Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Philippe Coutinho

His arrival at Liverpool in last January’s transfer window was afforded little fanfare or heightened levels of expectation. Certainly, there was no denying Philippe Coutinho’s talents but the young Brazilian’s record prior to moving to Merseyside hinted at a player who was far from the finished product:

With Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and fellow new-boy Daniel Sturridge all vying for our consideration, Coutinho was afforded time to settle as a regular under Brendan Rodgers but by the time the season ended, had done enough to suggest he could well be a major contender in the 2013/14 campaign.

Introduced towards the end of the Gameweek 26 home defeat by West Brom, Coutinho soon cemented a first-team place and started all 12 of Liverpool’s subsequent league matches. Utilised on the left in Rodgers’ preferred 4-3-3, he also operated on the flank when the Reds shifted to a 4-2-3-1 to allow Suarez to tuck in behind Sturridge, but Coutinho also had a brief central berth in the first-half of the Gameweek 37 win at Fulham when Rodgers trialled a 3-5-1-1 formation, with the Brazilian handed the role in “the hole”.

Key Factors

  • Coutinho has quickly shown he is tailor-made for Rodgers’ style of play. His pace, vision and trickery, allied with an improving eye for goal and impressive work ethic, is likely to see him start the vast majority of games next time out. Already, his starting role looks assured regardless of further summer acquisitions – incoming new boy Iago Aspas looks set to force Stewart Downing down the pecking order on the right, though the Spaniard may also vie with Sturridge for the central role if Suarez decides to leave.

  • Crucially, while the likes of Suarez, Sturridge and Aspas will be classified as forwards, Coutinho should maintain his midfielder classification in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – a fact that is likely to prove significant and boost his out of position prospects, with Rodgers expected to roll out a 4-3-3 more often than not.

  • Having started at 6.5 in FPL last time out, there’s no doubt a hike in price is on the cards but – given he has just 12 Premier League starts to his name and isn’t on spot-kicks, set-pieces or corners –Coutinho is likely to remain outside of the premium bracket. Gerrard’s return to form last term is set to threaten the double figure bracket, while a ceiling of 8.5 seems realistic for the youngster. With Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard all expected to come in at 10.0 or over, Coutinho may well prove outstanding value and help free up budget for our three man front lines.

  • From just 12 starts, Coutinho produced three goals, seven assists and six bonus points – an average of 5.75 FPL points per start. Most impressively from a Fantasy perspective, he showed a real consistency, producing attacking returns in seven of his first XI appearances and the Brazilian also demonstrated his explosive capabilities with three sets of double figures to his name.

  • His performances in Suarez’s enforced absence through suspension bode particularly well for any would-be suitors. The Uruguayan is, of course, suspended for the opening six matches of 2013/14 and has made no secret of his intentions of sealing a move away from Merseyside this summer – Coutinho flourished in the four games without Suarez, producing a goal, four assists and four bonus points; an average of eight points per game.

Anyone up for some Confed Cup Fantasy Football?

I've put together a Google Spreadsheet, complete with full teams, positions, goals, caps, and most importantly Prices (based them off the pricing in the U21 game).

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtXRkTNaMPBWdHdDWWFTb0Q1U1lUZGs2M21uU09TcXc&usp=sharing

Maybe you can list a team of XI here in the comments and I can go in and make a separate sheet to list everyone's team? I'm open to suggestions as to how to run it...

"With Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard all expected to come in at 10.0 or over..."

    Whoa, there.

Bale, I can see, but for the others, while definitely performers, that would seem out-of-perspective expensive to me.

Actually think you could be onto something there. FPL compressed the midfielder pricings last year with very few reaching double figures. If they repeat that this year I can see some of them, probably Hazard and Cazorla, at the 9.5 mark.

could be for Santi and Mata. both tailed off at the back end...not that they became bad players but they wouldn't justify 10.0mill + based on their latter performances...not for me anyway.

?....Both Santi and Mata had relative barren spells during the second half of the season...quite prolonged as well...as did Michu. Of those five listed above it was Walcott/Bale and Hazard who finished the season strongest....Bale of course will be well in excess of 10.0 mill...Based on the second half of the season i would put Santi and Mata closer to 9.0 than 10.0.

    Spain Under-21 news;

Ignacio Camacho was forced off against the Netherlands with a sprained ankle but is expected to be available to face Norway.

