Injury Concerns for Pardew Ahead of Spurs Clash

While we’re always a little cynical when it comes to withdrawals prior to international friendlies, Alan Pardew clearly has plenty to ponder ahead of Newcastle’s Gameweek 1 opener against Spurs. Having watched his side lose 4-1 to Cardiff at the weekend, the Magpies boss is keen to rally his troops in time for Saturday evening’s home clash with Andre Villas-Boas’ side but this morning he revealed he has several first-team concerns on the horizon…

Up front, both Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse are struggling for fitness. The pair missed out against Cardiff, with Pardew handing Shola Ameobi the lone striker role in a 4-4-1-1, which saw Jonas Gutierrez play in “the hole” – a possible sign of things to come should the Senegal strikers fail to recover from their respective injuries.

Bearing in mind that Newcastle then travel to Greece to face Atromitos in the Europa League on Thursday August 25 before their Gameweek 2 visit to Chelsea only two days later, it’s fair to say that Pardew will likely be cautious with his team selection for fear of any long-term absence.

“Papiss has got a slight hamstring we think he will recover by Tuesday or Wednesday. Demba has a shin injury which he has carried for a week or so. So we took him out of the game on Tuesday.”

There are plenty of other concerns, aside from the two forwards. Pardew also conceded that Hatem Ben Arfa is all but out of the Spurs game due to a knee problem, while Yohan Cabaye’s lack of match fitness is a big worry. Ben Arfa’s absence looks set to boost the first-team chances of Sylvain Marveaux – the winger impressed in the recent 5-1 win over Hartlepool by bagging a brace – while Ryan Taylor’s versatility could be significant here; he has started in central midfield recently and could well fill in again.

Indeed, Taylor’s chances are increased by the news that Cheick Tiote is also a doubt after limping out of the Cardiff defeat with a calf problem. With skipper Fabricio Coloccini also battling to overcome a hamstring knock, Pardew is facing an anxious next few days as he prepares for the curtain to raise on the new campaign.

All this, of course, could be good news for Tottenham’s attacking assets in Gameweek 1. With the London outfit set to follow this trip with (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR), plenty investment in Villas-Boas’ side is already expected. The idea of Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Rafael Van der Vaart lining up against an under-strength Magpies will strengthen Fantasy faith as we look to nail down our squads prior to Saturday morning’s deadline.

Our full team news service will be restored very soon, collecting all the very latest and offering predicted lineups as the days tick by towards the kick-off.

Neither. Both overpriced imo for the position they play.

Yeah, McCartney for West Ham. Not sure about Barnett, but I've been hearing that Fonte isn't necessarily nailed on. Might get stuck with him later on.
Also look into Gorkss from Reading.

Tevez + Valencia for me mate.

My side isn't nailed on yet and I can see its weak points (defence) but so far

De Gea Federeci (for double g/w)

Zabaleta/Kolorov S Taylor Cuellar Demel Tierney

Corzola Hazard Pienaar Noble Lampard (to become VDV I think after GW1)

    Rooney Tevez Graham/Petric

I like Podolski, esp if he gets pens if RVP goes and I like Lallana too as a player once Soton's fixtures settle down. I know Haz and Corz are risks being new to the PL but I rate both as players and figure I might as well gamble on them from the start.

Last year I did the cheap keeper option (Vorm etc) and this year I'd love to gamble on Rafael at 5.5..but De Gea at 6.0 is a good way into the meanest defence of last season in the PL

False economy though. If you weaken your keeper to beef up your defence it's practically the same thing since DDG is cheaper than the nailed on United defenders.

I see a lot of teams with De Gea and Federici as second keeper. Would it not make more sense to pair DDG with someone he doesn't rotate with, eg. Green, as if De Gea is benched it's likely to be a home game so Green would also have a home game that week. And I'd never bench De Gea anyway.Ever.
    Just a thought.

Lampard played deep with Mikel, but still got forward a good bit before Ivanovic was sent off. Ramires played on the right of a front three with Hazard on the left and Mata behind Torres. Ramires looked the best of the bunch before he got shifted to right back after the sending off, and the other two were poor all game IMO. Torres took his goal well, but apart from that didn't do much at all.

Clark looks a better bet than Lowton. He seems to be nailed on, he gets goals and sometimes plays OOP in midfield.

Thanks everyone for feedback, Had Clark for Villa and Shawcross for Stoke in the first draft. I'll post it again this evening for another iteration.

Anyone else think they may have to change to a more 'forum' based site.....it's a Monday a week before FPL kicks off and there's just too many questions filling pages and no time to respond/read it all....a bit too much IMHO

problem is there will be 100s of RMT threads being created. Sure you could create a sticky RMT thread but still.

I don't think there is much chance of it happening anyway

Silva will miss the first 2-3 games I think. Kagawa is a big gamble as it remains to be seen how much he will be rotated. I would downgrade those 2 and upgrade your strikers.

Right got a few questions about my team after missing out on the action at the weekend:

    Friedel Federici
    Terry Lescott Cuellar Demel Fonte
    Lampard Valencia Taarabt NDyer Maloney
Aguero Torres (Rooney in GW2) Graham

    1) Did Torres do well?

    2) Should I change Valencia to Kagawa? How did Kagawa look in the latest game?
(If I do this I can then also do Taarabt -> McClean)

    3) Is Lampard the man to have for the Chelsea DGW? (Hazard?)

    4) IS there any other changes I should consider?

Not sure. Mancini is so hard to read but I can see SIlva starting despite lack of rest.

its pretty standard, as it has players that are in most of the rmts. too balanced for me tho

Looks very strong to me! No such thing as "too standard/generic". Those players are in a lot of RMT's for a reason.

What do people think about Defoe as a differential. As long as spurs dont sign anyone else up top. With that midfield support and an easy start he could get a goal a game average surely?

People say even that Kane kid is higher in the pecking order. Don't buy it myself, and I'm considering Defoe.

It was in the papers the other day I think. For what it's worth Kane has looked better than Defoe preseason but that doesn't mean much.

Harrys still a bit wet behind the ears so i think he'll start the season. I've always been a big fan of defoe. As long as he gets game time i think he'll deliver. Look how many points he got last season considering his game time.

As long as Ade doesn't sign Defoe will be a bargain. Unfortunately Ade will probably sign this week.

With Barry out and plenty of attackers I expect City to use Yaya in a holding role for first few weeks. Any ideas on a good alternative?
