Scout Reports

Scout Report – Gary Hooper

Norwich boss Chris Hughton made his seventh signing of the summer transfer window earlier today by acquiring long-term target Gary Hooper from Glasgow Celtic. The 25-year-old arrives at Carrow Road on a three-year deal – though the club have the option of another year – for a reported fee of around £5m and follows the likes of Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, Nathan Redmond, Leroy Fer and Martin Olsson to the club as Hughton looks to push on from last season’s eleventh place finish.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Hooper revealed his determination to prove himself in England’s top-flight after a highly successful stint at Parkhead under Neil Lennon:

“There’s been a lot of speculation going back to January and I’m pleased to have finally put pen to paper and joined Norwich. I can’t wait to get down to work, to get training with the lads and working with the coaching staff. I knew Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood from my youth days at Spurs so it will be great to be back working with them in the Premier League. I have scored goals at every level I have played at and the challenge of playing in the Premier League is really exciting to me.”

The History

A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Hooper was released by the north London club at the age of 14 back in 2002. His career got underway at Conference club Grays Athletic but, after scoring 20 times in 69 appearances, he was released again in the summer of 2006. Picked up by Southend United, he scored just twice in 32 appearances over two years and was farmed out on loan to Leyton Orient (four games, two goals) and Hereford United (19 matches, 11 goals) before Scunthorpe paid £175,000 for his services in July 2008.

Hooper’s eye for goal was instantly in evidence for Scunthorpe. A total of 24 goals in 45 league appearances in 2008/09 saw him voted Player of the Year and helped earn the club promotion to the Championship. The goals flowed once again the following season, with 19 strikes and six assists in 35 matches persuading Celtic to shell out over £2m in the summer of 2010.

Hooper wreaked havoc in his new surrounds and was the Hoops’ top scorer in each of his three seasons at Parkhead. In just 95 league appearances, he registered an eye-catching 63 goals and 24 assists, helping the club to a couple of league titles, with two Scottish Cups also accrued.

The Prospects

Having watched his side suffer back-to-back 1-0 pre-season friendly losses, Hughton has moved quickly to address a lack of attacking edge. While Norwich were decent defensively from a Fantasy perspective last term, chalking up 10 clean sheets, a 4-4-1-1 formation failed to harvest many goals – the Canaries found the net on just 41 occasions, a tally better than only Stoke (34) and relegated QPR (30).

The earlier arrival of Van Wolfswinkel had suggested Hughton would continue with his somewhat cautious approach and roll out a lone striker system once again but Norwich’s pre-season failings have perhaps led to a change of heart. Certainly, with over £13m spent on the pair, it’s fair to assume Hooper will now be expected to line up alongside the Dutchman in a 4-4-2, potentially handing Fantasy managers greater options amongst the Carrow Road squad.

Although the former Celtic star is a little more diminutive than Van Wolfswinkel (five foot nine to six foot one), Hughton’s new forwards have relatively similar attributes – both possess good movement in the box and a penchant for playing on the shoulder of the last defender – though Hooper’s renowned work ethic and link-up play may see him drop deep more often, with his unselfishness highlighted by that average of eight assists per season at Celtic.

Yet to be listed in the Fantasy games, a price of around 6.5 or 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems on the cards, bearing in mind that Van Wolfswinkel will set you back 7.0, whilst key creative force, Robert Snodgrass, is available for 6.5.

Hooper’s addition to the Canaries ranks now gives Fantasy managers something of a dilemma. While Snodgrass dominated the scene last term, there are now further options as we consider a kind batch of opening fixtures which has Hughton’s side play host to Everton, Southampton and Villa in the opening five Gameweeks, in addition to a trip to Hull. Given his eye for goal, Hooper looks a more than viable target as we assemble our squads ahead of the season kick-off, with his arrival sure to bolster the Canaries chances of improving upon last term’s dire scoring record.

At this stage, I would 100% say the opposite. If Rooney joins, I would maybe have some more doubts. If he doesn't, I think Lukaku is in for a huge season at Chelsea

My query is 180 mins regardless of Rooney. By Villa Ba anh Torres will be available. Unless he goes large on Hull (a poss, I grant you) I could see Nando starting Villa. Just my instinct.

