Pre-Season

Sleeper – Matt Jarvis

Having tasted relegation with Wolves at the end of the 2011/12 campaign, Matt Jarvis was afforded the chance of a quick top-flight return with just a few days left of last summer’s transfer window. Costing West Ham a club record fee in the region of £10m, the winger was soon followed by the loan acquisition of Andy Carroll as Sam Allardyce looked to freshen up his front three in light of the Hammers’ promotion:

Initially, there was a degree of relative optimism that Jarvis – at 6.0 – could potentially rival Kevin Nolan as a genuine mid-price Fantasy contender in the Hammers midfield. Given that his final season at Molineux had harvested eight goals, six assists and 14 bonus points, for a respectable 142 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, Jarvis’ delivery from the left flank looked tailor-made for Carroll’s aerial abilities, with plenty of assists anticipated.

By the time the season had come to an end, however, Jarvis had proved a bitter disappointment for Fantasy managers. Despite a security of starts which saw him make 29 first XI appearances (in addition to three games off the bench), he found the net just twice and also chipped in with just a couple of FPL assists, ending his first term at Upton Park on just 92 points in the FPL game – a full 57 points behind Nolan, and 50 points less than his tally for Wolves the previous year.

The Prospects

In all likelihood, Jarvis’ displays over the course of 2012/13 should see his price drop further across the Fantasy games. Given his minimal impact, there’d be little surprise if the former Wolves man slipped down to 5.5 in FPL but, while last term’s returns are undoubtedly far from persuasive, his home form towards the tail end of last term, which harvested a goal and four bonus points in his final couple of Upton Park appearances, suggests he may be worth monitoring.

Furthermore, the number of chances created last season indicates he was more than a little unlucky not to pick up a far greater number of assists. According to the Opta definition, Jarvis failed to supply a single assist for his Hammers team mates but, over the course of the campaign, made close to 50 “key passes” – a clear indication that he maintained a steady source of creativity from the flank. Indeed, Jarvis supplied 10 more goalscoring opportunities than Theo Walcott over 2012/13, for example, though thanks to his team mates’ superior finishing, the latter picked up 13 FPL assists, or 10 according to Opta.

While Carroll is currently back at parent club Liverpool, Allardyce has already admitted that securing the big forward’s future on a permanent basis is a “big priority”. The Geordie’s impact towards the end of the season also suggests he found his feet after a patchy settling-in period and, if he does indeed arrive, could bolster Jarvis’s potential next time out if he continues in the same vein. Allardyce has also been linked with Sevilla’s Alvaro Negredo as he looks to rectify a record that produced a mere 11 goals on the road all season – the worst away haul in the Premier League.

With Nolan set for an increase in cost after finishing the season with a flourish, it may well be that the Hammers skipper is priced out of our options in the mid-price bracket. Given that Mark Noble will remain the club’s spot-kick taker and offer us a budget midfield alternative, Jarvis is likely to stay firmly off Fantasy radars next time round. If he can maintain his creative endeavours, though, the winger will be optimistic of picking up more returns next time round and may be a real under the radar option as Allardyce looks to ensure his side avoid “second season syndrome” and improve upon last term’s tenth placed finish.

Going back to the Hazard vs Mata discussion, Hazard will be the one to get IMO. A lot won't agree but i think he is the better player and certainly more explosive in FPL.

I definitely agree, possibly even a bit cheaper next season too. Hazard should produce more goals and assist next season really.

The problem with Mata is that you'd never captain him unless he had a DGW whereas as you say Hazard is much more explosive and double figure scores are much more likely.

He was an assist monster, and he bangs in goals occasionally. Don't have the stats in front of me, but I captained him a few times to good effect.
That said, I didn't really do that well overall last season, so I should pipe down now.

at chelsea he pushed his wingers right up as attacking as wingers could get http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/01/25/teams-of-the-decade-13-chelsea-2004-06/

at inter he had eto'o and pendev so really two strikers on the wings too, and of course ronaldo is about as attacking as any winger can get at real madrid too. it's hard to know if that's a ronaldo being ronaldo thing or a mourinho idea though.
all in all i'd expect advanced wingers at best and the same as last year at worse.

Do also note that he loves a #10 - 'pard, Sneijder, Ozils's numbers are pretty decent too.

I reckon both Hazard and Mata will be just fine.

not sure about better player as we could argue for hours on that issue but i think as the quicker player with more direct dribbling skills hazard's attributes lend themselves to being the more dominating attacking player. mata as the better playmaker and passer imo lends itself more to holding back a bit more and orchestrating, rather than finishing. (not as in mata won't score a good amount of goals in general, he looks too good not to, simply relative to hazard in 50/50 situations for chelsea)

Mata scored an insane number of goals last season given the (lack of) shots he was taking. I think he'll do well to score as many goals next season despite his obvious quality, particularly if they have a proper striker playing up front.

Increasingly of late I've been realizing it suits them just fine to have us all frightened of other countries while they rule over us. There's an international political class that frankly have more in common with each other than their own countries.

It's been going on since World War One, when most of the monarchs of the countries at war were cousins.

Any likely changes to next seasons game?
Will any of Marks suggestions be taken on board ( New position for 'the hole' Goalkeepers pts improvements)

    They nearly always change something
Last year the bonus point system
Vice captain rule the year before
Winter wild card year before that

Personally, I hate the vice captain setup. Firm believer in ' If you're capt doesn't play, TOO BAD'

    Is any change actually needed?

I would love to think the BAPs would be changed so that they don't just reward goals twice. Ideally, they'd make defensive mids worth owning and inject some variety into the teams. But it won't happen.

