The Community Round Up

Tottenham’s new recruits and the start of the Champions League group stages were among the hottest topics being discussed by the community over the international break. We also find out how FFS UEFA’s transfer window simulation game concluded and welcome aboard a new moderator to the Fantasy Football Scout team.

Hottest Topics

Tottenham have so many new arrivals following the close of the transfer window that it is hard to keep up with their likely starting XI. Luckily our resident video expert Brutus619 had his finger on the pause button to analyse attacking midfielder Erik Lamela’s displays and assess whether he is the real deal as a Fantasy prospect.

Robin Van Persie continues to divide the community, with one group of players set for glory, while the other bracing themselves for  disappointment. BigFatFrank has decided to give those wildcarders looking to shoehorn the Dutch striker into their team a step by step guide to creating the perfect RVP team. Meanwhile, 7 Shades of Smoke has ben debunking the popular “keep calm and captain RVP” mantra and wondering if it is nothing but a myth.

Elsewhere,Iain_90 ponders whether there’s any weight to the theory of “attacking coverage” across the most offensive teams or if it’s best just targeting certain individuals.

Bonus points and their sudden shine to defenders continues to dominate discussion. King Nemanja is so convinced that the recent glut of bonus points for defenders is no mere fluke that he is prepared to commit himself to a four at the back formation to ensure his team cashes in. For those wanting to follow his lead he’s come up with some great defensive line ups here.

The Champions League is almost here and in our discussion on the best options out there HeyDudes13 has some great budget options to consider  and Konig Luther’s lengthy list in this thread is also well worth looking at.

Worryingly for the community, international injuries have been mounting up this last week, with Liverpool right back Glen Johnson among those possibly destined for a lengthy stay in the physio room. Archie has been running the rule over the candidates who are likely to replace Johnson while he recovers.

Finally, Maxi’s top ten tips for mini-league success provided some useful, albeit sneaky and underhand, advice for winning a mini-league.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) game came to a finale during the international break with Norwich led by The Shadow being crowned TWS Champions. The rest of the top 5 was rounded off by PeppieandFelix‘s Fulham, Liverpool owned by 4vets, Arsenal guided by Zep and HVT‘s Aston Villa. FFS UEFA also tell us that places are still up for grabs in their FA Cup style game. If you are interested sign up here  by the deadline of 11:59pm BST, September 22. Those already involved in the FFS UEFA leagues and those who applied unsuccessfully to be a part of that competition have all been given an automatic space so do not need to apply.

A lot have been talking about wc because of a few problems ,
What a lot of guys are forgetting even if you do wc this week come Monday morning you could have 2/3 problems again - injuries/rotation/suspension etc ,
Your team will always be " Work in Progress " priorities/targets will change from week to week in Fpl that's why your the manager so do what a good manager should do :
Prioritise , organise and lead your team like a man !

      Here Here

It is common fact that some cannot simply sit with £100m burning a hole in their pockets. It must be spent. Hence the WC triggerrers on GW1!

Thats not to say it won't work out. Last years winner used it then! I won't use mine until the October Internationals are donw at the earliest

Depends though. I feel a bit too busy for FF this year.

Would rather WC now and get my team in a place I am happy with and deal with new issues as they arise than have to plan out a several week strategy for dealing with the numerous issues I already have AND adjust it for the new issues as they arise.

Also there is a very, very real argument that most people seem to overlook that (value aside) this game is all about momentum. Having a good team at the start and getting an early lead in your MLs makes it infinitely easier than chasing.

        In my experience at least.

The last time I saved my WC til towards the end it was a waste of time because I was happy with my team by that point anyway, last time I used it early it worked wonders....

All valid points , the way your saying it sounds like good planing perhaps since pre-season even ? - if that's the case thats good management of your team.
But what I'm getting at is those with 2/3 injuries / lack of defenders / players they think are essential / losing value to calm down a little .
1/2 fixes over say 3 weeks can get your team into decent shape with a little patience , I suppose I'm a believer in waiting for the dgw to try score a double digit score that in turn will rocket your score and repay those earlier hits ,
In no way shape or firm am I saying tho that this is the only way ,
But for me one thing is clear " man up and manage your team as you see best "

Momentum... On the money there. You'll never persuade someone who wants to hang onto their wild card for a rainy day, it's just a different perspective, but I'd always prefer to use it early and proactively.

I think last season I made the mistake of not using it early. The early bandwagons carried on with success through to the new year. I tried to chase and ended up with more and more differentials falling further and further away.

This year I think my team is nicely settled and have no need to wildcard. Most wildcard teams I look at aren't much different than mine or in my opinion worse and full of lots more risks.

last season my missus proved that you don't have to use a wildcard early. She had Ivanovic, Hazard, Michu, RVP, Bale etc from week 1 and just subbed others in and out whilst captaining Bale and RVP all season. I think it was week 35 we has the doubles and she wildcarded to make full use and drag her team from 10k to 3k in the world.

However, I really think it depends on the position you find yourself in. If you don't have the right players then wildcard. If you do then save it for late doublegameweeks.

Hazard doesn't make it into many RMTs at the moment, so you might have a good differential there. I'm not sold on HBA myself but he does have the fixtures.

I think no RvP for the next few weeks is a risk, but I don't need to tell you that.

      It's good.

Cheers Jonny! As a Chelses fan, I think Hazard is our most irreplaceable attacking player. I agree that HBA and even Hernandez are a bit knee-jerky but I'll take a punt. Would love RVP but I feel the team as a whole suffers from his inclusion.

