Hazard Announces Chelsea Move

Eden Hazard has won few friends with the constant cryptic whispers and teasing rumours surrounding his future. The Belgian has led a dubious campaign that, mercifully, appears to have reached its climax with tonight’s latest social media snippet. Hazard’s official Twitter feed has this evening all but confirmed that he has signed a deal with Chelsea, seemingly ending months of speculation and perhaps finally killing off suggestions that he was Manchester bound.

Tonight’s tweet reads…

“I’m signing for the champion’s league winner.”

This follows the earlier release that indicated that a decision had been made…

“good afternoon guys. i made up my mind. see you later. Thanks”

While it’s perhaps premature to take these statements as confirmation, the press has immediately jumped on the news and proclaimed that he is set for Stamford Bridge.

There’s no question that Hazard is one of Europe’s hottest properties and, this potential deal could well be the biggest and most significant involving a Premier League club this summer. With both Manchester clubs thought to be locked in a struggle to seal his signature, Chelsea would have succeeded in pulling off a major coup should the deal be finalised.

Confirmation of the transfer from Stamford Bridge will surely be expected in the next 24-hours with his new club no doubt already somewhat perturbed by the player’s revelations this evening.

While few will be impressed with his conduct off the field, we may all be shelving those feelings when it comes to next season’s Fantasy campaign. Hazard brings with him a superb record from Ligue 1 Lille, not least last term’s statistics that show 20 goals and 16 assists in 35 league starts. Not surprisingly, Hazard was Ligue 1’s player of the season – a campaign which provided the catalyst for this summer’s scramble and Hazard’s ego getting the better of him.

Unlike Nicklas Bendtner, Hazard clearly has a record to back his over active PR machine. A potent goalscorer, with strong creativity, a set-piece threat who will likely earn midfield classification – Hazard is loaded with Fantasy potential.

We’ll bring you a full Scout Report on Hazard, discussing his talents and the impact on Chelsea’s squad should his move from Lille be confirmed.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Haven't done one of these in a while due to personal reasons, but here's my thoughts on the Croats 🙂 Any opinions very much welcome

    THE DEFENCE

Croatia’s first game of the tournament is, on paper, their easiest. They face the Republic of Ireland in Poznan, a side who don’t boast a wealth of attacking flair. This being said, it is a surprise that only 3% of managers have opted for the services of goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa. The FC Rostov stopper is available for 5.0 million and has kept 5 clean sheets in his last 10 games so looks a pretty appealing prospect, especially for those planning on wildcarding after the first round of games.

When it comes to defenders, there seems to be some good choice amongst the Croatian ranks. If money is no object, then 5.5 million Vedran Corluka looks to be the best option. Corluka has scored 2 goals in his last 3 international appearances and is nailed on to start their first group game. Without a doubt, he is Croatia’s best expensive option at the back.

However, many will be reluctant to invest much money in the Croatian defence, which makes Ivan Strinic an excellent choice. The 24 year-old costs just 4.0 million and played all of Croatia’s Group F games except for two. Unfortunately, he failed to appear in either leg of the play-offs which would be worrying for his fantasy owners if Bilić decides to stick with the side that swept aside Turkey. After getting 90 minutes against Estonia in their previous friendly, I would be confident of Strinic’s chances of starting if he holds his place for the Norway game this Saturday.

    THE ATTACK

In midfield, there are 4 Croatian placers with a price of either 7.0 or 7.5 million. Luka Modric and Niko Kranjcar both cost 7.5 million but the former’s fantasy potential isn’t exactly brilliant as all Fantasy Premier League players will know. Kranjcar’s minutes aren’t guaranteed so I’d recommend staying well away from the pair. At 7.0 million, we have Ivan Rakitic and Darijo Srna. Rakitic is a no-go area. Despite being guaranteed game time, the Sevilla player is no match for Srna on fantasy terms. Srna has set piece duties in the bag and is also likely to take penalties so his potential for both goals and assists is quite large.

