Scout Report – Erik Pieters

Mark Hughes made his first move into the transfer market as Stoke City manager last week with the acquisition of Erik Pieters from PSV Eindhoven for a fee of 3.6m Euros. The 24-year-old joins up at the Britannia on a four-year deal and, although predominantly utilised as a left-back, also affords the Potters a versatility at centre-half, according to his new manager.

“I am delighted to have secured Erik’s signature. The main focus this summer in attempting to strengthen the squad is ensuring it is balanced in key positions. While Erik is predominantly a left back, he has also played for his country as a central defender, so he gives us other options. We need good quality in our starting eleven and good quality back-up for all areas, which Erik will certainly give us defensively.”

The History

Pieters initially started out as a central midfielder before being converted to a defender upon joining the FC Utrecht youth system. Making his debut as an 18-year-old in 2006, he produced two goals and three assists over a couple of seasons before PSV came calling in July 2008. His time in Eindhoven has been plagued by injury, though – knee, metatarsal (twice) and hand injuries (caused by his decision to punch a window after being sent off) have seen him sidelined for months at a time. As a result, he featured just 93 times in the Dutch top-flight over five years at the club, providing a total of nine assists.

On the international stage, Pieters helped Holland to the European U21 Championship Trophy back in 2008 and has since went on to represent the senior side on 17 occasions, though missed out on last year’s Euro 2012 due to injury.

The Prospects

While Hughes talked up the new boy’s versatility, it seems certain Pieters has been purchased to solve the Potters’ problematic left-back area. Tony Pulis utilised Marc Wilson, Andy Wilkinson, Geoff Cameron and even Robert Huth on the left of his defence last term but the Dutchman is determined to nail down a regular role, saying:

“I’ve had a few injuries but that’s all in the past now; I feel really good and can’t wait for my time as a Stoke City player to start. My first job is to defend but I always want to attack and contribute as much as I can for the team. I’ve played a couple of times in the centre of defence as well but left back is my position.”

Pieters’ runs down the left look set to offer Stoke more of an attacking approach from deep as Hughes attempts to bring a little more flair to their football after seasons of dour displays under Pulis. The above-mentioned quartet managed a single assist between them all season – alarmingly, a tally mirrored by Matt Etherington and Michael Kightly, who started a combined 28 games on the left of midfield.

With creativity required throughout the team in order to help address the dire 34 goal haul from last season, the Dutchman certainly looks fundamental to Hughes’ plans, with the likes of Wilson and Wilkinson set to play the part of bench-warmers. While a consistency of starts looks on the cards – providing he steers clear of injury, of course – price remains an issue for the Potters rearguard options after they shipped a mere 45 times in Pulis’ last season.

A rise across the Fantasy games for Asmir Begovic is anticipated – popular opinion anticipates a move to 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for the stopper, while there’d be no real surprise if Huth and Ryan Shawcross come in at a similar cost. Given that Pieters looks likely to be nailed-on under Hughes he may well follow suit; such a scenario may ultimately leave the Stoke right-back spot as the best value – with Ryan Shotton, Cameron and Wilkinson all capable of filling in, the hope is their prices will remain a little lower due to the uncertainty, affording us a cheap option around the 5.0 mark.

The opening fixtures hardly fall in Stoke’s favour, though, and even if Pieters is handed a more favourable cost across the Fantasy games, initial investment seems unlikely. Hughes’ rein kicks off with trips to Liverpool, West Ham and Arsenal in the opening five and with a home clash against City also on the cards, the Gameweek 2 visit of Palace seems the only kind favour over that period. As featured in our recent series of rotation articles, a Stoke/Norwich combination has plenty potential for the season ahead, though whether Hughes can bring an extra attacking verve to the Potters’ play without sacrificing some of the resilience instilled under Pulis remains to be seen.

Anyone fitting a Newcastle option into their keeper/defence rotation plans for the start of next season. Half decent run in the first 7-10 game weeks?

The fixtures point towards some potential nice returns for their defence at least in that time frame. But after last seasons show, I'm not sure I'd bank them.

Any seasoned veteran thoughts on this one?

It all comes down to price. At the moment I'm planning on 1 big hitter, 1 medium priced defender with good fixtures to play most/every week and 3 cheap ones to rotate.

If there's a starting defender at Newcastle for £4.5m or less, then I'll definitely include them in the pool of cheap defenders I'd consider.

However, if they're more, I certainly wouldn't consider them worth playing most/every week and would probably ignore them. They had a good season a in 11-12, but that was a long time ago and they were poor last season.

It all comes down to prices and relative value I guess!

Looking outside today and it appears to have the makings of a nice day, this got me thinking what's the coldest football ground you have all been to, I live in Oldham and belive me its not nicknamed Ice Station Zebra for nothing, as anyone on here who has been will probably agree.

Gillingham away on Boxing Day. Terracing for the away fans, and it felt like we were standing on the North Pole, the cold wins coming in from the Channel were horrific.

Anyone remember pop star Rick Waller? As we were heading to the ground he was walking towards us down this alley. About a dozen of us all had to inch backwards out of the alley to let him through, that was the highlight.