Forward line is appealing for the first gameweek, but what are you going to do in 3 weeks time? IMO, your team at the start of the season should look like something you imagine your team would be at the end of the season.

That being said, your midfield is solid.

    RMT

    Szczesny / Boruc

    Garrido / Clyne / Collins / Wilson / Chester

    Bale / Hazard / Walcott / Snodgrass / Thomas

    Aguero / Sturridge / J-Rod

Tried to keep it cheap at the back for the first few weeks (or at least until the summer wildcard) with the aim of getting some good rotations among the cheapies to get me decent enough points for their cost.

Heavy hitters in the midfield as a result of the cost-savings with the flexibility to jump on any bandwagons for the price rises in GW 1 - 3.

Sturridge should do well with Suarez banned, and Aguero is a season keeper for me. Not 100% sure J-rod but following the bandwagon here. Want to bring in Andy Carroll when he gets fit again.

Another Q: Is collins expected to nailed on?

Good midfield and forwards but just 1 DGW option. Not certain Aguero won't be rotated and Sturridge's fitness isn't 100% yet. Consider Lukaku and/or Benteke for GW1 , can sub both with 2FT ifir GW3 and some of 4.5 to 5.0 defenders like Bassong, Turner, Jenkinson, Kaboul, Alcaraz,Dawson, Coleman depending on nailed-onness. Collins seems nailed on, unfortunately Marc Wilson might not be 🙁

Thanks. Yeah DGW throws a spanner in the works. Prefer not to wildcard too early so I would like to build a team that lasts for 6-8 weeks by itself. But the other side of that is, you can net 20 or extra points in the first week, which is worth 4-5 transfers in itself...

Initially had Lukaku, but not sure if he'll play both games. Torres will definitely miss one game, not sure about the other. Strongly considering Benteke.

Marc Wilson was a favourite from last year 🙁

    Morning chaps,

If you were planning on WCing after GW3 this season, does the early DGW justify playing the WC straight away after GW1? The arguments in favour being:

    1) Most of the pre-season transfers will be finished by the GW2 deadline, so major reshuffling is unlikely to be required,

    2) We'll have had a glimpse of the starting 11s from GW1.

    3) An easy exit to all 3 CHE players & and AVL players you have

    4) Confidence boosting strong start to the season....

Toying with this idea and going with Guzan, Lamps, Hazard, Lukaku & Benteke from the off!

    Thoughts?

Did he? I thought he just said his game time would have to be managed. I think Lamps would get some gametime in the 2nd match even if he doesn't start, so would have the chance to get points (same goes for Lukaku).

That being said, you could be right - perhaps Luiz is the safer 3rd CHE spot.

My instinct is to try to hold on to WC 'til late season, but post GW 1 & 3 make sense if you go early. But early price rockets may not be quite like last season, Michu, Haz early form was exceptional, not the rule, I'd think.

Plenty of people did it last year, it is a reasonable tactic. Personally I think its quite wasteful especially as many will have 3 Chelsea players. You'd be hoping your Aston Villa players will do well because they will be the ones that triggers your WC.

Hi Ryan, yeah, I expect most will have 3 CHE players, but then I also expect most will ditch at least 1 in GW2, possibly more, which could lead to loss of value on players, especially if they fail in GW1.

A lot of eggs in only a few baskets, but I quite like this lot for a GW1 punt:

        GUZAN, (GIVEN)
        xxx, Collins, Cuellar/Turner, (Parr), (Chester)
        Bale, Walcott, HAZARD, xxx, (Thomas)
        BENTEKE, LUKAKU, Giroud/Sturridge

        The blanks being either
        a) Luiz & Snod
        b) Lamps & a 5.0m defender

I don't think there is any point in getting in Villa coverage (except Benteke, possibly). It may be a DGW but the two fixtures are Arsenal & Chelsea away.

My best finish was the year I played the WC after the first GW but I think I'd rather save it until the international break after 7.

