Watchlist

The Watchlist – Leighton Baines

Leighton Baines is like an expensive pair of jeans. You know the stitching, the cut and street-credibility are all better than the rest, but the price tag just seems that little bit too steep. Perhaps, you tell yourself, that pair from Primark isn’t that bad after all.

With a price tag of 7.8, the left-back is seen as a luxury that Fantasy managers can ill afford but, as Everton settle into the second half of the season in familiar resurgent fashion, Baines is starting to look worth every penny of his hefty price.

So what are Fantasy managers getting with Leighton Baines? First of all, starts are assured; last season he played every match, a feat he is set to once again achieve this term after failing to miss a single game. In terms of creativity, he notched up 11 assists in the previous campaign but, rather surprisingly, he has just two assists this time round, as Everton’s front men have too often failed convert his regular supply from the flank.

Instead, you are getting a considerable goal threat. Incredibly, for a defender, he is Everton’s top Premier League scorer with four goals to his name, just one less than his tally last season. Baines’ spot-kick duties, allied with his share of free kicks, have seen him notch some of the Premier League’s most spectacular goals in recent campaigns, most recently during Everton’s Gameweek 30 clash away to Swansea. His wonder free kick in last week’s win at the Liberty Stadium helped him accrue 15 points – a third double-digit haul of the season. Indeed, for defenders, only five-goal Thomas Vermaelen has proven more prolific in front of goal than the Toffees left-back.

Purchasers of Baines are also getting the added potential of clean sheets. An upturn in defensive performance has seen David Moyes’ side concede a single goal in their last four at home, snuffing out the likes of Chelsea, City and Tottenham. Further analysis of the stats shows Everton have conceded more than a single goal just three times since Gameweek 12 and, with a mere 32 goals against, have the fourth most impressive defensive record in the league to date.

With a favourable fixture list until the end of the season (WBA, nor, SUN,sto, man, FUL, wol, NEW) there is clear potential for Baines to increase his defensive returns, with perhaps only the trip to United in Gameweek 35 set to provide a stern test for Everton’s rearguard.

Bonus points also come with a Baines purchase. His bonus point tally of 15 is the highest of any defender in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. He also has the pedigree to avoid flagging at the end of the season. As Chris Glover’s recent Fantasy Football Scout article A Season Of Two Halves, showed there were only two top performers from the first half of the previous season who equalled and/or bettered their display as the season reached its end; Baines and City’s Joe Hart. With 124 points on the board, he may struggle to overhaul his 2010/11 total of 178 but he is, nonetheless, firmly on course to finish as the top scoring defender once again, currently sitting just one point behind Benoit Assou-Ekotto in the rankings.

With Everton in form and new boy Nikica Jelavic, in particular, looking capable of finding the net on a regular basis, Baines’ attacking output clearly has the potential to increase. There’s no doubt the Croatian’s keen eye for goal has already bolstered the Toffees frontline and, with someone of a more clinical nature converting his supply from out wide, Baines could be afforded plenty opportunity over the final couple of months to boost those paltry two assists.

Interesting match up this w/e - Barfa on the right wing against former team mate Enrique at left back. Who's gonna own who?...

Sure, but I'd imagine Enrique will know Barfa's trickery inside out from the toon. Would be typical of Liverpool to win this 2-0 after their recent terrible run when we all had them in!

Nah he doesn't know HBA at all. Apart from anything else he's spent the season transforming himself into the start-worthy workhorse that Pardew demanded.

Sod's law aside, the 2-0 really does look to be on the other foot this w/e.

You reckon this is worth a 4 pointer bearing in mind I'm chasing a 48 point lead (our teams are below)??

***Enrique, Surman & Suarez -> Cahill, Bale & P Cisse***

Me: Migs, Bogdan, Skrtel, JEvans, Enrique, Caulker, Shotton, Dempsey, Walcott, Valencia, Sigurdsson, Surman, RVP, Rooney, Suarez

      Mate, go for it.

Believe it or not I'm so fed up with my season that I'm contemplating a 12 point boom or bust hit this GW.

Thinking of going uber cheap on defence (Richards and Enrique out for Wilkinson and either Hibbert or McAuley), Surman out for Walcott and swapping one Cissé who is fond of red cards out for another Cissé who is fond of staying on the pitch and scoring.

At this point i care not for the points hit anymore. May as well go down trying, innit!

Haha, a successful 12 pointer would be awesome!!! Every chance it could happen and I'll be rooting for ya!! Also, if that comeback last w/e spurs on a QPR revival, that would be just amazing. You really need the likes of Bolton to fall apart now...

As for my team, I think I'm either doing:

        a) Enrique, Surman, Suarez -> Cahill, Bale, P Cisse (4 point hit), or
        b) Enrique & Shotton -> Vermaelen & Cahill (no hit)

        Whatcha reckon?!

Do the 4 pointer imo, Jins.

If we could just keep a flippin clean sheet we have a chance of staying up but defensively we are shambolic, so I don't hold out much hope for any revival.

Feel sorry for Hughes as he inherited a mess of a situation which Warnock had played his fair share in creating and has not been able to field the same back four let alone the same team twice in a row.

Yeah, I'm swaying that way. I need some differentials to catch him and this creates 2 more decent ones in Cahill and P Cisse. I'd probably have to bench Siggy this week if I do a) though right?

Yeah, I agree. A strike force of Zamora and Cisse is good enough to stay up, it's your defence that has been poor, in particular your CBs. Gabiddon is just, rubbish.

I could do an 8 pointer.

The 12 pointer would involve keeping Bale, but I am not averse to swapping him for Walcott as everyone ahead of me in my mini league has him and I need differentials now.

