Scout Report – Jan Vertonghen

Tottenham’s restructuring program under new head coach Andre Villas-Boas shows no signs of abating, with yesterday’s announcement that Ajax skipper Jan Vertonghen will join the north London outfit this week, subject to a medical.

The centre-half is the second new arrival in the past few days, following the acquisition of Gylfi Sigurdsson, and will bolster a backline that has already lost Ryan Nelsen and is likely to see Ledley King retire in the close season. A long-term target of the club, Vertonghen was linked with a move to White Hart Lane under the Harry Redknapp regime but the club’s interest continued after the departure of their former manager – the Belgian is expected to be crucial to the first-team cause next term and revealed he is happy to finally seal the move after months of speculation:

I am very relieved. It went on for a long time, but I’m glad I’m a Tottenham player right now and I’m looking forward to playing for the club. I am 25 years old now and I feel ready to play in the Premier League. I have heard a lot of good stories from my Belgium team-mates. I think I’m ready.

The Statistics

Initially, Vertonghen spent time with VK Tielrode and Germinal Beerschot in his native country before joining the Ajax youth academy as a 16-year-old in 2003. Acquired as a defensive midfielder, the 6 foot 2 inch Belgian was shifted into the back-four and, while his natural position is left-sided centre-half, he is versatile enough to slot in at left-back should the need require.

Vertonghen made his debut for the Amsterdam outfit in the 2006 campaign, turning out on a couple of occasions before being sent out on loan to Eredivisie strugglers RKC Waalwijk, where he made 12 appearances and grabbed three goals. Returning to his parent club the following season, Vertonghen established himself as a regular first-team fixture and played under the likes of Marco Van Basten, Martin Jol and Franck De Boer over his time at the Dutch outfit.

A keen eye for goal and set-piece ability saw the Belgian produce impressive attacking returns at Ajax. Over a total of 155 league appearances he netted 26 times and provided nine assists, with the 2011/12 his most eye-catching to date; Vertonghen was voted Dutch Player of the Year as his eight goals helped De Boer’s side to the Eredivisie title.

The Prospects

It’s difficult to ascertain just how much the arrival of Villas-Boas will affect Spurs’ prospects in the season ahead. The north London outfit racked up 14 clean sheets in Redknapp’s final campaign in charge but the high defensive line favoured by the new man in charge will have many Fantasy managers thinking twice over investing in their backline.

Chelsea’s failure to adapt to Villas-Boas’ demanding pressing game saw them picked off on the counter on a consistent basis last time round – the Blues returned just seven clean sheets over his 26 games in charge but Spurs are determined to bring in younger, more dynamic players in order to implement the new manager’s game plan. Vertonghen and the likes of Younes Kaboul and Steven Caulker won’t struggle for pace, while the speed of Kyle Walker on the right will be a valuable asset to the new system, suggesting their defence may find it a little better than John Terry and co to adapt to Villas-Boas’ philosophy.

In addition to his goal contribution, Vertonghen is what you would expect of an Ajax academy graduate. A superb reader of the game, he is calm on the ball with outstanding distribution from the back, which is likely to kick-start quick counter attacks as Spurs look to break at speed – a crucial element of the philosophy expected under Villas-Boas. The centre-half’s strong, all-round game is set to see him priced highly across the Fantasy games next term – a valuation of 6.0 – 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) can be expected.

Certainly, Spurs’ favourable opening schedule affords Vertonghen a chance to demonstrate his capabilities. While a trip to Newcastle in Gameweek 1 seems tricky, the following four matches (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR) look superb and are likely to see substantial Fantasy investment come Tottenham’s way. The Belgian’s contribution at both ends of the pitch suggests he could be a beneficiary of the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index and, providing Villas-Boas can replicate his impact at Porto as opposed to Stamford Bridge, Vertonghen could very well prove to be a strong value option for the season ahead.

Following on from yesterday’s defensive analysis of last season, here is the attacking findings.

Using each team’s average goals scored at home and away, and average goals conceded both home and away, I have come up with figures to help me rank each team in order of amounts of goals scored, over the first 6 gameweeks. For the promoted teams, I have used the average of all 3 promoted teams, over the past 3 seasons.

Using Arsenal as example, they scored 2.053 goals at home on average, while their gameweek 1 opponents Sunderland, conceded 1.526 goals away from home on average. Adding these two together and dividing by 2 gives the expected amount of goals that Arsenal will score (roughly 1.8). As you may remember, Arsenal scored 2 goals at home to Sunderland last season, to it isn’t too inaccurate. I also took the two figures and multiplied them, and ranked each team from highest to lowest. Combining these two results gave a good outline of teams that can be expected to score well.