Last season about 20k of the top 50k used the wildcard around wks 2-4, and about 7k kept it to wk33. Most people in top 10k waited. Somebody linked it earlier, basically the moral of the story is no bother to use it early, however most fellas top 10 k wait.

Yeah, I've been top 2k the past 2 seasons and have saved it both times until around GW30 ish. I'm just not sure it's worth the wait given future DGWs can usually be planned for and with a couple of points you're pretty much on a par with those that hold. The downside being all the point rises you miss early on etc.

yeah I like it, pretty much my plan and u have the same dgwers in mind as me except terry to lampard. With the shocking fixtures to follow no choice but wilcard if going in heavy but do love a dgw. With this in mind have also swapped rvp and Clyde to kompany and aguero for just the one week. In my 3 previous seasons have wildcarded gws 3, 2, 3 anyway so makes no difference. Prices will go up and down the same just more unpredictably right?

Mignolet / Boruc is the same price as DDG / 4.0

Original thinking behind Migs was that I would play Boruc occasionally for tough fixtures. However there are only 2 or 2 where I wiuld play him over Migs in the first half of the season - this is a waste of money isn't it? Don't really like a second keeper that won't play but if I'm not playing Boruc then no point.

Or upgrade one to DDG and downgrade the other. Not sure if DDG will outscore Migs though.

Was contemplating bringing in Negredo , however visited a Man c forum and they seem of th opinion that there will be mass rotation.
There was a poll on the site for the new signing that would perform the best , they had Navas way out in front , and Jovetic was way ahead of Negredo. What it all means i dont know , but it has put me off slightly

For those planning on an early wc:

From gw32 Man Utd have AVL, new, HUL, eve, NOR, SUN, sot
From gw32 Chelsea have cpl, STO, swa, SUN, liv, NOR, car
From gw33 Spurs have SUN, wba, FUL, sto, WHM, AVL
From gw34 Arsenal have WHM, HUL, new, WBA, nor

Some of these teams are quite likely to have doubles from European and domestic cups so chances are the end of the season is a good time to reshape for the final push in my opinion.

Not only that but you will conversely want to reduce your exposure to teams with either a nasty run-in or (even worse) nothing to play for.

Even if I go three or four players for the dgw in gw1 I will get rid of them by gw3 with two free transfers and one or two hits. I'd rather lose 8 points and keep the wc for the final furlong.

P.S. if you become a member the season ticker is a great tool...

Thing is by then we have so much money that players from the top teams will all be in our teams anyway.
Still believe the international break is the best time to wildcard, can gain so much momentum from the price rises ,
Using the wildcard late just makes it a one week wonder , but using it on the international break the benefits accrue for weeks

I agree completely the best time to wc is early to increase team value and sort out your time but I'm not convinced by international breaks as prices change slowly as most wait for transfers until after the int games to make sure no injuries. Cud argue tho that on a wc during internationals safeguards u against injuries ure team may pick up.

Wow. I was not planning on wc'ing early, but that clinches it. What an enticing list of fixtures for those teams. With a few late DGWs, the wildcard could really come in handy.
Last year I was able to take advantage of the late dgws by taking several hits in the weeks before.

I'm not accustomed to looking so far ahead.

The other argument in favour of the late wildcard is that your team total value sbould be high enough by that point that you should be able to bring in more heavy hitters than you can with an early WC.

      Thanks for pointing that out!

Nevermind. You meant Lukaku, Collins, Nastasic etc not being for sure starts? Aye. That's the one thing that's bugging me. Hoping for evidence they'll be starters pre-GW1 but hard to get much of that.

No Bale ? No Van Persie ? How do you expect to be taken seriously ? 😉

Great side. Shows how much you can do with money saved by not having those 2.Still, get a rotating keeper, downgrade Nastasic to a 4.5 or 5.0 is downgrade Mignolet and get a 4.5m 2nd keeper.

      Anelka to Cornelius/Graham/Gayle.

Not rating Anelka then? Not sure with his age and recent record in Chinese league, but thought he'd be worth a punt. I'll consider one of the last 2, not sold on Cornelius. Cheers.

