FPL Player List Analysis – The Midfielders

Having analysed the Keepers and Defenders, the second part of our breakdown of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player list turns to the midfielders. With David Silva the only player in this position to be valued in double figures, there’s perhaps a little more scope for budget in this area, depending on how many Fantasy managers plan to utilise their allocated cash:

Looking at the 4.5 options here, there is little to no appeal – the likely starters in this price bracket are defensive midfielders in the main, who will seldom offer more than a two-point return. At 5.0, though, Mark Noble comes into our thinking, with spot-kick duties and a fair share of set-pieces for West Ham, while Shaun Maloney could prosper for Wigan if he can remain injury free and maintain his role behind a lone forward in the Latics’ 3-4-2-1 formation. West Brom new boy Yaccine El Ghanassy is similarly priced and can operate up front, though we’ll hedge our bets until we see what Baggies boss Steve Clarke has in mind.

Moving onto the 5.5 bracket, Jean Beausejour is a stand-out; he averaged 4 points per game (ppg) since joining Wigan last January. Nathan Dyer returned 122 points last term and offers strong value in the Swansea midfield, while many will be hoping Stephen Ireland or Marc Albrighton can prosper under new Villa boss Paul Lambert. Reading captain Jobi McAnuff returned five goals and 11 assists last season and could be one to watch if the Royals can produce the goods.

It’s when we reach the 6.0 mark that matters become far more appealing. Kevin Nolan and Adam Lallana offer options from the promoted clubs – the latter has a fair share of corners for Southampton and produced 11 goals and 10 assists in the previous campaign. Adel Taarabt and Wes Hoolahan both finished the 2011/12 season strongly after disappointing starts – their respective form towards the tail end of last term suggests they could be potential bargains here, though Anthony Pilkington could contest Hoolahan for our Norwich affections. Baggies pair James Morrison and Chris Brunt will be on the radar, while new signings such as Brett Holman and Jonathan De Guzman could prosper following moves to Villa and Swansea respectively.

The mid-price bracket continues to offer us plenty to consider. Analysing the 6.5 options, Steven Pienaar could be exceptional value if he completes his move back to Everton – the South African was a superb Fantasy force in the second half of last term at Goodison, though Leon Osman offers potential at the same price for the Toffees. Charles N’Zogbia is another stand-out here; the former Wigan man could well prosper under the attack-minded Paul Lambert at Villa, after last season’s disastrous spell with Alex McLeish in charge. James McClean managed 4.4 points per game in 2011/12 and looks better value than Sunderland team mate Seb Larsson, while Stoke pair Jonathan Walters and Matt Etherington arrive on the back of solid returns in the previous campaign, with the former continuing as an out-of-position prospect.

Victor Moses now comes in at 7.0 after the Wigan winger accrued 140 points last season, though of all the players in this price bracket, Scott Sinclair was the top scoring player in 2011/12 – with spot-kicks in his locker, the Swansea man still looks appealing. Chelsea duo Ramires and Marko Marin will also set you back 7.0; if the latter can establish himself as a regular under Roberto Di Matteo, he could prove to be an absolute steal. Further up the price list, Hatem Ben Arfa’s cost of 7.5 should still prove strong value if he maintains the level of display on the right of a front three in the final few months of last term, though Stephane Sessegnon (8.0) may struggle to pick up suitors, given McClean’s relatively cheap price tag at Sunderland.

Theo Walcott finally proved himself as a bona fide Fantasy option in the season gone by after returning 169 points – the Gunners winger has been slapped with a 9.0 price tag, though many will be hoping the rumours of a move transpire, with Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Gervinho both available for 7.5. Yaya Toure (8.0) and Samir Nasri (8.5) offer alternative routes into the City midfield for those who are reluctant to splash the cash on 10.0 David Silva.

Picking the right option from Spurs and United has never looked so essential. There’s a four-way tie for our affections at Old Trafford; Ashley Young and Shinji Kagawa will set you back 8.5, with Antonio Valencia and Nani only slightly more expensive at 9.0 apiece. Over at the Lane, new boy Gylfi Sigurdsson mirrors Rafael Van der Vaart’s 9.0 price tag after the former averaged 5.7 ppg at Swansea last term, while Gareth Bale comes in at 9.5, after accruing 195 points in the previous campaign.