I think in the next few weeks maybe look to get some more Arsenal coverage in Walcott and Verm although next week probably not the best time to do it with Arsenal playing City, look to downgrade Suarez and upgrade McClean to Walcott if funds allow for this would be my advice, nice team though

Gonna ask the deadzoners as i get the most useful advice at this time.. team is
    Krul
    Skrtel Evans Kelly
    Valencia Dempsey Bale Siggy
    Rvp Rooney Ba

    Mignolet Mclean Enrique Caulker
4.6 in bank and 1 Free transfer
Obviously my main problems are Skrtel and Ba.. which option do i go for
    A)Skrtel to Baines
    B)Mclean to Walcott (Bench Siggy)
    C)Ba to Adebayor

Bear in mind that in 2 weeks i'll be doin Dempsey to Walcott if i choose option A/option C

CL Group E: Matchday 6 Preview

If there ever was a nail-biting finish to a group, this is it. Group E - one of the 2 groups in which all 4 teams are still in the race. We should have known this was on the cards - after all, this group boasted the first seed and the last seed of the tourney. Guess what - both are Saffers, who aren't chokers (cricket reference). This was followed by the historic moment in which the highest seeded manager in the tourney, Brian, chose to manage Racing Genk. No manager has been able to stamp his authority in the group. Agueroliciouso tried his best by employing the wildcard to good use but can he finish off his act? Chelsea went through a lot of turmoil with the board of directors' strategy to rotate the managers rather than the players. 3 spots up for grabs - all 4 managers still in the race. One of them will have to bow out.

For the record, here's how the group will be decided:
    1) Higher the points, higher the position.
    2) If 2 teams are tied on the same points, then it goes down to h2h record (win/loss)
    3) If the h2h record is the same, then it goes to Overall GD. If its still tied, then we go to away points scored in the matches between the tied teams.
    4) When 3 or more teams are tied on the same points, the Overall GD is taken into consideration.
    5) The group winner & runners-up qualify for the knock-outs and the 3rd spot qualifies for Round 2 of the Europa League.

Let's explore the qualification scenarios for Group E:

Leverkusen: An away win/draw against Genk should take them to the top of the group, barring a massive result for Valencia as well. A loss could make it tricky. In such a scenario, they will have to hope for a Valencia loss and themselves to lose by less than 5 points, in which case Chelsea and Leverkusen go through. If they lose by more than 5 points following a Valencia loss, then Chelsea & Genk go through, possibly leaving them with a Europa spot. A loss for Leverkusen & Chelsea will see them crash out of the CL due to Genk's superior h2h record of 2-0 over Leverkusen, leaving the overall GD to decide the Europa spot.

Valencia: An away win/draw against Chelsea would see them qualify to the knock-out stages. A loss against Chelsea and a result in the other game would see them crash out of the CL on inferior GD, making the Europa spot difficult to secure as well.

Chelsea: A home win against Valencia and a result in the other game should see them qualify to the knock-outs. A loss would see them fighting for the Europa spot hoping for a Genk loss.

Genk: A home win against Leverkusen might not be enough for qualification. They will then have to hope that Chelsea does not win against Valencia. A loss would see them fighting for the Europa spot, hoping for a Chelsea loss by a huge margin.

    Predictions:
Genk vs Leverkusen - With both managers expecting to line up very similar teams, the important clashes could be Ba/Silva vs Suarez/Surman. Verdict - A comfortable home win.

Chelsea vs Valencia - This clash is going to be a winner-takes-it-all. Chelsea has a Wildcard in tact, but a prior pact with Valencia prevents either manager to employ the Wildcard against each other. You would expect ethics and sportsmanship in a Chelsea manager to prevail. Once again, the important clash in this fixture could be down to Ba vs Suarez. Verdict - A narrow away win could be on the cards.

Who will have the last laugh? Destiny.

Just looked on the spreadsheet now. It's brilliant ENR! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, especially the AFCON reference 🙂

I echo what the others have said, thanks for all your hard work, it's been a great contest. (And how long did it take you to work out all those possible ways of qualifying? - I wouldnt know where to start)!!

Chokers shmokers. Only in the fixed world of cricket. How else would India win? 😉 Any news on who's been paid to lose the 20-20?

Nicely done ENR. Only thing you forgot is my 2FT 😉 I have a feeling therein lies my demise.

Thanks for all the great work, this has been greatly entertaining. I'll try lose by less than 5, you just beat Valencia.

When we likely to see the pp cup draw Friday I would imagine??? Would be useful for people to be able to see it earlier although this I know shouldn't influence people's transfer decisions unless nothing to play for

Well, other than Mark and Granville no one else knows any more than you do about it, do they.

Don't get people acting like somehow this site owes them an immediate answer to every whimsical question they feel the need to ask.

Enough with the sense of entitlement already!

out of curiosity.. who you gonna bench on a weekly basis? for eg this week you have 13 class outfield playes all with good fixtures

This week I was going to play either 5-3-2 with Ben Arfa, Siggy and Graham on the bench or bring in Ben Arfa for Cahill and play 4-4-2

I just feel the tide has turned with great value to be had in the attacking defenders and just a reliable cheap striker in an emergency

But this week he has a great fixture and home fixtures are OK till the end. Still not sure about Walcott. I can bench Demps in a few weeks.

Planning on playing 5-3-2 most weeks

        Anyone any suggestions?

I'm keeping it on Rooney this GW as I'm pretty sure everyone in my mini league will captain RVP.

I need differentials now so have to hope Rooney outscores RVP and soften the impact by getting Song or Walcott.
