Injury Concerns for Pardew Ahead of Spurs Clash

While we’re always a little cynical when it comes to withdrawals prior to international friendlies, Alan Pardew clearly has plenty to ponder ahead of Newcastle’s Gameweek 1 opener against Spurs. Having watched his side lose 4-1 to Cardiff at the weekend, the Magpies boss is keen to rally his troops in time for Saturday evening’s home clash with Andre Villas-Boas’ side but this morning he revealed he has several first-team concerns on the horizon…

Up front, both Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse are struggling for fitness. The pair missed out against Cardiff, with Pardew handing Shola Ameobi the lone striker role in a 4-4-1-1, which saw Jonas Gutierrez play in “the hole” – a possible sign of things to come should the Senegal strikers fail to recover from their respective injuries.

Bearing in mind that Newcastle then travel to Greece to face Atromitos in the Europa League on Thursday August 25 before their Gameweek 2 visit to Chelsea only two days later, it’s fair to say that Pardew will likely be cautious with his team selection for fear of any long-term absence.

“Papiss has got a slight hamstring we think he will recover by Tuesday or Wednesday. Demba has a shin injury which he has carried for a week or so. So we took him out of the game on Tuesday.”

There are plenty of other concerns, aside from the two forwards. Pardew also conceded that Hatem Ben Arfa is all but out of the Spurs game due to a knee problem, while Yohan Cabaye’s lack of match fitness is a big worry. Ben Arfa’s absence looks set to boost the first-team chances of Sylvain Marveaux – the winger impressed in the recent 5-1 win over Hartlepool by bagging a brace – while Ryan Taylor’s versatility could be significant here; he has started in central midfield recently and could well fill in again.

Indeed, Taylor’s chances are increased by the news that Cheick Tiote is also a doubt after limping out of the Cardiff defeat with a calf problem. With skipper Fabricio Coloccini also battling to overcome a hamstring knock, Pardew is facing an anxious next few days as he prepares for the curtain to raise on the new campaign.

All this, of course, could be good news for Tottenham’s attacking assets in Gameweek 1. With the London outfit set to follow this trip with (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR), plenty investment in Villas-Boas’ side is already expected. The idea of Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Rafael Van der Vaart lining up against an under-strength Magpies will strengthen Fantasy faith as we look to nail down our squads prior to Saturday morning’s deadline.

Our full team news service will be restored very soon, collecting all the very latest and offering predicted lineups as the days tick by towards the kick-off.

I'm steering clear of vdv and siggs and going for Bale instead - at least you know he's nailed-on and it gonna score big points. Chelsea midfield has yet to interest me - i've gone for torres (for the first week anyway). I personally don't see Lampard scoring big this season - not with Mata, Sturridge, Torres and Hazard all banging 'em in

Lamp's on set pieces though. I probably overrate him because of his goalscoring history. He will only last for the first gw anyways.
I like VdV as a fantasy option better than Bale, but he's such a injury prone.

Look at the fixtures - Cazorla may well be great, but I don't see shedloads of Arsenal goals in those initial games, aside from maybe the Southampton game.

I would wait and see and jump on him when the fixtures freshen up.

Nobody really.. Ramsey and Rosicky rotated there last season and although Rosicky had quite a good season by his own standards, neither are going to come close to Cazorla.

He's completely nailed on in the CAM spot I'd say!

Should I downgrade shawcross so i have more to upgrade/ to get aguero/rooney for torres for gw2? If so who shall i get for shawcross? Also is kagawa nailed on or should I go valencia or maybe nani, or even to Carzola? Thanks 🙂

You might want to downgrade Graham to Boselli but apart from that, it looks good!

We could do with an article on which players are away on internationl duty this week.

It will affect my decision on which Chelsea players to select.

Im currently on Terry & Hazard, but cant make my mind up.

    Also have Nando.

Have 2.5m spare. Very happy with the rest of my team, but the saving comes from midfield where i'm unsure whether to upgrade one or more of Noble, Dembele or Nzog with the leftover cash. Was weighing up Lampard instead of Nzog, esp with double GW. Although I already have Cole and Torres, so don't want to become overly reliant on Chelsea for when their empty GW comes as i'm already planning on shipping out Torres for Rooney soon enough (Who isn't!)

Hallo all, am going on holiday tomorrow so need to set my team (captain, bench), today!

Does this look right for GW1?

    Jussi
    Cole - Zabaleta - Hughes
    Bale - Mata - Pienaar - McClean
    Torres(c) - Tevez (vc) - Graham

Bench: Mignolet - Maloney - Coloccini - Cuellar

    defense of
    Ivanovic Zabaleta Saylor Celluar Demel

is it better if i find a 4.5 .4.5 rotation to upgrade zab to lescott? or is it fine as now?

    Ivanovic is playable btw, confirmed

I know Iva is playable.. Just doubt if he will start after that red-card incident. Anyway, Chelsea don't have a better RB choice yet.

What's about Hughes instead of Saylor and upgrade Zaba for long-term choice.

    Bale Cazorla Silva Miyaichi Kacaniklic
    Tevez Torres Graham

    + 2.0M for the obvious.

Depends on whether Gio stays and whether AVB rates him or not. Also depends on how VDV and Siggy are played. I'm thinking he's pretty safe for the first few weeks, but no guarantee.

With Lampard likely to sit deep and Hazard being very expensive and unproven in the prem, Ramires is the only value in the Chelsea midfield.

    Discuss.

+1. Bale, Lamps and Cazorla are all better options atm.

I'd wait to see how L'pool set up. With Allen coming into the fold, Gerrard will probably be pushed further forward behind the front three.

I think they want to flog carroll and are looking to play a 4-3-3 with borini, suarez and gerrard in the middle, then because they have wide playing strikers they can have downing, lucas and allen in the middle, who can be rotated around spearing and henderson 🙂