I have done this for all 20 teams and their first 6 games to give us an indication of which teams should be looking good to score plenty of goals early on. Remember this is based on stats from last season, we all know things are never the same 2 seasons in a row, with new managers and players etc. Anyway, here is the list of teams ranked, with number 1 being the team predicted to score the most goals and so on..

    1 Man City
    2 Spurs
    3 Chelsea
    4 Man United
    5 Arsenal
    - Norwich
    7 Newcastle
    8 Sunderland
    9 Fulham
    10 Swansea
    11 West Brom
    - Everton
    13 West Ham
    14 QPR
    - Aston Villa
    16 Liverpool
    17 Stoke
    18 Wigan
    19 Reading
    20 Southampton

I'm going to be annoying and post this here also (as doubt people will continue to read the old thread)- sorry in advance.

I’m new to FPL but was just wondering (as you guys are experts)…

How much do prices change over what time period (e.g. is it £.5m in 1-2 weeks or £.5m across whole season, injuries aside)- do these prices only change once season starts or do they change between now and then? Can you profit from buys/ sells before season starts?

Is it possible to stock up on pre-season players which are undervalued and likely to increase in value (e.g. buy Giroud this week and hold him until the RVP situation plays out in hope arsenal lose him and don’t sign anyone else, or a fringe player who may step in if player doesn’t fully recover from injury)

Also, how how do new players get added/ removed? Do new players often come in then see their price rise/ fall massively or are the FPL people pretty spot on.

Thanks for any response/ help =)

Transfers in/out do not count towards price changes until the season starts. See FISO CTC and totalfpl once the season is underway for expected price changes. There is a help section on FISO which can answer all your questions now.

A price rise or fall is very rarely more that 0.1m a Game week. There will be some double price rises/falls in the season (so 0.2m) but I don't think I've ever seen more than a 0.2m rise in one Game week.

As for over the season some players will stay the same throughout others will rise or fall as much as around 1-1.5m I think not much more and there will only be a few that will have such high rises/falls.

Price rises don't start till the season starts so no you can't increase you value by transferring in and out before. This is however something you can do when using your Wild Card. Play your WC as soon as the game week before has started and then get in all the performers from that GW in hoping to catch some price rises then ship them out before the start of the next GW to get your real team in. However for this to work you need double+ price rises as you only gain 50% of their increased values.

Your first point isn't true, there were several triple risers last season and after a while we established that there was a cap so players couldn't rise 4 times in a GW. Double rises are quite common for an in form player or one that just had a particularly good week.

As I said "I don't think I've ever seen more than a 0.2m rise in one Game week" don't usually pay too much attention to price rises as I find if your putting enough time into your team they take care of themselves.

So due to me not paying enough attention to them I don't think I have seen one 😀

Depends, Accounts. Good players scoring well regularly can increase £1-£1.2m over a season (David Silva last year for eg). It's done on net transfers in (NTI), prices rise 0.1m when NTI reach the required limit with a GW. To go up a second £0.1m, NTI must go you twice the original limit, and so on, which is why it is very difficult to on up more than £0.3m tops in a single GW.

But it is possible to 'trade' players and boost your cash coffers, although this is not always necessarily easy. More detail on NTI can be found at Fiso's 'Crack the code'.

On the desktop website you hover over the team selection tab and it opens a little menu of "latest points" and "next gameweek". On the iPad you can't open that little menu because there is no such thing as a hover-over on touchscreens so it just opens whichever is default at the time. Slightly annoying but not a killer.

I think I will have some of that, even given the early fixtures (mainly United (H) and City (A) other than that they look good from an attacking p.o.v

Hang on a minute. So Anton Ferdinand didn't actually hear John Terry use any racist term. He looked at you tube footage after the game to come to that decision. What a flimsy case if that's all they've got to base it on. I know Terry is not the most likeable of characters but i'm willing to bet he doesn't get found guilty if nobody heard anything. After all he literally shouts whatever he said over Ashley Coles shoulder

Does anyone know how often the scouts update the ratings for each team on the ticker? I seem to remember that they used stats for the three relegated teams last season for the three promoted teams. Swansea could also possibly have a major downgrade. i'm hoping that they will update them before GW4 as my rotation spreadsheet would be much more useful with updated stats and i'm leaning towards an early WC.

I will make it available to anyone who wants it once it is completed. But i'm not sure how useful it is because all of the strongest rotations include Swansea, and i'm worried that there defence won't be nearly as strong as last year. I think it will be more useful for a GW3-4 WC, once we have had a look at the defences in the first few games.

