Scout Scribbles – Van Persie Skips Dutch Training with Toe Complaint

Robin Van Persie sits out Holland training with a toe problem. Luke Shaw and Ashley Williams withdraw from international duty, Brendan Rodgers talks up Jose Enrique’s recent displays, while Samuel Eto’o admits he’s yet to adjust to the Premier League.

Van Persie Toe Concern for Dutch

Reports yesterday indicate that Robin Van Persie missed Holland’s latest training session due to an injury to his little toe.

The Scout Says: The omission is likely to be no more than precautionary and could well be linked to the problem that had been reported prior to United’s trip to Sunderland. Certainly, if the issue was serious there’s every chance that Van Persie would have withdrawn from the squad or failed to feature against the Black Cats – given that Holland have already qualified for next year’s tournament in Brazil, there’s no need for the Dutch to take any unnecessary risks with their star striker ahead of Friday’s home clash with Hungary. Nevertheless, Fantasy managers will be hoping for a more positive prognosis ahead of a run of three home games in four for United, with the hope that Van Persie can rediscover his scoring form whilst on international duty after a poor domestic run has seen him manage just a single converted spot-kick in the past six Gameweeks.

Eto’o Needs Time to Adjust

Chelsea’s Samuel Eto’o has admitted he has yet to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League since moving from Russian outfit Anzhi in the summer transfer window. Speaking to the club’s official magazine, the Cameroon international conceded:

“Already I have noticed that English football is very physical – more physical than other types of football. It hasn’t been too much time yet, so I need to continue working to make sure I keep improving my level. Every game here is important and I realise that – I have come here to enjoy playing for Chelsea and to enjoy the football. I go into every game with the same approach. It doesn’t matter where you put me, I will play football. My team-mates are helping me a lot and also the coaches, so I feel that I am settling into the team.”

The Scout Says: Yet to score for the Blues, Eto’o’s lack of impact has been somewhat surprising. Handed back-to-back starts in Gameweeks 4 and 5, he managed just an assist and has been afforded just 18 minutes since, with Jose Mourinho preferring Demba Ba’s more physical presence for Sunday’s trip to Cardiff. With Fernando Torres still sidelined due to a knee injury, Eto’o could make a return to the XI for the upcoming home clash with Cardiff – a good performance against the Bluebirds and he could be handed the chance to continue as Mourinho’s side prepare for games against Newcastle and West Brom in the next four. The Chelsea manager’s rotation policy suggests he would admittedly be no more than a punt, however, with Oscar still the only attacking option to justify our interest so far, having struck three of Chelsea’s nine goals in the opening seven Gameweeks.

Shaw Skips England Under 21 Duties

Southampton’s left-back has withdrawn from the England Under 21 squad to face San Marino on Thursday. Shaw has failed to recover from the illness that forced him out of Sunday’s win over Swansea but is hopeful of recovering in time to face Lithuania next Tuesday.
The Scout Says: Shaw’s weekend absence was the latest in a series of issues that have affected his game time this term. The Saints left-back has managed just three lots of 90 minutes in the opening seven Gameweeks, with his propensity for picking up problems proving a real source of frustration for Fantasy managers. With just two goals conceded thus far, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been the most resilient defence on offer but while Artur Boruc leads the keeper rankings and Jose Fonte and Dejan Lovren sit on 46 points apiece, Shaw has registered just 32 points by comparison. Indeed, with both centre-back now priced at 5.2, many may turn to Nathaniel Clyne instead – coming in at 4.4 to Shaw’s 4.7, he has now started each of the last four after winning back his starting berth and looks nailed-on at right-back.

