The Burning Question: Can Gylfi Sigurdsson Replicate his Form at Spurs?

Our next Burning Question article focuses on one of last season’s surprise packages, the Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson. The former Reading man was snapped up on loan from Hoffenheim by Swansea during the January transfer window and promptly made a mockery of his 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, scoring seven goals and assisting three more while playing in “the hole” behind Danny Graham. His formidable displays took Fantasy managers and Swansea’s opponents by surprise and by the end of the season the Icelandic international was hot property.

New Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who had also managed Sigurdsson during his stint at Reading, was chief amongst the midfielder’s suitors and keen to re-unite with the playmaker once again this summer but it was Tottenham who ultimately secured him on a permanent deal in the region of £6.5m. With such attacking talents, even a FPL price hike to 9.0 and a 7.3 tag in the Sky Sports game may still represent a bargain. Already during pre-season friendlies he has scored two goals, but questions remain as to how manager Andre Villas-Boas will fit Sigurdsson and fellow attacking midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart into the same side. During Spurs 1-1 draw with LA Galaxy and in last night’s 2-0 loss to Valencia, Sigurdsson played worryingly deep while Van Der Vaart was on the pitch, but has been utilised in an attacking role whenever the Dutch midfielder isn’t on the pitch.

Mark says…
The early signs are good. So far in pre-season it appears that Andre Villas-Boas has looked to harness Sigurdsson’s talents – I can’t help but notice that he’s immediately jumped the pecking order on set-plays. There is concern about the role that Sigurdsson will play once Luka Modric has flown the nest – something which looks inevitable. He could find himself as part of a midfield three with Rafael Van der Vaart and Gareth Bale flanking a lone striker, or worse still, deeper in a 4-2-3-1. It remains to be seen if that system will allow Sigurdsson to exert his considerable influence around the opposition’s penalty area. We’d like to think so but, with both Van der Vaart and Bale similarly priced, I wonder if Sigurdsson is the riskier option of the three right now. Certainly I’m leaning towards Bale – he seems more certain to kick-on from last season, whereas Sigurdsson set high standards at Swansea and was a key figure in a side that seemed to be bereft of direct goal threats.

Paul says…
It all depends on his game time. If Sigurdsson becomes an integral member of the Spurs first-team under Andre-Villas Boas, I see no reason as to why he can’t replicate last season’s form. When the summer transfer window closes, we’re likely to get a better idea of Villas-Boas’ intentions – he has maintained a 4-2-3-1 in pre-season with Sigurdsson mainly utilised in “the hole” but the manager has admitted that is mainly down to current personnel. A preferred 4-3-3 formation, with Sigurdsson tucked in behind a lone frontman, would replicate the Icelandic international’s role under Brendan Rodgers at Swansea and Reading and surely boost his appeal. Quite how Villas-Boas will use Rafael Van der Vaart should be key; if the Dutchman is vying for the same role as Sigurdsson, both players’ minutes could be reduced and promote Gareth Bale as the main midfield option in the Tottenham midfield for Fantasy managers. Spurs scored 66 goals last season – 22 more than Swansea – and if Sigurdsson becomes nailed-on, his creativity will be key next term. With the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker ideal for Villas-Boas’ high defensive line, the potential is there for the Portuguese manager to quickly draw a line under his brief spell at Chelsea last time round.

Anorak says…
Whether through the change in manager at Spurs, or the enforced absence of Rafael van der Vaart due to injury, there is certainly a new verve to the attacking midfield slot of Andre Vilas-Boas’ Tottenham side during the pre-season friendlies. Sigurdsson appears to have slotted seamlessly into a Spurs pre-season midfield without the aforementioned Dutchman and Modric, and has made himself at home picking up both an assist and a goal in the final game of that US tour (a 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls). That said, the future of both Modric and Van der Vaart is sure to have a key part to play in the potential success of Sigurdsson at Spurs – should they both start the season at White Hart Lane, then midfield spaces will be at a premium, even in the 4-2-3-1 formation likely to be adopted – one of Sigurdsson and Van der Vaart would need to be pushed wide right and, in order to maintain balance (and some semblance of width) could easily find themselves benched.

Andy says…
As the unofficial president of the Gylfi Sigurdsson fan club, this is perhaps the one question that has caused me sleepless nights in pre-season. My short answer is an unequivocal, yes. The Icelander has all the talent to succeed at this level but now that he is surrounded by the likes of Gareth Bale and Rafael Van Der Vaart – and with Emmanuel Adebayor still in the shopping list – I am a little worried he could end up sharing the spoils a little too much. I think he has more than enough ability but I’m definitely fearful of how his new team-mates will impact upon his scoring. There’s just as much a part of me that thinks having a stronger squad around him will only better his cause.

    2.5m in the difference.

Bent is the better player IMO, but Swansea have tasty fixtures, altough Villas are not bad either.. both have scored in preseason.

2.5m could drastically help elsewhere.. (But Bent can score goals and takes pens!)

'Generic' is possibly one of the stupidest comments to make in regards to a team, because it *doesn't mean anything*.

It doesn't mean good, it doesn't mean bad. It's a way of saying "I've seen a lot of that in RMTs on here" as a way of establishing some sort of status - but it really is very, very silly.

RVP was generic. So was Boselli. See, I didn't f***ing say anything, really, did I?

+1 I get irritated when people just say 'generic' and its meant in a negative light. If it is 'a thing' at all it is more positive if anything. People on here *generally* have some idea of what they are doing. If there is somewhat of a consensus on certain players its usually because said players have a lot of potential

I'm surprised by the amount I seem to have offended by using the word 'generic'. I didn't mean it in a very negative light and I did say his team has no weaknesses. I'm just stating that he won't do incredibly well with that particular team.

