Digest

The Digest – The Christmas Catch-Up

With four matches in fourteen days, there’s almost too much to digest. Bloated by a feast of football, we nonetheless take time to consider the headline acts, examining the impact of the Emirates flyer, the resurgence on Merseyside and glance, with some expectancy, through the January window…

The Player

Like an impetuous child, Theo Walcott has been tugging at Arsene Wenger’s shirt tails for an opportunity to lead the Arsenal attack; it was surely no coincidence that this finally arrived as contract negotiations with the club reached deadlock. Arsene Wenger relented and deployed Walcott up front in the 5-2 win at Reading, a performance which was dominated by Santi Cazorla’s hat-trick but nonetheless provided a taster of what was to come over the Christmas from the fleet-heeled winger turned striker.

Walcott chipped in with a goal aginast the Royals, following that up with a dubious assist for Mikel Arteta’s spot-kick winner at Wigan. However, the explosion came against Newcastle, as Walcott delivered a Fantasy haul to surpass Cazola’s Reading effort and any in living memory. A hat-trick and two assists ensured that Walcott would come out of the busy four Gameweek spell as the hottest of midfield properties, a status cemented by his assist at Southampton – giving him returns in every match.

With a double fixture beckoning in Gameweek 23, continued investment in Walcott’s new found potential as a striker is surely set to continue. For midfielders, only Marouane Felliani has seen more transfers in so far this week and it’s expected that interest in Walcott will accelerate in the build up to the double with Chelsea and West Ham. Subsequently, we’ve seen Cazorla’s stock and ownership in decline, just three weeks after his biggest score of the season.

Despite struggling at St Mary’s last time out, Walcott’s performance can be excused amongst an abject Arsenal display and, should Olivier Giroud start up front in the FA Cup tie with Swansea this weekend, it will surely assure Walcott a run at the City defence for Gameweek 22. Walcott has been an inconsistent performer in the past but, with a price tag hovering below 9.0 and an explosive quality that can match even Robin Van Persie, the case for acquisition is convincing.

The Team

While United have won every game over the Christmas spell, it is the rise of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool that offered the biggest new attraction for Fantasy managers. Luis Suarez’s status was already assured, if somewhat damaged by a run of blanks over five Gameweeks going into the Christmas spell. The Uruguayan has emerged from that period in spectacular style, to lead the race for the Golden Boot and, along with Theo Walcott, stand out as the top performer of the past four Gameweeks.

While Suarez’s form was signposted, the consistency offered by Steven Gerrard in midfield and Brendan Rodgers’ defence seemed less likely. The Liverpool skipper has been superb – probing and prompting alongside the rotating Lucas, Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson, Gerrard has returned a goal or assist in six straight league matches and has reinstated himself as a heavy-hitting midfield option to rival the likes of David Silva, Juan Mata and Gareth Bale.

With Suarez ablaze, Gerrard will doubtless be overlooked by many but that may not be the case with the assured Liverpool back four. With Martin Skrtel and Dan Agger settled as one of the more formidable centre-back pairings, Rodgers has few concerns in this area and, in Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique, he has full-backs with the attacking verve to contribute high up the field. Enrique’s hamstring injury at QPR was a cruel twist for his owners and has seen Johnson now emerge as perhaps the preferred recruitment route in Liverpool’s resolute rearguard.

Investment in this flourishing group of players does come with a sizeable caveat, however. Liverpool now face three away trips in four, taking in visits to United, Arsenal and Man City around a potentially more profitable Anfield clash with Norwich. That calls for caution, particularly when it comes to defensive acquisitions. Suarez, however, appears to have little regard for opposition and has the form that could possibly de-rail both United on City as they vie for superiority at the summit, with Liverpool simmering nicely below.

The Talking Point

We now enter a key transitional period in the Fantasy season. Three key factors arrive at once, with players departing for the African Cup of Nations, others moving clubs or arriving on the Premier League scene and, against this backdrop of uncertainty, we keenly clutch our Winter Widlcards.

We shouldn’t forget that, at this time last season, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Papiss Cisse arrived to change the Fantasy landscape. Both had pedigree but few could have foreseen the impact they would have at Swansea and Newcastle respectively, or how they would emerge as almost essential Fantasy purchases over the second half of the season.

Having witnessed such events, Fantasy managers will be anticipating the closure of the transfer window at the end of this month and scouring for similar solutions. It seems unlikely we’ll see players arrive who can hit the ground running with such ease, but perhaps a transfer like Daniel Sturridge’s move to Liverpool, examined in our earlier “Moving Target” article, will be the catalyst for change.

While new arrivals and big money moves will grab the headlines, it could be a simple loan deal or perhaps the departure of a key player, providing the opportunity for an understudy, that could offer us a bargain.

Those chasing mini-league gaps will be craving a shake-up – the arrival of new prospects and the unearthing or rebirth of an exciting talent. Those protecting leads will pray that the status quo remains intact. After all, the current crop of league leaders are often less likely to explore the risks on offer; the transfer window can therefore hand their rivals a lifeline if complacency or security breeds hesitation.

We’re entering a fascinating period, which, like the hectic Christmas schedule, can turn a Fantasy season on its head if the stars align and Fantasy managers can time their trades to catch the new opportunities on offer.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The 3-5-2 formation is intriguing. Here's one possibility for me
    Demel Baines Vert
    Walcott Mata Michu Bale Fell
    Berba RVP

I like the idea but it's a bit scary to think about playing that without much of a bench.

TW, while our squad isn't as good as the top clubs, its not actually terrible. its just that we have been REALLY unlucky with injuries. If we buy debuchy, a centre back and remy, then this would be our second 11. Added to these, we have a number of other promising youngsters, bigi, ferguson, gosling, vuckic, tavernier, campbell. I would say that the below team would be a match for at least half of the other teams second 11's.

