Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Premium Defenders

Our fourth article focussing on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List is rolled out this evening. With the Goalkeepers analysis followed by articles on the Budget and Mid-Price backline options, we this time turn to the premium priced defenders on offer for the season ahead:

Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge means the Chelsea backline is currently a source of uncertainty for Fantasy managers. While Petr Cech is nailed-on in goal and Ashley Cole (6.5) looks certain to retain the left-back role, the attacking potential offer up by both David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic would be preferable – with both players setting us back 6.5, though, it’s very much a case of “wait and see” over the pre-season. There’s the hope that Cesar Azpilicueta, at 6.0, can nail down the right-back berth – having produced six assists in his debut season, the Spaniard’s contribution down the flank could prosper in either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. Alternatively, Mourinho could reinstall the similarly priced John Terry (6.0) as a regular at the heart of his defence once again.

Unsurprisingly, Leighton Baines has been handed the highest valuation of any defender after racking up 177 points in the season gone by. At 7.5, the Everton full-back could be moved to the left of Roberto Martinez’s midfield in a 3-4-3 for the season ahead – while this would undoubtedly further his points potential, Seamus Coleman, at 5.0, could offer superior value in spite of Baines’ spot-kicks and set-piece duties. Indeed, a mooted move to United would likely see him stripped of penalties, with a decrease in corners and set-pieces also on the cards should he join up with David Moyes again. Surprisingly, despite his superb season, Baines would have ranked as the fifth highest defender in the new Bonus Points System (BPS) – he was top for bonus in the old EA PPI based system, by comparison.

Liverpool trio Glen Johnson, Daniel Agger and Jose Enrique all come in at 6.0. All three exceed 130+ points last time out, with Enrique just eight points behind Johnson despite playing seven games less – of the trio, it was Agger who would have finished highest in new BPS, though. When applied to last season’s games, the Dane finished third top for defenders in the BPS, with Johnson in ninth – this could well be significant, given Agger picked up just eight bonus points in the old system in 2012/13. A regular role for the 5.0 priced Kolo Toure would see many set their targets on the Ivorian, though, while both Liverpool keepers also come in at 5.5.

Vincent Kompany (6.5) remains the costliest backline option at City, with full-backs Pablo Zabaleta and Gael Clichy both coming in at 6.0. The question remains whether the Etihad side will remain as resolute at the back with new boss Manuel Pellegrini determined to go on the offensive – if City fail to mirror the 18 clean sheet returns and mere 34 goals against harvested under Roberto Mancini’s final year at the helm, Matija Nastasic (5.5) is a less-expensive gamble.

Elsewhere in Manchester, United have four defenders priced at 6.0 or over. Providing Baines doesn’t make the Old Trafford switch, Patrice Evra looks the most reliable in terms of game time – the Frenchman remains firmly ahead of Alex Buttner in the left-back pecking order and while he’s the costliest backline option for David Moyes’ side at 6.5, his four goals and six assists in 2012/13 highlight Evra’s attacking appeal. Intriguingly, similar to Baines, he doesn’t far quite as well in the BPS – he was ranked second for PPI last year but would have been seventh highest backline option under the BPS scoring system. As witnessed towards the final few months of Sir Alex Ferguson’s time in charge, Phil Jones’ (6.0) versatility could prove crucial, with the former Blackburn man offering the Red Devils options at right-back, centre-half and central midfield but we’ve yet to see where he fits into Moyes’ plans. Rafael and Nemanja Vidic also come in at 6.0 – the right-back could well be a secure starter under the new manager and if Vidic can keep injury-free, he’s another who could thrive under the new Bonus Point System.

Finally, Tottenham pair Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are the last two defenders in our analysis. The former’s consistency of starts, in addition to six assists from the previous year harvested 116 points but, at 6.0, he’s likely to convince few Fantasy managers into taking a punt, with better value available elsewhere. Vertonghen started last season at 6.5 but has risen to 7.0 this time round, having produced five goals and three assists in his debut campaign at White Hart Lane. The Belgian’s all-round game looks set to be significantly rewarded by the new Bonus Points System – not only would he have finished top defender and number one Tottenham player (by a considerable margin over Gareth Bale) in 2012/13, Vertonghen would have been second overall only to Robin Van Persie in the BPS rankings.

Indeed, the comparison with Bale is particularly key and suggests the Welshman may struggle to earn maximum bonus with such regularity – a crucial factor when deciding on the armband. Last season Bale bettered his team-mate by 709 points to 479 points in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index and subsequently racked up 50 bonus points to Vertonghen’s 12 but under the new system, the Belgian’s all-round game see him come out top by 289 points to 209. We’ll have a more detailed analysis of the brand new Bonus Points System in an upcoming article.

Yep. Very tempting at 5.5m. Will put a 4.0 dud in and just play Mignolet every week and it'll be the same price as rotating Foster - Boruc or another 5.0 - 4.5 pair.

