Euro 2012

Euro 2012 Team Analysis – Denmark

Having completed our Group A analysis over the last four days, the Euro 2012 coverage shifts focus this afternoon. Next up, it’s Group B under the microscope, as we get the ball rolling with a look at Denmark…

Morten Olsen’s men get their campaign underway on Saturday June 9 at 5pm, in the group’s opening game against the Netherlands. The Danes have a four-day wait under their second fixture – once again, they kick off early, with a 5pm showdown against Portugal, before their final match at 7.45pm on Sunday June 17 against Germany.

There’s little doubt that Denmark are the rank outsiders to progress from Group B. Germany won all 10 of their qualifying games, racking up 34 goals in the process, Holland were victorious in nine of their 10 matches and notched 37 times, while Portugal – after finishing second to the Danes in qualifying – hammered Bosnia-Herzegovina 6-2 on aggregate in the play-offs.

The Road to Qualification

Placed in a five-team group in qualifying, Denmark won six and lost just one of their eight matches. After a tricky start – where they were victorious in just one of their opening four – Olsen’s side won the last four and showed their resolve with a 2-1 triumph in the winner-takes-all final match against the Portuguese, ensuring automatic qualification. Olsen’s side conceded six goals, with four clean sheets chalked up along the way, and found the net 15 times – scoring two or more goals on five of those eight occasions.

Most Appearances: Jacobsen, Rommedahl, Eriksen (8), Krohn-Deli, C Poulsen, Kjaer (7)

Top Scorers: Bendtner, Rommedahl (3), Krohn-Deli (2)

Top Assists: Rommedahl (5)

The Likely Lads

Priced at 6.5, Christian Eriksen’s role as the most advanced central midfielder in a 4-3-3 allows his playmaking abilities to flourish. The Ajax man pretty much monopolises set-pieces, as the number one for both corners and free-kicks, and is already the most popular Danish attacking asset, with 10.5% ownership. He arrives on the back of a strong domestic campaign for the Dutch champions, with seven goals and 18 assists steering his side to the Eredevisie title – if Denmark are to beat the odds and progress beyond the group stages, Eriksen’s contribution will be crucial.

Joint-top scorer in qualifying with three goals and the provider of most assists, Dennis Rommedahl makes a strong case for inclusion. The Brondby man currently has a thigh injury but has been included in the provisional squad, with Olsen quoted as being certain the winger “will be ready”. Priced at a mere 5.5 and classified as a forward, Rommedahl – who plays on the right of the front three – is an alternative for those Fantasy managers reluctant to invest much budget in the Danes, given their relatively weak fixtures.

The much-maligned Nicklas Bendtner may struggle to justify his extreme self-confidence on the domestic stage but has a knack of producing at international level. Priced at 7.0 he’s unlikely to attract too much interest – at present, Bendtner has just 1.3% ownership in the McDonalds game – but, with three goals in the Danes’ last four, including a crucial strike in the final group match against Portugal, Olsen’s preferred lone frontman arrives in strong form for the Group B underdogs.

Cheeky Punt

Realistically, it’s hard to justify any sort of investment in the Danish defence. Up against the likes of Robin Van Persie, Cristiano Ronaldo and Mario Gomez in consecutive matches, few, if any, have faith in clean sheets. Daniel Agger has already attracted the most interest of any Danish outfield player, with an ownership of 14.2% but a price tag of 5.5 looks steep, despite his occasional free-kicks. For anyone considering an admittedly risky punt on the backline, 4.5 priced Thomas Sorensen offers a cut-price option. With plenty of save points likely to be accrued, in addition to his reputation for keeping out spot-kicks, the Stoke man should be kept busy from start to finish – the back-four will likely need to return attacking points to outscore him. For those who reckon Anders Lindegaard could oust Sorensen as first-choice keeper, the upcoming couple of friendlies against Brazil and Australia should hopefully reveal all – priced at 4.0, Lindegaard certainly offers even better value and has been snapped up by an incredible 30% of Fantasy managers already.

Likely to play wide left in the front three but classified as a midfielder, Michael Krohn-Deli is an out-of-position prospect afforded to Fantasy managers. Priced at 6.0, he has been picked up by a mere 0.3%; Eriksen is clearly the midfielder of choice here but Krohn-Deli’s slightly cheaper price, backed up by a record of three goals in his last five, suggests he could appeal to those seeking a real differential amongst Olsen’s squad.

Your team is really heavily stacked on the first day which means you will always only do mediocre (The teams play each other!)

Not a huge fan of Llorente, but everything else is solid. Double Germany could be fantastic.

