try to get over handing him the armband.

If Evans is playing reasonably regularly it has to be him; just too cheap to pass up. Smalling is probably slightly more secure if you're willing to pay that bit extra. Always worth trying to fit in a Citeh defender too. I get Clark and Shotton are oop, but I'm not convinced by either defence as far as getting cleanies goes.

"Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s left-foot ensured that the double gameweek had the impact we’d anticipated, but there can be no doubt the he was an unexpected source of satisfaction. A 30-yard screamer, ...... "

I remember there was someone saying something like "Watch BAE score a screamer at home versus Everton..."

Well, back to my self-imposed FFS vacation. Just came on to gloat in the Spurs victory (lovely to see Lennon turn Baines inside-out like a ribbed turkey).

Is it worth forgeoing Aguero and getting 2 mid-price option (my current strikers are RvP, Odem and Sturridge, but could maybe get Yak in) and spending in mid instead, could lose Aguero and get Silva, Bale, Nani, Dempsey and McLean as my mids, worth it, or just get Valencia ahead of Nani and spend the money on defence?

Not a bad strategy; I'd go with Studge and one of Morison or Yak. Aguero is always gonna score a few but City's form worries me at the moment. Looking at their fixtures I'd want Richards, Silva and Aguero, but I'm not sure it's wise unless they buck their ideas up a bit. Missing Komp and Yaya big time.

Defence is horrific. BAE/Walker has just shown you; if you invest a bit of cash, you will be rewarded with CSs in the long run.

        Now, now, Corrigan!

Shotton - great homegame cs ratio.
Kelly - fullham is a strong cs team with good fixtures.
Williamson - strong cs team, also good fixtures.

Those are as good as the expensive ones as of now, with the exception of Liverpool.

        As for the two others:

Gabbidon - get him out, myers77!
        C. Clark - too much of a risk.

I agree those are weak choices.

Myers, Imo you have two choices:

get two better cheap defenders, like Senderos and Caulker /Taylor, or one cheap and one expensive: Skrtl / Senderos. When the big teams are finished clashing against each other, the big teams are interesting teams for defense.

        For now, spend money upfront.

If it's with Vorm then it's difficult as Swans have some tough fixtures, but I think it'd feel like a waste of a transfer to Stockdale to Schwarzer after 3 or 4 weeks. Who is your current keeper?
