Watchlist

The Watchlist – Leighton Baines

Leighton Baines is like an expensive pair of jeans. You know the stitching, the cut and street-credibility are all better than the rest, but the price tag just seems that little bit too steep. Perhaps, you tell yourself, that pair from Primark isn’t that bad after all.

With a price tag of 7.8, the left-back is seen as a luxury that Fantasy managers can ill afford but, as Everton settle into the second half of the season in familiar resurgent fashion, Baines is starting to look worth every penny of his hefty price.

So what are Fantasy managers getting with Leighton Baines? First of all, starts are assured; last season he played every match, a feat he is set to once again achieve this term after failing to miss a single game. In terms of creativity, he notched up 11 assists in the previous campaign but, rather surprisingly, he has just two assists this time round, as Everton’s front men have too often failed convert his regular supply from the flank.

Instead, you are getting a considerable goal threat. Incredibly, for a defender, he is Everton’s top Premier League scorer with four goals to his name, just one less than his tally last season. Baines’ spot-kick duties, allied with his share of free kicks, have seen him notch some of the Premier League’s most spectacular goals in recent campaigns, most recently during Everton’s Gameweek 30 clash away to Swansea. His wonder free kick in last week’s win at the Liberty Stadium helped him accrue 15 points – a third double-digit haul of the season. Indeed, for defenders, only five-goal Thomas Vermaelen has proven more prolific in front of goal than the Toffees left-back.

Purchasers of Baines are also getting the added potential of clean sheets. An upturn in defensive performance has seen David Moyes’ side concede a single goal in their last four at home, snuffing out the likes of Chelsea, City and Tottenham. Further analysis of the stats shows Everton have conceded more than a single goal just three times since Gameweek 12 and, with a mere 32 goals against, have the fourth most impressive defensive record in the league to date.

With a favourable fixture list until the end of the season (WBA, nor, SUN,sto, man, FUL, wol, NEW) there is clear potential for Baines to increase his defensive returns, with perhaps only the trip to United in Gameweek 35 set to provide a stern test for Everton’s rearguard.

Bonus points also come with a Baines purchase. His bonus point tally of 15 is the highest of any defender in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. He also has the pedigree to avoid flagging at the end of the season. As Chris Glover’s recent Fantasy Football Scout article A Season Of Two Halves, showed there were only two top performers from the first half of the previous season who equalled and/or bettered their display as the season reached its end; Baines and City’s Joe Hart. With 124 points on the board, he may struggle to overhaul his 2010/11 total of 178 but he is, nonetheless, firmly on course to finish as the top scoring defender once again, currently sitting just one point behind Benoit Assou-Ekotto in the rankings.

With Everton in form and new boy Nikica Jelavic, in particular, looking capable of finding the net on a regular basis, Baines’ attacking output clearly has the potential to increase. There’s no doubt the Croatian’s keen eye for goal has already bolstered the Toffees frontline and, with someone of a more clinical nature converting his supply from out wide, Baines could be afforded plenty opportunity over the final couple of months to boost those paltry two assists.

Too much hassle deleting teams from the league, I'll put it back to a classic league as it was before. Current rank is for all the entrants, qualified or not for GW30. Thought it would help me with working out winners but didn't need it. You are welcome to stay. See if you can finish above your seeding come GW38.

It's just that I've become rather fond of all the low numbers in the right hand column in recent weeks, and that paltry 191 is just a big gravy stain... however...

    Rest of the season transfer:

    A) Graham > Yakubu
    B) " " > Jelavic
    C) " " > Pog

Yakubu and Jelavic seem to have pretty similar fixtures (in terms of difficulty), but Everton are just coming into form.. while Blackburn are going to be fighting to stay above relegation..

Leaning towards Yak. He can score 2, OR double digits!

Really appreciate any thoughts. Have I forgot a 4th option perchance?

Big fear for me about Jelavic are that Everton are just now starting to show form, so I'm worried it won't last.

Blackburn fluctuate, but can usually net a few

That's what I've done especially since I don't have Bale yet I thought it prudent. I was all set to sell Clichy for Baines and then I thought, "It's 8 million for an Everton defender!" and chickened out.

Re-post. Current team with 2FT & 0.0m in the bank:

    Krul, Mignolet
    Evans, Luiz, Simpson, Caulker, Enrique
    Bale, Walcott, Valencia, Sigurdsson, Miyaichi
    RVP, Rooney, Holt

Considering a 4pt hit to do Luiz, Enrique, Holt out for Cahill, Walker, Jelavic. Good moves? Can’t stretch to BAE unfortunately. Or would Sagna be a better option than Walker?