Euro FF is in favor of defenses more than attack. You'd be lucky to have more than half your front 8 do something per gameweek, which means you'll be wanting those clean sheets.

Yeah it's possible. But you have Lewandowski and Dzagoev too so one of them will probably fire a blank if it's 0-0.

I'd lose Dzagoev personally. Russians not that attacking, and for 7.5, you can get someone better.

These links about Hazard joining United is untrue. He will decide after he has talks.

Personally, I think Hazard should go Chelsea as he'll get first team footy week in-week out. A strikeforce of Mata---Torres---Hazard is good enough to win the league.
On the other hand, Utd should opt for Kagawa (Not Park 😉 ) as they're packed with wingers as it is. Valencia--Kagawa--Nani/Young seems threatening.
And as for City, just buy Messi, Ronaldo, Heskey and Co.

Very much doubt Spurs would sell us Modric, especially after what happened with Berbatov, but he'd be an ideal Scholes replacement.

in england im 35 years old now, in the states im still 34 for a few more minutes. gutted about my spurs. really a painful way to end what was once a promising season.

So my birthday wish is for someone to tell me whos the cheapest two keepers are in Euro, nailed on or damn near, and not in the same group. Heres my current squad which im sure will be either generic or a mess.

    Hart, Cech

    Papadopoulos, Jodlowiec, Strinic, Olsson, Kucher

    Ozil, Sneijder, Iniesta, Mandzukic, Ninis

    Van Persie, Ibrahimovic, Lewandowski

im thinking hart/cech could be worth the money while going super cheap in the back. for keepers, with only two choices, i want to make sure i have a good one for the gw. whereas with defenders, and only needing to start 2 if need be (though im inclined to start 3) having to pick 2 or 3 from 5 presents me more potemtial cs opportunities, albeit from weaker options. i think the 5 i have are all thought to be in the first team and represent 3 of the groups. of course this means no group B, unless anyone can throw out a non Dane whos cheap? Thoughts otherwise?

Cheapest starting keepers are Tzorvas (pretty sure to start if not then Chalkias), Isaksson and Given.

Not a fan of Van Persie for the Dutch. He could play on the wing/be rotated with Huntelaar.

Defense is a bit of a mess imo. Ukraine defense isn't ideal cause they play last day. Strinic won't play, and Jodlowiec mightn't either.

      Like the midfield though!

Foley won't play 1min. Pick another defender who if needed will get you a point or two. You can do bettter than Nasri for that price. Robben, never liked him, a diver, but a great player. Shouldn't be classed as a striker but will get you assists and the odd goal. Still think you'd be better downgrading Robben for a more prolific striker.

Andrews is a certain starter. Decent strike of the ball too, might get you a goal. Keep an eye on James McClean's price when FF put him in. Seems a good bet to start against Croatia and if he does Trap will signal some much needed attacking intent. McClean is qualty and I expect his price to be about 6m. will do well against any opposition.

Doubt very much McClean will start? Will probably be Duff and McGeady on the wings and dont see why he would change. Trap doesnt like making changes unless he has to, unfortunately. Agree about Andrews, might score you a goal and cheap as chips.

He will. Trap needs to have some attacking intent to have any chance of getting out of the group. Listening to Off The Ball it seems more likely than not that McClean will start probably ahead of Duff. I could never see the attraction with McGeady myself? If not a starter McClean will play as a sub against Croatia. Should impress then and start the next two and who knows after that!!!

Defence: I'm bypassing Czechs as they won't keep cleenies. Russians look the best bet in Group A. Greeks and Poles next best.

        What formation are you playing?

The Manager has hinted that another Greek God is actually his no 1 keeper....not on Maccy D team sheet yet...

Tsorvas was in my team from day one, but i've taken him out. Not so sure he is a starter. Will have to monitor the friendlies. Problem with Poles are they did not play any QF's so no idea who is who and doing what... 😕

Formation? Is that even relevant in a Maccy D's tournament? It all depends on who scores the most points. If I have 4 Cs's after day 1, then I'm banking them all!

            Greedy so and so 😉

Someone mentioned you can play 2-5-3. Not sure if defs are going to score more than mids/fwds as others are hinting. Seem to remember that defs are still the lowest scorers in the game.

Yeah, you can get away with 2 at the back minimum. At the moment I have4 def playing each other on day 1 so all or nothing for me.

Unknown formation! Starting with my players playing on June 8th and others. That night will use managers substitutions to swap out players and captain if needed. Doing the same every night so depends on how players do per day.

You can go with a 2-5-3 formation and let automatic substitutions change your players at end of the matchday (Should be match stage?).
