Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Gaston Ramirez

Arriving at Southampton on the final day of last summer’s transfer window, Gaston Ramirez’s acquisition was regarded as a real coup for the Premier League new boys. The Uruguayan signed on for a club record fee believed to be in the region of £12m and, having been favourably priced across the Fantasy games, looked a genuine mid-price option for our five man midfields:

By the end of the season, however, Ramirez was sitting in the St Mary’s stands after being banned for the final three matches, with his debut campaign in the English top-flight turning out patchy at best. A total of five goals and four assists over 26 appearances, supplemented by eight Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points saw Ramirez end the season on 88 points – given that Rickie Lambert racked up 187 points as the lone forward, it’s fair to say that the former Bologna man had plenty room for improvement next time out.

Key Factors

  • On the positive side, Ramirez’s limited returns from his role in “the hole” is likely to be good news for his price across the Fantasy games next time round. While Lambert’s exploits will ensure a hefty hike and perhaps force him out of many Fantasy plans, Ramirez should remain around the 6.0 mark in FPL – given that mid-price midfield options such as Michu, Marouane Fellaini and Kevin Nolan are all set to rise in cost, Ramirez may well step up as a strong value option.

  • Ramirez’s first season in the Premier League was also blighted by a leg problem. With his game time limited, the new boy made just 20 starts and six sub appearances for the Saints and featured for a total of 1,679 minutes compared to Lambert’s 3,126 minutes – while he delivered only 47% of Lambert’s FPL points haul, then, he only played 53% of the forward’s game time. If he remains injury-free next time round and providing Pochettino curbs his penchant for subbing Ramirez off midway through the second period of matches, the Uruguayan will be optimistic of mirroring his final season in Serie A, which harvested eight goals and four assists.

  • Although Southampton stuttered towards the end of the previous campaign, Ramirez hinted at an upturn in performance at St Mary’s. The Uruguayan notched in two of his final four home appearances before receiving his marching orders for an elbowing incident involving Shane Long in Gameweek 35 – Mauricio Pochettino has already talked up his star man’s potential for next time out, following a difficult settling-in period. Certainly, the 2013/14 fixture list affords Ramirez the perfect platform to kick on – Southampton’s first six home fixtures look particularly strong (SUN, WHM, CPL, SWA, FUL, HUL) and with trips to West Brom, Norwich and Stoke also included in the opening 11 Gameweeks, the Saints could barely have wished for a kinder opening run.

  • As Pochettino prepares for his first full season in charge, he’ll be buoyed by some of his side’s home results against the top eight last time round. Since taking the reins last January, the Argentine saw his side beat City, Chelsea and Liverpool at St Mary’s, in addition to drawing with Everton in his first match in charge. While there’s no denying Saints finished the season poorly, Pochettino’s side have already shown their capabilities and will be looking to eradicate the inconsistencies that harvested just four points from their final six games – Ramirez will undoubtedly be key to their progression.

Not sold at all on Ramirez, looks to me like Saints may have got their fingers burnt with what they paid for him. Doesn't look like a player suited to the pace of the PL. Wil need to make an instant impact, or he could find himself glued to the bench on a regular basis!

Should be an excellent option given how Lambert's price will be inflated this season, will easily maintain that £6.0m starting price, if not lower. But then again, Jay Rodriguez could be a better option in the frontline if he produces as his did towards the back end of last season. He could be a steal...

£300 is my biggest pay packet.

The league I run now is slightly different to try and encourage participation. £20 entry, then we have 10 manager of months with a chance to get your money back. It keeps it competitive. Anything left goes straight to the winner. For example, 20 team league, 400 quid pot, £200 divided up into manager of the months, £200 to the overall winner.

People who are out of the top spot running can be calculated and make 10 transfer last week of the previous month to try and win the following month for example

Very similar to the cash league I'm involved in, although the stakes are slightly lower and the top 3 get an end of season payout.