Mario Mandzukic looks to be the best midfield option, though. At 6.0 million he provides a cut-price route into the Croatian midfield and is pretty much nailed-on. The best thing about Mandzukic is that, while classified as a midfielder, he actually plays up front. As a matter of fact, the Wolfsburg man seems to be Bilic’s first choice striker so his potential for goals is arguably bigger than any other Croatian player. He scored 12 goals and managed 8 assists in this season’s Bundesliga so he is coming in on the back of a decent domestic season. At a mere 1.4% ownership, Mandzukic looks like one of the best differential options in the game.

Up front, Nikica Jelavic seems to be grabbing all the attention. With an ownership of 32.4%, he is the highest owned Croatian player in the game. However, his starts are far from assured and he hasn’t managed an international goal since August 2010. The reason for such a huge amount of attention in the Everton striker is that his price tag is a mere 5.0 million and has also just seen the back of a superb domestic season after scoring 9 goals in just 13 Premier League appearances since his move from Rangers. He is a gamble, but he’s cheap and ridiculously clinical so could well reward the masses if he’s given the game time.

Elsewhere in the forwards, Eduardo Da Silva and Ivica Olic both cost 7.5 million, a price tag which has clearly deterred many; the pair have an ownership of 1.5% and 3% respectively. Again, the threat of rotation looms large here and a risk on either striker could prove disastrous considering their hefty prices.

Review of the Bundesliga season: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2012/may/28/honigsteins-bundesliga-review?CMP=twt_gu

German football correspondent on Mario Gomez:

The Bayern Munich forward and new wave haircut aficionado scored 41 goals in all competitions, some of them even from outside the six‑yard box. It's incredible to think what he'd be capable of if he could actually play football, too.

change your GK from Kotorowski to Buric. The second one is better, but as I remember in default squad Kotorowski is in the starting XI

I'm in Division 1 playing with AC Milan ( Zlatan is a bit of a cheat). I would recommend Ivory Coast ( Lots of pacey players) or Napoli ( Cavani, Lavezzi, Maggio, Hamsik etc), they are 4,5 stars so you don't meet Barca and the lot but rather Dortmund and teams like that. It's good fun

Yeah play Antonini instead of Mesbah. I also take out Van Bommel ( so slow) and put Boateng in midfield with Aquilani and Nocerino. Then put Robinho in CF behind Pato and Zlatan. I feel this works really well.

Denmark are a good side. Obviously the Dutch are better but it's not so much to do with their defence as their ridiculously copious amounts of attacking talent. Netherlands 3-1 Denmark seems about right to me. I reckon ze Germans have every chance to keep out a pretty average Portuguese side (bar you know who), however.

    Alreet lads

I'm happy that hazard has chosen chelsea. It would be nice to see a 3 horse race next season, rather than a two horse one! I see as well that they are still linked with hulk. Surely that would have been if the hazrd deal fell through, not as well as? Surely they won't be able to play the following

    Hulk---Mata---Hazard
    ---------Torres-----------

Or if they do, they are going to need to buy somebody like tiote as well (hopefully not tiote!!), and that would push there spending up towards 100 million!!

    Check this out - http://www.newsnow.co.uk/h/Sport/Football/UEFA+Euro+2012

Main Irish news is that John O'Shea looking more doubtful. Keith Fahy already replaced by Paul Green. Not a great analogy but a bit like Chelsea losing Mata and getting Mikel. Fahy is very decent ball player, good passer, scores a few goals. Green has none of those attributes and been released by Derby but Trap loves him.

Our in-house Croat expert, Forca Inter, reckons Strinic is 100% nailed on. He says there is no one else at LB.

And as far as Italy back 4 is concerned, there are lot of contradicting reports. Several possible combinations. Balzaretti could come in at LB and at 5.5, could be a good buy. But other reports say, it'll be Cheillini at LB. So not sure atm.

Ireland have a decent record against Italy. I'd expect Spain and Croatia to score against Italy. I think Italian defenders are over-priced for that reason. I've Shirokov, Padapoulos, Strinic, Perquis and Olsson but they'll probably change before kick-off.

Check out backup players to see how they're doing and to rest the first choice 11 and any injury doubts. Ireland have a training game tomorrow against a Tuscany selection. Maybe not a great idea if they've a few hatchet men to take out some Irish players to benefit Italy in the group. Happened to our rugby team a few years ago, playing a French club, before the World Cup.