Williams out of Wales Qualifiers

Swansea’s Ashley Williams is also amongst the international withdrawals after being forced to skip Wales’ upcoming games against Macedonia and Belgium. The centre-half had previously stated his intentions to appear but has since been ruled out after being examined by medical staff:

The Scout Says: The news will appease Swans boss Michael Laudrup, who has been without his skipper for the past two Gameweeks due to an ankle injury. Laudrup had called upon Chris Coleman to overlook Williams when naming the squad and has insisted for a number of weeks the player requires rest in order to recuperate – with another 10 days until their next league game against Sunderland, Laudrup will be a little more optimistic of welcoming Williams back to the fold as the Welsh club prepare for a very kind run of fixtures. With doubts still hovering over Williams (who is now down to 4.9 in FPL) and Ben Davies also out of international duties as a result of a hamstring problem, those eyeing up the Swansea defence for the next five Gameweeks (SUN, WHM car, STO, ful) could turn to Chico as a safer option if neither of the former two make it in time for the Black Cats encounter.

Lambert Hails Villa Versatility

Villa boss Paul Lambert reckons his players’ versatility has been vital over the past few matches. Lambert has trialled a number of formations in order to cope with injuries to key players including Christian Benteke, Gabby Agbonlahor and Ashley Westwood, with a 3-5-2 rolled out in the Gameweek 6 win over City:

“The beauty of it is they can adapt. The lads know it (3-5-2). They played it last year, so they know how to do it. The good thing is we can change to different ways of playing. They can adapt to whatever we ask them to do. It all depends on who we’re playing against and what players are fit, but we try to get a team to win. I played three at the back against Manchester City. Even though it was the first time this season, I thought they did exceptionally well.”

The Scout Says: Lambert had shifted from his default 4-3-3 to 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 in recent games in order to cope with a growing injury list but with Agbonlahor and Westwood available for last week’s trip to Hull, it was perhaps telling that he reverted to 4-3-3 once again. The likes of Leandro Bacuna and Antonio Luna had been utilised as wing-backs in the win over Manuel Pellegrini’s side but the duo were moved back into defence for the Tigers trip, as Lambert relied on Agbonlahor and Andreas Weimann to supply the width further up the pitch. In spite of the success against City, then, it seems likely that Lambert will only return to such a system if injuries force his hand again – thus instantly quashing Luna’s out of position prospects on the left of midfield.

Enrique Praised By Rodgers

Just a day after Aly Cissokho capped his comeback from injury with a 90-minute run out for Liverpool’s Under 21s, Brendan Rodgers has been talking up Jose Enrique’s recent displays. The Reds boss also went on to reveal the Spaniard has been nursing a slight injury over the last few matches:

“Jose has been playing with a little bit of an injury, but he’s still been showing his determination and pride for the team. He has all the attributes to be one of the best left-backs in the Premier League. He’s a threat when he goes forward and defensively he’s very difficult to beat. The great thing is that Jose is always working at his game. He appraises himself honestly when we have chats. He’s one who is looking to improve his game and his passing. There’s no doubt that on his day he’s one of the best in that position in this country.”

The Scout Says: With little alternative on the left of defence, Enrique has played more than 100 minutes more than any of his defensive team-mates in spite of his minor injury. Indeed, Liverpool’s only defeat arrived in Gameweek 5 when Rodgers omitted Enrique from the XI and opted for Mamadou Sakho on the left of a back-four in the 1-0 home defeat by Southampton. The result prompted a change in formation to 3-4-1-2 and saw Enrique re-installed to the starting line-up on the left of midfield and, whilst Cissokho now offers an option should Rodgers choose to rest the Spaniard, Rodgers’ praise will offer reassurance to Enrique’s owners ahead of the resumption of the domestic programme in 10 days’ time.

In need of advice on what to do with my 2 FT, 0.1 in the bank.

    Team:

    Mignolet
    NEW (A)

Coleman Ward Walker / Clyne Turner
    HUL (H) FUL (H) AVL (A) MUN (A) CHE (A)

Özil Eriksen Michu Arnautovic / Morrison
    NOR (H) AVL (A) SUN (H) WBA (H) MCI (H)

    Suárez Rooney Lukaku
    NEW (A) SOU (H) HUL (H)

I was thinking of upgrading Coleman to Terry, having Walker and Terry at the back with rotating Clyne, Ward and Turner looks good to me. But as I have only 0.1 ITB I would need to downgrade somewhere. Rooney is a prime target I think, or Ozil - Walcott.