My other option is to go uber-cheap at the back and do Enrique, Luiz, Holt out for Wilkinson, Kelly, Adebayor.

That's true I suppose, but Spurs have to win this one if they are to challenge for 3rd and keep Chelsea off their backs. Also I think Swansea will really miss Caulker at the back and Parker is just the man to keep Siggy quiet. Against Fulham it would've been Danny Murphy I think (i.e. not so good)...

Yeah I'm similar actually. Assuming I beat BonZ I will likely finish with the highest points differential. It comes down to small things in games as well. Megotron beat me twice as a result of that last minute Suarez assist in the DGW and because I benched Siggy when he got that brace. Such things are the difference between winning and losing

Yeah, I like the idea of Cahill as I don't have that many players from teams with blanks in GW34, so would like to get a couple of those in with potential DGWs coming up. Sounds like Chelsea have the best chance, so Cahill now, benched for 34 and then him and Mata for the DGW (with perhaps Barfa and Cisse too) is probably the way i'll go.

Main downside with Pog is that I'll only play him this week (next week Pog (bol) probably falls to the bench behind this lot). Or would you start him over any of them?

Walcott (MCY), Dempsey (bol), Valencia (QPR), Siggy (NEW)
RVP (MCY), Rooney (QPR), Suarez (AVL)

Dempsey & Skrtel -> Kaboul & Bale in GW33 is the likely move if I do Enrique/Shotton -> Cahill/Verm this week, and the Spurs GW34 goes ahead. Plan?

Cheers, yeah I'm swaying that way now. You think it's worth losing Skrtel instead of Jose so that I have a little extra in the bank? If i end up sticking to the GW33 plan then I guess it makes no difference...

        Vorm

        Evans, Verm, Kompany

        Valencia, Siggy, Silva, Bale

        Roo, Cisse, RVP

        subs Migs, Kelly, McClean, Simpson

both siggy and McC are away, or should i take a chance with Kelly?

I'd play Kelly. Fulham looked good against United and Holt won't be playing. If anything it might be a choice between Evans and Siggy because Blackburn always score. Really tough choice though. I'm favoring the bench Siggy option for now

Im pretty keen to get Rooney into my team, probably for Suarez, trouble is i already have 3 united players, should i transfer someone out to get him, or use my cash elsewhere?

    Vorm (Bogdan)
    Richards, Cahill, Evans, Stanton, Caulker
    Gerrard, Young, Valencia, Mclean, Dyer
    RVP, Suarez, Ba

Sounds decent. Mrs China Mag is thinking of rotating Dempsey with McClean. That gives NOR, bol, CHE, WOL, WIG, BOL, SUN, (then bench both or transfer one for last game. I like the idea of rotating reasonably heavy hitters, because it gives an obvious bench option every week. My own team is going to have a nightmare deciding on who to bench.

It all comes down to VDV doesn't it? He could well be a key differential for the run in. If I knew he was secure in the spot supporting adebayor for their easy run in, I would be on him like a shot. I'm just worried saha will see some of his playing time. I like the jelavic move, especially if you plan to rotate him with dempsey. However, if I was you, I might look to a barfa adebayor combo instead of VDV jelavic. But then i'm biased!

I've written many a post on the ben arfa situation, i'm sure people on here are getting bored of it. He has more than earned a good run in the team. As well as the flair stuff and awesome fantasy points, he's been putting in much more of a shift, and being less greedy. Pardew even complained that he worked too hard defensively against norwich!

He is still prone to trying to play it out of defence too much. So if he costs us a few goals doing that, he might be back on the bench. But for now he is in. And while he is getting a run in the team, he should be in EVERYONES team! Everyone here that is, hopefully not in too many of my mini league teams!

          1) Strikers are capable of scoring anytime (home or away, easy or tough games). Take Jelavic - you wouldn't have played him for both his goals - TOT (H) or swa (A). Not many strikers you'll find who're strong only at home (only Aguero comes to mind). Mids are more predictable in their returns - take McClean, Dempsey, Mata, etc. All strong at home.

          2) Strikers when on form can rake in big points. Hence, it's impt to chose a striker on-form and give them a good run in the playing 11.

