Moving Target

Moving Target – Dimitar Berbatov

While many of the more established clubs failed to appease their fans on transfer deadline day, Martin Jol handed Fulham’s supporters plenty to cheer about with the capture of Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United. The Bulgarian moves to Craven Cottage on a two-year deal reportedly worth £5m and reunites with Jol, having previously worked under the Dutchman at Tottenham:

Having been frozen out at United, the move gives Berbatov the chance to reignite his Premier League career after a difficult previous season harvested a mere five starts for the Old Trafford club. Knocking back a possible move to Serie A, with both Fiorentina and Juventus keen, the 31-year-old revealed his relief following completion of the transfer:

As soon as I was aware of Fulham’s interest my decision to join was an easy one to make. I’m impressed with the set up here and the people have made me feel welcome. There is a close and personal feel around the club and I can’t wait to get started.

The Statistics

Berbatov’s career began in his native country where, after scoring 77 goals in 92 games for the Pirin Blagoevgrad reserves as a youth, he was snapped up by CSKA Sofia. Making his debut as an 18-year-old, his step up to top level football was seamless, with 26 goals in 49 league games over two-and-a-half seasons at the club before Bayer Leverkusen came calling midway during the 2000-01 campaign.

Berbatov spent six years with the Bundesliga outfit and, while the first half of his tenure was relatively successful with 11 goals and nine assists from 54 appearances, the latter part was outstanding – his final 100 games in Germany harvested 57 goals and 24 assists before Tottenham came calling in May 2006. The Bulgarian’s time at White Hart Lane lasted just a couple of seasons, though; striking up a partnership with Robbie Keane, he flourished under Jol first time round with 27 goals and 15 assists in 69 league games and was snapped up by United on transfer deadline day in a sensational £30m swoop.

Of his four seasons at Old Trafford, only one – the 2010-11 campaign – can be classified as a real success from a personal perspective. With 20 goals that term, Berbatov was the joint-top scorer in the top-flight, with the particular Fantasy highlight being a five-goal haul against Steve Kean’s Blackburn in November 2010. Edged towards the periphery last term, with Danny Welbeck preferred as Wayne Rooney’s regular partner, Berbatov’s fate was finally sealed this summer after the arrival of Robin Van Persie from Arsenal. His record at United stands at 48 goals and 20 assists from 108 league appearances and, with seven goals in 12 games last term, it’s clear he’s far from a finished Fantasy force.

The Prospects

Judging by Fulham’s form under Jol last term, it could well be that Berbatov’s potential is mainly restricted to home games. While the Cottagers racked up 36 goals at home in 2011-12 – only three less than Spurs and Arsenal – they were dire on their travels, scoring 12 times away from home all season. It was a situation that, to a certain extent, made Clint Dempsey a frustrating purchase, though the US international more than made up for his away blanks with goals aplenty at home.

At present, it’s too early to judge what role Berbatov will be handed for his new club. His creativity could make him the ideal foil for Mladen Petric, with the Bulgarian positioned in “the hole” behind but, with Hugo Rodallega also coming into the equation, Jol’s intentions are still unclear. The former Wigan man was handed the full 90 minutes at West Ham last weekend, while Berbatov replaced Petric at the break; the latter, of course, has already produced in his only home game this season and is far and away the most popular of the three across the Fantasy games.

Penalty duties look up for grabs, with Berbatov perhaps first in line to prosper. Last season’s number one and two, Danny Murphy and Dempsey, have now moved on and the Bulgarian’s nonchalance from the spot would certainly boost his appeal. Reasonable prices of 6.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game are also likely to tempt further – particularly at home, Jol will be relying on Berbatov to bring a spark of real quality to his attack as the Cottagers readjust to life without Dempsey and Moussa Dembele.

With five goals in their opening home fixture compared to two in two matches on the road, the Cottagers seem to have quickly settled into a repeat pattern of last season. The chance for points looks good, then, ahead of home clashes against West Brom and Villa in the next six, while away trips to (wig, sot, rdg) are as kind a run as Jol could wish for. Certainly, with Berbatov on board, it’s a schedule that Fulham won’t be approaching with any lack of confidence.

I took a 12 pts hit last week to bring in RVP, Tevez, (the others were for £ to afford these 2)
I don't think you've got enough big hitters on the "IN"side to warrant a 12 pointer

Taarabt has to go but there are better options than Johnson I would say. For me, Pienaar is the man in that price bracket for the coming weeks - slight concern over his knock but we'll see about that next week.

I´ve decided to bring in Hazard. Here's my front 8:

    Bale - Cazorla - Yaya - Michu - Noble
    Tevez - Ba - Graham

I've got 5,4m in the bank.

