The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Double-barrelled

Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s left-foot ensured that the double gameweek had the impact we’d anticipated, but there can be no doubt the he was an unexpected source of satisfaction.

A 30-yard screamer, deflecting off Tim Cahill’s posterior, marked the closest Everton’s Aussie has got to getting his name on the scoresheet this season. Assou-Ekotto has gone one better than the Socceroo, rightly claiming a stunning strike, although his application for goal of the season will surely be turned down thanks to Cahill’s intervention.

With 10% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, after over 40,000 transfers in for Gameweek 20, Assou-Ekotto has clearly provided a major boost to a fair slice of Fantasy managers. Those who missed out on tonight’s goal, assist and clean sheet bonanza can at least take some comfort from the fact that such returns were far from signposted. The Cameroon international had scored just one league goal in his previous five seasons – he had mustered just a single shot on target this term before this evening.

It was surely Assou-Ekotto’s price tag, rather than his proven attacking prowess, behind his selection for Tottenham’s double Gameweek. His investors could hardly have expected a profit of 21 point (24 with the inevitable bonus) for their punt.

All the expectation was instead laid at the door of Gareth Bale, Rafael Van der Vaart and Emmanuel Adebayor. While the two of that trio managed to scratch together an assist of Tottenham’s two matches, Adebayor was a major let down; just two goal attempts, both off target, saw the Togo striker do little to justify the FPL armband.

For many, the first double gameweek passed as a non-event – a reminder that the hype and over investment so often involved, can slap us in the face. And yet, ironically, the unlikely profit from Assou-Ekotto demonstrates just how that extra transfer, perhaps even a 4-point hit, can pay off spectacularly when the doubles come around.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

          Luckily - well if you call not having points scoring machines like Ba, Silva and Kompany 'luck' - I don't have a single injury doubt/suspension/player going to Africa in my entire squad, so can afford to hold onto my wildcard for as longer as possible, right up until week 24 when there's a significant swing in the fixtures for a few of the top teams.

      I really don't see the point of having Vorm and Moreira. I'm almost certain that the extra 0.5 you'd have to pay to get a better keeper who rotates well with Vorm, will be more than worth it in terms of the extra points you'd get.

      Also, I - as a Chelsea fan - don't expect Cahill to be first choice immediately, if ever, so I wouldn't go for him.

    Ok guys my steady rise up the rankings is continuing. Many thanks the all on here. Just a quick one this week. Do u think it's worth holding onto Royston? Is he likely to start? With a few yellows I'm tempted to lose him for Cabaye. The alternative is keep him and bring in a keeper for Westwood for a 1 week punt so I don't need to play Vorm v RVP.

    Cheers for any input!

      Also think that Drenthe will start at the weekend, and the thought from some of the Newcastle fans on here is that the appeal of Cabaye is reduced when Tiote is out of the side - as will be the case over the next few weeks. Apparently he plays deeper when alongside someone like Guthrie, which I guess makes sense considering Tiote is much more of a natural holding midfielder than any of their alternatives.

      If you've got Drenthe, I'd keep him for Villa (away) and then Blackburn (home). Surely he'll start both games and has the potential to score well, especially in the BLA game.

      As for the keeper dilemma, I'd just play Vorm. His form at home this season has been great.

    A) Silva -> Gerrard
    B) Ade -> Roon, Silva -> Valencia (-4p.)

          Initially he used to ask for advice & we used to take him seriously. But his real self showed up too soon, I guess. Now he's gone beyond the line of disgust. The others will be joining us soon in passing the execution of the sinner.

          The only thing going for him is that he is OOP. But I really wouldn't go for any Villa players. I've watched them full 90 minutes every game, and we never ever look like scoring, apart from the 1 off game vs Chelsea, so him being OOP isn't really that much of an advantage.

          Overall I'd prefer one of the Fulham lads, but yeah if it's just for the 1 week, I'd probably go Villa. I can see it being a 0-0 vs Everton or someone sneaking a 1 nil win. Can't see there being many goals. Neither team knows where the net is.

      I'd never have a 1 week punt in my WC draft. 2 weeks is the minimum.

      Vorm & Mignolet don't rotate. Try Kenny or Stockdale/Schwarzer. I don't fancy Kelly's nailed-on-ness - Senderos the way to go.

        Personally, I think if you're going to WC you need to do it early in the week to take advantage of the price changes, or at the very least get an idea which players are moving up/down and get them at the opportune time.

        eg. if you wanted Yakubu as your third striker, you'd be playing 6.1 for him now whereas earlier in the week he cost 5.9

        Reckon you've left it too late this round, might as well wait until next GW.

    So i Haven’t yet taken out Ba and i need to do so.
    I only have 1 free transfer and I can only chose players with the same or lower value and I don’t know who to pick..

    These are the 4 players that i would feel comfortable putting into my squad, but they all have their perks and disadvantages:

    Agbonlahor – 6.9 – EVE, wol, QPR
    Zamora – 6.6 – bla, NEW, WBA
    Yakubu – 6.1 – FUL, eve, NEW
    Helguson – 5.2 – new, WIG, avl

    Gabby, Bobby and The Yak all have 2 home games in their next 3, which is promising, but Helguson is alot cheaper than all 3, and i think that he’s got to be sure to score against Wigan at home. Although saying that, Helguson hasn’t been playing full matches lately, which is something that Agbonlahor and Yakubu have over him, both playing the full 90 minutes in their last 3 games. Saying that, Agbonlahor has been in awful form and has done nothing of mention lately.. So all the signs point to picking Yakubu, alas i feel that he has the toughest run in of all 4 of the players and he is also very popular as of late, which fails to give me a major differential, which I would like to have. Saying that, he is the player most in form and scored 2 goals against Manchester United, so tough opponents seem not to bother him.
    I really have a soft spot for Helguson, as i just have “that feeling” that he’s going to do something important for QPR over the next few weeks and he’s also selected by a very few amount of people, which i like. He’s also by far the cheapest of the four, so other areas of my team can be strengthened if need be.
    Yakubu seems like the obvious choice, but that’s a large part of why i don’t want to pick him. Also, he may run out of form as much as any of the other 3 may hit form. I basically have very little faith in him, which sounds harsh, but i just don’t.
    Zamora is a good striker, but before his goal at Arsenal, he only managed to play 6 minutes in the previous 5 games, which is disheartening.
    Agbonlahor has (i think) the easiest run of fixtures, but he’s been rather out of form. Saying that, we all know that he has the ability to absolutely breeze past defenses on his day, and Everton, Wolves and QPR hardly have the sturdiest defenses in the league. Something to keep in mind also is that if Aston Villa do sign Robbie Keane on loan, this must be bound to have an impact on Gabby’s playing time?

    Thankyou for reading my unnecessarily long essay and any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