I've been to 50 grounds and Oldham was cold but the coldest that I've ever been was an FA Cup 3rd round replay at Plough Lane, Wimbledon.

Uncovered terrace, rained the whole game. T-shirt, jumper, big thick winter coat all soaked through. Water pouring off my hat like a tap. Terrible game 0-0

Extra time and it was still raining. Tony Cascarino missed a sitter, still raining. The last minute of extra time Dave Beasant goal kick and the ball splashed in the mud and fell to Alan Cork who stuck it in the net. 1-0 and the only good thing about the whole trip was eating the pot noodle when we got back on the coach.

Never been so cold at a game.

I find it interesting how quite a few on here expect Stoke's defensive resilience to decrease now that Hughes has taken over. Fulham got 14 clean sheets in the 10/11 season, so hughes CAN get it right occasionally. He had an awful spell at QPR but Redknapp struggled as well. IMO Hughes will do a very good job at Stoke, and I can see them breaking the top 10 next season.

    Thoughts?

I reckon he will do alright, barring his spell at QPR he has done a decent job wherever he has been. There is already a good defensive organisation established at Stoke and based on Hughes defensive record at his previous clubs he should be able to maintain this.

For those looking for a premium defender which of this expensive elite group are you considering?

As Chris Glover has pointed out on several occasions, investing in highly priced defenders rarely justifies itself. At best, a "scoring" defender notches once every 8-9 matches.

Baines defies this though and deserves some attention. His blank period between gwk 5-20 last season permanently put me off him, I'm afraid.

Playing under a new manager means we may have to adopt a cautious approach at first with him.

A better bet would be look at the 5-6.5 range and choose someone that regularly garners cs with the odd assist/goal or two.

I think the prices will be too prohibitive for me to entertain a big hitting defender this FPL season.

Vertonghen could be the one who gets 4 or 5 goals and a few assists. Baines will be minus pens if, as expected, he goes to Its.

Oddly enough, Arsenal defenders may come in at around the £5-5.5m range and could be the best value for top 4 defence.

I think anything £6m and over is going to have a negative impact on people's mids and striker options.

I doubt he'll be 4 mill, more like 4.5. Bruce liked to play 3 at the back with Elmohamady and Brady as wing backs so they're 2 to look out for if they end up as defenders. The back 3 tended to be Faye, McShane, and Chester and they seem to be pretty nailed on.

He has a phenomenal scoring record, albeit in the Danish League.

Could be worth a punt at £5m especially if he frees up enough funds for an extra big hitter in midfield or up front.

Could also end up being another Pog or Boselli though.

was going through the gw scores of last season and i noticed that i never owned Aguero or Rooney all season which was actually very surprising since i love those two players.

and i think it improved my overall rank as well as they did not justify their "big hitter" tag.

seems a possibility, was just researching what is and isnt an assist and came across the article. it appears there isn't an assist for an own goal too

the 'was it an own goal?' debates should be fiercer though. if a goal means 4-6 points and an own goal means 0 points (rather than still 3 for an assist)

Yeah, I remember the Vertonghen goal at old Trafford this season was given as a Vertonghen goal on fpl but it went down as an og with opta. Like the grav by the way, just a shame he got fired last week. 😉

"It seems everyone has an opinion and that opinion changes over time. And that's where Opta differs. We have been collecting data since 1996 and our definition has remained consistent, so if you want to compare Pele's assists from the 1970 World Cup with Kaka's from 2010, or Cantona's assists with Bergkamp's assists and with Lampard's assists in the Premier League, you know it will be like for like and consistent right across the 3000 or so games we analyse in full detail every year across the world. "

In my opinion that last sentence is total and utter bobbins.

Yes the definition has remained consistent, but it's a definition that is impossible to interpret and apply consistently because it involves guessing as to what the player making the pass was thinking.

Take the very common scenario of a player attacking the byline and cutting the ball back towards the penalty spot and an attacker scores from the cut back. Assist? He didn't know the attacker was definitely there, or who it was, yet OPTA would give that as an assist. Same scenario but the ball gets deflected a bit, the intent was the same, the result was the same, OPTA wouldn't give that as an assist.

Or say a player crosses the ball and it goes just over the head of his intended target, but another attacker behind him nods it in, assist? There's no way to conclusively demonstrate intent, but I bet OPTA would give it. Say instead the ball got deflected a bit but ended up going towards the player he actually intended to pick out, in that scenario OPTA wouldn't give the assist - by OPTA's own stated principles they've got it wrong. Consistency?

These scenarios will occur much more frequently then the occasional counterintuitive assist award under the current system, there are a handful of those a year, there would be a handful of these a week.

Cheers for posting, this article sums up the problem quite well!

I don't like the idea of defining an assist by 'intention'; this is where it gets messy.

How can you know what is intentional and what isn't? I think it just opens up a huge can of worms and makes it even harder to have an objective ruling.

Since this whole assist malarkey has caused nothing but trouble, how about reducing the points awarded for an assist and perhaps award chances created?

