PlayON Player Picks – Gameweek 1

Having rolled out our Strategy Guide for the weekly Fantasy game over at www.playon.co.uk, yesterday, we now turn our attentions to the player list as we hunt for bargains ahead of the opening weekend.

Gameweek 1 Player Picks

While many Fantasy games have a double Gameweek 1 for Chelsea and Villa, PlayON have limited the Gameweek to just 10 fixtures – excluding Tuesday’s showdown at the Bridge. This affords us a more even playing field as we assess the potential on offer and, as we’ve discovered, PlayON have handed us some budget gems to consider ahead of tomorrow’s big kick-off. Here’s out pick of the bunch:

Goalkeeper – Ben Foster
The cheapest keeper on offer in this week’s game, Foster will set you back a mere 6.0 ahead of a home game against Southampton. While they tightened up at the back as the previous season unfolded, Mauricio Pochettino’s side scored just three times over their final five road trips – prompting plenty optimism for a Baggies clean sheet at the Hawthorns tomorrow afternoon. Alternatively, United’s David De Gea takes up just 6.8 of your budget and may appeal to those who reckon the champions will nullify the threat of Michu and Wilfried Bony at the Liberty tomorrow evening.

Defender – John Terry
Chelsea’s skipper prepares to welcome Hull to the Bridge in Jose Mourinho’s first match back in charge. While the likes of Branislav Ivanovic will set you back 10.4, Terry has been very kindly priced at just 7.4 by comparison and looks set to get the nod at the heart of defence against the Tigers on Sunday. Those looking for similarly priced alternatives may turn to United’s Phil Jones (7.5) – set to step in for the suspended Rafael at right-back, his foraging runs down the flank could come to fruition at the Liberty, while Norwich’s Michael Turner comes in at just 7.0 ahead of the home clash against Everton.

Midfielder – Steven Gerrard
The Liverpool captain is another one who looks like an intriguing option as Brendan Rodgers’ side get set to welcome Stoke to Anfield tomorrow lunchtime. Gerrard comes in at just 7.7 in this week’s pricing list – putting that into perspective, Philippe Coutinho is 10.4 while Norwich’s Robert Snodgrass is 11.7 – and with spot-kicks, set-piece and corners boosting his attacking appeal, Gerrard should also benefit from a scoring metric which rewards defensive work, with tackles and interceptions also key to our selections. Those looking for a budget punt may have an eye on 6.7 priced Jack Wilshere; with Mikel Arteta ruled out, he looks good to start against Villa, either alongside Aaron Ramsey in central midfield or in “the hole” behind Olivier Giroud.

Forward – Olivier Giroud
With just two places available for our frontlines, gambles are always ill-advised. The Frenchman still splits opinion across the Fantasy fraternity but he welcomes Villa to the Emirates tomorrow on the back of an eight-goal haul across the pre-season friendlies – more than any other player in the top-flight. At just 8.3, he looks a strong choice against a side that conceded in each of their last 22 Gameweeks in 2012/13.

How To Play

Once your starting XI is built (you can change your team as many times as you like up to two hours before the first kick-off) you can compete for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, you’ll have a chance of wining your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings.

Similarly, you can challenge another player to a one-on-one game, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Gareth Southgate and Opta Joe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged.

The Fantasy Football Scout Game – £500 Guaranteed Pot

Our £2 multiplayer game, dedicated to our community, is now open and PlayON are offering a guaranteed £500 pot for Gameweek 1 – the pot has already grown above this and currently sits at £636 and rising. Register an account and throw your hat in the ring for a share of the spoils.

Challenge Your Mates

You can also set up your own multiplayer games with your mates. While we have some Fantasy Football Scout games to enter, there’s an incentive to set up your own this week.

If you set up a £2 game and get 10 players and £20 in the pot, then PlayON will add an extra £5 in prize money to your game.

Create your own game at www.playon.co.uk.

Finally, a reminder that we published a strategy guide, offering some tips for getting the most from your PlayON lineup, right here.

PlayON is a form of gambling so you have to be aged over 18 and over to play and, if you do wager some cash, please remember to gamble responsibly.

Is it madness to double up on theo and caz ?

My thinking is arsenal still have no world class forward so these 2 will once again be the 2 main scorers goals and assists wise.

    worth a punt ?

People doubling up on Arsenal mostly doing Walcott/Giroud. Walcott/Santi might be worth it though.

    repost

This has probably been asked a thousand times, but...

    I need a mid for 4.5,
i was on morrison but he's not nailed on. I just want someone who is nailed on and is not a card magnet like Tiote and Lucas

What do you guys think of:

Pozuelo? Jedinak? Cabral? Colback? Or stick with Morrison? Someone else?

I'd stick with Morrison (I am) - he's not nailed on, but there are question marks over so many this opening weekend that he seems as good a gamble as most - he's had a good pre-season and has an 80% chance of starting in my view, which is fine.