    Any suggestions much much appreciated:)

Ward -> BTurner and save one FT. Boring, yes, but the rest of your team looks great. Gotta give Arnie a GW or two now that he's playing striker, nothing pops out in that price bracket except maybe Barkley.

Got 2 FTs this week, looking to possible ship out Davies/Dawson/Wilson and Eriksen to bring in Oscar and downgrade 0.5 on one of those defenders. My other defenders are Baines and Clyne, any suggestions? 🙂

Depends on Davies' injury. He's a great prospect if he regains fitness, Swansea's next 5 are all amazing for CS potential. If he's out for more than one GW, I'd ship him for Chico. If not... I'd like to keep all of those players mentioned. Do you have anything else that needs fixing for 1FT, then save the other?

Basically if I switch Eriksen --> Oscar i am -0.5 in the bank, so I need to downgrade someone else in my team. Check my team link if you feel like helping me out 🙂 Bit worried about Wilson and Dawson being dropped or getting rotated as Wilson has been in bad form and Spurs have plenty of centre backs

Yeah. It's tough. Looking at your team I don't see any big improvements you can make really. If you pick one of Wilson/Dawson to ditch, you could end up with the one you ditched keep his spot and the other one getting dropped. You'd think Wilson would be chopped before Dawson...

Best way to deal, -wait-. There's a fairly good chance that the international break will give you the answer on what to spend an FT or two on in terms of injuries happening.

Can I get a lunchtime vote please:
I have Boruc in goal and Baines, Mertesacker, Chester, BTurner

    Who to bring in alongside:
A: Terry - probably a season keeper allowing FT's to be used in mid and strikers
B: Enrique - as above, but rumours not nailed on
C: GJ - when back and at 5.8 could be a bargain
D: Walker/Dawson/Vertonghen - think it's pot luck which of these 3 racks up more points
E: A Swans defender - but Davies is injured

    Eriksen > Walcott or Ozil

Which is the best??? leaning more toward Walcott who i think will get on the end of what Ozil produces, plus the cheaper price and he's more of a differential in my ML.

Of course Ozil tends to assist any goals Arsenal score though.....

Advice please! I'm a casual playing with work friends. I'm 8th of about 150 atm so I want to keep up there!
We're using sky sports rules/player costs.

      Mignolet
      Lovren, Rose, Davies, Rat
      Hazard, Mata, Mirallas, Leiva
      RVP, Aguero

I can make 3 transfers this week and have 0.9mil in the bank. Additionally I can only have 2 players from any one team. I would like to get suarez, ozil and ramsey in for hazard, mata and leiva.. however I'm just short of enough cash to do that. Would Sturridge or Lukaku be a better option than Suarez? Should I go for someone cheaper instead of Ramsey?

Let's see, Belgium plays the 11th and 15th, Everton plays the 19th. That's three full days of rest between fixtures, usually enough. I agree I'd be a little worried if he does play 180, but I can't see it happening since Belgium have all but wrapped up the group victory and Lukaku is not used to play 90 mins. They can afford to give fringe players some minutes.

I've discussed this before... but it's always a good one to open again. Money on the bench.

I wildcarded two weeks ago and brought in Barkley and Ravel. Both have scored while on my bench. Faye has also had two clean sheets while on the bench.

Yes, they are great backups when my higher value players miss a game, I get that.

How about I put my weight behind the lower value players and get at least one non playing mid and non playing defender?

What do you do and why? What has worked best for you in the past?

