Watchlist

The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 12

Once again, Merseyside pair Marouane Fellaini and Luis Suarez continue to climb in the Watchlist rankings, with their respective form just too good to ignore, in spite of the fact they are both a single caution away from a one-match ban. Dimitar Berbatov and Juan Mata are also on the rise, while four home fixtures in the next five Gameweeks has Sunderland’s defensive assets leap in our estimations…

Goalkeepers

Despite the clean sheet in the 1-0 win over QPR, we find Stoke’s Asmir Begovic toppled from the top spot when it comes to our long-term planning. The Stoke stopper still has strong form and fixtures to justify acquisition, although with three away trips in five, his prospects take a dip.

Sunderland’s Simon Mignolet is the new target between the sticks. Like Stoke, the Black Cats are basing success on a resolute back four unit, having conceded just 11 goals this term to Stoke’s 10. Sunderland’s fixtures are that bit stronger than Stoke’s, with the allure of a double Gameweek now on the horizon. As a result, Mignolet has four home matches in the next five Gameweeks, making him an obvious leading candidate for those looking to tweak between the sticks.

Tim Krul is your main rotation option with Mignolet given that he offers perfect home and away cover with the Belgian. Newcastle’s back four will receive better protection now that Chieck Tiote is back from his ban, although with Fabricio Coloccini still facing two more matches out, reservations will remain.

QPR’s Julio Cesar is perhaps a better option to partner Mignolet in the short-term; he offers home matches with Southampton this weekend and Aston Villa in Gameweek 15 to coincide with Mignolet’s away trips. The Brazilian also makes a decent acquisition in his own right for those looking for a swap on a budget.

David De Gea is the clear choice for those looking to spend in this position, with his starting role in the United XI seemingly secure for now. It perhaps looks a safer bet to wait for several of the uncertainties to be settled, however. Right now, it’s unclear as to whether Wojciech Szczęsny will make a return to the Gunners goal as number one this weekend, while the Southampton, Liverpool and Reading keeper situation is also in flux due to injuries and absentees. Once they clear, there are likely to be more alternatives available.

Defenders

Attacking returns and bonus points continue to keep Leighton Baines ticking along to justify his selection at the top of our defender rankings. In truth, the competition isn’t yet fierce enough to threaten him, right now. United’s Rafael keeps pushing to make a claim with continued attacking menace and strong fixtures but, with just one clean sheet in the last seven outings, Sir Alex Ferguson’s back four is just not reliable.

Sunderland’s Carlos Cuellar comes into our thinking as we prepare for the Gameweek 16 double; we don’t expect much from the trip to Craven Cottage this weekend but, after that, returns on four home games in the next five Gameweeks look likely.

Below this there are slim pickings. Newcastle’s back four is wavering without Coloccini, while Robert Huth and Emmerson Boyce are struggling to fetch the attacking returns that warrant the outlay. The budget route continues to look the most favourable with Ryan Nelsen, Kaspar Gorkss, Nathaniel Clyne and Ben Davies all offering regular starts – Villa’s Ciaran Clark could be a decent mid-term punt for those looking for the threat of attacking returns.

Midfielders

Despite the looming threat of a one-match ban, Marouane Fellaini’s ascendency has him claim the Watchlist top spot off the back of outstanding form. The Belgian is currently the biggest bandwagon across the Fantasy games but it’s difficult to question the merits of acquiring a player who has provided more goal threat than all but two strikers in the league this season.

Santi Cazorla slips down the rankings, then, damaged by the emergence of both Theo Walcott and Oliver Giroud as coverage of Arsenal’s attacking potential. Both Juan Mata and Raheem Sterling climb above the Gunners man with form on Mata’s side and fixtures and price boosting Sterling over the coming weeks. Arguably the 17-year-old demands selection over a number of heavy-hitters, given his role up front with Luis Suarez in an improving side with obliging opponents to come.

