Pre-Season

Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Budget Defenders

With the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game now up and running, Fantasy managers are scouring the market for value as they piece together their pre-season squads. After running the rule over Goalkeepers, we now take our time to look at defenders – splitting our analysis over three separate articles, we begin with the budget options as we cast an eye over those under the 5.0 mark.

Having racked up a mere five clean sheets in 2012/13, it’s no surprise to see Villa centre-halves Ron Vlaar and Ciaran Clark come in at 4.5. Looking at the new acquisitions so far this summer, left-back Antonio Luna is the most appealing cheap option in Paul Lambert’s squad, though. Providing he can cement a regular role at left-back, the Spaniard should be afforded plenty license to forage down the flank if, as anticipated, Paul Lambert maintains a 4-3-3 formation.

Cardiff duo Matthew Connolly and Mark Hudson carried plenty goal threat last term. The centre-halves notched five and four goals respectively for Malky Mackay’s side and have been slapped with a 4.5 price tag, with the Bluebirds registering 18 clean sheets in their Championship-winning season. If they can replicate their attacking endeavours, they look decent alternatives to David Marshall (4.5) between the sticks.

Over at fellow promoted club Palace, only Damien Delaney is 4.5, thanks to his three goals and two assists in 2012/13. The rest of Ian Holloway’s current defenders are listed at a mere 4.0, with Jonathan Parr looking the most viable cut-price option – he provided four assists from left-back before sustaining an ankle injury last term and is hoping to be ready in time for the new campaign. Parr could afford us a cheap, fifth bench-warming defender and is less expensive than Julian Speroni (4.5) – the keeper option at Selhurst Park.

Holloway’s side also rotate with Hull, where former Man United youth prospect James Chester featured 44 times last term. At 4.0, he seems secure for starts, though Steve Bruce’s summer shopping spree, which has so far seen Curtis Davies and Maynor Figueroa arrive (both priced at 4.5) is a little worrying, bearing in mind Bruce plans to play three at the back again. If Chester, as expected, keeps his place, a potential rotation pairing with the likes of Parr looks eye-catching at 8.0 for the duo, though with clean sheets a concern, many may choose to pick up just one player from Palace or Hull as bench fodder material.

Providing he can remain injury-free, Antolin Alcaraz could play a major part in Everton’s season if Roberto Martinez moves to 3-4-3. While the Paraguayan’s 4.5 price is cheaper than any other Toffees regular, he may struggle for investment due to potential out of position prospects elsewhere in Martinez’s defence – Fantasy managers will be keeping an eye on the goalkeeper situation at Goodison, however, with Joel Robles similarly priced. There’s more potential in Fulham’s summer signing Fernando Amorebieta, though. The Spaniard has been handed a kinder price tag than the rest of Martin Jol’s regulars – he sets you back 4.5 and is expected to be installed alongside Brede Hangeland at the heart of the back-four, with the Cottagers boss looking for a little more assurance in possession at the back.

Both Javier Garrido and Michael Turner offer a cheap route into the Norwich backline, coming in at 4.5 apiece. Turner undoubtedly looks the most appealing of the pair – he scored three times in 26 appearances last season and with Chris Hughton bringing in Martin Olsson (also 4.5), Garrido looks to have real competition for the left-back slot. With home games against Everton, Southampton and Villa allied with a trip to Villa in the opening five, the Norwich defence looks a strong shout for investment, with Turner also cheaper than keeper John Ruddy (5.0).

Newcastle’s Steven Taylor may prove a cheap option at the back for Alan Pardew’s side. The centre-half has been priced lower than most of the Magpies’ defensive regulars but could face real competition for a starting berth from Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – whoever wins the battle to partner Fabricio Coloccini in the heart of the back-four could be a budget-friendly acquisition at 4.5 and will, of course, offer a home/away partnership with Sunderland over the 38 Gameweeks. Newcastle need to improve considerably from last term, though, having conceded 68 goals – if they can even begin to approach the resilience that harvested 15 clean sheets in the 2011/12 campaign, there could be real value in the Magpies’ cut-price assets.