There are similar dilemmas to ponder over at the Bridge, with very little between Frank Lampard (9.0), Eden Hazard and Juan Mata (both 9.5). With Mata likely to miss the start the season due to a combination of Euro 2012 and Olympic participation, Hazard could start the campaign the strongest of the trio, though Lampard’s spot-kick duties could offset his deeper role in the Blues 4-2-3-1. Finally, Clint Dempsey’s valuation of 9.5 still looks acceptable, bearing in mind he racked up 209 points last season – only Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero managed more.

With plenty of strong options in the upper price range, then, the budget bracket may be more crucial than ever this term as we look to look for cheap, value options in order to spread our cash evenly across the classifications. The likes of Silva, Bale, Mata and Dempsey are likely to receive substantial investment after their 2011/12 exploits but with so many others offering similar potential at a similar cost, there’s the chance (or hope) our midfields won’t quite be so identikit this time round.

Rooney costs a fortune and the Man UTD midfield is like a minefield for rotation. What are peoples thought on Welbeck and Hernandez for frequent starting roles?

I find UTD a pain in the arse in real life and they're proving just as annoying in FPL terms.

Welbeck and Hernandez are not worth touching this season with the acquisition of Kagawa, last season was pretty bad but this season will be a whole lot worse for them. I'm starting the season with just Rooney while trying to bring in the form players as they appear in the United midfield.

Kagawa has made it very difficult for Welbeck and Hernandez to nail down a stating stop. I think Ronney is worth it as he offers goals, set pieces and zero doubt over him starting

I wouldn’t touch any other united forward other than rooney

I feel that nani is great value. He can be incredibly explosive and will always be a good captain choice especially at home. Missed out through injury quite a bit last season, so as long as he stays injury free he should be good

I really don’t think any big name player is completely safe from rotation, so don’t worry about it. Young and nani can play in the same team but given a choice between them nani would be likely to get the nod

People seem very sure Kagawa will walk into the hole position but I still see Chich and Welbeck getting their fair share of starts.

Defence is the safest option and even that's difficult.

I actually had Mata in instead of Marin, but what with the Euros/Olympics and all….but will that REALLY make that much difference to these guys?? Surely no more than a slightly more competitive pre-season jaunt?? And he hardly kicked a ball in the Euros! Torres surely has to start and what with Chelsea having a 2-game week right out of the bat thought he’d be worth it…..Hazard surely a nailed on starter for the money they paid for him?? Delfouneso is gonna be my rarely used fallback striker when I deviate from my 3-5-2, tho maybe I should dig up the extra half mill and put Di Santo back in…….

Reposting, Hate when my question ends up last post on previous page. Thanks for your patience

Would a team with a bargain based midfield interest anyone. eg

Sinclair, McClean, Nzogbia Tarabat ( 4.5 sub)

It allows expensive strikers, defenders and keeper….provided all your bench is cheap as chips.

Would they supplement your HUGE hitters enough to be a viable option?

    I’m thinking they might? Thoughts?

I like. Similar to mine - in part thanks to your spreadsheet ;p
Only real differences are the midfield, which I'm not too happy about. I have Lamps, Bale and Ireland at the moment instead of Hazard, Taarabt and Pienaar.

Last season we did well with 5 high-scoring midfielders - there's just not enough in your midfield to get anywhere close to that. It's too much of a risk and they won't all score well every week. Graham this season is also a poor pick imo.

2 Chelsea defenders is a risk, especially when it's Di Matteo's first Proper season.
Nice balance to the team though.

Rooney, Hazard and Rooney (c) rotation could work nicely.

Don't see Graham scoring big this season and Pienaar could be a bad pick if Everton start as slow as usual.

Everybody was playing terribly last season, our style didn't suit N'Zogbia as much, and we played games with 7 defenders and Heskey as a lone striker. McLeish is against all forms of creativity.

And there was that Twitter moment of N'Zogbia's which didn't help matters...

Hard to say really, I just found that he seemed to be out as much as he was in. And of course he wasn't brilliant every time he played either! He was a bit hot and cold. If he cost a bit less he might be more of an option but at that price you'd be better served saving the half mill and going for Yaya, if he pushes forward again like he was doing last season he's much better value and one of the few that's all but immune to the rotation policy there!