Antonio Valencia is your highest differential in the rankings – he threatens to overtake a stuttering Gareth Bale given United’s fixtures, although the obvious coverage offered by Robin Van Persie will likely keep Valencia from making our top five this season.

City’s David Silva and Arsenal’s Theo Walcott are other names threatening to break up the template midfields and may tempt some early adopters. Silva is perhaps the most interesting option as he offers an alternative to both Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez to free up a precious slot in our forward line.

Forwards

There’s no moving Robin Van Persie ahead of his run of incredibly favourable fixtures that will surely promise further heavy returns. Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, another on the verge of a one-match ban, is Van Persie’s nearest rival right now, with similarly strong fixtures and form in his favour. Fulham’s Dimitar Berbatov completes the top three – while his fixtures are against him, Saturday’s brace at the Emirates proved that Fulham’s attacking verve and the Bulgarian’s class are hard to resist – regardless of opposition. Berbatov’s price surely cements him as the third striker option of choice.

There’s a world of uncertainty below this with Demba Ba stuttering somewhat with just a single goal in five starts, while question marks remain over the potency and security of the City frontline after recent struggles. That keeps both Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez out of our top three, with Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud threatening a further climb if he can build on the confidence boosting brace in the 3-3 with Fulham.

Rickie Lambert is revived by strong fixtures in the budget bracket, with Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher also returning to the radar as his double Gameweek approaches.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Stuck at bottom of last page - repost:

    Jussi (Foster)
Baines / Rafael / Ivanovic (Davies) (Cameron)
Mata / Felliani / Michu / Bale (Guthrie)
    RVP / Berba / Crouch

Looking to get Suarez in for Crouch before he goes up again tonight and downgrade Bale for 6.5 or less midfielder (-4 hit) – any ideas? Sterling feels like too much invested in pool, but no one else is standing out..

    Dilemma.
Assuming that with form and fixtures in his favour, Suarez takes precedence over getting in Mata/Hazard..
Currently happy with my defence and keepers so getting Suarez in means losing a midfielder and Ba.
    I'm lined out as such..
    Noble, Fellaini, Cazorla, Bale, Sterling
    Ba, Berbatov, RVP.

    Should I do a) Bale > Silva/Mata/Hazard
Or should I do b) Ba and Bale > Suarez and Michu..

Tough one.. the 'cover' argument would that you already have sterling and I think the safer option is to get chelsea coverage in (Mata) plus Ba's fixtures are good even if form isn't.

That being said Suarez is on fire (til he picks up another yellow) and I'm going to go there myself. Higher risk but potentially higher reward.

For me if it's for B) is for a hit I'd play safe and just get Chelsea coverage in A).

        Thanks for the response!
Thinking along the same lines, then pick up Suarez when he serves his one game for the 5th yellow.
Mata and Suarez have to be my two biggest regrets, for not taking hits to get them in and hoping their form would stop.

Hmm, wait until Friday on that if you can afford to

            I have 4 options

            1) Save

            2) Drop Hangeland (potentially falling in price)

            3) Swap Jelly for Suarez (no Fellaini, and Suarez 1 yc away from a ban, but rising)

            4) Sell Kebe, (easy to bench, but Morrison potentially injured)

                Shorey or Gorrks

Issue with Jelly is his next 2 and I only have Baines.

After all of the stats analysis and complex comparisons, I'm realizing it really comes down to having the main attacking player at the highest scoring clubs, whatever the position. And generally #1 is the only one worth having, #2 doesn't even come close.

    So looking at each club:
United: Marginally RVP though spread out.
City: too spread out, possibly Silva ultimately.
Chelsea: too spread out, marginally Mata.
Spurs: too spread out, WAS Defoe
Arsenal: too spread out, possibly Giroud ultimately
    Everton: Fellaini
    Fulham: Berbatov
    Brom: Morrison
    Liverpool: Suarez
    West Ham: Nolan
    Newcastle: Ba
    Reading: too spread out
    Swansea: Michu
    Villa: Benteke
    Wigan: Kone
Southampton: too spread out, WAS Lambert

Left out a couple because they're barely worth considering in attack.