Southampton’s raiding full-backs Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw both look enticing at 4.5. The Saints conceded just nine times in the last 10 Gameweeks of 2012/13 and with the likes of Dejan Lovren and Victor Wanyama added to the ranks, confidence is high in their defensive potential – Clyne and Shaw should also offer attacking threat down the flanks in Mauricio Pochettino’s 4-2-3-1, with their pace and creativity in the final third key to their manager’s formation. For those eyeing up a Southampton/West Ham rotation plan, the Hammers’ James Collins also comes in at 4.5 – teaming him up with one of Clyne or Shaw will set you back 9.0, compared to a Ruddy/Jussi Jaaskelainen combination at 10.5. Both sides rotate over the entire 38 Gameweeks and would hand you (CAR, SUN, STO, WHM, EVE, CPL, SWA, MCI, FUL, AVL) over the opening 10 Gameweeks of the season.

For the Black Cats, new recruits Valentin Roberge and Modibo Diakite are also ones to consider in the budget bracket, though their prospects are somewhat hampered by a tricky first few months. With Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Tottenham all rolling up to the Stadium of Light by Gameweek 15, it’s difficult to justify any level of investment in Paolo Di Canio’s backline for the first few months, denting the prospect of a Tyne-Wear defensive partnership for just 9.0. Swansea’s fit-again Neil Taylor also comes in at 4.5. The left-back spent the vast majority of last term in the treatment room but, with Europa League duties and the Capital One Cup to defend, there’s the fear that Michael Laudrup will rotate Taylor with 5.0 priced Ben Davies from one game to the next, thus denting both players’ Fantasy potential over the upcoming campaign.

Attacking line up but no Bale? Not so sure. Carrol out so Nolan will suffer. Don't really like Yaya and not sure of Paulinho yet.

Bales to expensive. For me its either RVP or Bale. prefer to have RVP IMO. Nolan has a good run in of fixtures.. and pauliniho looks a bargain going of the con fed cup!

But Bale only scored 13 fewer points than RVP last season? But without Carroll Nolan will be dampened. Paulinho is completely untested here.

You have 8.5 to complete this backline so that you could play four of them most weeks:

What's everyone thinking on Van Wolfswinkel?

I have never seen him, love the name and seems to have a great record in Portugal (28 goals in 55 appearances last season).

Also playing in an improving Norwich side.

However some comments on here have suggested he wastes a lot of chances as well.

Who has seen him play and how would you rate him?

Just interesting that people here consider him a great buy given that record when Bony got 37 goals in 36 games last season. I think Wolfy is a decent striker. That's it though, a lot being made of him and I'm not quite sure why yet.

Hi guys. I've been wondering how to manage to benefit from the chelsea dgw and still be able to cope with the uncertainties surrounding the beginning of the season.

This is the latest version of my team. Any thoughts?

    Boruc / Mannone/Westwood

Azpilicueta / A. Cole / (Whittaker / Shaw / Baker) these last three can easily be changed.

    Mata / Bale / Silva / Mirallas / Thomas

    Kone / Lambert / Berbatov

The idea is to either WC or do Luiz + Kone --> Coleman + Podolski in first two gw.

Captaincy to Mata gw 1 and shared by Bale and Silva in the 9 gw to come (a lot will change these plans)!

    Any thoughts? 1/10?

In the past I've considered pairing cheap to mid priced players from teams who 'rotate' to get all home games or good fixtures but haven't actually done it. This season I'm seriously considering it but I'd like a few views from people who've tried it...

I know there's exceptions and it's probably too difficult to gauge accurately, but generally speaking, do you feel it works more successfully than say, bringing in a better player and bench fodder?

I made far too many changes last season replacing my 'good' players rather than playing my bench fodder when something happened to my good players and I lost too much ground... in theory I could see the rotation of mid priced players working... what do you think?

I agree with this. I believe you need 1-2 great players with good or great fixtures each week in order to not loose out in captaincy points. Another precaution is to not exhaust all the good players in a certain price lvl for example 7m mids. otherwise an evenly invested team gives you the benefit of flexibility and if you get the right players preferably all safe starters surely can give you great value and stable points as well!

