Injury Concerns for Pardew Ahead of Spurs Clash

While we’re always a little cynical when it comes to withdrawals prior to international friendlies, Alan Pardew clearly has plenty to ponder ahead of Newcastle’s Gameweek 1 opener against Spurs. Having watched his side lose 4-1 to Cardiff at the weekend, the Magpies boss is keen to rally his troops in time for Saturday evening’s home clash with Andre Villas-Boas’ side but this morning he revealed he has several first-team concerns on the horizon…

Up front, both Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse are struggling for fitness. The pair missed out against Cardiff, with Pardew handing Shola Ameobi the lone striker role in a 4-4-1-1, which saw Jonas Gutierrez play in “the hole” – a possible sign of things to come should the Senegal strikers fail to recover from their respective injuries.

Bearing in mind that Newcastle then travel to Greece to face Atromitos in the Europa League on Thursday August 25 before their Gameweek 2 visit to Chelsea only two days later, it’s fair to say that Pardew will likely be cautious with his team selection for fear of any long-term absence.

“Papiss has got a slight hamstring we think he will recover by Tuesday or Wednesday. Demba has a shin injury which he has carried for a week or so. So we took him out of the game on Tuesday.”

There are plenty of other concerns, aside from the two forwards. Pardew also conceded that Hatem Ben Arfa is all but out of the Spurs game due to a knee problem, while Yohan Cabaye’s lack of match fitness is a big worry. Ben Arfa’s absence looks set to boost the first-team chances of Sylvain Marveaux – the winger impressed in the recent 5-1 win over Hartlepool by bagging a brace – while Ryan Taylor’s versatility could be significant here; he has started in central midfield recently and could well fill in again.

Indeed, Taylor’s chances are increased by the news that Cheick Tiote is also a doubt after limping out of the Cardiff defeat with a calf problem. With skipper Fabricio Coloccini also battling to overcome a hamstring knock, Pardew is facing an anxious next few days as he prepares for the curtain to raise on the new campaign.

All this, of course, could be good news for Tottenham’s attacking assets in Gameweek 1. With the London outfit set to follow this trip with (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR), plenty investment in Villas-Boas’ side is already expected. The idea of Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Rafael Van der Vaart lining up against an under-strength Magpies will strengthen Fantasy faith as we look to nail down our squads prior to Saturday morning’s deadline.

Our full team news service will be restored very soon, collecting all the very latest and offering predicted lineups as the days tick by towards the kick-off.

I have a feeling that getting any of the Man U midfield will just result in pain and misery... I just see them being rotated far to much for what you pay. If pushed though I'd say B.

Has anyone posted a link with teams that rotates perfectly with each others? e.g when Everton plays home fixture then Arsenal playes away fixtures 38/38 GWs or as close as 38 as possible?

Figure there's alot of work in either excel or notepad but if someone has made the effort then he might be willing to share and be a good sport about it 🙂

Well, here's a top heavy one - covers the main risks for the CHE DGW, but I'm thinking that maybe the defence is just a little too cheap!

    Schwarzer, Begovic
    Zabaleta, Cuellar, Clyne, Gunter, Demel
    Mata, Bale, Lampard, Nasri, Guthrie
    Torres(c), Tevez, Graham

    Bank 2.0m (Torres -> Rooney in GW2)

Hi Jinswick - the old different crowd different answers tactic, eh?

The ubercheaps look great on paper but you end up wasting transfers fiddling about with them when they get injured, dropped or turn out to be dire. Unless you plan to wildcard in week 4. There are some decent value 4.5ers this year as well but I think 2 regular starters plus three rotators is the best way.
Each to their own but Mata and Lampard looks slighly excessive. Mata was anonymous yesterday and also pish at the Olympics, theres no way Frank is going to play Sun, Wed, Sun, Wed, Sun on his 34 year-old legs and Torres is bobbins. Bobbins.

If you're looking to play 3 at the back most GWs, you don't need Kosc, Cole and Zab, I'd say it'd be better upgrading Guthrie or leaving some more cash spare to get on any players that are on form at the start

    RMT please

    Friedel / Federici
    Cashley / Zabaletta / Hughes / Gorkss / Cueller
    Bale / Noble / Yaya / Cazorla / Mikel
    Tevez / Graham / Torres

Don't laugh at Mikel, I know he's shit, It's just for GW1 for an easy 4 points or possibly more as Di Matteo does like him, I was thinking about Ramirez but there's too much pressure to shift him early which I want to avoid & I can have yaya fron the start this way, plus there's no pressure to shift him as any other 4.5m player I might've picked wouldn't figure anyway

3.5m banked - still undecided on cazorla so might change that, maybe valencia

    the transfer plan is:

    1 - Torres>Rooney
    2 - Cole>cheaper defender, maybe Rio
3 - Mikel>better midfielder to rotate with noble, or Zabelletta>? - just depends on when Richards returns

Yeah, that's decent. Don't reckon it's worth getting Lamps or Mata instead of Cazorla though given they have a decent DGW and Arsenal have tough fixtures in GW2 and 3?

I love the cazorla punt. I just don't have the balls. I'm going to let him settle a bit first, and see out arsenals poor opening fixtures. Arsenal look good from GW10 for me

Did Nasri get one? Sturridge came on for Mata and got one too. That's it, I think.

    Siggy Lampard Walcott N.Dyer Puncheon
    Rooney Tevez Petric

    Good to go?

Anyone got much knowledge on Norwich midfield line up? Specifically, is Howson likely to be a regular starter?

    Cheers,

Yeah he'll start every game - not that attacking though.
      Snodgrass is your man.

It should be a 5 man mid with Howson, Johnson, Pilkington, Hoolahan, Snodgrass.

really don't like the defences. Too much money on gks. Don't think Swansea will give returns in defence this season. Kaboul not nailed on. Harte not nailed on, Nasri not nailed on.

I like Torres, Rooney, Ble & Taarabt tho

Both equal imo but Kagawa is 0.5 less and has more competition for minutes..

Kagawa until Arsenals fixtures improve, then Carzola. Personally I think Kagawa is too risky as he will almost certainly get rotated.

    I know it's a common theme, but I wonder what people make of these particular combinations;

    A) N'Zogbia and Aguero

    B) Valencia and Tevez

(and please don't talk rubbish about Valencia at RB.)

    Dear sirs 😉

Are all of these 4.0 defenders supposed to be nailed on starters?

    - Gorkss, Gunter, Mariappa, Demel, McCartney, Clyne, Fonte -

I think reading, west ham and southampton rotate really well, companied by two big shots.
The question is which 3 to pick.. Who will start games? What do you think?

I'm currently on Gunter - Demel - Fonte..