We have a league where we try to keep everyone interested until the end of the season. Basically let everyone try to surpass the one above them so even if you have a crappy season, you are still interested in FPL. So if the money pooled in was say 100%, our structure was somewhat like

      1) Won 45%
      2) Won 25%
      3) Won 15%
      4) Won 10%
      5) Won 5%
      6) No profit/loss
      7-8) Pay 5%
      9-10) Pay 7.5%
      10-12) Pay 10%
      12-15) Pay 15%

Just over $110 this season. Also part of a ML that a bunch of bookies run where you win $10 per gameweek if you beat their "in house" team. Only requirement is that you place at least a $10 bet that week to come in to contention.

This year is first year I'm doing "manager of the month" prizes on top of the standard 1st/2nd/3rd. Might throw in a best single gw score over the season at the end.

I have won over £800 playing FPL in the last 3 years 🙂

I think Toseys made over a grand one year.

Teddy is friends with a guy who won £250,000 in the News of the World game a while before online fantasy gaming was the norm. That was when a transfer had to be done via the old 0898 premium phone numbers. A long time before I started playing that's for sure.

Depends on the size of the league. 1st 2nd and 3rd for around twenty. Keeps interest alive.

Large leagues, maybe to 5th or even tenth (small amounts) Maybe a monthly prize too to keep those at the bottom still in with a shout of winning something.

Nothing worse than MLs where half the teams are dead.

Went very well for me this season, but guess it's going to be a bit harder getting people in next season.
      We've got a 100£ each league with a 60,30,10 split.
Made 480£ from that one, and also made 400 from another bigger local league.

And i won 500£ from a local football cafe, they run a league, they also give away a free Burger&coke meny for the best score each GW.

And i'm still trying to collect the seven bottles of vodka i won in Euros 12 competition.

Between mates and work colleagues or better yet both for a bumper prize pot. Problem is there is nowhere that can act as a secure bank and pay out for online leagues. Gap in the market if someone is interested in setting it up. This site could do it really. Would really help the cashflow out for upgrades/new features/summer holidays etc 😉

TM - idea for a game format for this year

Basically it would be a H2H comp modeled on the World Cup; so you will need 32 (or 64 if enough nations). So that will require 6 rounds to complete (if you do it as simple knock-out). To choose each nation's representative, you can have a H2H comp for all the entrants from each country (i.e. all the Irish go into one H2H league, UK into another, US another, etc, etc)Then at the chosen GW the leader of each nation moves into the WC proper.

Just a thought and way to contrived for me to even think about, but you were looking for ideas the other day and I thought something like this could be good.

Interesting idea. Way too much work for me though. The FPL Open & Elite 64 is a lot of work already when it comes to H2H. Looking at ladder competitions so everyone can enter & removing teams would be the way of elimination. LMS is easy enough to score & remove teams. Perhaps a knockout comp where "Average" is a decider as another idea.

5 goals 4 assists in 1743 minutes is reasonable, thats almost exactly 50% of a seasons potential gametime so if he gets more minutes this time round I think he could be well worth 6m or so. Although Lallana could be a decent alternative if he gets minutes as his goalscoring record in the past is a lot better than he showed last season.

Hello everyone, was a member last season but didn't comment all that often (although i loved the banter going on), won a mini-league i had on the first 2 seasons by a good margin (and a pretty good overall rating, 140k on the first year because i joined on the 3rd game week and we played the league on a points per game week system, 1191 on the 2nd season, and the 3rd season, the one that just finished, i unfortunately finished 2nd in my mini-league and was 23k, so im looking to bounce back!!!!)

Just thought I'd introduce myself a little because I'm going to be commenting much more often next season and i want a high rating like in my 2nd season, looking forward to it 🙂

So does anyone else feel that City's search for a striker isnt necessary? A potential Aguero (ST), Isco (Left wing), Silva (Attacking mid), Navas (Right wing), Fernandinho and Toure (Defensive mids) sounds deadly to me. I would've made the left wing a bigger priority especially considering Cavani's price and that Lewandowski doesn't seems to be moving

I thought the Isco deal is off. But your right the leftwing/second tricky midfielder is more important than finding a striker imo.

