Pre-Season

Sleeper – Micah Richards

The previous season was one to forget for Micah Richards. Having served up a series of rampaging runs down the flank in City’s title-winning 2011/12 campaign, the right-back was more accustomed to the treatment room than the Etihad turf after a couple of injuries made a significant impact on his game time:

Sidelined at the start of the campaign after picking up an ankle problem on Olympic duty with Great Britain, Richards’s absence afforded Pablo Zabaleta the chance to nail down the right-back role at the Etihad last time round. Returning to the first-team in Gameweek 7, Richards helped Roberto Mancini’s side register two clean sheets in three appearances – their first of the season – before being stretchered from the field in the Gameweek 9 home win over Swansea with knee ligament damage.

Despite his manager’s claims that the knee injury was only a short-term worry, Richards underwent surgery and subsequently failed to make another league appearance until Gameweek 32, in a narrow home win over Wigan. The right-back managed to force his way back into first-team contention over the club’s final few fixtures and, having started each of the last three Gameweeks of the season, ended the campaign with five clean sheets from just seven appearances in what ultimately proved a hugely underwhelming title defence for the Etihad outfit.

The Prospects

With Mancini now gone, it remains to be seen just what will become of City’s defence next time round. The Italian’s penchant for full-back rotation proved hugely frustrating in the title-winning campaign and while Fantasy managers could expect a fully-fit Richards to be rotated with Zabaleta under the previous regime, it’s uncertain just how the club’s incoming manager – likely to be Manuel Pellegrini – will utilise his backline options.

Certainly, City’s defence once again proved the most resilient in the Premier League last time out. A total of 34 goals conceded was the most impressive record in the top-flight, while Joe Hart registered 18 clean sheets over the course of the campaign – more than any other keeper and superior to his tally of 17 from 2011/12. While Zabaleta’s eye-catching displays should see his price escalate across the Fantasy games, Richards will either remain steady or even slightly drop – with regards to Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the likeliest scenario would see the Argentine move to 6.5 while Richards’ cost is held at last term’s initial 6.0.

Clearly, if Richards can mirror the attacking form that harvested a goal and six assists in 2011/12, he has the potential to flourish as a relatively cheap route into City’s defence, given that Kompany and Hart are both expected to be retained the premium bracket again. Versatile enough to fill in at centre-back, he could be shifted to the middle alongside Kompany if the new manager decides to rest youngster Matija Nastasic on occasion. With Kolo Toure already off to Liverpool and Aleksandr Kolarov being eyed up by Juventus, the defensive shake-up is already underway as City look to wrestle the title back from David Moyes’ United, though many will be sceptical as to whether they can replicate the resilience instilled by the somewhat cautious Mancini – if Richards can nail down a regular role and earn around 30+ starts, he could be back on our Fantasy radars once again.

So is Moyes super efficient and arranged these transfers within days of his arrival?

Or does he have to sit back and accept the deals that SAF made whether he likes it or not?

Moyes will assert his authority for sure. He's already overhauled the staff who have played a large part in United's success and consistency over the years.

That's fine for the backroom staff but it's the players who he needs to control.

I'm sure he's happy with the big name signings but I think he'd still be wanting to do his own things rather than being saddled with SAF's "legacy".

its a very English thing for a manager to identify, arrange and complete signings. More often than not (certainly abroad) this will be done by others. I'm sure Moyes will have autonomy when it comes to coaching the players

Again, that's what will have to happen.

Just think he might suffer if SAF's deals don't work out.

It's more important that Moyes gets the best out of the United players than any potential deals that Fergie had lined up before he left.

And he will place more emphasis on being able to make his own deals going forward. Moyes bought well at Everton don't forget.

Isnt SAF now Director of Football, which essentially means he deals with transfers. Paul Fairclough does it at Barnet and Edgar Davids gets pissed off with the sh1t he brings in.

Not sure if anyone will be able to answer this.

A couple of days after the season finished, FPL recalculated the tables due to amending some players scores.

Can anyone give me the full story on what changed?

Off the top of my head, Morrison and Fellaini scores were changed, is that right?>

Anyone remember what the changes were?

Richards ks an interesting one. The potential was evident 2 years ago, but can he really oust Zaba, who was far and away City's player of the season, and be first choice right-back? i have my doubts, whilst at cb his potential is reduced, and I'm not sure he'd be ahead of Lescott, even if Pellegrini decided he doesn't rate Nasty

Yeah I decided to give all the summer comps a miss, need to not think too much about football for a while after this year.

The weather in London is bloody fantastic!

I kind of agree, except when you consider how many great crosses were squandered by hopeless Everton strikers. RVP would put them all away and Baines could end up with an assist every other week

The reason here is that I won't be able to afford some of the other players, and even if I bought a next day keeper it would be Zablotony and I do think Butland will do better than him 😀

Hey guys care to rate my U21 team and suggest changes? (in brackets is the day they play)

    Gk: Ostbo (1) Zabolotny (2)
Def: Dasa Biraghi Dawson Standberg (all 1) Martins Indi (2)
Mid: Zaha Sallalich (1) Maher, Isco, Holtby (2)
Str: Destro (1) Rodrigo Volland (2)

0.0 in bank, is it worth swapping Dawson or Biraghi for a Spain defender?
Also is Volland a good option?

    Cheers

Question marks over Zaha and Destro starting, otherwise I think it looks fine. Yeah, maybe bring in a Spain defender for Biraghi- not sure whether he's starting either.

Are you around for the lineups in under 2 hours? It's pretty much confirmed that Nyland will start over Ostbo so that gives you an extra .5

Good defence. I would do that swap though, so you can upgrade Volland perhaps.

Cheers guys, what Spain defender would you have Chazza?

Thanks Demi, who would you upgrade Volland to with the 0,5? He's one of the favourites to finish top scorer I think though? Or is he not guaranteed to start?