Álvaro Morata ended the group stage as the leading scorer in the tournament with three goals. The Real Madrid CF striker was also top scorer when Spain won the 2011 UEFA European U19 Championship.

Netherlands midfielder Adam Maher attempted to swap shirts with Thiago Alcántara after Wednesday's game, but needed the help of the Spain press officer to walk away with the captain's jersey.

I would find it difficult to see Rodrigo start ahead of Morata given their contrasting form so far. Just depends on who the coach prefers.

    Norway Under-21 news;

The day after securing their place in the semi-finals, the Norway squad relaxed with an afternoon visit to the West Bank and Jerusalem. In the evening national coach Skullerud, along with three other members of the NFF delegation, went to Petah Tikva to watch Spain beat the Netherlands and set up Saturday's semi-final meeting with the Scandinavians.

The squad had a stroll along the beach near their Tel Aviv hotel on Thursday morning before training at Ramat Gan in the evening.

Skullerud has no serious injury concerns in the wake of Tuesday's draw with Italy – when he made nine changes to his starting XI – and should have a full squad to choose from.

Surprised to see this still in my Google Docs but here's a few graphs I knocked up last preseason showing the distribution of player prices, and how they changed between 11-12 and 12-13. Will add the new season to the graph.

There's tabs for all players, goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards there.

Players got cheaper in every position (most spectacularly forwards) and the spread of prices was reduced. The 10+ bracket was eliminated for midfielders with only Silva on 10.0.

Quite like how you can see the brackets come out as humps in the distribution. Budget defenders around 4.5, premium defenders around 6.5, budget mids at 4.5, midpriced at 6.0, heavy hitters at 9.0-9.5. Big question I guess is whether this is gonna continue or just the result of the previous season's preformances.

I think your point is valid, if its that at a certain point the rest backtrack in order to preserve the big hitting status of the few rather than them becoming completely unaffordable.

Yeah it's relative surely. ie. if there was a season when loads of points were scored, the total cost of all players would increase, price inflation if you will. It might then become difficult to put together anything resembling a decent team, although maybe that's the point, to force us into looking for new players.

    PRICE PREDICTIONS (albeit pointless)

If the past is anything to go by:

RVP 2011/12 scored 269 points and was given a starting price of 13.0.
This season he scored 262 points so can't see his starting price being changed.

Considering Silva scored 184 points in 2011/12 and was priced at 10.0 I'd imagine Gerrard, Hazard, Walcott, Cazorla, Mata who scored 185-212 to all be priced similarly between 10.0-10.5

Lampard was priced at 13.0 following his season where he scored 285 points, Bale scored 249 points this season so I'd expect a price of around 12.0.

Other potential targets such as Coutinho, Benteke, Lambert, Michu, Fellaini all look like they'll be priced between 8.0-9.0

I'd assume a huge amount of it is based on the previous seasons but its the pricing of transferred players and the newly promoted teams which is hard to predict

What is everyone predictions for the top4
    1) Chelsea- With Mourinho and the squad they have they are capable of reclaiming the tittle away from United.
    2) City- Good New Signings and a good manager in Pellegrini, who could push city all the way with his style of football.
    3) United- Moyes will need time to settle but we will have to wait and see what he beings to United. Are they capable of Winning the league? I don't know.
    4) Will be between, Arsenal/Liverpool/ Tottenham, it will be tight but I Just think Arsenal will sneak it as they have the money and they can pull of big deals as they are in the champions league. They could be the dark horses if they are challenging for the title! That's what my predictions are! Give it a positive and a hot topic! Thanks Giys! 😀

In theory all 3 managers will need adjustment time. Mourinho and Pellegrini will have to deal with a director of football too and I have a feeling Mourinho will be clashing heads with the higher ups. If Arsenal and Spurs get their act together even more they could be real contenders with a few good signings. Not sure of Pool, Suarez on the way out.

Oh as for United, I have my doubts. I'm happy with the defensive signings but they probably need a strong winger and a couple midfield signings. That said Moyes may play different formation and everything so it really comes down to him. It's why I think City signing players without Pellegrini was stupid.

I've only noticed people fancying Arsenal/Spurs as dark horses once Fergie left - think we could still be some way behind Chelsea and City and scrambling in the CL spots as usual, with United fighting us for them if your season really does go wrong.

My think is neither Pell or Mourinho will like working under people, it has caused problems before. I think with all the mixing up of squads and managers and everything, Arsenal and Spurs could capitalise but they need a few signings.