Nothing makes me happier in a fpl GW than when a nailed on player in my team and my ML does not start(eg Wally 2 weeks ago) and i have a Brady coming on with 12 points and the rest of my ML has a 1 pointer/zero points comin off theirs

It makes so much sense to have playing subs. Brady came in for me two weeks running with 11 and 12 points thanks to Walcott. As others in my league pointed out I got a bit lucky but I'm the one who transferred him in for a hit a couple of weeks before. As well as wanting cover you want to increase squad value so having players who are desirable on your bench means that they can make you money too.
You should want the players on your bench to score highly, it's better than the alternative. It can be frustrating missing out on points but really, what sort of idiot plays Reid away against Tottenham when they have 3 players like Terry, Zabaleta, Baines, Walker and Fonte in their defense?

I seem to be doing ok as I was reading and watching many FPL games on sat sun morning as nbc here is showing every game. Great coverage and it seems to be getting many Americans into soccer

I wanted to share my team and get some feedback. I used wildcard and built some equity up in bank as well. I never played before but I always did well with NFL fantasy so it seemed easy once I learned the rules

Thinking of dumping Murner with my FT. £5m to spend.

    A. WIlliams (if fit) / Chico (if not)
    B. Distin
    C. Go crazy and take a hit for Murner + Rooney > Baines + Lukaku!

    Currently thinking A. Team below...

    Migs (Rudd)
    Zaba - Kos - Clyne - (Murner - Brayford)
Michu - Hazard - Eriksen - Barkley (Brady)
    Rooney - Giroud - Sturridge

As a Barkley owner I would like to start him a little more regularly rather than simply watch him accumulate points on my bench. I'm on the lookout for another budget mid that could rotate with him for favourable fixtures (not necessarily a home/away rotation).

Who are the best candidates (Brady, Januzaj, Morrison, Whittingham?), and are other Barkley owners considering a similar strategy?

Yeah it would require you to bench both on occasion. The rotation isn't great and sometimes they both have good fixtures (presumably Barkley would start in such circumstances)

In the next 10 GW's the only game I would start Morrison over Barkley would be in GW10 against Villa when Barkley has Spurs. 1/10 starts for Morrison isn't a great rotation unfortunately.

I'm going to replace HBA with one of two options. I'd appreciate a view on which to go for....

    Lampard
    Paulinho

I know people are selling Lampard but he strikes me as a cheap way into Chelsea and he tends to deliver when on the pitch. However Paulinho is class and I'd like some Spurs attacking assets.

I have Coleman already but thinking of upgrade to Baines as I think he will score more consistently. Also got Evra and Enrique and thinking of getting Terry too, to have four premium defenders and break away from my usual play 3 defenders at the most template. Considering how there are lots of great mid and budget midfielders available this season, rotating between these, depending on fixtures, might be a decent and not too wasteful strategy.

Am i mad to be considering this?

    Mirallas > Michu (-4)

Hull at home seems like a really bad time to take him out...

PS - Having had 8 injuries in the last 3 weeks, I don't really want to take any more hits!

    Berahino on any radars?

If he's good enough to be linked with Chelsea surely he's good enough to nail down a spot and be worth a punt at 4.5?

Looks a great young player, may be worth 3rd striker spot.

Think he'll do well this season

        Agreed.

Lot of decent strike options but can see him being the best sub-7m striker for the rest of the season if he nails down a spot. Frees up one hell of a lot of budget.

Striker spots are too valuable I think. That's where you need your big guns and the old reliables

no way. 3 forward slots not enough for benchwarmers like that

Thsi could end up being a big couple of weeks in Fantasy Footie land, what with the international fixtures and possible injuries to players I wager a number of you are keeping fingers crossed that Sturridge (who can be a bit injury prone but not yet this season) keeps healthy withEngland but waht with Welbeck seeming in prime position to play up with Rooney you may be safe.. But mores so with the returning of early season favorite picks in Walcott and Bentake, will the Giroud/Ramsey axis still pick up points? how long will Southamptons defence retain a surprising watertightness? Has RVP been cloned or is it his cousin Ali Dia that has replaced him.

Yeah I have 2FT's and looking to hold till after the internationals are done and dusted. If anything an injury will make it easier to work out who to sell and who to get in.

    If yes, which one?