Fire In My Hole - I actually had Mata in instead of Marin, but what with the Euros/Olympics and all....but will that REALLY make that much difference to these guys?? Surely no more than a slightly more competitive pre-season jaunt?? And he hardly kicked a ball in the Euros! Torres surely has to start and what with Chelsea having a 2-game week right out of the bat thought he'd be worth it.....Hazard surely a nailed on starter for the money they paid for him?? Delfouneso is gonna be my rarely used fallback striker when I deviate from my 3-5-2, tho maybe I should dig up the extra half mill and put Di Santo back in.......

I was just pointing it out to other people, just in case. I know the players I'm looking at but I know what you for mean, for example Tevez would be a certainty if he's starting. But then I don't see the point in sorting out just a back 6 if you don't know how much money you need for the rest of the team. This is why it's probably better to pick a team in a couple of weeks 😉

I know it's early doors yet and we don't know how well the teams with dirt cheap defenders will fare defensively, but I don't fancy any of the rotation combos at the moment.

I'm strongly considering going for this:

    DdG - Federici

Lescott Ivanovic/Cole (Arsenal defender) (Southampton/Norwich defender) (West Ham defender)

Given Sagna's injury at RB, we should be able to get a cheap Arsenal defender (Jenkinson/Mertesacker), provided Wenger doesn't sign any new players.

    What do you lot reckon?

So playing 4 defenders? Ivanovic, Lescott, Cole/Clichy + 1 of the 2 rotating?

Yeah I'll play 4 defenders to begin with I think.

That should have been 4m fillers btw.

Or else Cole/Clichy will be Hangeland, I haven't looked at the mid priced midfield options properly yet.

Hangeland is an option if I don't go with Arsenal as his goal threat is tempting. A cheap Sunderland/Southampton player to back him up would work, although the rotation isn't great.

I'm considering both. May be safer to go for a non-Utd defender, but I think Vidic at 7 is good value and apart from maybe Vermaelen and Baines, has the greatest potential for attacking returns. Plus they kept a clean sheet in half of their games without Vidic and a decent full-back, so clean sheets aren't a worry for Utd.

Kaboul was immense last year, he could keep his place, especially if he stays fit and Gallas/Dawson continue with their fitness problems. Vertongen is also a new signing and will need time to adjust, plus Caulker won't walk right into the team. I guess we will have to wait and see what AVB does in pre-season. The point is he's a cheap pick and was nailed on last year.

I think that having Torres as your main striker is a massive risk as it's hard to get money to refund your strike force if it goes wrong.

So which 4.0m defenders apart from Fonte that are actually nailed on? Mariappa will threaten Gorkss position at Reading and apparently Matt Taylor may take McCartney's position.

I need one more 4m defender to fill this position:

    de Gea(6) Jaaskelainen(4.5)
    Boyce(5) Lescott(6.5) Ivanovic(6.5) ________ Fonte(4)
    Maloney(5) Taarabt(6) Silva(10) Noble(5) Bale(9.5)
    Torres(10) Graham(6) Rooney(12)

Demel? Think I saw someone on this forum mentioning that they thought he was likely to play regularly.

Dont' know, to be honest. But if it remains a struggle, you could downgrade Juicy to £4m GK, then upgrade when you sell off Torres, who would likely go to a cheaper striker.

Thanks guys, I'm not keen on a Norwich defender so Demel sounds perfect. And thanks Frazek but i'd like a back-up to de gea, and i plan to get Suarez for Torres in gw3 so it's a bit far away.

Mind you, not even Demel is nailed on. That rb position is in question atm. I guess i'll have to wait for some more pre-season games!

Not keen on Norwich defender so going for West Ham instead (arguably a worse team than Norwich!).

        Classic stuff.

No to ruddy. Better options than park at the same price. Djibrill Cisse over Helguson. Dempsey is looking likely to move. No Spurs coverage. Otherwise average 🙂

    a) Hazard and Graham/Petric

    b) Dyer and Torres

The Graham option offers more scope for a big hitting mid, and the opportunity to get Berba if he gets a PL move, but surely this new look Chelsea can provide some ammunition for Torres.

Someone please take Berba or Lukaku, make my life so much easier

Nasri to a 6.5 million mid (N'Zog, Pienaar or McLean)

I like the Reina choice, I keep flicking between him and DDG.

As discussed earlier Nasri is a rotation risk but could be a good gamble.

True on the balance though, over all looks good. Who are your captain choices though? Aguero/Hazard?.. Bale?

hmmm, captain choices, never thought of that.

        kun, bale and bent.
yu recommend one big hitter up front to save the risky (C) choices every week?