    I was thinking either A) Bale -> Haz (4,8m bank) or B) Noble -> Haz (0,4m bank)

Option B) would probably be followed up by getting RVP in two GW's time. Option A) would probably be followd up by waiting for Rooney to come back and get him in.

So what option do you like more?

Any other option u see fit? (Except for Wildcarding, not gonna)

    Cheers.

Hmm Berbatov did look class at the weekend. Think i'm going to hold onto Petric for another week or 2 at least and see what happens there. If the Fulham forwards' game time is divided up then will probably opt for someone like Lambert. If Berbatov starts doing the business or just shows promise and plays 75+ minutes then it's an easy decision, and the fact that Fulham are poor away makes their players more appealing imo, an easy bench decision when you've got a fifth mid with a decent fixture.

Berba is a gamble at the moment and RVP seems to be a requirement. I'd consider downgrading Baines, Be Arfa to fund Berba>RVP. Also think there's better options than Schwarzer.

I'm slightly leaning towards Lambert, Soton seem to be all about scoring one more than the opposition, a similar sort of tactic to Holloway at Blackpool two seasons back. I'm not sure too many teams will score 4 goals against the Manchester Clubs, save two penalties and still lose.

And also the new signing Ramirez will look to have a positive impact on Lamber, most likely playing in behind him, and capitalising on Lambert's knock-downs.

Depends on your midfield to an extent. Do you really want to be playing your ~£6m striker regardless of home/away/fixture, or are they part of a rotation strategy?

If you have a rotation worthy midfield I think getting to play Berba at home (and keep in mind we don't know how he's going to perform away from home yet) every other week than be stuck playing Lambert no matter what.

Great to see Berbatov given official coverage here. A proud moment for all Berba gravs.

Right. The Cazorla question. Given their upcoming fixtures I believe asking "Should I get Cazorla?" Is equivalent to asking "is Arsenal's attack fixture proof?". Of course, if I went and told you it was, surely you'd laugh at me with a goal return of 0, 0, 2 against SUN sto liv. As a Gooner I firmly believe this is below its potential, but it won't happen overnight so combined with the fixtures getting Cazorla looks somewhere down the list of priorities.

Those results and fixtures imply that they are fixture proof to an extent, as they scored twice in what (on paper) was the hardest of the three games.

Although I agree that Santi is not my No.1 priority yet.

The thing is the Liverpool defence is absolutely awful. 8 goals conceded in 3 and many were just shambolic goals as opposed to any brilliance in attack. I think their attack could still come good, but in terms of teams to score against even Kenny was miles improved.

I've been cheerleader for Cazorla even before he arrived at Arsenal - for me the question is not him but the movement and finishing of the forwards - lots of convincing remains to be done there!

That's a fair point. But you could also argue that Cazorla is a 'big game' player, and City and Chelsea's defence is far from secure.

We are more likely to score against Chewls and City as opposed to Sunderland and Stoke who just parked the bus. He's creating, he's on set pieces, he's taking shot for fun, get him before everyone else does.

I'm not sure I agree - I think it took 3 games bedding in period and it's coming to fruition.
Sun and Stoke aren't easy to score against. Liverpool normally offer stiffer opposition but I think Wenger may have found a decent formula. Diaby was immense and he allowed Cazorla to perform

The real question is "how confident are you in City/Chelsea defence?".

Arsenal don't need to win for it to still be a good week for Santi, fantasy-wise.

I wouldn't like to have any of those teams defenders mind.

It's fair to say Cazorla could get decent points in the coming weeks. Getting him right now implies he is the best option right now though, and I think that's very unconvincing. I'd put him in the one to watch category as opposed to must have now.

It's also cus he scored that goal, it's knee-jerk, have one look at who scored and GET THAT GUY. Same with McCauley, although I think he's a good option, bit annoying that he's going to rise actually, no goal would have kept him at 5 for a while. Guess it will keep Ridgewell at 5 now.

That's a nice team, but I wouldn't WC if it were me. But I really wanna keep mine, you might be better off doing it.

You already have: Michu, Tevez, Dyer, Hazard and 2 forwards who could do well, I'd choose one of RVP/Cisse and get RVP with a hit.

might be better off wildcarding though, I dunno, it's a close call.

If Giroud doesn't score against Southampton, the decision to pick him is going to haunt me all season. I wish I'd spent more time pre-season picking my team, I didn't get round to it til the day before and assumed Giroud would be the main source of goals for Arsenal with 4 decent opening fixtures, plus everyone was getting Podolski over him. Who knew it would take Arsenal 3 games to score a goal...My other big regret is ever going near QPR players...it actually makes me sick thinking about it. Oh and not getting Swansea coverage basically because I read in a paper that some journo thought Swansea would struggle and Laudrup would be sacked first. I hate that journo now...whoever he was.