    Hey Guys and Gals,

Just started writing a new blog - http://halsteadsoof.blogspot.co.uk/ - there will be loads of football related stuff on there, including fantasy football gameweek analysis and advice, predictions for the season ahead generally, opinions and topic debates on various goings on in the football world!

First post is about why Stoke will miss Tony Pulis and how they will definitely get relegated this year!

Feel free to have a look and post a comment if you have any opinions!

With comments like "definitely get relegated" as opposed to "might" or "probably", it makes me think you're too subjective before i've even looked at the site.

Good advice, I will keep that in mind... Although the website is based on my opinions of the facts I have in front of me. There are some teams I think "might" or "probably will" get relegated and there are some things I think are definite, this is one of them. Yes that is subjective, but thats the point of the blog!

        Hope you enjoy reading anyway!

Some people actually like to read about teams other than Man United and Chelsea. If you follow the PL why wouldn't you want to know about Stoke?

        Typical big club ignorance.

I'd rather read an article about Stoke than the same article about Rooney leaving 200 times.

The upcoming topics will be looking at other more controversial topics such as the award of extra points for better goal difference in a game, the new bonus point system and how it is limited in its award of points to defenders, how England's youth set-up can follow the likes of Germany, Spain and Belgium to succeed... but if its not your thing then I understand!

Ivan's not nailed on for 180, no. Cole seems to be the surest bet in defense to get 180 minutes, but I've gone for Ivan because of the attacking threat. I still remember his insane DGW last year, and I won't lose out on something like that again!

Cole more likely to play both, but i think both will be rested over the DGW.

Good to go. I'd go for Soldado over Giroud (don't rate Giroud at all personally), but I guess you have to save money somewhere.

I'm not a big fan of 4 DGWers myself, but there's no denying it could well pay off. Benteke is an absolute beast.

How nailed on is Brayford though? Might not matter that much because I assume you're going with a 3-4-3, but still.

Very strong side and likely to pick up quite a few points for clean sheets early doors just make sure you have a plan of sorts for GW 3 - you'll need a playable goalkeeper for starts as Cech is blank and Davis not Soton 1st choice

    Hot topic

    A) Mannone or not
    - I can't see reason why him move from sub at Arsenal to sub in smaller team.

    B) Navas or not
    - stat from OPTAJOE "71 - Jesus Navas created more chances from open play than any other player in La Liga in 2012/13. Cross."

    C) Toure or not
    - I can't see reason why him move from sub at Man City to sub in LIV. He want play football not watch at bench.

    D) best 5th cheep mid
    - I don't know who play ATK position in small team. Meyler? Thomas? or ....

      A) We don't know.
      B) Not enough goal threat for a 9.0 player
      C) Definitely Toure.
      D) Kim/Koren/Brady

      1) Not even if 1st choice Paulo is hot on rotation
      2) God no he didn't score a single goal
      3) Yes if you can accomodate him but there are other better placed similarly priced koscielny, coleman etc
      4) I've said this a lot if you have 4 dependable midfielders you aren't going to play him assuming you have 3 decent strikers so it probably doesn't actually matter but if its an issue of coming in GW 3 for a Chelsea then look at teams fixtures for GW 3 - Thomas and Pennant seem most attacking options

Lampard actually looks an excellent alternative to Lukaku now that I think more about it. Not sure which is riskier, picking Lamps or Lukaku.

    - Chelsea have an uncanny ability to pick up penalties too, so with Hazard already in my team, I'm covered on Penalty takers as well with Lamps.
    - On the other hand, Lukaku is nothing short of effective when he has the ball, proper beast too and plays much further forward.
    - IMO Lukaku is more a rotation risk than Lamps. But the fact that he's a forward tempts me just a tad more.

    Thoughts?

I am in exactly the same Dilemma as you.
There seems to be little between them, but I am leaning towards Lamps at the moment, mainly because he is more of a differential and it fits my team better not to have two DGW strikers (have Benteke also).
If Lamps gets the minutes he can be just as explosive, if not more than Benteke. Remember he got 15 goals in 1900 minutes last season, pretty impressive.

Mourinho's already said Lamps will see less gametime this season as he is getting on a little but he's a good punt for the double hes more than capable of hitting a hat-trick against both sides

The main issue against Lamps is fitness. Not played more than 45 in pre-seaon and only did that twice. But even with that Jose coming back seems to have given him a lift.
I've gone with Lukaku as it allows for better changes (Lambert, Dzeko etc) and more likely to come on as sub (Villa) and do something. Also there's not much else around Franks price to change too unless you don't have Mirallas.

To be honest, there's no way to know.

But it comes down to this for me: I doubt any of them will play 180 minutes, and I view Lukaku as a much bigger threat coming off the bench. I also view it as more likely that Lukaku will get a big haul.

      But still, it's almost 50/50.

And don't listen to me, my GW1 in the last two seasons have been absolutely awful 🙂

Moxey assist much? Thinking of getting instead of Mbiwa who i would/will be benching GW1. Mbiwa won't be fully nailed on + Moxey will be the only 4mill defender i will have....works out better in the long run once i downgrade Terry to a 5mill.
