Euro 2012

Euro 2012 Team Analysis – Greece

Yesterday saw our coverage of the upcoming Euro 2012 tournament in Poland and Ukraine get under way with a look at the Czech Republic’s Fantasy prospects. Staying with Group A, then, it’s time to bring Euro 2004 champions Greece under the microscope:

Fernando Santos’ side are pitted against Poland in the tournament opener, kicking off at 5pm on Friday June 8. They continue their campaign four days later by squaring up to the Czech Republic at 5pm before facing Russia in their final group match on Saturday June 16 at 7.45pm.

Any one of the four countries involved in Group A look to have a chance of finishing in the top two. The Czech Republic secured their place in this summer’s tournament with a play-off win against Montenegro after finishing second in qualifying behind Spain, Russia grabbed top spot in their group at the expense of the Republic of Ireland, while Poland take their place as co-hosts, and will be buoyed by the backing of the home crowd.

The Road to Qualification

Greece were amongst the automatic qualifiers, finishing top of their group ahead of Croatia – seven wins and three draws saw Santos’ men unbeaten over their 10 games. Their solid defence shipped a mere five goals and, with five clean sheets also throw in (two at home and three on the road) they never conceded more than a single goal in any game. They lacked any real cutting edge, however, scoring just 14 goals, and netted more than once away from home on just a single occasion – their must-win final match away to Georgia bringing a 2-1 victory.

Most Appearances: Karagounis & Salpigidis (10), Katsouranis (9), Samaras & Papastathopoulos (8)

Top Scorers: K Papadopoulos, Torisidis, Fetfatzidis (all 2 goals)

Top Assists: Katsouranis (3)

The Likely Lads

Kyriakos Papadopoulos wasn’t selected for the first half of Greece’s qualifying matches but, handed a chance in four of their last five, was a hugely significant figure. The 19 year old netted twice, with goals against Latvia and Malta crucial to his country’s progression and his adaptability means he is capable of playing in central defence or as a holding midfielder within Santos’ preferred 4-3-3 system. His price of 4.5 looks enticing, particularly when compared with the likes of right-back Vasilis Torisidis, who is a full 1.0 more expensive. Papadopoulos was a pivotal figure in Schalke’s recent third place finish in the Bundesliga and could benefit from the recovered balls rule: he was amongst the top four defenders for tackles, interceptions, clearances and aerial duels won in Germany’s top-flight for the 2011/12. For those unconvinced he is 100% nailed-on, the upcoming friendlies against Slovenia and Armenia towards the end of May should give us a more definite answer.

One of only two players to feature in every qualifier, the experience of Giorgos Karagounis on the left of the midfield three will be vital. Although Santos is determined to instill a more youthful vibrancy to the side, the 35 year old still has a part to play and, with free-kicks and corners (shared with Kostas Katsouranis) in his locker, it’s no surprise to see Karagounis the most expensive option from the Greek squad – costing 6.0, though, he’s still relatively light on the budget.

Fanis Gekas looks likely to be the lone forward and arrives in strong form. He played the first half of last season for Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring seven goals in 14 appearances, before a winter move to Samsunspor. His time at the Turkish club has proved fruitful, with Gekas producing eight goals and a couple of assists in just 11 appearances. Priced at just 5.5, and with spot-kick duties in the bag, Gekas looks a decent differential, with 0.9% of Fantasy managers currently snapping up his services.

Cheeky Punt

Nicknamed the Greek Messi, Sotiris Ninis has plenty to live up to. The 22 year old has seen much of his season curtailed by injury and flew under the radar as a result, with not a single appearance over the qualifying program. Snapped up by Parma in March for next term’s Serie A campaign, the highly rated winger was expected to play on the right of the midfield three, though in today’s announcement of the provisional squad, Santos revealed he sees Ninis as more of an attacking option, putting Fantasy managers on alert. Priced as a 5.5 midfielder, he could well be an out-of-position proposition, with just 1.7% ownership thus far.

Given their strong defensive showings in qualifying, a cut-price Greek keeper could be an inspired move and today’s squad announcement had a couple of surprises, with Dionisis Chiotis missing out. While both Michalis Sifakis and Alexandros Tzorvas (priced at 4.0, he is currently the most popular pick with 7.2% ownership) have made the cut, Santos sprung a surprise by hinting Kostas Chalkias could be his number one – the PAOK man has yet to be included in the McDonalds game. With questions still unanswered over the first choice keeper, those upcoming friendlies will be keenly analysed by Fantasy managers – it may well be an unnecessary risk if the situation isn’t any clearer ahead of the Poland game.

Santos gave Fantasy managers an early warning of his intentions to rotate earlier today, however, going on to say he will select players who:

can better adapt to the opponent. In a tournament with matches every four days, you will probably require changes in every match.

actually no. I actually had him in a early draft team, heard about him a couple of years back as a decent prospect (that's what Football Manager does for ya), just wasn't sure if he was nailed on.

With how the McDonalds dream team rules work, if I started both a Polish and Greek defender playing on Day 1 in GW1, Poland kept a clean sheet and battered Greece 5-0, would I then be able to take out the Greek defender, even though he played, and swap him with say a Dutch defender that was playing on Day 2?

yup that is correct, you can swap out any player who has played for one who hasn't, but always be warned, if a player has a reasonable haul swapping is a risk as those points are gone. Same goes for captaincy choice.

I'm bored so just to generate discussion....

This is a rating out of 10 for each of the likely first team members in the England Squad.

    Rating system key:

1 – Think Championship level i.e David Nugent
10 – Think World Class player i.e Messi / Aguero / Ronaldo / Pique. I know only two of those is European.