Forget assist awards and just give a point for a chance created. I don't know how OPTA award a "creation", the wording implies there would be some subjectivity there too, but if it's just one point, and those points would get spread out and have less effect on the bonus points etc then I don't think that's as a big a problem as handing out 3 points plus potential bonus points on a single guess.

Exactly. Plus, if a player consistently creates chances, they should arguably be getting more credit, since it implies that they're doing their job but the players around them are letting them down. Of course, the definition of a chance created has to be looked at. Perhaps it would be limited to big chances.

I would still argue that assists be rewarded, just less points.

But by the same logic, a striker shouldn't be punished because his midfielders aren't creating chances for him so do you give him points for making good runs. It gets too strange so i'm not for points for chances created. On the other hand, points for interceptions / balls recovered should probably be added for mids so the defensive mids aren't so irrelevant.

It's a good point, one could also argue that defenders should get points based on their individual performances rather than a stat that applies to, and emanates from, the entire team. I expect that it's this precedent that's prevented FPL messing too much with the format, but by introducing a stat based bonus points system they've kinda crossed the rubicon. The moment you start using sophisticated stats to award some of the points, you end up having to explain why you're not using sophisiticated stats to award all of the points.

Good point, but I think by awarding points for assists, they also stepped into risky territory.

The problem here is the quality of chances created. The likes of jarvis and baines create a bucket load of chances but they are not clear cut since the chance is usually created via a cross where the striker has to try and control a volletly or header compared to say some of the chances the likes of mata or cazorla set up which can be tap ins or setting a striker up for a one on one with the goalkeeper.

Would not be on favour of a point for every successful cross as I think this is the worst kind of chance with the lowest probability of conversion.

If they redefine assists based on opta stats then the potential player pool will be reduced as we will all be looking more at tge goalscorers due to less assists for the assisters (if you get my meaning).

Hope they leave it the same tbh

i reckon the opposite, the true assisters will remain the same whilst those who rely on parried shots etc will lose out, that's usually the strikers/goalscorers imo. for example RVP got 15 FPL assists, but just 8 official ones

Sorry ab but if there are going to be a lot less assists and there is going to be no change in the amount of goals scored then goalscorers will be even more important. How many points less would the likes of silva and mata get if they were using opta? I dont think they would be viable options at all and the likes of walters with his pens would become a lot more desirable.

                45 successful crosses
                46 through balls
                103 chances created
                8 assists

I'm not sure how many of those assists are 'dubious' and might not have counted if the rules were stricter as discussed above.

You can't the stat for 'big chance created' for the player or the team. We can see that he created 1/5 of City's chances, so let's guess 100 of City's 505 chances created were big chances (the worst teamconceded around 100).

Based on this, we can guess that he created 20 big chances. If the assist point were reduced somewhat, perhaps to 1 or 2 points, and he got a 10-30 extra points for big chances, think he wouldn't score too highly at all.

This is all guesswork of course but it would be interesting to see the true stats!

Sherlock is very good although it's only 2 seasons of 3 episodes each (1.5 hour each though).

The Killing is rubbish really, I've seen the first 2 seasons and it was terrible. It was actually going to be pulled off the air recently but it finally got renewed for season 3.

The Sopranos and House of Cards are MUST sees IMO, highly recommended if you liked the Wire.

        Good shout this.

It will be an unfashionable player from a team that underperformed last season and is perhaps playing in a new position/system or under a new manager.

In Gabby's case, he's a proven FPL talent so I see no reason why it won't be him!

If he comes in at £6m or less, he'll be good value over the season IMO. It's a shame about is opening fixtures though.

But would you use a striker spot on him? That's the problem. That position is too crucial for a gamble like that.

Many will be looking for a cheap striker and secure options could be low on the ground this year. If he had good fixtures, I'd consider him for sure but I think his fixtures might be enough to put me off. If he shows form and his price is reasonable, I'd definitely consider him after his bad run of fixtures.

Raheem Sterling will be a forgotten man but if he gets over the chronic thigh injury that kept him out of the second half of the season he could be a bargain pick again.

I think he needs to go out on loan, that thigh injury only surfaced toward the end of the season, considering he had played 30+ games in the first half of the season and needed a rest i'd say this season he won't get enough game time to warrant investment. At this point in his career he just needs experience to progress.

Snodgrass became a bit of a yellow card magnet at the end of the season.
Was lucky on a couple of occasions not to get a red. Otherwise I'd jump at him.

for this season i will take a few gambles, them being toivonen ( if he signs) who i think could mimic michu's last season, also considering ben arfa, lallana, coutinho, mirallas, oxlade (given the starts). There are lots of gems out there, just need to be willing to take a gamble

    Rotating Defenders.

thinking of only having 2 cheapies. If you can get a 3rd one to rotate, I suppose all the better but im not going to bust a gut trying to get this. It will be inevitable that a player who comes into some form who you will want to get which will blow away your rotating players.

    discuss....

Yep its not worth getting too carried away with a rotating defence. I think a good mixture of a rotating option, some nailed on defenders with good fixtures and a big hitter is the way to go.