Disagree with all the replies here. It seems one season is enough to make everyone forget Dawson's quality. He will most definately be ahead of Kaboul and is one of the best defenders in the league. He would have pushed Cahill and Lescott for first choice for England if he was fit

Several reliable Russian sources reported that the signed contract between Mancini and the Russian Football Association actually exists. All referring to their 'reliable sources' within the Russian Football Association. Even an annual compensation of 7.3 million euros is being cited. Hmmm...

Mancini is known to have friends among Russian football authorities. Actually, they could have created this situation to increase the wage that Mancini could negotiate off City and to cut the wage that Russia would pay to their new coach. If this plan fails, then Mancini is the new coach with a huge wage, still not bad. Just a thought...

A few question marks over some key players for the start of the season thanks t the Olympics. Here's a list of those so far I've found in the Olympic squads...feel free to add others. Mata and De Gea stand out as excellent prospect that are likely to miss the first PL game, possibly first two games. Some cheap squad fodder could also be effected.

      Brazil
      Rafael (Manchester United)
      Sandro (Tottenham)

      Spain
      Mata Chelsea
      De Gea Man Utd

      GB
      Micah Richards
      Ryan gigs
      Craig Bellamy
      Daniel Sturridge
      Ryan Betrand
      Aaron Ramsey
      Tom Cleverley

      Uruguay
      Suarez

      Senegal
      Magaye Gueye Everton

      South Korea
      Park - Arsenal

      New Zealand
      Nelson - QPR

I'm sure he'll be fine to play a week later though, as a keeper. Utd ensured he was number 1 and they'll prefer to have the stability of a number 1 unlike at the start of last season.

Do you think De Gea will be fine to start for United being a keeper and all that? 1 week between the games. Although Fergie could be likely to start with players who have been in and around the club over pre season.

Is Lindegaard going to be fit?

I'm not sure it's rest its more about him missing the pre season. As the Count suggests Lindegaard is a possible starter for the season. Very short term punt though.

When Vertonghen was out on loan at RKC, he not only played against Ajax, he scored to make it 2-2. Ajax lost the title that year, not on points, but on goal difference. He does whatever is needed for a win....

Great signing for spurs. Why is everyone so sure Kaboul will be preffered to Dawson? He's been injured the whole of last season and was as highly regarded as King as a CB. Surely he will slot back into the first team alongside this new bloke once he's fit? I know Kaboul put in some good performances last season but its like comparing Jonny Evans to Vidic at United, Dawson is a much better defender and will replace Kaboul when back, as will Vidic to Evans (although Rio will get rested more often now due to age)

Not quite Vidic/Evans Round. 🙂 Kaboul was one of Spurs most improved players last season, a surprising rock and he's quicker and stronger than Daws. But Daws was stand-in Capt when Leds was out, he's highly rated at the club, no question.

Verty, Daws, Kaboul and Caulker will all get plenty of games across the four tournaments, especially if Leds is forced to retire and there are still doubts as to whether Billy stands or goes. CB pairing could well depend on pre-season form - AVB is adamant that's it's a 'new start' for all (yes, even Bentley!).

Kaboul is much more dynamic and comfortable with the ball than Daws. Comparing them to Vidic and Evans is ridiculous (unless you really, really rate Evans). I don't actually think there's a huge amount between Kaboul and Dawson but in the expected system I think it favous Kaboul (and Caulker) much more than Dawson who is more traditional sense.

Hmmm maybe, I still rate Dawson as a defender more, but I suppose AVB's tactics are more suited to Kaboul. Tbh AVB will not survive in the PL if he keeps his tactics the same as he did at Chelsea, our game is too fast paced and players being dragged out of position all the time by closing so high up is a recipe for disaster (unless u are barcelona)

We'll see. AVB's tactics just weren't compatible with Terry (great tackler and great decision making when the game is coming at him but not great chasing and reacting).

            Walker Vert Kaboul BAE
            Sandro

Actually looks like it's meant to play the AVB style, Chelsea did not so it's hard to get an accurate judgement of it yet.

Dawson is a good defender but he isn't world class - I think comparing that situation to Vidic / Evans is a tad extreme.

Yes, Dawson had an injury hit season last year but I think the way it should work is that he has to earn his place back in the team. I think Kaboul is ahead of him at the moment, given the awesome season he had last year but by the end of next season, that could easily change back to Dawson being ahead of him.

Spurs will have enough matches this season for Dawson to get his chance and it's then a question of whether he takes it or not.

Lol yes i know the comparision is a bit, but couldnt think of a similar one off the top of my head and its really there to make my point clearer rather than actually saying they are at the same level as Vidic and Evans (btw I think Evans is better than Kaboul through my red tinted glasses).
Agree with the rest you have said tho, he should have to work his place back, and I think he has the quality to do so.

