The Technical Area – Assessing City’s 3-4-1-2

This evening we bring back our series of “Technical Area” articles which offer tactical insight on a match or team each Gameweek. While the Guardian chalkboards are no more, this season we have built our own maps and charts to feed these articles and to provide a preview of the kind of tools and content available to our members…

Having obtained Opta data from Sunday’s Community Shield match between City and Chelsea, we were all set to analyse each side’s respective systems in terms of Fantasy potential but the dismissal of Branislav Ivanovic weights the head-to-head team comparison too much in Man City’s favour. As a result, we’ve decided to take a look at the league champions’ new 3-4-1-2 formation, as utilised by Roberto Mancini is several pre-season games prior to yesterday’s match – in particular, we focus on the midfield area.

Milner and Kolarov
Looking at City’s average position (below left, top), the system played out more like a 3-2-3-2 yesterday. With Vincent Kompany (4) stationed deep and central, the wide-positioned centre-halves afforded City plenty width at the back, which allowed James Milner (7) and Aleksandar Kolarov (13) to push far forward on the flanks – when in possession, the duo were almost as far up the field as Samir Nasri (19). Indeed, the pair received more passes in the final third of the pitch than any other City players; Milner’s 22 and Kolarov’s 20 were superior to frontmen Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero, with 17 and 14 respectively.

Man City Average Positions

Mancini’s system demands the pair supply plenty of balls from out wide and both delivered time and again; Milner registered 11 crosses and Kolarov 10 but the former’s distribution in the final third was relatively poor. The former Villa man has a lowly 71.4% pass success rate in this area – compare that to Kolarov’s 86.7% or Nasri’s 89.5% and it’s clear that, despite creating four goalscoring opportunities for his team mates (more than any player in yesterday’s match) there was plenty room for improvement in Milner’s contribution.

From a Fantasy perspective, these positions will clearly be crucial to City in the season ahead if Mancini decides to operate with such a system. What also looks essential in order for this formation to flourish is a high work-rate in these key areas. Both players made three tackles each – a tally bettered only by Pablo Zabaleta – while the pair also demonstrated strong aerial ability; Kolarov won four duels in the air, more than any other player yesterday, while Milner was next best with two, alongside Vincent Kompany and Nigel De Jong.

It seems unlikely that Nasri or David Silva will be suited to the wide roles in such a system, then, meaning the pair would likely battle it out for the role in “the hole” behind the front two whenever Mancini rolls out this tactic. With the City boss also playing the likes of Zabaleta and Gael Clichy in the back-three, the versatility of the City full-backs could well prosper from a Fantasy perspective within such a line-up.

Despite Mancini’s post-match uncertainty over the tactics, there’s no doubt the new formation has been a definite hit so far for the Etihad club, with Wigan’s successful implementation of a three-man defence in the second half of last season highlighting its capabilities within the Premier League, if utilised intelligently.

Man City Average Positions

A quick glimpse at City’s shape in their previous encounter against Chelsea (left) highlights the difference. Silva (21) and Nasri (19) were the wide men that day but both have a tendency to cut inside when on the ball and, for all their intricate possession, Mancini’s men lacked any real width further up the field – a criticism that was levelled at the champions on a number of occasions last term. It’s perhaps debatable as to whether this will be their default tactic but it clearly offers City a very strong Plan B, going on yesterday’s performance and result.

Toure and Nasri
As David Silva continued to build up his fitness with a brief cameo yesterday, Yaya Toure and Nasri took the opportunity to grab our Fantasy attention with a goal apiece in the 3-2 win. As the average position map (top, left) highlights, Toure (42) was relatively deep, playing just ahead of Nigel De Jong (34) but he was the beating heart of the City side, making an incredible 100 passes – a statistic that will no doubt catch the eye of Fantasy managers playing the Sky Sports game, bearing in mind the new bonus point system. For all his possession, though, Toure rarely ventured into the final third with any real intent – he made just 10 successful passes in the final third and scored with his only effort, firing home from outside the box after a poor John Terry clearance.

Nasri, however, demonstrated the danger he could carry when playing in “the hole” in this new system. The Frenchman made 17 passes inside Chelsea’s defensive third – the most executed by any City player, with only two of his passes going astray in this vital area. The former Arsenal man also managed two shots on target inside the box; once again, this stat was higher than any of his team mates and, with a goal and assist for his endeavours, he scored 15.3 in our ICT Index, the top mark for Mancini’s side in yesterday’s 3-2 triumph.

Having looked at the midfield, our next step is to analyse the respective displays of Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero within the system in a separate “Versus” article exclusively for Members. With a price difference of 9.0 to 11.5 in FPL, the question of who to plump for is a hot topic on the site right now ahead of Saturday’s rapidly approaching deadline, with Tevez’s goal already boosting his ownership considerably over the past 24 hours.

    Who’s game enough to captain Hazard…. 🙂

Have high hope for this boy… But was he really that bad against Man C? Could anyone fill me in?

      not me!

tbh he wasn't that bad. saw a fair bit of the ball, had a long range shot or two. embarrassed himself trying too hard with a backheel. it's the nature of the position, you have to try different things and people will get frustrated if it goes wrong - a bit like nani really.

    Options:

    A Hart+(4m), Vidic, Hang, Bale, Tevez +0.5m

B DDG+(4.5m), Lescott, Hughes, Sigg, Augero

    Tevez is swaying me!

    What do people think?