    ------------------Harper---------
    Simpson--Willo--?--Raylor
    ------ Perchinio--Jonas----
    --------------Marveaux---------

Ha. i'm not saying its great by any stretch of the imagination. It would get destroyed by any of the top teams in the premier second 11, never mind barca.

But my point is that we have a first 11 good enough to challenge for a top 4 spot, and a squad good enough for the top half, so really we should be finishing anywhere between 4th - 10th depending on how injuries work out

NB Injuries have already messed up this season, so I will settle for 7th.

On the flipside, Bale has qpr MUN so who knows if he will explode.

I saw you guys were talking on the previous page. We do not need Neymar. Also, Deufoleu needs another season or two. Where is Pedro in there? And Villa? Messi, Pedro, Villa is still our best starting forward 3 with Alexis close behind.

I don't rate Tello and Cuenca much - if they weren't at Barcelona, they wouldn't have much success. Do you remember Giovanni Dos Santos?

of course we don't need him, but he would be a nice addition :D. yeah he forgot pedro. and villa should be starting more. but we were talking about 3-4 years from now. not sure villa would be a starter at that point as he'd be getting older and pedro, sanchez, cuenca, tello and deufoleu would all have a lot more experience.

i guess you're right. I've liked what i've seen from tello when he's played, though he has been too wasteful in front of goal. think he's got good potential though

I think tello will have sucess, but cuenca i'm not so sure !
We were talking about our dream 3 upfront, that's why we didn't add pedro, sanchez and villa
When Villa will be entirely ready, he'll be starting every game for sure !

Tello is very fast, but not polished. Also, very selfish. Cuenca has a good delivery from the wing, but he doesn't have nearly the class to be a long term Barca player.

Time will tell. So far so good this season. As long as we have Messi, the rest is almost irrelevant 😀

Indeed. I can't blame Dos Santos, though. He wanted more money and more first team football. He had the self-belief that he can have that at Spurs. Turned out to be a disastrous decision, and maybe he will come back one day.

I hope so at least 😀 Be great if he did manage to kick start his career properly. The real tragedy is Assulin, such a gifted player but those injuries really did take a toll. At least he's still young, maybe he'll become the player he has the potential to be.

Sanchez scored some big goals for us, especially against Madrid, but I feel he never really fit into our style. Not so bad as Ibrahimovic, but still - he has always been a bit off. His injury record is also not great. His goalscoring record is also not great.

I personally can't see Villa go. He will hit good form in the second half of the season and he is in his prime. He is the best Spanish forward and he belongs in Barcelona.

true. yeah he's always been a little bit off.

I would hate to see him go, and yeah i'm really hoping he'll get more regular time and start banging them in. we need one of or forwards to be the second top scorer in the team behind messi, not cesc (though cesc's play and contributions have been very good this year). but given his age, couldn't you see Villa being sold/let go if we were to buy neymar given all the young talent we have coming up too?

Villa is 31 - he is arguably at the peak age for a forward. I am hoping his injury didn't have a permanent effect on his ability to turn and accelarete, but only time will tell. I think he has 2-3 good years left at Barcelona. Henry was 33 when he scored 20+ goals for us a few years ago.

I understand why people are selling Silva...they won't more explosiveness from a big-hitting midfielder. But he has finally found form, he is nailed on, and he delivers consistent returns with the occasional big haul. Surely, he is a good pick?

There are just too many good midfield options right now, a real selection headache.

Me and Mrs China Mag like to keep the players in our teams different. At least at the start of the season. But at this stage, with mini league leads to preserve, it would be self defeating to continue that for the winter WC. Which players do we view as absolutely essential? ie which players should both teams have. And which others should be shared between the two teams? I'll start:

Essential: Begovic, Wilson (if fit), Michu, Fellaini, RVP
To be shared: Bale Mata Walcott Santi Suarez Aguero

Bale is certainly close to being essential for me. But unless I go for the cheapie forward option, I can't get both him and mata (alongside fellaini and michu).

One squad I am looking at RVP Aguero Suarez

for the other i am thinking of something like RVP Dave, Berba, and have a power midfield

        Wilson Demel Davies Turner Clyne

This defense would only face the top 6, 6 times between GW24 - 38, and they would be at home.

that front 8 looks very similar to about 50 others....so nobody can be too critical
Sagna would prove a cheaper Gooner defender to allow an uplift to one of the others?

OHH YES he will, he developps well, but if you are surrounded by xavi-iniesta-cesc-busquets you have to somehow developp as a footballer !

7 of the top 9 transfers in this week are players already in my team. A lot of teams will be tediously similar by the end of WC, I guess defences will still look quite varied, so it will be essential to make good (lucky) defender picks.

well, that too, yes. Anyway, I think if I have a close decision between players when I use WC, I'll go for the least owned one.

This questioning Suarez is ridiuculous imo.
Surely the investment in another high quality forward can only further his potential returns.
Suarez to the left or right of a front three is as, if not more dangerous than Suarez through the middle,
The acquisition of Sturridge has done nothing but cement my belief in keeping Suarez through my WC this month.

Brendan will learn him how to pass.

Suarez scores many of his goals coming from wide so this move could take the pressure of him & give him more freedom to find the pockets of space.......exciting front line!

Totally agree with you here. He has held the ship up for many weeks with his football brilliance and that won't change no matter who they bring in. Liv need coverage up front since the transfer shambles.

Dropping 12 places with 75 points...competition is steep. Basically got overtaken by a bunch of guys who had Zabaleta/O'Brien compared to my own 4 point defence. Think I'm going to invest in a big defender for the season come WC, maybe even Kompany when fit.