I'm a big fan of Isco and while i know Madrid are pushing hard for him, Pellegrini might still have say in all this, and i would be extremely angry with Isco if he were to move to Madrid, not because im anti-madrid, but because no matter what they tell him, he's not going to be a starter, the left wing is Cristiano's (unless he leaves which i doubt), and there's Ozil, Modric and Kaka competing for the attacking mid spot in that order, so that means that either all three of those will be benched or he's played on the right wing which means Di Maria is benched (and they're pushing for Bale who would take up the right wing spot) and playing on the right wing would waste his talent anyways. A starting spot is much easier to guarantee on the left wing with City and with a pure winger on the right, the left would need more of the play maker / cutting in style. He needs City as much as they need him

It's not enough firepower just to have Aguero and Dzeko as your strikers, especially since there are questions marks over both of them after last season.

I haven't seem too much of him but he looks really good, sort of like Podolski except with more flair and a little more central (position) although i've seen him cut in to score from the left a few times

Well Aguero was injured early on in the season and still ended with 17 goals so i would personally have doubts surrounding him, and i'm not saying they shouldn't sign a striker (although Guidetti would be great cover), i just think they shouldnt spend big on a striker who would expect to be a starter, and whoever that is can come in for less than how much Dzeko will be sold for. Plus it would be kind of wasting Aguero's talents by shifting him to the left wing.

City lacked goals last season so they definitely need someone to fill the gap with Tevez gone. Aguero's season was disrupted with injury no doubt, but he played a lot more than people seem to realise, only missed 8/38 league games. Needs to perform much better if they are going to win the league.

I completely agree that City need goals, but Pellegrini generally doesn't play 2 strikers so they dont need as many strikers as they did last season, they need more players capable of playing on the wing because Nasri and Sinclair dont cut it. They need goals but i dont think its a striker that will get them that, they need the creative attacking midfielder/ left winger to help with that. And Aguero scored 17 goals from 40 apps and a few of those were as a substitute and Mancini was really annoying with his substitutions at times so he didn't play as many full games as he would've liked, and lets not forget that City looked pretty bad last season in attack so to get those numbers is pretty impressive to me, especially when i think they had a bigger problem with creating chances than taking them

Hah we've hijacked this guys introduction post somehow.

All fair points, they've added a bit more creativity with Navas and Fernandinho should encourage a bit more of an attacking style with him at DM. Although another striker is still a priority though I think!

Well i started the post so im okay with it 🙂 I wouldn't be surprised if they signed a striker and played Aguero on the left, and i'm sure it would be good, i just think that Isco on the left and Aguero as a striker would be the deadliest system they can use. But fair enough, i can see why you think a striker could be the priority

I said exactly the same thing. I'm a massive Liverpool fan and think that this is only a good signing if Reina is on his way. We need to be as clever with our money as possible and buying a player for around 10 million for a position where we already have another quality player seems senseless.

RMTs are essential at the start of the season - but from, say, GW30 onwards they're just a narcissistic 'look how good my team is' annoyance.

          I wouldn't no, because I don't like RMTs.

Others would though, surely. If they want to post a RMT, then once they've done that, they can then rate a few on there in return. 'You scratch my back, I scratch yours.' Or people can go on there for ideas, if they so desire.

The new up/downvote would work well on there, imo. Like a team, upvote it. Don't, downvote it.

Everyone has their opinions and, with RMTs, mine is I simply don't like them (never do them myself). Particularly Late July/August where they just fill up the site. At times they become nothing more than spam, imo. Pretty hard to have discussions about players when threads are filled with RMTs over and over and over. So if there was a separate place for them, I'd like that. Others wouldn't and that's fair enough.

HC may solve the problem of them flooding the site, to some extent, but we'll see.

Fair enough Bubbles, I very rarely post an RMT myself (think I've done about 3 ever) but it's kind of the bread and butter of the site. I also actually find them useful as although I don't post my own, you can often find useful pieces of advice in the feedback given to others.

Hopefully the alternative ways to sort the comments will give you some options you haven't had before, as long as there are others with your way of thinking the non-RMT conversations should still flourish.

RMTs are an integral part of this site - I've nothing more than anecdotal evidence to back this up but I think a lot of people start off with RMTs before they become more involved in the regular discussions, etc. They're a gateway drug to the full class-A FFS experience.

RMTs will be allowed as per normal, spamming of RMTs where advice has already been received will not. Hostility and abuse to those asking for help via an RMT is also not something anyone wants to see.