I agree that DDG will get some rest, but less than last season. That is why I am having a playing GK with him. But zaba is nailed on for at least a month, and was preferred to Richards at the end of last season. So I feel comfortable having him at least for the first 3 games.

DDG will be rotated at times. So will Zabs. The same can't be said for Vidic and Hart. So it's not exactly the same but hey ho that's why they aren't the same price.

    Thoughts on version 2,487?

Cech/Cerny (planning to sell Cech after GW1 and then use Vorm through Swansea's first 8)
    Cole/Rangel/Hangeland/McCartney/Hooiveld
    VDV/Siggy/Pienaar/Allen/Guthrie

Price is the main thing for many peoples 5th mid, as he will sit on the bench most weeks. Naildonness is important too. He will also chip in with a few goals and assists and could well take some set pieces. I would place a bet now that he will be the highest scoring of the 4.5m mids come the end of the season.

The important thing is that he is the equivalent of Ferguson (ie pure bench sitter), but worth the extra 0.5 m as he will actually play and score some points, in case he is needed.

Nothing better than a cheap bench sitter, who actually has decent scoring potential in the rare event he is called upon! Means you other mids have to play most games though, so best to have ones with good runs of fixtures

    Little dilemma for ye!

    A - Friedel / Aguero / Kaca or Marveaux
    B - De Gea / Tevez / NZogbia

    Leaning towards B.

Also 2 differentials at cheap prices I have noticed which may look good in a few months:

    1) Craig Gardner - Still no new striker and no Sessegnon for Sunderland. Playing in the hole, can strike a ball, possible clean sheet and assist points, does pick up cards though - 5.0m

    2) Kieron Dyer - Cheap, plenty of pace and movement up front to create gaps to run into, can score goals and get assists, obviously not nailed on nor is he ever fit but if you are filling that 5th midfield spot with a 4.5 to sit on your bench he has the potential to rise in price and hit form (didn't think I'd ever say that!)

I think a better idea for a nice little earner is Marveaux. He has been very impressive in pre-season and is likely to play for the first few gameweeks while the rest of the Newcastle squad recover from their various ailments. If he scores a couple his price will rocket and the casuals will pick him up, not realising that his days are numbered.

China Mag - can you verify this?

Personally not going near either Dyer or Gardner but just pointing out 2 possibles for people that haven't been mentioned in the usual list of FFS bandwagons!

I think B is better option for me but scared of leaving both Aguero and Silva out of the equation (especially Silva since he saved me last year!)

Agree completely on Marveaux I think he'll turn out to be a massive bargain this year. Currently have Robson Kanu as my 4.5 but leaning towards a change. Think I'm over estimating the DGW from a Reading perspective. I think everyone is with Fed in goals. Yes he will play twice but I think everyone with their Chelsea captains would prefer them to concede handfuls!

First team listing for the season for me...

    Mignolet Green
    Alcaraz Hangeland Clyne Tierney Pearce
    Hazard VdV Cazorla Michu Noble
    Tevez Rooney Bent.

Considering if I should start with Lampard instead of VdV for gw1.. But keep thinking this dgw is gonna shit our face with a goalless game or something...

I like the front line, but the midfield is a complete bag of punts. Also I would downgrade a midfielder (as you have such a good forward line) to get some decent defenders at the back. Also at 4.5 Cuellar would make you defence stronger for little cost.

Id advise against it. Hazard looks like he will take time to bed-in, Cazorla is more of a creative player than an explosive goalscorer and also has alot of competition. Michu may be OK but will get nowhere near the amount of goals people predict IMO.

At 4.5 he isn't much of a risk..
      A filler if anything..
And he makes it possible to have a midfield of, Bale, Ramires, Mata, Cazorla, Kaz..
Not bad at all I think..

For me if he starts regularly it's a bonus..

      My question,
      A, Rooney, Graham, Ramires
      B, Tevez, Pogs, Mata

The whole point in a "filler" is that he wi play when you other players can't. Its not like he is this years feeguson that saves you extra cash, there are plenty of options at that price that will at least get you gametime whenever you need to call on them. Guthrie et al would still get you the same midfield but with a player that will actually play when needed.

Can you answer my question to where you think he will play then?

Maybe Yaya to Noble/Maloney/Ryo/Gibson/Ireland/Kightly and then Petric to Bent/Jelavic?

Fairly happy with my team but a few Chelsea related questions remain:
1)to Torres or not to Torres?
    2) who to captain - current choices lamps/Torres/aguero?
    3) Ramires or a Chelsea def?

Currently leaning towards getting and captaining Torres and Ramires over a Chelsea def.

I strongly believe in covering my ass, which is why I'll cap'n Torres, and vice Aguero. One Chelsea cs might see a Chelsea def get as much as Ramires over the 2 games, so I'd plump for a def methinks. Rarely works out as I'd like, but seems sensible to me.

id only have one and graham out of that lot. id also rate sinclair and dyer ahead of michu. there are 3 good options at fair prices for swansea, just dont see the need to risk michu. i have a hunch he winds up in most teams simply because managers put a team together and find themselves with 6.5, a mid spot open, and no swansea coverage. id rather have dyer and spend the extra mil elsewhere.

Doosra, whats up with Noble. No longer nailed on with Diarra and Diame in the team?

I think he is - but there is dissension in the ranks! May have to have a few shot. 😉

I believe Nolan will lose out - no pace. 🙂

If Nolan was dropped would this mean with Diarra & Diame would both start and therefore push Noble further up the pitch slightly?

Yaya plays too deep to be considered and I wouldn't go with Dempsey until his future is sorted. Who are your subs?