I agree - I think if he stays injury free, he'll be first choice at Spurs by the end of next season and be part of the England set-up.

Quite like the way Spurs have got Kaboul who can cover at RB and Vertonghen who can also cover at LB.

There's a case for Kaboul being the most improved player in the PL last season. He was immense. I like Dawson, but he's not the quickest and does make mistakes. Not sure he'll fit into AVB's thinking.

The way Spurs are dealing in the transfer market I would expect a new CDM any day now. 🙂

Don't forget the mighty Jake, I predict he'll become a genuine quality Prem players this season.

What do you think of Livermore? He seems very good at keeping possession, average at tackling but lacking in creativity a worse version of Carrick to me. Obviously still young and could improve a lot.

Livermore is more than capable of covering for Sandro and Parker.

'A worse version of Carrick'? What, the Carrick that has been fundamental to MU winning league titles? That's a very strange comment.

Jake is progressing very well, his passing/possession was far tighter than Sandro's last season, and he's physically very strong. Positioning needs work but it's coming, but don't expect him to offer much in attack, it's not really his game - Sandro offers more in that dept.

Mark my words, as much as I respect Parker (my personal Spurs player of the season last) his inevitable prolonged absences through injury will b e noticed less and less this season, largely due to Jake. Controversial it may be, but given the choice to keep one/sell the other, I'd currentl take Jake over Sandro (but, of course, would be very happy to keep both).

Well that's because it wasn't an insult it was a comparison. I really, really rate Carrick and think he's been instrumental to United. But he has always lacked that creative spark and has been better at keeping possession and keeping the tempo. To say that Livermore can do the same but is worse at it doesn't meant I don't rate him I just think he's lacking that creative edge from his game.

Oh and Sandro is a beast and the future of our team IMO.

Suddenly he stopped pounding her. Something was wrong. "Your condom" she said red faced "it came off in me." He grinned "pick that one out!"

Alreet. Are any of the rotation crew on?

I have put King's 3 team rotations into my model. Here are some of my findings:

WARNING, my analysis uses the team ratings from the scout ticker. This is not ideal as it is based on the end of last season. The ratings for the 3 relegated teams have been used for the 3 promoted teams, and there has been no adjustment for new signing, managers, etc. But until the scout updates these ratings, they will have to do.

NB I only look at the rotation up until the winter WC is available, so the first 20 weeks.

      1) Best rotation = SWA/WBA/STK. NB, due to swansea's strong defence last season and great fixtures, they appear in the top 3 rotations (also SWA/QPR/WIG and SWA/QPR/RDG). However, i would be very wary of investing in their defenders until we see what sort of affect Rodgers (and caulker) leaving has. Also, their defenders will likely be expensive. Though Gary Monk shouldn't be more than 4.5m

      2) Best rotation not including swansea = SUN/WIG/FUL

      3) China Mags preferred rotations (not included in King's spreadsheet) = SUN/STK/WBA or SUN/STK/FUL. Is there any reason why these rotations aren't included? I thought maybe cost, but all of these teams are included in other rotations on the spreadsheet.

SWA/STK/WBA is one of the rotations included in King's analysis, which will be around the same cost as my two.

And I would definitely prefer to pay a bit extra for a rotation with much stronger CS possibility

Reckon west brom and west ham will provide the best budget chances of clean sheets this season. Any workable rotations include west ham?

        SUN/STK/WBA gives you:

rdg, RDG, EVE, LIV. RDG, SWA, QPR, NEW, SUN, AVL, QPR, whm, FUL, QPR, STK, avl, WHM, NOR, LIV, SOT

        SUN/STK/FUL gives you:

NOR, RDG, whm, WBA, wig, SWA, sot, AVL, SUN, AVL, QPR, SUN, FUL, QPR, wba, avl, EVE, sot, SOT, SOT.

I think Sun/Stk/Ful you are looking at (at least) 5.0 /5.0 /5.0 - add Ian Harte to the mix and I think that's a bit dear.

Think I'll be looking at cheaper options to complement the heavy hitters, but good info if you're trying to not splash the cash in defence.

SUN/STO/FUL looks good. Trouble is, defenders from them three clubs won't be that cheap.

AVL/QPR/WIG give you a nice run till winter wildcard and shouldn't cost too much

        SWA,EVE,STK,SWA,FUL,WBA,EVE,EVE,NOR,RDG,RDG,AVL,STK,FUL,new,WBA,WIG,swa,SOT

Adding in the fact that Everton always start slow