The ability to sort threads by rating/sticky and also the hot topics widget means that if people just want to go straight for the 'good' stuff and avoid the RMTs they can, those who want to help also can.

That's the theory - getting people to make it work in practice might be a little trickier 😉

Another question i want to ask. How much do you back your instinct while playing FPL? I was thinking about this the other night when Jonty posted the Dullard vs Gambler thread. I am a gambler/risk taker by nature and the season worked out in my favor when it comes to the gambles i took based on pure instinct. But then at other times, a few transfers were as ridiculous.

Like for example, i got Baines in just before the game he got 2 goals based on pure instinct. Most FFSers adviced me against it but i went ahead and did it anyway.

So my question is how often do you back your instinct and what is the line between going by instinct and getting an unearthed gem and getting a player, just for the feck of it, to be different.

Is this when you rely on underlying stats (explosion imminent) and watch more highlights with regards to the players?

Even before i got Sess or Giroud in, i simply saw the games and a bit of the highlights and was like these feckers are getting way too many chances to spur them so consistently.

I speak about this because a lot of us underestimate/ignore our instinct and go for the sheep move. I need to find a way to explain this. There is a difference between identifying a hidden gem and being different for the feck of being different. Does someone get this?

I completely understand what you're talking about, on my first 2 seasons i relied on my instinct and thats when i did best. Last season, i looked at what others are saying more often and when i was behind, i then just became stubborn and wouldn't bring certain players in because i just wanted my team to be different. I'm sure it wont work for everyone but i spend alottttt of time on football so relying on my instinct is the best and only way for me to go if i wanna do well.

I now understand you understand. So to get the balance act right,

          1) Play Safe (enough to not go over the top)
          2) Back your instinct
          3) Don't be stubborn. Admit your bloody mistake, and correct it asap.

Absolutely, i know that now i won't be stubborn if i didn't call when a player was going to do well, it happened to me last year with Mata, i felt that i wanted him but his games were really difficult at the beginning (he missed the first few weeks so what i mean by his games at the beginning is more GW 6 onwards) so i didn't get him and then he started performing against the big teams and people were then bringing him in, and i just became so stubborn saying no he cant continue this, no he's gonna be rested, etc.... So ya rely on your instinct, and know when you were freaking wrong.

Oh and this is especially true when it comes to rotating defenders, it didnt work for me one bit last year, the person i benched would have the tougher game but i would generally end up benching the guy who got the points, and that made be so damn angry. On my second season, i had a bit of rotation going (i finished 1100 that year and im damn proud of it but just as angry that i couldn't follow it up last year) but i picked players based on who i liked (and this depended on many things of course but it was my instinct) so this year im ditching the whole choosing 3 defenders that rotate, i'm going to choose the players i find to be value and then fill the rest of my team out accordingly.

Done 🙂 I'm gonna be around the comments section more often next year (i was a member last year but didn't get very involved) but while i will value everyone's opinions, i will never rely on picking a player solely from others, i need to be truly convinced myself (although my instincts once pointed towards Formica and i brought him in, yes not my finest moment but at least i transferred him out 3-4 weeks later lol)

Well im not against the rotation system, i'm against choosing players solely based on which rotate well, i would rather see find a defender from Stoke (for example) that i liked then think about rotations after that, i just don't want to be making decisions based on a rotation system when even if they are playing against easy teams, they still wouldnt keep clean sheets.

Yes I do it every so often, getting in early on the Walcott wagon was a biggie thanks mainly to careful analysis of his underlying stats. There are a couple of other examples as well, but my main problem is that I often don't get the chance to watch many games due to the games starting in the middle of the night where I am.

One thing I've noticed in previous years is I have a habit of getting price locked into certain players. Someone could fall out of form and I'll want to get rid but because I haven't got the funds to bring him back in because of price rises I end up carrying them waaay longer than I should. That's one thing I'm going to try and eradicate next year...Hopefully 🙂

    Hey Guys 🙂

    DDG
    Rafael Vidic Ferdinand Evra
    Carrick Thiago
    Ronaldo Rooney Kagawa
    RVP

That's a title winning side right there. If Ronaldo joins, Rooney will want to stay.

I would put Phil Jones there instead of Rio. He's going to step up to the plate this season.