If he finds firm I'd rate Anelka. Cornelius would be a punt, but young and ex-Copenhagen. So he'll be decent enough. I think Graham will do well though. Was decent at Swansea, might be best value of all forwards.

I fancied Graham when he went to Sunderland but they were hopeless at the time. Would be a bargain if he picked up Swansea form, definitely. Hull have decent home fixtures to begin with too.

I know most disagree but don't like sturridge at 9mill. 7.5 wud be fair IMO. Is so greedy will never get many assists either! Takes up a striker spot when coutinho is better pick IMO although also overpriced (shud be 8). Most of all can't handle his stupid goal celebration!

Yeah, I just want L'pool cover but I think Sturridge at 9m is slightly better value than Countinho at the same price. Unless I go for Gerrard, but then I don't know who to take out of midfield. Currently making a couple of changes to have Mirallas as a starter.
So unless I can save 1.5 elsewhere, and upgrade Mir->Gerr I think I'll stick with Sturridge and hope it pays off.

I'm assuming 110m by Christmas makes it a lot easier to fit in many big hitters and thus easier to climb the ranks..

    Just wondering. Cheers 🙂

Basically just wildcard on international week , catch all the price risers . Also never keep a player that drops , if you lose value fron that drop.

I always buy the most popular players as in the ones being transfered in and take out the ones that are being sold. it that simple , it does require a fair bit of work , prices must be monitored every day without fail , timing of transfers is crucial.

Hey guys! Could I get some help rating best attacking option from each of these teams:

West Brom: Currently on Anelka. No one else seems worth a shout (new transfers coming?)

Norwich: Snodgrass. Is VW interesting? Or not until we see how he and Hooper play?

Cardiff: Cornelius, but already have full strikes. Is he the only attacking option? Or is Kim acceptable for kicks?

Sunderland: Sess? Or is this new Italian the future?

Anelka hasn't done anything in years, why will it change now?

VW? who, you know what I mean Norwich don't score, he's not the saviour.

Meh, if you are stuck he could be a new Benteke.

I think Sess is a good punt, transfer talk though, make sure he's not unsettled.

Don't get stuck with looking at certain clubs, look at your side and go, yeah he fits etc.

But anyway W.Brom saty away from the forwards, Morrisson in mid might be ok.

Norwich, Pilkington for me nearly the same ppg and cheaper, no strikers they don't score.

Cardiff are shite, yes only Corn and he's a big punt.

Sunderland we don't know what Giach.... is going to be like so don't get him.

I'm playing an alternative league where I can only pull players from Arsenal, West Brom, Norwich, Sunderland, Southampton, and Cardiff.

Just trying to sort my front line. Obviously have Giroud, so was trying to figure out the other two strikers.

Tempted by Lambert and Cornelius, but Anelka seemed like the only West Brom coverage, and Norwich have great fixtures so I wanted to maximize a chance of getting some of the points

Don't write Cardiff off based on one person's opinion. Cornelius could be a bit of a star this season; quick, strong, good with the ball at his feet or in the air and Whitts & Kim will be able to pick him out.

I'd hold off of Norwich until they've had a couple more pre-season friendlys with Hooper and Wolf playing together, could be that they form a great partnership or could be they are a too similar type of player to work together.

If you can find a good rotation option to partner him, Altizore could be a steal for you

Why does nearly every RMT have Lukaku? With Torres and Ba (not to mention Schurrle, or Rooney), how can he be expected to play both games? The whole point of getting DGW players is for them to play twice in one game week. Lukaku, or any Chelsea striker, isn't it.

Sure, Lukaku is capable of a big game (or a bif half). But strikers don't seem to fare too well in the Chelsea system. Lukaku could also be capable of a yellow card and being subbed at the half.

Well if he scores in the first game, no reason for him not to play in the second. He had the best goal scoring record out of the three strikers at chelsea atm and Mourinho isnt a child, he clearly knows. Rooney isnt even confirmed, obviously if he were to go, Lukaku would be taking out.
