Scout Report – Nathan Redmond

Chris Hughton continued to add to the Norwich first-team squad yesterday after
signing Nathan Redmond on a four-year deal from Birmingham City. The 19-year-old makes his way Carrow Road in a deal believed to be around £3m and is the Canaries’ second new face of the summer, following the arrival of Ricky Van Wolfswinkel from Sporting Lisbon.

Having been handed his league debut by the former Blues boss back in 2010, the highly-rated teenager – who was also linked with a move to Swansea – was delighted to be reunited with Hughton once again…

“I’d probably say I’ve played some of my best football under him so far. He was very influential on my career at Birmingham. He gave me the chance to play and the chance to express myself every time that I stepped on to the field and I feel like on the bigger stage he’ll do exactly the same thing.”

The History

During his debut season, Redmond was tentatively eased into action at St Andrews. Making 19 of his 24 appearances from the bench, he grabbed five goals and a pair of assists as Hughton guided the midlands outfit to the Championship play-offs. Last time out, the youngster managed 22 starts and 16 sub appearances, returning a couple of goals and six assists under new boss Lee Clark. On the international stage, Redmond has represented England at every level from Under 16 to Under 21, producing four goals from 38 games.

The Prospects

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Hughton admitted Redmond’s versatility is likely to be key over the season ahead. Predominantly right-footed, he also offers an option as an inverted winger on the opposite flank and could be utilised in “the hole” in the Canaries default 4-4-1-1 formation:

“Nathan is a young and exciting player that I had the pleasure of working with at Birmingham. He’s someone we can bring in to the forward areas and primarily has played on either wing in his career so far, but can also play off the front. He’s very keen to develop his own game, he’s one of these lads that likes to be on the training pitch and is usually one of the last ones off the training pitch. I’m sure the move won’t phase him but this is still a part of his development and one he is very much looking forward to.”

With Van Wolfswinkel looking set to be handed the lone forward role and Robert Snodgrass nailing down the right wing berth, Redmond should offer competition to Anthony Pilkington on the left and Wes Hoolahan as the most advanced midfielder behind Van Wolfswinkel. Bearing in mind his side notched just 41 times last time round, Hughton is in dire need of extra firepower in midfield – Hoolahan scored three times from 33 appearances (28 starts), while Pilkington was just a little more prolific with five strikes in 25 starts.

In terms of game time, much may also depend on whether the Canaries manage to capture summer target Ola Toivonen – the Swede would tuck in behind Van Wolfswinkel if he arrives from PSV Eindhoven, forcing Redmond to rely more on appearances from the bench unless he forces Pilkington down the pecking order on the left. Likely to be classified as a midfielder across the Fantasy games, Redmond should come in around 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – potentially, he could be a decent mid-price option though concerns remain as to whether he will nail down a regular role or be tentatively eased into the first-team fold, with appearances as an impact sub late on in games either out wide or through the middle if Norwich move to two up front mid-match.

Hughton’s line-ups over pre-season should shed more light on the situation but with home games against Everton, Southampton and Villa in the first five Gameweeks, in addition to a trip to promoted Hull, the Canaries certainly have the platform to be quick off the mark. Whether Redmond can offer us a viable alternative to Snodgrass over those matches or, indeed, the season ahead is perhaps debatable, with the Scot remaining the most likely source of points in Hughton’s midfield.

    Illaramendi 😀

Why are Real Madrid signing him?
Well Xabi Alonso recently declined a deal, and he wants to go out of the club for free. Illarramendi will be a perfect replacement for him.

What sort of a player is Illarramendi?
Illarramendi is a perfect carbon copy of Xabi Alonso, and is set to take his place both in Real Madrid and in Spain. He's a Real Sociedad youth product, and he can pluck accurate long balls. His ability to spot players over quite a distance, makes him lethal.

Is 30M too much for Illarramendi?
In my opinion. No. This lad is fuming on talent and is one of the top talents in Spain. Transfer prices are normally decided on form, on age and on team performances. Illarramendi is only 23 and just had a jubilant season.

What will happen to Khedira after Illarramendi?
Nothing? Lol honestly speaking Illarramendi is a replacement for Xabi and not for Khedira. I'd say both will get to play. Which is good for the team. Xabi will turn 32 soon, and he needs one final push. Illarramendi, could be that one final push. I feel Modric is more of a Khedira replacement.

Should we expect Illarramendi to start every game next season?
No, that's because Xabi is still with the team. We might expect Illarramendi to start first few games, and that's because Xabi recently underwent a surgery, just in case he's not back in time. Illarramendi will need to prove his potential in the first season. If he does so, he's going to be a regular starter in the 2014/2015 season.

Deciding may try the SKY game for the first time, grateful for any guidance on :-

Do players transfer fees stay the same throughout the whole season and not go up or down as in FPL ?

Is it similar to FPL in that you put most money and strength in the front six/seven?

With all the games reading the rules and then reading them twice more could probably save you some howling errors.
I think more games will be discussed here this year as the games are launched.

Sky have quite a few new rules, so what held good last year is probably valid but may alter positional strengths. Worth waiting for the others in case all have made significant rule changes.

I think you can play some of the games Saniul. Email them and ask if in doubt.

Cross border gaming laws often preclude outside players from winning prizes. So you'd have to join a cash ML.

Not that nice. My GW1 score was only just inside the top million.
We had unlimited transfers in GW2 that season because of the FPL starting cock-up, so I got rid of Carroll and Downing at that point - but I brought in Suarez and Jose Enrique amongst others in my replacement squad. By GW6, there were no Liverpool players in my squad - shame!

One of the reasons I lost interest in the Sky game last year was that I never understood the points showing for each player, ie if I clicked 'latest points' my team seemed to have random points scores inc several players showing zero even though they had scored etc... Me being a noob or did others find this also? 😕

Yeah he's had Everton consistently punching above their weight year in year out. Definitely deserves it. Can be a very different thing succeeding at a huge club, lots of pressure. Personally I'd love to see him fail 😛 He'll do well though I think

That is stupid. Doesn't matter how many times you change the name, the club never does.

He has a fair point but they still look shite. What might look funky or different stateside looks garish here. I saw a white jersey, possibly a training top, didn't even walk over to the rail to inspect it. The bottom on the front looked like a painter's mess. The new home jersey is very similar to the old except for a white trim on v-neck instead of the collar and this years and last years look flimsy. Say what you want about Adidas, Reebok and Umbro but they were not flimsy.

I think I was aiming more towards the monotonization and monopolisation of the market where punters are expected to fork out more money on what amounts to the same jersey with a different badge.

But yeah, the stitching was lovely 🙂

No need to bring up a nationality when talking about supporting a club.

Fergie is still there and will offer his advice when needed. Neville and Giggs are very good coaches to have among the staff and Moyes is a very good manager who demands alot from his players. The standards won't drop, no chance.

I think City and Chelsea have more work to do than United.

Same team as last year with Thiago added. They breezed the league last year, the players aren't going to fall apart just because a manager left.