I agree, that by rotating a striker, you are likely to have plenty of points on your bench over the season, which will make you cry. But the game is all about how many points the team you pick gets, not the players on your bench.

Remember, I don't look at rotation as in home and away. I play the opposition (of course home/away is a factor when the opposition are of similar quality). A striker playing a rubbish defence is more likely to score more than a mid or striker playing a solid defence. Simple.

Hey, FPL will have done their homework. Striker spots come at a premium (only 3 spots). You have 5 mids and 5 defs for a reason 😉

I think rotating a mid/mid or mid/fwd is a good strategy. You would only do this with your 3rd striker. Its all about finding the prime rotations. Its very rare that one teams run of good fixtures (matched with a bench sitter), is better than two players rotating.

        - With Sess back McClean will start producing the goods more regularly.
        - Yeah I know
        - So long as HBA continues with his form there is no way he will be dropped from the starting team. 75mins is all he needs to weave his magic

Sunderland have mci TOT eve in the next three, McClean probably won't get much there.
Everybody has cash to spend anyway, so why not go for say Walcott over one of HBA/McClean anyway, who would they be saving money for? Silva, Aguero? Nani? All the expensive players are flops at the moment.

There's no point having plenty of spare cash waiting for someone (who has not even played over a half of football since GW3 or something ridiculous) when you can spend it on players scoring points.
If Tevez begins starting regularly, then all it takes is 2 transfers to get him in.

Transfers are a premium so if you can do so with careful planning then that's fine. Obviously it is better to not have cash sitting in you bank but you can do it in such a way as to do it in two transfers as you say. It depends how you manage it. I will likely save 2FT's so that I don't have to downgrade for a week adding the cash left behind to the kitty

More often than not, any forwards rotation plan will be undermined by things like team form, player form, opponent defensive form, key players missing, rotation threats, injury threats, or a combination of several of these. Personally I am more comfortable with just picking the best 8 I can have together with a decent defence, and deciding from week to week who I am benching. And if I for some reason find myself with too many good options, that is a good thing Shirley.

Not sold on either Simpson or on Miyaichi, but Newcastle clearly better than Bolton, and VDV vs Baines not clearly a winner in either direction, so probably A.

Everyone should aim to get this forward midfield line

Bale, Valencia, Siggy, B Arfa, McClean
    RVP, Rooney, Tevez

These are the form players and I'm assuming Tevez is going to be the 'dog' that will be unleashed to help Citeh compete for the title.

Nothing is for certain really. I guess I'm somewhat banking on Tevez to get a good run in the team. The alternative is to get someone like Walcott in midfield and have a cheaper striker.

The thing is I wouldn't get Tevez yet, however I will keep an eye on him and make sure I don't maneuver myself out of a position to get him in.

Do we think Barfa is now nailed on? If so, presumably on the right wing with Cisse & Ba up top?

Now toying between these 3 moves this week - best option?

    a) Surman & Enrique -> Barfa & Verm (benching Siggy)
    b) Shotton & Enrique -> Cahill & Verm (benching Skrtel)
    c) Surman & Suarez -> Bale & Pog (benching Siggy)

Maybe, few things I don't like about it though:

              1) 4 point hit
              2) Losing Suarez - expect him to do ok in the next 3 (new, AVL, bla)
              3) Substitution nightmare in front 7 going forwards (Bale, Walcott, Dempsey, Siggy, Valencia, RVP, Rooney, Cisse)

Gonna ask the deadzoners as i get the most useful advice at this time.. team is
    Krul
    Skrtel Evans Kelly
    Valencia Dempsey Bale Siggy
    Rvp Rooney Ba

    Mignolet Mclean Enrique Caulker
4.6 in bank and 1 Free transfer
Obviously my main problems are Skrtel and Ba.. which option do i go for
    A)Skrtel to Baines
    B)Mclean to Walcott (Bench Siggy)
    C)Ba to Adebayor/Aguero/Tevez(???)

Dont mind startin ba this week cause imo he could easily get a goal.. dont mind startin siggy too.. i cant see anythin but a set piece header for skrtel this week so leanin towards A.. also i'll be doin dempsey to walcott in 2 weeks with A and C so B) looks kinda wrong takin Mclean out

            QPR NEW liv BLA

Nothing to lose imo, with those fixtures. I'd prolly go Lamps Cole Cech

Think Mata would be best of that bunch, with 3 out of 4 home games.
I've gone off any keeper above 5.0, it only ends in tears and frustration.