    Thoughts on this team?

    Friedel, Green
Ivanovic (Cole if Ivan gets banned), Zabaletta, Cuellar, Gunter, Clyne
    Mata, Bale, Lampard, Noble, Maloney
    Rooney, Tevez, Graham

One thing I like about this team is it covers most attacking bases and I'm not pressed to make any transfers in GW2, but if any of the MUN mids look like must haves for GW2-4, then Lamps -> one of them is an easy trade.

Another option is to switch Bale, Noble & Maloney -> Yaya, Pienaar & Kaca (and then do Lamps -> Bale in GW2). Whatcha reckon?

Like it, but I would get Zabaleta instead of Lescott and use the 5 saved to swop Cuellar for someone who might get some attacking points.. and if Ivan doesn't get banned he has far more attacking threat than Cole these days

Ivan is a good option at this stage because he also has no competition at RB. Although it is generally assumed Chelsea will buy one before the transfer window closes.

I get that Nolan is proven. He's a good prospect, but for me, QPR are going to be a surprise team this season and do well. Good manager, good solid signings, and a player classed as a mid playing as second-striker with a bit of form from the end of last season is worth the 6.0 price point imo.

He turned down the chance to go to United for gametime at Southampton. He was also in the championship team of the year. A young lad with a big future, he is also very attacking. He will be nailed on at RB for Southampton.

        Yes,

Guthrie is 4.5m bench fodder who won't get off my bench unless there's an emergency and for the double gameweek.

Michu has high potential playing in the hole behind the striker and his goal record last season was phenomenal. A worthwhile risk considering Swansea's fixtures.

Maloney and Noble are too middle weight mids who you'll have to rotate. I've been burned too many times by rotating outfield players. Pick a reliable 2 point mid and have him on your bench to pull out on occasion.

If Tevez was a Man City mid, we would all have him and Aguero most likely. Tevez is exceptional value for money, Aguero is a world class striker.

Thus i'm coming around to the idea of one less big hitter in midfield for Tevez to be my 3rd striker, alongside Rooney and Aguero.

Expensive and maybe not a long term solution, but having Tevez over Aguero and pocketing the extra 2.5 while nice, does not sit easy at all. Why? Cause Aguero imo is the best striker in the league, bar maybe a fit RVP.

I've seen a few people with this idea but it just doesn't feel right to me. Having close to a quarter or your budget on 2 strikers from 1 team (albeit a good team) is very risky. If City under perform for whatever reason you are basically screwed.

On paper I don't like the look of it either, your losing a big midfielder and coverage from another big side, whichever your big midfielder was covering for Tevez to be your 3rd slot.

I guess you have to ask yourself, with Cities opening fixtures, would you be comfortable having say Aguero and Silva, which costs more?

I don't reckon Aguero and Tevez is a long term option myself, but with the opening fixtures it may give us a reason to pussy out of the Aguero or Tevez argument in the short term at least.

I don't think that is a fair comparison. There are few midfielders who will match Silva's points haul this season but i'd wager there are plenty of strikers who are close or better than Tevez.

Having Tevez in your team and thinking of him as a 'big midfielder' doesn't change the fact that he's taking up a valuable striker spot while you're have to compensate with an average midfielder (when there are FIVE of those spots available)

PS: This is all hypothetical of course seeing as Silva isn't even match fit!

I am American living in Hawaii and this is only my second year following EPL and playing fantasy football. I finished third last year against a large field of European dudes (my sisters fiancee is Polish) who have been following it for their entire lives. They were surprised by my performance to say the least. Here is my team this year:

    Federici
    Krul

    Hangeland
    Shawcross
    P.Jones

    Sigurdsson
    Bale
    Kagawa
    Allen

    Rooney
    Graham
    Suarez

    Bench-
    Coloccini
    Cuellar
    Britton

    Questions:
-should i replace Kagawa with Yaya? (.5 cheaper)?
-there are a lot of goalie options at 5.5, is Krul a good choice? (why does nobody have Vorm this year?)

Thanks everyone! This site has helped me tremendously, making up for a lost 35 years of football ignorance! EPL fantasy has major growth potential in the States.

i did but have been struggling on who to include...i had Hazard in there but he will reportedly be eased slowly into the rotation. Just don't feel confident with Torres. Mata might be a nice replacement for Bale considering the DGW. I don't have good feel for which mids will be starting. I was looking at Ramires too. I learned my lesson last year by bending over backwards to max out double game weeks only for it not to pan out and eat up a bunch of transfers. Early in the year i focus on cashing in on price rises as opposed to maximum point opportunities.

Suarez and Allen have brutal fixtures in the first 6.

I like Kagawa, but he is a bit of a gamble.

Siggs and Bale feels a bit much ... and when VDV plays, Siggs may get pushed back. So I'm wait-and-see with him, especially @ 9.0

Shawcross is a no (fixtures in first 6 GWs) and PJones is a massive doubt for time/position.

Not liking Krul's first 3 or 4 games, either.

Welcome to the game. Good luck embarrassing those folks.

I don't understand the idea of having both Aguero and Tevez in the team together. There are only 3 striker positions, why use up two of those with players on the same team? Surely it will detract from the value of both of them. Eggs baskets anyone?

hmmm i suppose this is true but even that is a gamble in itself. Is it really a good idea to be pre planning your transfers already? Especially this early in the season when things are so unsettled. Who knows what GW1 will throw up? I'm sure there will be plenty of line up surprises not to mention the odd injury.

Easy to get stuck needing to take a points hit early or carry on with a quarter of your budget tied up in one team. Not to mention you need them to batter Southampton. We've seen plenty of newly promoted sides come up and start really well. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see them give City a good game.