Awesome front line and defence but obviously the midfield is going to suffer with this, and it does..
You could save some cash on Ivanovic -> Vidic, Collins -> 4.0 (as you have 3 'big hitters') or even Soldado -> Giroud.

Rate My Team favours him a lot. Guessing he'll be a Yaya type in scoring, but cheaper.

That midfield, wow. You have no flexibility there, I'd say you need at least 2 heavyhitters in the midfield in case somebody starts firing (Pamela, Michu, Hazard, Mata, Ozil, plenty of potential). Downgrade your defense or one of your strikers.

    GW4 wishlist!

    1. Rvp 2 goals or more
    2. Soldado 2 goals or more
    3. Mirallas goal
    4. Giroud stays quiet

    1 = captain
    2 + 4 = I don't have to do Soldado => Giroud next week (value issue otherwise)
3 = I can keep him and maybe he won't go down more than 0.1 before I can get rid, or maybe I don't want to get rid...if and most propably when he will blank, his price is going down at least 0.2 more before I can get rid.

I'm not greedy, 3 out of 4 is enough for me!

If I was offered a 50 point head start I'd definitely give up my wildcard. As discussed above, there are few things more valuable in FPL than having your rivals chase you, rather than the other way around.

I reckon about 20 points is a fair assessment, but of course if you play it well (in the manner that Jonty suggests) it can be worth a lot more.

Each situation is different. A team in crisis has a bigger worth for a WC to one which is solid.

Around 20 -50 if it ends up getting you some good captain options and a better bench.

I think the best value move a person can make is getting out a dud player for a new premium player that you captain and you manage to catch on a great run. That can add up to 50 pts within two or three weeks. Got to have a lot of luck for that to happen though.

    Early Bird Update

For those who have had a good start this season, this league is for you.

To qualify all you need is to have scored:

    67 in GW1
49 in GW2 with no hits or 54 with a hit. More hits equals higher score needed.
48 with no transfers in GW3 or 54 with a hit.

Code is 58-338 for those who pass these three points.
267 qualified. Plenty get knocked out each week.

Not much in it. I think with the tweaks in assist/BP rules and prices this season FPL Towers have given the 3-4-3 a bit of competition - it's no longer the stand-out formation and 4-3-3 becomes a viable option - maybe even 4-4-2 if/when the midfielders start to fire. So having a squad in which you can switch formation based on fixtures is probably the most viable strategy now.

Yeah, thats what i'm thinking. I really can't see lamps holding down a guarnteed spot, so Hernandez is a viable option. Walker provides some attacking cover from spurs too.

I'll try talking you out of 4 Expensive defenders
I think you're missing out on good value of the 4.5m defenders: Collins/Clyne/Shaow/Turner ect
They can a offer great a great rotation that can be as strong as your 4th Expensive.

Doing this also enables you to switch between 3-4-3 and 4-3-3 picking the players you fancy to get the most points. eg Brady VS Clyne/Turner.

          Mignolet (Given)
Evra - Mertesacker - Chester (Wisdom - Collins)
Walcott - Lamela - Brady (Hernandez - Dikgacoi)
          RvP - Benteke - Giroud

Off to a festival tomorrow morning so would like to decide before I go. Got slight worries about 3G access too, it's in Portmeirion, so my questions are:
          1) Am I right to go Benteke over Sturridge?
          2) If I'm benching Hernandez, is that a sign I should get someone better?
          3) Should I risk leaving my transfers until Saturday morning in case of an extra price rise or two?

Nah I'll live with it for now. Just a headache deciding who to get, plus their fixtures are middling at best, and I don't see them thrashing too many teams under Mou. 2-0s, 1-0s, 0-0s. Will look to get a defender at some point i reckon.

As I said Benteke to me looks a season keeper.

I think you might be right, but do have a nagging feeling about Soldado. Might just be that my main ML rival has him.

It's one to consider - and if covering your rival is important, it's an option.

HVT's advice is sound - Benteke is a great pick - but I just fancy Soldado for a few weeks and then you can downgrade to Benteke afterwards. He might be a bit more expensive then but if Soldado fires his price will go up too, so it may not end up costing anything.

Morning peeps. Hope al are well

My WC choice is boiled down to the following 'dilema'

          A.) Eriksen / Fellaini / Lukaku (from GW5) / Mr Van Persie

          vs.

          B.) Lamela / Moses / Sturridge / Giroud

RMT has the two repsective teams a natts huff apart, too close to call

(Rest of the team is vanilla:

          Mig / 4 /
          Kos / Rio / Walker / Yanga / Chester
          Lamps / Ozil / JWP
          Benteke )

Does anyone have a nugget of wisdom of is this gonna end in some kind of one-man fantasy football soggy biscuit competition on Saturday morning ????

Welbeck got a good rest this week, while RVP played.

          RVP out; Welbeck in?

          For a hit?

Chamck is fresh and on better form than RVP.

He is a must. Bring him in this week for a hit if you must!!

One thing I haven't seen mention on the RVP debate - squad flexibility.

I am not on a WC, but tried to put together a WC team based on bringing him in. I liked what I put together, but with so many cheap choices, it would be very difficult to make further changes based on transferred wanted down the line, and reacting to players coming into form etc

You therefore have a very inflexible squad imo.

Or you've instantly got access to at least 4m in funds any time you decide to downgrade him, so have fantastic flexibility 😉

That's the way I see it. Can make decent changes with just a four point hit, whereas to get him in to start with can be trickier.

This is true - but you have to compromise if you want RVP. But having him is not the be-all and end-all. Further down the line (after his good fixtures) he can be sold to a 9-9.5 FWD and then you'll find you have a very flexible squad.