Joe Hart – 8 A solid and most obvious pick.
Ashley Cole – 7½ Again a solid pick proven at the highest levels but is a fading force.
Glen Johnson – 5 Glen who? He plays for Liverpool? Didn’t they come 7th in the prem? OH NO!!!!!
John Terry –  7 A good pick if losing it a little these days.
    Lescott – 6 Mehhhh.

Young – 7 He’s still developing and needs to improve his end product but a solid player.
Gerrard – 6 A fading force. He’s captain though so may turn into a 7.
Lampard – 6 See above but without the captain bonus. Doesn’t play well with Gerrard. Literally how many times does this need to be proven.
Walcott – 6 ½ Improving but clearly still not the finished article.

    (First two games)
Andy Carrol – 5 He’s a striker who doesn’t score but is over 6ft so an automatic pick because of our wingers. He plays for Liverpool? Didn’t they come 7th in the prem? OH NO!!!!!
Welbeck – 6 Great if he’s playing in a good team. This is not one of those times.

Rooney – 9 The one bright spark in the team, however will inevitably be dragged down to a 7 by the incompetence that surrounds him.

Prediction – Narrowly knocked out at group phase or a quarter final place at best.

Nice post. Disagree with some of those though, I'd have to give Rooney a 10, Welbeck should perform at about 8, maybe 7, Young is an 8 maybe even 9 on his day, Hart 9, Cole 9, Terry 9, Walcott 6/5.5. The main thing with this is, I think a number of the players are as good as any in the world, I don't really think there are any keepers clearly better than hart and same goes for Terry and Cole, particularly Cole. I think Rooney can almost be consider in the same league as Messi and certainly Ronaldo because he overall play is incredible, the season apart from some off performances his style of play was fantastic. Carrick should have been in the squad because he should have been given a chance at first 11.

Walcott is as good as, if not better than, Young for a start.
Cole is not what he used to be.
I think Rooney is 'world class' but he's a level down from Ronaldo and Messi - he's a 10 and they are 12s.

I've been re-reading the rules carefully, and it seems like defenders could be the way to go.

The recovered balls stat gives extra points, and the lack of bonus points means strikers are also up against it. They have to score in order to be even level with their defensive counterparts keeping a clean sheet.

    This isn't FPL.

Yeah well these guys will be starters and as noticed even defensive mids can have decent weeks. To each their own strategy, for me it will be big guns in front, as most of the best players have been made forwards. Have 2 high priced mids and 1 6-7 punt. And a good defense.

Of course not but have you've got dirt-cheap options in there who will actually play? Also, Mikel, Alaba and Busquets regularly offered several recovered balls.

All Defensive mids did, currently I have Andrews and Polanski. I like this strategy simply because I think Sneijder and Ozil are must haves and I dont really like any of the cheap mid options, besides Larsson/ Källström or yarmolenko for the first week.

Yes, it's just like fantasy UCL. It's really not that complicated. Simply put: defensive midfielders are not completely worthless now and the divide between defenders and attackers is lessened as you point out why. It's not a completely game-changing difference, mind. It just makes scores that little bit more respectable in later rounds when goals, assists, clean sheets and the like dry up simply because there are less matches.

All players can recover balls and get these extra points not just defenders. At the end of your gameweek you're probably better off with 2 defenders, 5 attacking midfielders and 3 forwards. Attack minded players tend to get the best points. Going with 3 or 4 defenders your hoping for cleansheets, a lot of recovered balls and assists or goals. Not many attack minded defenders, I'm hoping Zhirkov will be one of them!

Regardless of how good or bad I reckon you should put the players starting on the first days in your first 11. If they do great leave them in. If they perform badly use your manager's substitutions to make changes after the first day and so on.

I've heard the Drogba rumours but that's all they are at the moment. I'm not sure if he'd go there after *that* semi-final thought he's surely over that by now. I would not put it past Barcelona to be interested considering how they have no plan B attacking-wise, something that has been lacking since Ibrahimovic's departure. However, if they persist with Messi playing through the middle then Drogba may be a no-go.

Ibrahimovic costs too much and Sweden very unlikely to come out of their group. Llorente is quality but not sure if he will play much particularly if Villa is match fit. Don't know much about Lewandowksi but Poland could well split Czech Republic and Russia when the home fans get behind them. What about Jelavic? Bargain price and could swap him fror Imramovic and spread the wealth elsewhere.

Even so, I'm tempted by the 8/1 on offer for Brendan Rodgers to be the next Liverpool manager. Liverpool have an awful lot of ground to make up and perhaps their owners might be reasoning that they could possibly do this by stealing a march on the rest by embracing his football philosophy first? Rodgers will be fresh in their minds as well after beating them just 4 days ago.

He is more proven than Martinez, I think given the time and money avb will go well. His signing of mata was one of the best signings of the season. He has more connections in Europe to hopefully attract good players. I like Martinez but not for me over the two of us.

More proven than Martinez? Martinez managed a championship side then a Premier League side that flirted with relegation each season he was in charge. A side that only showed what they can do with a third of the season remaining and could have done a lot better with a better manager.

Mata was a great signing granted but unless AVB learned from his mistakes at Chelsea he won't make it in the Premier League. I honestly think that he'd automatically lose the respect of some narrow-minded senior players because he never played at a top level which isn't right. I honestly think that's a lot of the reason he lost most of the Chelsea dressing room.

Hopefully they won't ask Rafa "eight defensive players against Portsmouth" back.

KLopp is a good candidate but has it great at Dortmund right now. Would like to see Di Matteo get the job. Allegedly Abramovich has Capello lined up.