I think you have to have Bale and RVP as captain options then as many good value up and coming "big hitters of the future" (Coutinho, Kagawa etc.) and dirt cheap defence.

Think the best time to do that was January last season, and having been there, it was good but not sustainable. It's much easier to have 3 forwards in form than 5 mids in form. It's also very difficult to keep multiple blanking heavy hitter mids.

Corrigan, not seen you around these parts in a while.

I had the 3-5-2 in the middle of December before it was in vogue, then again for a bit in Feb. The main thing was, Bale, aside, the mids didn't really hold that form, and it was a lot of cash tied up in 2 points. 3-4-3 offers more scope for me in the sense that it's much easier to switch between form strikers if you have 3 slots as opposed to 2. if you say RvP has one of those slots locked down, in a 3-5-2 you're leaving yourself 1 spot only. Not very keen on this.

Questions for anyone in the know about TWS (or anyone else)...

    1) If I am the highest bidder on all three keepers, do I win them all?

    2) If I am the highest bidder on a player with, for example, 10 tokens and the next highest is 4 tokens, do I have to spend all 10 on the player or is it like eBay where I get the highest increment i.e. 5 tokens?

    3) If I resubmit the form, does the most recent form overwrite the older one?

Gink isn't here so I'll fill in for him:

      1) Nope:

"If the club exceeds its player position limit, the bidding order (1st, 2nd and 3rd) in the weekly submission shall determine the preference of each team"

So you'll lose the player that was lower in your bidding order than in another team's bidding order, I think.

      2) You spend all 10 tokens, that's your risk of placing a high bid to guarantee getting the player

      3) Yes

      My take:

      1. No, you can only own 2 keepers, so would win the first 2 on your bidding list.

      2. You pay the full 10 tokens.

      3. Your last set of bids (before deadline) will count.

Yeah this, really eyeing Silva. Could have an Isco-like season. Think they pinpointed City's poorer finishing this year as one reason for his decline as he relies on assists. Also frankly they did look worse, I'm expecting a return from them this year.

I would wait to see how Mourinho decides to use Hazard and Mata before judging. Too much uncertainty. You could say Mata is in the Ozil role and I'm pretty sure Ozil would get more fantasy points than Di Maria. Course Hazard might be better...

Yeah annoyingly Oscar plays perfectly well at CM too, think he was deployed there briefly last year during the Crisis of the Central Midfielders.

Mourinho did tinker a lot between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 last season at Madrid, primarily to balance possession and penetration I think. So brought Modric in as a third passing midfielder and shunted Ozil right when the opposition was tougher. Wonder if the same might happen with Oscar/Mata

Yep, that's pretty much what I was thinking, though maybe with Mata swapped to the right cutting inside as he's more left footed.

Lampard's relationship with Mou means his gametime surely will be significant, but actually I think they'd be better with someone else in that system if the plan is to dominate midfield, maybe Ramires for his energy (even though I don't rate him that highly technically either).

Shameless sticky post attempt number 38334:

Is Chelsea's DGW more or less confirmed?

The 2013 UEFA Super Cup will be on Friday 30th August 2013.

GW3 is the very next day.

So Chelsea will have a blank GW3?

They can't play their GW3 game in the middle of that week as there are WC qualifiers on the 6th & 10th Sept.

So it seems extremely likely that they will have a DGW in week 1,

Depending on the fixtures released this Wednesday, 3 Chelsea players may well be essential.

Then perhaps sell 1 or 2 afterwards & bench the remaining Chelsea players.

It will be very interesting to see who their DGW week opponents will be.

I agree, I guess it's to do with the whole CL, EL thing, they do the draws the Thursday or the Friday, so they have the Super Cup then as well

In all honesty, I'd just do away with it. Things like the Community Shield (or it's European equivalents) are basically just glorified friendlies, this thing isn't given it's 3 weeks into the season

    Just renewed my membership.

£12.50 is a serious bargain for the effort that Mark & Co. put into this site.

I don't post much, but I'm looking forward to that little Scout logo beside my user name.

        Badges are overrated.

FPL Value team of the season.

    Jaaskelainen
    O'Brien, Mertesacker, Rangel.

because he rarely started, never scored when anyone played him and crucially wasn't Guy Demel

All I could find. Anyone got any others? Anyone got a preference to the above? Or a Scout League? (not sure if you can make leagues ... I haven't signed up to either yet)

And the best strategy is to just fill your team with whoever is playing Tahiti, right?