Have to work out if the extra 1m could be better spent elsewhere. For example there are plenty of really good 5.5 defenders (Mertzaker) i could upgrade Clyne for 1m that might get more extra points than upgrading Boruc to Mingolet

Initially I think the 1m can be better spent, as lets face it defenses are not the tightest at start of season and bank balance is invaluable. When you generate some extra money, then I think Migs will be the way to go. Some people did the same with De Gea for 2nd half of season and that paid off.

Although if a 4.5 GK turns out to be the next Begovic/Jaask/Verm etc, then they are an obvious pick as the extra millions spent on GK don't get you a considerable amount of more points.

Why not if you plan on playing one keeper the whole season?

The only times I'd see it as a problem are double gameweeks and potential injuries to your starting keeper.

          Here's some food for thought:

One of the top two pairings is Foster - Boruc

          Cleansheets last year:
          West Brom - 8
          Southampton - 7

          Liverpool - 16

Add in the times that you choose the wrong one in a given gameweek/they both get one in the same week, I'm pretty sure you'd come out on top overall if your Liverpool keeper played every game.

Is it worth diminishing the whole dynamic of my team in order to get RVP. Will it be benefical to have RVP over a value striker a the expense of missing out on other big hitting midfielder's points. I personally see much more consistency and value in midfield which is why I have opted for the budget-friendly value options in the front 3.

I doubt they will all be in form all at once. This question is more to see if people take into consideration the captaincy variable.

Even on a bad day RVP got 5pts last season.

Some times City just play completely shite and Aguero ends up on 2, same thing with Walcott.

This is a toughie, with the addition of RvW, Snod will be a good asset with corners and FKs in his locker. However if Walcott emulates the same form as last year and gets around 3k minutes he is bound to get 230+ points. I'm not sure if Aguero can pick up 200+ considering his rivalry with negredo and jovetic and where pellegrini will deploy him. So I'll say this if you want guarantee go with RVP + Snod, if you wanna take a punt Aguero + Walcott could work out exceptionally well.

RVP or not. That is the fundamental preseason question. With Negredo's move and Rooney's potential move or frustrations, I think RVP is becoming more important than last season, however, his price tag will scare a few off. I am going A.

You have the team balance all wrong.

If you're new to FPL, strikers are the ones who rack up the points. You have 2 useless strikers atm, I suggest you replace them with some useful ones.

Coutinho is not worth his price.

Some mid-priced midfielders worth considering are Nolan, Snodgrass and Mirallas.

Thanks for the advice, appreciate that it was honest.Well, this is my 3rd season so i aint new here! Just think that with a 3-5-2 i have a better chance of racking up more points, especially with the new bonus point system in place

Don't be fooled by the new bonus system, it'll still heavily favor goal scorers.

Just a heads up Sturridge is the same price as Coutinho, and I'd much rather have him up front than Coutinho out wide.

This is troubling me too. Currently I have Mig Boruc, but downgrading Boruc would allow me to switch a 4.0 defender to Clyne or Turner. I think I will get more use out of the 0.5 with an upgrade to my third defender, who will likely play most weeks. Never mind, this question seems solved to me. Thanks.

He only scored 6 less pts leading the atack for United. Still the same old default captain that delivers week in week out...

He wasn't as explosive as he was at Arsenal.

Bale could be a better captain every week.

Very similar to mine Forca, instead I have Jrod and Mignolet rather than Mannone and Lambert but with slightly better defence. I'll give it a 8. Migolet instead of Mannone would help considerably but you'd have to downgrade lambert to jrod.

I'm uncertain about Silva. He's a wait and see.

All these new signings might diminish his fantasy output.

Where else do you suggest you can get city coverage? Aguero is vying for the top spot with negredo and may be pushed out wide which can diminish his fantasy output. But with Silva 2.0m cheaper he appears to be viable option

what about in the 2011/12 season when he was playing behind the striker to accomodate balotelli could the same thing not happen in order to accomodate negredo?

Not a bad team Forca! Well-rounded but if Rvp or Aguero go on a scoring streak you could be in trouble!

Ok, this is my main predicament that I can't get over:

Do I go with 3 big hitters in the midfield and then rotate Koren and Thomas

    OR

Do I go with 2 big hitters in the midfield and get Snodgrass and Mirallas and Thomas effectively becoming a bench fodder

No.1 Wheres the rest of your team?
No. 2 Instead of whittaker get m.turner
No.3 Schurrle isnt guaranteed to start if you want chelsea go for hazard or you can opt for mirallas/snod/nolan/barfa
No. 4 Dont like Navas go for Silva instead and having both Silva + Aguero may be overkill with the competition from navas, negredo and jovetic.
No. 5 Get Jrod instead of Anelka.

        given, shaw, baker, thomas

        Turner ok

Schurrle will be mustard and will rise after the first g.w. Money on it.

Navas yea I see the point. On the fence as some say.

Hmm big season for Rodriguez? Do they have fixtures and have they strengthened? I know they finished well