I think Maloney is equal to Kone for his potential. I really like Maloney this year and I might swap Sterling for him later.

Oh and leaving out Bale here is criminal.

        For Southampton,

        it's Lalllana, Ramirez and Lambert/Rodriguez

        For West Brom

An injury to one of their strikers and one of them could step up to become significant in FPL

The whole point here is that you don't wanna settle for #2. There is no evidence that bale is the #1 threat at spurs, quite the contrary based on a good 10 weeks of scoring actually. You can't have three #1s at Southampton. Long has had periods of being the main Brom striker and is respectable though unspectacular

Good point, I still feel Bale is potentially NO.1 at Spurs maybe trailed by Dempsey in terms of 'own-ability' The problem is Bale is a winger and not central like Dempsey. I think that will be significant over the season. Dempsey is even more attacking than Van Der Vaart arguably because that's all he seems to do is poach around the box.

The key is that we know Bale has the potential to be no.1. Currently he is not though. So question marks do hang around his head.

We all know his explosiveness yep. Under Harry I think he was level with Ade as joint frontrunners, not #1 overall. Obviously with their goals both were good options. Have a horrible feeling that that was under Harry, and AVB has made the pie smaller and given bale a smaller slice.

Yeah Dempsey was fantasy gold last year because he's so greedy, unfortunately for him I think spurs as a whole are misfiring in attack, who knows, partly because he's not creative? I hope they misfire against arsenal on Saturday anyway. Lols.

Yeah he's hardly the most creative player is he. But I bet you he goes on a good run and starts tempting people on here. Especially if it coincides with a lull in form for Bale.

Bale, a bit like Rooney goes through streaks of 5 or 6 games with great points, then almost the same period of nothingness although Rooney, when a striker would have less lean spells. Cazorla isn't in FF long enough to decide if he, eventually hopeful, he'll break out and be a points machine. My own opinion is he'll be a Wilshere or Modric. You'll watch him play a game see how class and influential he is but his FF points will be shite 🙁

It is, so you just fill up your front 8 with whichever 8 you think will be the most pivotal. The prices aren't expensive so you won't have to totally compromise your defence. Then you pick the defenders from the most solid teams (which again aren't the most expensive ones. You even choose between defenders from the same team based on which is pivotal in attack.

But I take your point, it is predicting those who WILL be pivotal that is tricky. We have hindsight here. Personally, I will jump on bandwagons sooner if I start seeing one guy involved in everything, regardless of price. I mistakenly avoided Nolan and fellaini because they looked too cheap.

Based on this team and getting Suarez for Crouch is Bale definitely the weakest link I should replace or should I do the unthinkable and replace Baines? Need to make up 3.1M so limited change options!

    Jussi (Foster)
Baines / Rafael / Ivanovic (Davies) (Cameron)
Mata / Felliani / Michu / Bale (Guthrie)
    RVP / Berba / Crouch

I'd be more receptive to it if it wasn't for the 4 yellows believe me. He's a spaniard and his style of play is a cut above your average centre mid. He's good at set pieces and I can see him getting assists because of his adeptness as passing and I'm sure the tables show this. But as he is more defensive the likelihood of him picking up that yellow soon is probably stronger than say Michu/Suarez etc. So I'd wait if I were you to avoid disappointment.

    SUN: ful -218 WBA -24 QPR 221 nor -64 ( CHE -149 RDG 94 ) = -140
    STK: whm -121 FUL 18 NEW -63 wba -214 avl -28 = -408

    Correct!

    I want to:

A: Bring in Mignolet (Etherington is wasting a space)
B: Downgrade Boyce to save some cash
C: Transfer out Hazard for someone (Sterling, Silva or Valencia)
D: Get rid of Guthrie (there's always a more pressing transfer)
E: Squeeze Suarez into RVP, Berbatov, Jelavic frontline.

Too many things to do, not enough transfers, already used this week to get Fellaini pre-price rises.

Which order should I prioritise these for next week?
