Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Gaston Ramirez

Arriving at Southampton on the final day of last summer’s transfer window, Gaston Ramirez’s acquisition was regarded as a real coup for the Premier League new boys. The Uruguayan signed on for a club record fee believed to be in the region of £12m and, having been favourably priced across the Fantasy games, looked a genuine mid-price option for our five man midfields:

By the end of the season, however, Ramirez was sitting in the St Mary’s stands after being banned for the final three matches, with his debut campaign in the English top-flight turning out patchy at best. A total of five goals and four assists over 26 appearances, supplemented by eight Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points saw Ramirez end the season on 88 points – given that Rickie Lambert racked up 187 points as the lone forward, it’s fair to say that the former Bologna man had plenty room for improvement next time out.

Key Factors

  • On the positive side, Ramirez’s limited returns from his role in “the hole” is likely to be good news for his price across the Fantasy games next time round. While Lambert’s exploits will ensure a hefty hike and perhaps force him out of many Fantasy plans, Ramirez should remain around the 6.0 mark in FPL – given that mid-price midfield options such as Michu, Marouane Fellaini and Kevin Nolan are all set to rise in cost, Ramirez may well step up as a strong value option.

  • Ramirez’s first season in the Premier League was also blighted by a leg problem. With his game time limited, the new boy made just 20 starts and six sub appearances for the Saints and featured for a total of 1,679 minutes compared to Lambert’s 3,126 minutes – while he delivered only 47% of Lambert’s FPL points haul, then, he only played 53% of the forward’s game time. If he remains injury-free next time round and providing Pochettino curbs his penchant for subbing Ramirez off midway through the second period of matches, the Uruguayan will be optimistic of mirroring his final season in Serie A, which harvested eight goals and four assists.

  • Although Southampton stuttered towards the end of the previous campaign, Ramirez hinted at an upturn in performance at St Mary’s. The Uruguayan notched in two of his final four home appearances before receiving his marching orders for an elbowing incident involving Shane Long in Gameweek 35 – Mauricio Pochettino has already talked up his star man’s potential for next time out, following a difficult settling-in period. Certainly, the 2013/14 fixture list affords Ramirez the perfect platform to kick on – Southampton’s first six home fixtures look particularly strong (SUN, WHM, CPL, SWA, FUL, HUL) and with trips to West Brom, Norwich and Stoke also included in the opening 11 Gameweeks, the Saints could barely have wished for a kinder opening run.

  • As Pochettino prepares for his first full season in charge, he’ll be buoyed by some of his side’s home results against the top eight last time round. Since taking the reins last January, the Argentine saw his side beat City, Chelsea and Liverpool at St Mary’s, in addition to drawing with Everton in his first match in charge. While there’s no denying Saints finished the season poorly, Pochettino’s side have already shown their capabilities and will be looking to eradicate the inconsistencies that harvested just four points from their final six games – Ramirez will undoubtedly be key to their progression.

Suggests it might be down to the Swansea wage structure? That could impact their ability to sign other players, I would imagine.

True. He was a bit of a bell end. Surprised to learn he still couldn't speak English after nearly 7 years in the country, but I work with a couple of Argentinians and they said he has had like zero education, and football is all his has done.

He was a highly paid and successful in his work without learning English, so where was the motivation for him to learn? People in Britain (rather ironically with our reluctance to learn foreign languages) would beat him with that stick but really he's done ok without it.

    Hi,

A lot of people talk about delving into statistics and I was wondering if anyone had used inferential statistics to aid in selecting players.

For example, using multiple regression to assess which predictors (i.e. penalty box touches, chances) best predict certain FPL points (i.e. goals). This could help in selecting players by definitively knowing which stats best predict future performance.

Another example would be to use inferential statistics to see if fewer/more cleansheets/goals are scored away or at home.

Could people suggest what would be the best predictor of goals or clean sheets? Has anyone attempted this before?

    Thanks

Don't know, but I would imagine that as football is such a low scoring sport that it would be hard to get any good predictions. As opposed to something like basketball, where the shot/score ratio is so different.

People have had a go but don't let that stop you.

For me, it's all too much - stats only tell half the story and looking into it in that much depth isn't something which interests me as ultimately, FPL returns are based on the future rather than the past.

    GK/GK - mid/cheap rotating

      Van Persie?

Personally Im not even gonna bother with trying to pick a team until the prices are out. Generally thats the template people go by but future transfers and stuff could shake that up hopefully 🙂

Last year defender's prices went up with the likes of Kompany coming in at £7mil. So might see a drop in defenders to accommodate for the lack off CSs last season and to give people an incentive to go with 4-4-2 or 5-3-2, and so on.

Just hope there are more differentials and stuff like two seasons ago to avoid the template teams

Not a fan of >6.0 keepers and DDG will obviously be more expensive this year so rules him out for me but if Arsenal have a nailed on GK (Szczesny if we don't sign anyone) for 5.5, then I'm fairly certain I'll start with him and a 4.0.

If Dave is 6.5m, to Cech/Hart at 7.0m, I will be tempted. Where else do you go for Utd defence, as right back there are four options, left back three, centre three?? City is Hart/Kompany, Chelsea also a lottery, so Dave could be the most secure and cheapest top three defender??

Something for members. Just done this table of last season's most attacking players. Have sorted by shots on target and also included goals and assists. Obvious familiar names there, but good recap of who was good at both scoring and assisting and also getting into shooting positions. The mids with double figure goals and assists look particularly appealing.

      That's a lot of crosses! 😯
Too lazy to check it out myself, but how does that compare to other players-with-many-crosses (regardless of position) this season?

Actually that makes even more interesting reading. Lots of players there that are likely to go under the radar for most next season.

8th one on that list is remarkable - to have no assists from that many crosses, especially considering who he had to aim at!

Certainly makes me think twice about him as an option. Worst crosser in the Prem League.

The guy who stands out could be Snodders. 2nd on the list for crosses, but no one decent to get on the end of them, RvW could change that

Valencia's stats also stand out, in a bad way

Just added successful and unsuccessful crosses to that table.

Interestingly one in four of his crosses was successful in terms of meeting someone, which is not a bad ratio. That would indicate that the player he crossed to was more at fault than him. The FPL's top assister had a worse successful cross rate. Right, he's back on my wishlist.

Repost from last night in the DZ..

Proven GKs likely to be priced at 4.5 - 5.0 next season:

    4.5
    Ruddy (Norwich)
    Boruc (Southampton)
    Westwood (Sunderland)
    Guzan (Aston Villa)

    5.0
    Krul (Newcastle)
    Foster (West Brom)
    Stekelenburg (Fulham)

Didn't include promoted clubs as I have no clue.

Ruddy and Boruc or Krul and Westwood are two combinations I'm keeping my eye on. Really want to stick to 9.5 budget for goalkeepers.

Jussi and Begovic will be 5m each at least, probably 5.5m for at least one of them..that combo is dead now.

You basically get one year out of a keeper and then have to move on to the next one when the price inflates, since I've been playing
          Hart, Foster
          Vorm, Krul
          Jussi, Bego

The second pair might be possible to come to this year.

Not that crazy, unwise to relate last seasons form to the coming season. Villa have a group of young players with a season in the PL behind them, will certainly improve from that, I expect them to have a comfortable season. Guzan is also an imroving keeper.

Nice but I think they'll both be £5m, Stekelenberg being first choice Dutch keeper and Norwich having been so tight at home last season. Hope I'm wrong because I might just do that if it's £9.5m

Strange.. Can't see them having Carroll and Lukaku.

Would definitely have Lukaku in my team at the start of the season if he was