    Why no Continho Love Anymore?

I have noticed that before the pricing came out a lot of people were talking up Continho as a good attacking option. He came out at 9.0 when I think most people were expecting 8.0 to 8.5 and since then I think I have hardly seen a RMT with him in it. I too discarded him as too expensive but I have just been trying to run a Uber 5 midfield team and when doing my analysis and he doesn't seem to come out to badly.

Continho only played 10 games at the end of last year and it would be reasonable to expect he might improve a little this year being young and still finding his feet in the EPL. When comparing his stats below I think he could be a really good differential punt if people are going to shy away thinking he is too expensive.

    Price Games PPG GPG APG
    Continho 9.0 10 7 0.3 0.7
    Bale 12.0 32 7.8 0.66 0.28
    Mata 10.5 30 7 0.36 0.6
    Santi 10.0 37 5.5 0.32 0.35
    Walcott 9.5 25 7.8 0.56 0.52
    Hazard 9.5 29 6.6 0.31 0.55
    Silva 9.0 27 5.4 0.15 0.44

If he can reflect the stats from last year over a full season (I understand that is a risk) then he is potentially much better value than Santi or Hazard who seem to be getting much more love at the moment. And his price looks positively fantastic compared to Silva.

Having done all that he is now definitely in firm consideration for my team.

So from looking at popular potential cheap gk/defenders with good fixtures and rotation, one low priced striker and one low priced mid I've come up with:

    Mannone

Turner (nor) | Collins | Shaw

    Bale | Hazard | Snoddy | Walcott | Bellamy

    RVP | Lambert

Subs: Boruc, Turner (Car), Chester, Gayle

The thing that its mostly lacking is City cover, as people have said Dzeko maybe an option depending on game time. Gayle to Aspas and Snoddy downgraded if Aspas nails a place down

      Hate this, sorry.
Given wont play, get anyone else, he will leave (i thought he already left)
Terry a risk as 3 good rivals
Wilshere is fpl nightmare. No goals plentiful yellow cards, always injured.
Aspas, unproven, might not play always, 1 top flight season ever even though he is 25.
      Collback offers nothing bar cheapness.

I actually quite like this team. I too have played with boruc / given and while it frees some money up it is a pretty high risk strategy at the back.

I think your Defense/Mid/Forwards are well balanced actually.

Wilshere is a steal at 6.5 if he stays injury free + plays more attacking this year. but right now Walcott is the right man to pick from ARS mid, given value & attacking potential.

Not sure of Nolan's potential without Carroll, and think you should have one of Snoddy/RvW for their great 3 early fixtures.

Just playing around really, but a Bale and RVP combo is actually very viable and easily achievable, I never really attempted to bother to be fair.

    Boruc, Mannone
    Clyne, Vlaar, Collins, Cuellar, Olsson
    Bale, Hazard, Snodgrass, Kagawa, Sissoko
    RVP, Bent, Rodriguez

I could probably make it better, but its 2:42 and I am going to sleep!

i agree, it's not that difficult to get Bale + RVP combo but still produce a decent, challenging team. Although the team may lose some big players, e.g you can't have both another City big forward or 3 CHE confirm starters to go with it.

otoh, i don't think you should get Kagawa when you are getting RVP too. And Siss? i'd stay clear for now, many other good options.

No- bale as my spurs coverage and unless they start doing really well, I don't want to double up on them

No- wait and see how rotation would work as I expect Chelsea will still be playing the season with one striker in their formation most games. If nailed on, depends on if aguero or sturridge are not performing

Wait and see for both for me but never say never

Anyone else noticed that there are hardly any world class strikers up for selection this year...the list goes:
    RVP (good, but very pricey)
Suarez (You don't know what you're doing if you pick him)
    Aguero (I'd have him)
Rooney (Dodgy future, lost heart at Man Utd)
    Torres (ehhh)

then you get onto good strikers but not "captainable" imo.

All about the midfield for me.