Recovered balls are the way to go. You can end up wasting transfers on whichever budget mid is in vogue at any given time (Puncheon, Maloney etc). if you had recovered balls, someone like Tiote could be useful as a budget 5th mid

it's a huge leap of faith in a game played by over 2 million people. i think the people who like recovered balls like it due to experience of it in other games, therefore are quite a knowedgable bunch, and therefore know what other games are out there to get their fix of this more advanced scoring system.

You could argue that bonus points are even more complex. Very few of the casuals in my MLs even know they exist. They just log in every few weeks and see that their score has gone up a bit.

But I'd be open to factoring them into bonus points. I don't care really, just anything to widen the pool of ownable players.

I completely disagree, they reward the most mundane players and goes away from the purity of fpl - "goals mean points"

Every single piece of scoring is based on goals atm. If you start adding RB then next up you will be rewarding pass completion, shots, time spent in the final third and lets not forget the crowd favourite; decent hairstyle points.

Totally agree - my FPL mindset has changed since the new BAPS came in. No longer can I pick people like Silva since he doesn't score goals, I'm stuck with picking penalty takers since the impact of 3 bonus when they net is too huge to ignore..

BP system will certainly change with Opta. What these changes will be I have no idea. And will it be better I have no idea either.

Cant see them bringing in another position like AM or DM. If they do then this will spread the pool of players being picked, which in my opinion is the biggest area that needs to be addressed.

Last year I though price rises were very volitile. Every 20k transfers in (or thereabouts) a player's price rose, whereas the year before it was 20k, then 40k for next rise, then 80k for next rise etc. I think this system was better, as the new system led to mass transfers on friday saturday and sunday causing a player to be up 0.3 by monday morning. Then again I can't see them reverting back to something they have previously changed.

Personally I don't agree wth midfielders getting 1 for a clean sheets.

Gks maybe get 5 instead of 4 for a CS would make them more attractive than defenders.

Overall I can't see them changing much. With Opta taking over the stats it may be a lot to ask to revamp the whole stats area and some scoring areas

I would like to see only 6 bonus points being awarded for each match. I think it is ridiculous that the most boring matches are awarded the greatest number of bonus points. One 0-0 draw last season resulted in no less than 5 players being awarded 2 bonus points each.

I do like the Sleeper articles. Who do you think are the opposites form this season though? I.e. The ones that have over-performed this year and will constantly tempt us in the future only to disappoint, think Hangeland 2010/11 or Graham 2011/12. Could it be Michu or Fellaini? I think Lambert could be one.

Agree with Michu, think he totally over performed in terms of SoT to goals. There was a stage where he was having 1 SoT per game and scoring.

Benteke will find it hard to replicate his form from Jan - May I think, but still probaly 12-15 goals.

Right, so this U21 wildcard is turning out as a nice bit of practice for FPL / nightmare on wheels.

Kept my WC for this final group stage match, but ironically may not want to use it as I've got a collection of non-starters who might start for the dead rubbers today? Destro, Carvajal, and Sallalich.

But surely it's only worth keeping the WC for the knockouts if there's a big upset?

Looks like Morata and Rodrigo both don't have a yellow so neither might be rested due to suspension risk. Hmm..

It's tough. It can go either way I suppose. Get Morata and Rodrigo eventually scores!
The tomorrow is a lottery as Spain might rest someone like Moreno due to YC.

I'm hoping everyone sells Isco and he eventually explodes.

I'm keeping for the Semi's, better make sure I have the correct team for the last two game round than use it now, plus I expect most of my players to start the last round.

The final will be more less the same for all but the semifinals can make a difference in my mind. Not being able to see the lineups for tomorrow plus today's results possibly affecting them could cause you more grief that good if you mess the transfers.

So everyone is on a level playing field?

Nope, you have to earn your upvotes. No biggie though - it only really influences the weight of your vote. Having said that, its a great way for us to find folk who regularly contribute good stuff who obviously have a good reputation in the community who may well make mods or contributors in the future.

So in the same way is a L3 upvote worth more than a L2, presumably? From the sounds of things, it's probably not worth getting hung up on rep anyway - ultimately, you see the comments from the people whose opinions you value regardless of rep.

Yeah rep is pretty meaningless individually. As a group it controls which comments are easily accessible, and then it becomes fantastic.

Not really, given Mark is able to manually change people's rep himself so i'd be put back down if it ever got too out of hand. Rightly so too, given posting lineups all the time is hardly rep worthy compared to other stuff like posts analysing defences and shots conceded etc.

Nice going on the HC launch so far, just an interface idea - could the Comments box on the right (with the Recent and Hot Topics tabs) stay in the same place while you scroll? Would be much easier to get to without having to scroll up and hence encourage usage of it. THINK it's possible with CSS.

This was requested in beta testing. I assume it's on the "to do" list.

Proud to be the first one to have suggested that in beta 😎

This was my idea, I suggest all positive rep for this post be transferred to my account 😉

The best way for it to work would be for the comments to be scrollable, then everyting on the right toolbar would ALWAYS be visible.

Do you work in IT? Cause there are simpler ways to make it work. The concept that this page is equivalent to a blank piece of paper with everything stuck to it is rather inaccurate

No, I'm speaking as a user, scrollable comments woth the homepage stuck in place would be much more user friendly imo.

Boom, yes, only concern there would be avoiding having two sets of scrollbars, one for the main window and one for the comments, so the main window would need to be less than a screen height to avoid it having a scrollbar.

I like this idea. Ditto the Refresh button...or is that already floating? (I'm actually missing the refresh button on Firefox as well as IE).
